When I saw the scene of Ariel on the rock, the camera direction and color made her look bad, it looked like a beast stalking its dinner.

i think ursula being triton's sister isn't supposed to be a big thing, more like a fun fan service thing cause that was an extremely popular theory back in the day.

I was just happy that they picked an actual singer instead of what they did with live action beauty and the beast.

One thing that bugged me was how slow everyone and everything looked while moving in the water. The shark attack at the beginning felt so slow and subdued, like they were swimming in molasses instead of water, a medium they're used to moving through. Especially when compared with the original where the action is quick and snappy. It carries the momentum from scene to scene

Honestly, Disney making these movies isn't experimental anymore. It makes me miss movies like Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland because at least that movie was unique and felt like it had its own direction. These new movies are just shot-for-shot remakes but forget the best parts of the original and the intricacies of the production.

finally, a fair review of this movie that doesn’t devolve into conservative soapboxing, ever since it came out i’ve been looking for a straightforward review that tells me what’s actually in the movie bc i’m curious but don’t wanna feed dollars to The Mouse. you weighed the strengths & weaknesses of the movie really well & equally critiqued it AND gave it credit where credit is due. but maybe you givin an actually nuanced take on the movie is why the algorythm hasn’t put this on more ppl’s feeds 😅

I disagree about part of your world as when it comes to Ariel Ariel has a soft easy going feeling when it comes to Jodi. Halles is to strong in my opinion, Ariel is supposed to soft singer with a lot of general curiousity, plus i just dont like what Halle has been saying. To me when she speaks about anything that has to do with her new Ariel, she tries to say "Oh my Ariel wont just leave the ocean for a boy." Like BOY DID YOU NOT WATCH the orginal movie, Ariel didnt just "Leave the Ocean for a boy either."

I agree 100%... we can all agree Halle's voice is out of this world but I think her version was way too over sang. It takes away from it, for me. The way Jodi sang it, resonated with me so much more, like you can really feel her pain and longing where as Halle is just higher notes. I think the way Howard Ashman directed her to sing it, was literally genius.

@@MARS0l Ariel is a soft voice, very sweet and full of pain. She is caught between a rock and hard place it shows when Jodi sings. It shows the pain the feels with a soft child like wonder and innocence. If shows that with each and everything she has she always wants more she wants to be apart of a world she thought she never could be. It showcases a series of wanting, loving, and passion. It shows that Ariel is desperate to see all of these things for herself. But it also shows that she's scared to. She wants to have the best of both worlds, she wants to be human, but also doesn't wanna lose her family in the process. Because one thing I LOVE about the original is the fact that when she show cases her love she show cases so beautifully for her whole family. She doesn't want to hurt her dad, but she also wants to just live and be human. It show cases Ariels personality in so many ways.

Hallie sings it like the broadway show, which is fine when you are in an audience setting trying to project your voice but the song is meant to portray sadness and make her be small ending with a pleading feeling at the climax. The directors and hallie missed the mark with this song

@@charg1nmalaz0r51 I am very aware of that, it's not sad when Halle sings it, it's not soft spoken. I also just believes it has to do with her voice, because I'll be honest and this is just me. A black woman's voice just cannot compare to the sound of a white woman's soft spoken singing. I don't know what it is about it but a black woman's voice has always BEEN way stronger. They just show case that energy when it comes to it, I have always envied it though, I always WISHED that I could sing and convey the strength and pure absolute raw emotion the sound of blacks woman's voice and vocals they can. But sadly I cannot, I guess that was the other thing that just doesn't fit with me black women's voice are just SO much stronger sounding than white people's voices even when they try to sing soft, so to me her voice just doesn't fit the mark for this movie the emotions she's trying to portray.

I’m in the same boat as you man in some ways. Halle Bailey was fantastic! The musical numbers were very well done. The under water sequences were great. However, for me the romance wasn’t very good. I just didn’t feel the chemistry. That really sunk it for me. Great review 👍

I haven't watched it yet,but I've always hated live action,I've watched a live action movie in the 90's when I was a kid and all I can remember is,it was the worst experience,it's no wonder I'm more of a cartoon lover,I could go into why I hate live action, but all you have to do is look up the live action of mario bros from 1993 and you'd understand, the animated movie we just got for mario is way better, live action just never does anything right, animated movies definitely do better

I think the casting choice for Ariel in the live action remake was amazing actually. She already looks like a fish, so they didn’t have to use CG on her.

Halle is an amazing singer but I could really tell this is her first big role in a movie, because of the type of character ariel is I expected a performance similar to gisselle from enchanted so I was kinda dissapointed at times, of course it would be more cartoonish but I actually dont see the problem with that, the little mermaid allows for that type of performance. I also felt she had very few facial expressions outside the songs, like the scene where she is saying godbye to king triton, she didnt seem sad enough, just blank faced😓. I know she has more movies commimg out this year so she probably improved since TLM, cause that movie was pitched when she was only 18 :)

DAMN DISNEY who could've thought that the movie that everyone thought was a bad idea was bad? What coulda happened. But it just sucks that this is getting bad reviews simply cuz of the actor, likes it's 2023 people shouldn't be up in arms about a black actor in a movie, if anything we should be happy

What are your comment on the "new and improved" ending where Ariel defeats Ursula instead of Prince Eric (to make up for the criticism of Ariel being a weak and helpless damsel in distress in the original because she had to be saved in the end)?

7:20 "URSULA'S CRAZY SISTER!" Listening to the new versions of the songs, I really like Bailey's covers of the songs. Especially the reprise of "Part of Your World" I found myself listening to it several times! But it's sad to see that such a strong performance is otherwise surrounded by one of the more cynical 'franchises' in Hollywood these days, if you can consider the Disney Live Action Remakes a franchise of their own.

I dont know, i still think Ariels casting wasnt that good and not because of the whole race thing, i just dont think Halle is a good actress and mostly got the role because shes a good singer. She has decent moments and has better chemistry with Eric but thats about it. Most of her trying to convey the youthful energy of Ariel was just doing the Cat Valentine thing of expressing like a toddler more than having that natural charisma. Plus her singing is good, like its technically good, but her rendition Part of Your World actually hurts me. She does the dumb unnecessary National Anthem run, the character acting in her songs are stilted and unatural, and the mixing wasnt that great. Granted some of that is due to the writers, director, and audio engineers but the woman should be able to sound dejected in a song about longing for a dream she may never achieve without sounding like she got punched in the gut lol. Also, off topic, that song she sung when she got on land when she cant talk is bad, im sorry. It's narratively confusing and clashes with the rest of the soundtrack
