I was updating the electrical components of my WR250R and decided to add heated grips while the bike was apart. I chose the Heat Demons from Symtec ($55):

Tip for anyone trying to fit new grips back on bars: heat up a pot of boiling water and stick your grips in for about 2 min and that will loosen them up. Spray hair spray or grip glue on the bars and they will slide right on and once they cool down they will tighten right up.. Did this multiple occasions and worked everytime

that's a good tip Rocco, especially if you don't have access to compressed air like we did. That trick worked very well. Another idea would be to use a heat gun/hair dryer, but your's seems simple. I did not use grip glue with the stock grips. They are on there so tight there has been no movement at all. Thanks for your tip!

I had those heaters on my 1100 Shadow for over 10 years and they lasted. They worked so well. Normally when it was cold, I'd turn them on high for a few minutes, the switch them to low before they get too hot. You cannot run them on high constantly. They get too hot on high. On low, they are perfect. One thing you'll notice it the throttle side gets hotter than the left side because the heater is on the throttle housing. On the left, the clutch side is on the handlebars, which dissipates some of the heat. So if you put a few layers of tape on the bars first, they will heat evenly.

I'm going to install a pair of these and wanted to share a tip I saw on Thumpertalk. One of the guys said it makes a substantial difference if you use insulating tape as opposed to heat shrink tubing on the clutch side. I'm going to get some HVAC aluminum foil tape at home depot. If any of you notice less heat on that side then you may want to give that a try.

Thanks Matt...that definitely sounds worth a try. I don't really notice the difference too much on the left side. Grips still work well, all these years later.

"2 Set Universal Motorcycle Heated Handlebar Grip Heater Wrap Hand Warmer" is the title of the ad on Ebay 10/04/20... exact same title as the ones I ordered and got in a few days, but now the price is up to $14.xx USD and it now says "china," so, I am guessing shipping will take longer. They seem to be stellar quality, considering they are from china. Nice switch, solid, not too flimsy components. It was $12 for 4 pads that look like the ones in this video, kind of flat metal impregnated in plastic or however you want to describe it. Comes with some install stuff you can see in the ebay ad.

Thanks for letting people know. I used a cheaper set years ago on another bike and they didn't last that long. I would still recommend paying extra for the Symtec warmers. They are still on my WR and work great. Never had an issue.

@@AdventuresWithMe00 not bad to cover a few days of cold, or try out the idea of warmers, they do work well, but I have nothing to compare it to. yeah, 99% of the time it's better to go full $$, but if someone's on a non existant budget, these are holding up for the last week and use on 2 days, still seem far better built than typical (and I order a lot of crap from Aliexpress/ebay china).

great review. now I've finally found a grip heater that let's me use grips of my choice
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 6 жыл бұрын
The option of using the grips of your choice was a big draw for me too Oso. I had used another brand that had the heating elements integrated into the grip, which made for oversized grips. I have small hands so I was never comfortable with them. The other factor is that I'd used cheap under grip heaters in the past but they didn't last long. The Heat Demons seem to have a really good reputation and I think they will last a long time. I've only had one season on mine but they still work great and are used a lot! Thanks for the comment!

On 22 mm/7/8 inch handlebars, just buy 1 inch grips to go over these types of handgrip heaters.. Make sure you buy motorcycle handgrips and not ATV handgrips because, Motorcycle specific handgrips have a larger diameter grip to go over the throttle tube. With ATV grips,Both grips are the same diameter, one of them is not larger to fit over the throttle to because they have a thumb throttle on ATVs, not a twist grip throttle

Great video, thanks. Too bad Heat Demon no longer supplies the bracket. $17.50 for a small piece of metal is a scam. I'll be looking at another brand that supplies the bracket.
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a lot for a small piece. I will say the integration works really well and the grips still work perfectly after all these years. But I can see how the gouging will rub potential customers the wrong way.

How hot do these get when compared to the grips that have the heat elements inside? I totally overlooked that with these i get to keep the grips i have. Awesome video!
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 6 жыл бұрын
I had a set with the elements integrated into the grips as well. I've found the heat to be equal in both. On the high setting you really can't hold your hand on the grips too long. I had used a cheap set of element heaters similar in design to the Heat Demons years ago but these are so much better. No comparison. I think the Heat Demons are definitely the way to go because you keep your stock grip. I didn't like the oversized grips at all.

I used stock grips. I had to buy a second one because when I installed them originally I used glue and there just wasn't enough clearance. Don't use glue; use compressed air to expand the grip and the stock grips will fit perfectly.

Do you have a detailed installation instruction on the wiring?
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, no, I don't have any detailed instructions. It's not really that difficult. The given instructions are easy to follow and the grip elements are prewired, so you just need to connect them to the switch and the switch to the battery. I went on Symtec's website, but couldn't find any directions listed there.
