I’ve used Oceania since college to describe that continent & region of the world. But I was definitely taught in Midwest middle & high schools that Australia was its own continent & New Zealand kinda just tagged along.

It's not a book but l would definitely recommend, My Octopus Teacher, it's a documentary made by Craig Foster, a free diver who builds a relationship with a female Octopus in a cold water kelp forest of the coast off south Africa, filming her for over a year until her eventual natural death. Truly moving piece of work.....I was taught Australia, but then l am old school....🙂

Growing up in Kenya we used to snorkel out and sometimes over the barrier reef. Stonefish we knew all about - having seen what happened to people who stepped on them. Stingray, Lion fish, Surgeon fish (lovely scalpels either side of the tail) and so many other fun things for kids to play with. Ah... it was fun growing up in the 60's/70's.

Fun continent fact, Zealandia has been discovered as the 8th continent (though it's been updated to be described as the largest micro continent), with the majority of it now submerged. This explains the wholesale differences between the biomes and animal life of Australia and New Zealand.

The reason we think dolphins are cute and friendly is because of the stories that are passed on by survivors. Thing is, the bad encounters had no survivors, so no stories to pass on. Never thought about it that way, until Anita shared her thoughts on it.

Here in Poland I was taught that the continent is called Australia & Oceania. The Australia part is obvious and Oceania is used to describe everthing "around" Australia. Btw. great video, as always! Love your reactions.

What impresses me about that guy is how many humorous phrases he can come up with for something being killed.

Since you don't know much about Marine life, my recommendation is to check out The Peacock Mantis Shrimp, not only is it my favourite animal on the planet it also has the best abilities too, I think ZeFrank has a video on it. Casual Geographic is great, love his content. Might i recommend TierZoo also, he creates tier lists based on different groups of fauna on the planet whilst describing them using a lot of gaming terminology. His videos tend to not be too long but also very informative. I'd also put ZeFrank in the same vein of informative and entertaining media. I was taught that Australia is the country, Australasia is the local group of landmasses (Australia, New Zealand, pretty sure there's a couple more islands) and Oceania is the Continental Plate consisting of Australia, New Zealand and the Islands above. Though i could be wrong, never quote me on anything i say. All i can find in regards to Dork (with the exception of it's dictionary definition) is that it's American Slang from the 1960's meaning penis, probably a less offensive derivative of the shortening of Richard. Another example would be frick being exchanged for fu*k.

Whats interesting is the tourist are warned don't mess with the sharks, stingrays, rock fish or other stuff and they still would go ahead and do it. They need to suscribe to this guys channel.

Something to look up regarding cetaceans is that one way we know that they were (relatively speaking on evolutionary terms) recently land animals is that they still have a pelvis/hip bones. Something no other aquatic creature has, since they've never needed the extra support.

Wisconsin education taught me Australia. I read about Oceania later on. I remember a folk tale I was told when I was a boy. It was about a magic mill on a ship that would make salt, but it got stuck and kept making salt and the weight sunk the ship and the mill sank to the bottom the the ocean making salt still to this day, and that's why the ocean is salty.

In my country, Denmark, we are generally taught that Oceania is a region and Australia is a continent.

So a little trivia on that angel shark clip. It was a spiny dogfish shark that it tried to eat. The dogfish has spines on its dorsal fin. So when the angel swallowed the dogfish it stung the angel inside its mouth. The angel then spits out the dogfish and swims away.

I’ve always called it Oceania growing up in the U.K. I was speaking to an American friend and they referred to it as Australia. I thought they were hi but google taught me people say that too.

I think I learned the continent as Australia in school (I don't remember hearing Oceania), BUT I was also a fan of maps when I was a kid (I put together puzzles of the 50 states when I was 5 and learned the countries/capitals of South America through a computer game/program when I was 7) and knew of Oceania through other sources. It might have been in that game where I learned it, but I'm not sure.

In school, we learned it as Australia. I found out about Oceania after coming across an old map of the world.

I always called it the Australian Continent, but did you know there is currently a debate going on as to whether New Zealand is actually part of another seperate Continent (mostly currently submerged) called Zealandia

Ocienia is what I learned to be used when talking about the content the Aussie's and New Zelander's are on. I bealive, at one point, it was now as submerged (new Zeland) and was actually a much higher and larger land mass {wait, I think New Zeland is actually a content on its on....maybe}

Marine animal fact: the leopard seal has multi purpose back teeth which can both cut through flesh like carnassials and sieve plankton from the water like certain whales do. they also sometimes hunt penguins on land, penguins are so slow moving on land that the giant leopard seals can pursue them in a hilariously lumbering chase scene and when they catch them they will often grab them by the feet and smash them into the floor repeatedly to finish them off, like some kind of huge spotty, flippered psychopath!

There are pluses and minuses to living in the UK. One plus is that our waters are relatively safe to swim in, but the minus side is that the water is bloody freezing. However, I always feel like my whole body has been detoxified after going in the ocean.
