My parents are doctors and I hate when people think that nurses are less than doctors. Everyone needs to know that nurses are so so amazing and are very hard working. Nurses are so so close to their patients which is crucial. Nurses are amazing!

Leena A. Can i ask you a question ? I want to become a doctor but the thing that keeps me off guard is the fact that people day that doctors have no free time and that the only thing they do is working ALL the time. I too want to start a family but idk if you can being a doctor ? May be you know bc your parents are doctors

taehyung sure! You’re right, a doctor definitely has way less free time but that doesn’t mean you can’t start a family! It’s definitely possible you just have to be smart about your timing. I have to warn you, being a doctor takes years of studying so if you want to have a child before 26-28 it may not be the best choice. After that though, you can definitely take a maternity leave, book your schedule based on your children, etc. Pre schools and extended day programs at school are what my parents did to make sure we were supervised when we were younger. You could also get a nanny. There are many options so don’t stress! You can definitely be a doctor and have a family you just need to plan things out effectively. Hope this helped (ps good luck!!) 💘💘

i chose to wanting to be a Nurse instead of a doctor because i want to live and start my life earlier. some people may say it sounds crazy but i’m being 100%! doctors need 12 years of school and nurses need 4 and years of training. the second reason is because i feel like nurses are closer to their patients than doctors and i love it💓 i would love to be a NICU nurse...

Here in Nigeria, some people even ask you "so, you will become a doctor after your degree?" And you have to start explaining how nursing is different from medicine. How they are two parallel lines. How our job descriptions are different. Then after you get over that, they ask you "so,why not go for medicine instead of nursing?" And thats where you start rolling your eyes and re-explain the whole process. Then they pray for you and say "God will promote you to be a doctor very soon" I just die

As a medical student, I completely agree with and respect your decision! I prioritize my career first before a family because I want to create an environment that is financially stable for my kids, as well as develop my career and practice to the point where I'm not working all hours of the day. We need nurses just as much as we need doctors, so thank you for caring for other human beings. It's an honorable role in and of itself.

Hi! I’m almost done with my bachelor’s in psychology and I’ve really been starting to consider nursing as a career, and applying to an accelerated BSN program. I’ve been watching your videos and it’s been confirming a lot of my thoughts and feelings. Especially when you brought up the fact that your priority is going to be having a family so the strict shift schedule is important, that is exactly how I’ve been looking at my life. I just wanted to say thank you for all you’re doing, as a nurse and as a KZfaqr!

Girl. We go through a lot of science classes (bio, chem, A&P, microbiology...) in college too. It’s literally a degree in science. It’s just not at the same capacity as doctors or people pursuing med school, obviously because we aren’t preparing to practice medicine. We learn the foundational science plus all the psychosocial “caring” stuff nurses are known and praised for. Many people think nurses are “just” nurses and that we “aren’t smart enough” to become doctors & that is not it. Personally there’s no way in hell I’d be cool with the doctor lifestyle of taking home my work, like you said. Work is work, it’s not my life 🤷🏼‍♀️

@mariangely9546
@mariangely9546 6 жыл бұрын
Cute Panda yes many doctors work from home remotely, being on call, taking calls from nurses and other hospital personnel. I’m sure they are able to check up on their patients from home. Some less than others. But hospitalists and internists stay busy, I’m sure, because they oversee so many patients and they’re ultimately the decision makers, they’re responsible for putting in orders. As a nurse I only take care of these patients for the duration of my shift. Once I’m home the patient is no longer my responsibility.

Great video! In high school I decided that I wanted to become a doctor. I shadowed a pathologist and was sure that was what I wanted to do. Then I go off to college as a Biology major. It turns out that I loved some aspects of biology and hated the other. I hated chemistry and could not grasp the major concepts which I knew would have doomed me in Organic Chemistry which is a course all Med Schools require. I started shadowing and volunteering at a hospital in my college town and I slowly realized that I loved what nurses do. So here I am now waiting for my 2nd year of college to start as a pre nursing major. Hopefully I get in to nursing school. Keep up the great content!

Yessss!!! When I first started college I wanted to become a doctor but after sitting down and realizing how little they really interact with their patients and that’s one of the things I look forward to most about being a nurse. Having a family is also very important to me which is a lot more difficult to do while being a doctor. Another thing is that there are so many different routes that nurses can go and they can change their specialties whenever, doctors can’t.

Yeah. I’m a honors premed biomedical student and everything is narrowed down to what you are matched. Whereas the human cadavers, you have to be comfortable with it. However, the downside is being on call and knowing what orders/tests go into a patient. You can literally be on “vacation” and have to be back in a hospital settings when they need you. Doctors aren’t very one to one with patients, rather than being there for symptoms and discharge, but they put in the orders and deal more with paper work. Another downside is the number of math courses you have to take. It’s overwhelming because you have to balance out school, your personal life (e.i. kids, family, friends, bills), volunteer services (community, organizations, clinical), and school to get a “good enough” resume for medical school interviews. Not to mention is the massive student loan debt that accumulated interest.

Anthony Marquez My dad used to be a Surgeon and my mom was a Nurse. My dad was always working, he rarely had any time to relax, he was extremely depressed about life. He was so depressed he got his own apartment to be alone from me and my mom. He was never happy because at work he would work, then at home he would review all his patient files and prepare for next days surgeries and consults and EVERYTHING. Having a second hand experience from both sides of the coin, I can honestly tell you man, I never want to be a doctor. So for me it's very simple, I just don't ever want to be a doctor, I've seen what it did to my father & that's not the life I want. Honestly bro, we chose the best profession we could have chosen. Hold your head up high and say PROUDLY "I am a Male nurse. Ask me why I became a nurse, I will tell you why bahahaha" 🤘😁🤘

My mother is a retired Nurse (worked for 43 years!). She practiced such a wide range of specialties (e.g. NICU, Geriatrics, Hospice, etc.)! I work with groups of OUTSTANDING Nurses and NPs. I think people are more so annoyed when people ask why did you become a nurse over a doctor in a way that makes it seem like being a nurse is inferior to being a doctor. Or when then ask it in a way that seems like you're just "settling" for nursing. Like some people will say "oh you're so smart, why don't you be a doctor instead?" It makes it seem as if nurses can't be smart.

Here's a comment I put. Hope it can help: Just to speak for the "doctors don't interact with their patients a ton" remark, my mom (a GP) and a good friend (plastic surgeon) are doctors and they interact with their patients a lot. Even outside of my clinic, my mom does a lot of community events and provides homework help and workshops/events for the kids. My surgeon friend gets a lot of gifts from her patients, too. My mom also never takes work home. I haven't seen her do that in over a year, and even then she chooses to bring it home so she has less work tomorrow. I know there're lots of doctors who don't interact so much, but as someone in med school, I wanted to push that idea. For example, Natalie Crawford, MD is an infertility physician, mom and is soo involved in her patients lives. Dr. Rupa Wong, an ophthalmologist in Honolulu-the same. She owns her own practice, too and spends a good amount of time with her kids. The psychosocial aspect, I loved that you spoke about that. It's so true in many ways, though I feel I know doctors who implement that as well and if they don't, they feel they've failed as doctors. I love nurses, have nurse friends and seriously give my heart to the ones who helped me when I was in Canada

I always try to remind myself that I can choose the kind of MD I want to be. Meaning I can be right their at bedside if I like, I can be as interactive or as distant as I choose based upon care given. I like that aspect of it. ❤️

I wish my grandpa would see that being a doctor is not for me. And it’s normal for people to WANT to be a doctor. He always says your smarter enough to be a doctor, as if being a nurse is for dumb people. Plus he always goes, but doctors make so much more money. I’m not going in healthcare for the money! Ugh lol PREACH

Hi!! I really love your nursing videos and they are so helpful for me since I'm a pre-nursing student. I LOVE AND RELATE to this video LOL. I have two older uncles that are doctors and I constantly get compared to them and looked down on because I want to be a nurse. I concur about loving the nursing model more than the medical model. Nursing is such an amazing profession and I like that patient care and interaction, and really want to get to know my patients and getting to see how much you can impact a patient is so rewarding based on what ive seen volunteering in the ER. I know youre probably not going to read this but you motivate me to become a nurse with every video. Im applying to UNF and UCF nursing in a few months for Fall 2019, so figures crossed! You go Alexis, continue to be a kick-ass ER nurse!

My sister is in medical school but I want to pursue nursing. It has nothing to do with me thinking I’m not “smart” enough yes her & I have different strengths but I just want my life to get started and also I want to spend time with patients (hopefully kids) & mentor them & care & be a support bc I feel like that’s really important. Thankfully my parents are super supportive of the both of us! (I’m still in high school) my brother is a pastor! So we all went/are going different paths but I’m so thankful for my parents bc they understand & they love us for who we are & what we want to be!

I also wanted to become a paediatrician when I was younger but at age 11/12 I knew it wasn't for me because I knew it would be too much work and too many years in school. I went for nursing instead because I still wanted to care for sick people. For the summer I'm taking biochemistry which is somewhat like organic chemistry and I'm SO glad I didn't decide to become a doctor. That information is another language lol.

Thanks for the video! It was true that going the Medical route took longer but I really think that is changing for the Nursing Profession. Now to become an Advanced Practice Nurse it requires a BSN, RN (4years of school), at least one-year of bedside training in that given specialty, and a DNP or Ph.d. (3-4 years of school) with board certification exams to practice. The average total is from 8-10 years of schooling and training or just as long as the Medical route! I think this is better for the Nursing Profession because it is requiring a higher level of educational attainment. You will be great!!!!

I'm torn between being a nurse or a doctor..When I was a fourteen I'm certain I wanted to be a pediatrician. I've planned my goals and possible pathways so I did a lot of research and preparation for this dream but then as time goes by and here comes realizations in life. Well let's just say perspective changes and then now I'm an in coming senior high student. I don't see myself taking other courses besides STEM though I got other dream jobs in mind I don't see them as options in the mean time for some reason. I honestly wanted to do a lot of things in my 20s and in my opinion I think I can hardly do a lot of things if I choose medicine. I respect all the doctors out there for me I see them as heroes and nurses too hehe God bless you guys especially these days. I usually don't comment too long but hey this matters to me so much and yeah. Thank you for this vid:) I think I know where am going.

Girl, I cringe at that question. I feel like it makes my profession sound like less than. I'm like its a completely different thing and I don't want to be a doctor. I feel like nurses contribute more to the quality of life for patients and like we're the ones who help will patients back to health. We each of our place, so those who want to be doctors go on ahead. I'mma stay right here with my nursing.

I have also been asked the same question myself. I just happen to prefer the field of Nursing to being a doctor because I am not interest in all of the responsibilities associated with being a doctor. Plus it takes too long to be a doctor like you said. So much of your reasoning also resonates with my thought process on why I chose the career choice of Nursing.

People say it takes too long to get through medical school, but if you think about the different sections of nursing school that you'll need to complete prior to becoming a NP it is nearly even. For example, 2 years pre-nursing, 4 years BSN, most programs require 1-2 years working experience before NP school, then 3-5 years NP school depending on MSN or DNP. SO...essentially around 10-12 years after all is said and done!
