Should you film videos vertically or horizontally? In spite of short form 9x16 videos taking over the internet, here is why I think that videographers and filmmakers shouldn’t shoot vertical videos.

In this video, I talk about my rationale for filming all of my content for Instagram Reels, KZfaq Shorts, and TikTok horizontally in a 16x9 aspect ratio. Specifically, I discuss under what conditions you should film horizontally and when you should film vertically, some of the most prevalent issues with filming vertical video, and why for myself it makes sense to film almost solely horizontally and resize my footage to a vertical format as needed. Hopefully this video helps you understand the pros and cons of filming vertically so that you can make the best decisions for your specific style of videography.

I had the same thoughts at first, but after shooting over 1000 social media videos i can tell u that it's a big difference shooting horizontal and than cropping in. First the amount of time to crop in properly and reframimg it well is incredibly high and i can tell u, that when ur shooting vertical the way u shoot is completely different, when u see exactly the outcome of the video u are going to frame it completely different. When u do it horizintly u have to go back so much more and i'm losing depth of field and its giong to be a lot harder to see everything detail in the shot from such a distance. A pro has to feel the shot, that's why he is shooting it vertically

100% with you! I hair some projects last year purely vertical and could use them in my show reel :( so now everything is shot 4K min in 16:9 🤘 I also noticed the distortion when using the DJI mini 3 pro so even with that tool I still shoot horizontally!

Totally agree, but this isn't really about the gear, as a lot of people argue, it's about the logic of using the most appropriate format for the scene your are filming. If you are filming a person full length and they are not moving across the frame (i.e. talking head) then yes vertical 'may' be okay, but of you are filming an expansive scene, i.e. a landscape or people who are moving across the frame then horizontal is the format to use. Using vertical video is so restrictive and feels like you just want to see off to the side at what's going on off frame but you can't because it's filmed with such a tight frame. All because someone can't just take two seconds to turn the phone 90 degrees.

My thought if you are shooting for one video for various social media platforms is as follows: If you have an iPhone and are wanting to shoot a short for YT, a short for TikTok and Instagram and Facebook shorts. If your intended FB short was to be extended over the one minute mark and decided to release it as a FB video post, then crop from 16:9 to its preferred 4:5. For an intended long form video, to me the ideal is to shoot 4:3 on a Blackmagic camera and then crop for 16:9 for YT and 4:5 for FB.

We agree! For some shots it makes sense to shoot vertical, like talking head that is made for 9x16 - it blurs the background more due to the fact that you can get close, but you loose all the benefits you stated!

I agree to an extent. Although shooting wider also means deeper depth of field. Would also be nice to have open gate 6k 60fps on a camera (my xh2s has 6.2k 30fps). I find personally 16:9 too narrow most of the time.

Some great points in here. I film a lot of handball and have to supply both horizontal (for FB and TW) and vertical (IG) clips of game action, player portraits etc. Only thing I’m still struggling with sometimes is wanting these beautiful close up shots which tend to be worthless in vertical video because it’s too zoomed in. They’re great for the horizontal videos, but unusable for the reel format.
@petersarellas

Yeah I agree it can be tough to get those really tight shots when you have to consider both formats. Sometimes you gotta just get the best shot and realize that not everything can fit vertical I guess 🤷‍♂️

As much as I hate to admit it I have found that I consume a lot more KZfaq shorts lately, and while its better to see the video in vertical format for that specific reason rather than someone trying to fit a 16:9 or 21:9 video into a 9:16 frame, I find more often than not people who are putting these videos out are NOT keeping the "action" in frame. They are more interesting in seeing what is happening and not filming it correctly. Shooting horizontally as a habit will allow people to edit the video later to make sure the point of their video stays in frame. If they MUST hold their phone vertically to record why not just record in 1:1. However, personally I always record in horizontal because as you said it gives me the flexibility to use the video for more future projects and since the majority of content is streamed in 16:9 and 21:9 on youtube and other platforms, it just makes sense to be in that format. Honestly I kind of want vertical video to go away. It's really annoying watching a news clip and the citizen journalist or internet clip they are using is vertical wondering all over the place, and barely shows whats happening.

I think what you explain for your case of action videography are all good points. But I recently started filming a lot of vertical social media videos in a studio environment with a carefully designed framing. Shooting horizontally would give me no benefits here. I do have to say though, camera gear isn‘t made for vertical yet…Things get blocked, buttons are suddenly in a weird position. UI doesn‘t rotate …. it feels wrong ergonimically
@petersarellas
@petersarellas Жыл бұрын
Ergonomics are a challenge regardless of content for sure. As I said in the video, if you can ensure that your framing won’t cause distortion in your image or anything to be cut off and you’ll never have to repurpose for 16x9 at any time then shooting vertical isn’t bad.

These are some great points! I've been debating on this for a long time, and tbh I still don't really know which one I prefer. I think it depends on what I'm shooting for. I do shoot a lot of vertical for my weekly, less serious content, but prefer horizontal for that cinematic short-film format. I just wonder if people really watch KZfaq videos like before? Because personally if I see a horizontal video on my iPhone, I skip it fast.

As I understand your point this isn't the case for everybody. Just your opinion. My experience is opposite to yours. When shooting for vertical delivery I only shoot vertically. This allows me to retain quality, gives me real bokeh, I can frame the subject the way I want it without the need to "fix" in post and especially during live event shooting saves time in post. Cutting out from a horizontal image will always lose quality. I can Imagine your workflow is for small time creators, hobbyist that need that file for a showreel later or total beginners. When it comes to distortion it's your job as a DP how each glass distorts and how to set up the shot. All in all I would some up your advice as an advice from someone who's experiencing Dunning-Kruger effect.

So, shooting vertical puts the softest parts of the lens at the top and bottom of your video. It’s more intelligent to crop the center of the horizontal frame and eliminate those weak areas. And DP’s don’t shoot vertical videos. 😂

I love shooting horizontal because it's easier for me to control the camera as a beginner. I noticed my panning is a bit more unsteady when I attempted to shoot vertical footage...which I hated because I couldn't go back in time. For some reason the in camera stabilization didn't seem to function as well vertically on my Lumix GX85. Could just be me though 😅. Even though I have my grid turned on when shooting, it's still a bit hard as a beginner to keep the action in the center grids when I'm filming football and basketball. If you happen to get things a little to the left or right, is there a way to salvage the footage in post or is it a lost cause. I'm still trying my best though ❤️ Thanks for all the helpful guidance in your vids. This keeps me going.

Here's my point: shooting in horizontal has ton of advantages overall, the only case vertical shoot make sense is when we're sure we don't move the camera that much and is facing a static subject. Unless we talk of Drone shootage. In that specific case I gotta admit vertical shoot is a game changer. In fact, if we wanna shoot a subject entirely in horizontal (to upload in 9:16 social media) we have to go up at least 50m more and sometimes there's fly limitation on areas.

I feel like people that say this just don't have a good enough or practical enough vertical cage setup, so instead they have to justify shooting horizontal for something that is going straight to instagram. We all want to look super professional for the client, with the mattbox and monitor setup and it looks silly when you have to turn your camera vertical. The only way I can really believe any of these justifications is if I see that you can actually rig up your camera for vertical shooting without looking silly. Than I know its your choice to shoot horizontal.

Both methods have their place. I shoot cinematic stories and yt shorts where I make use of the auto loop. Shooting horizontally creates completely different compositions where I'm having a hard time deciding what to frame in post. I always compose for what the sensor shows me. So naturally I get drawn to an image that will look good horizontally. Shooting vertically eliminates that problem by limiting me to this very format. In post I work with images that I have already nailed how I want them to look --> carefree editing. This would not work if I'd run and gun. Therefore shooting horizontally works better, because movement happens from left to right more often, like you described. Like I said, both methods have their place. You need to decide where to use which tool.

It's all solved by shooting in 4x3 or full sensor "open gate" on my Lumix. Shoot landscape and yet have a very tall frame so you can easily get portrait /vertical edits out of the footage. No problem. There's no need for this either /or discussion. I bought my camera specifically for these capabilities. Thank you.

I shot a bunch of footage for a client using a GoPro Hero 11, which has a 7:8 sensor, using full-frame. This gives options for several aspect ratios in post. Also shot some tracking shots straight down with a drone, tracking horizontally, which could easily be turned vertical in post. I prefer horizontal for most projects, and fully agree that vertical is a fad and dedicated vertical video won't age well.

Wow, you did a great job of explaining your use case and why it's better to shoot horizontally. I am struggling with this as a new content creator myself. I personally enjoy watching movies in the theater and on my wide screen TV, and just tolerate vertical content on my phone. I was watching a show with my wife last night and it was full cinema style, wide as heck with anamorphic flares. My goal is to someday get to the point where I can create a cinematic movie or documentary, not something goofy that gets a bunch of likes and is ephemeral.

Are you using warp stabllizer or stabilizing to a point using stabilize motion in after effects? You may be seeing blurs from motion blur caused by camera movement that isn’t being eliminated when you stabilize. If this is the case then using a faster shutter speed and whipping the camera less will help.

The only reason I would think about shooting in horizontal would be to be able to use it later (and the ability to pan left to right). Shooting horizontally and cropping in 4k or not u always losing quality and getting noise introduced when cropping to 1080 and not to mention when you want to do slo motion shots, u will find that not everyone owns a camera that does 4k 120 so imagine shooting 1080 to get slo motion the amount of noise ul be getting not to mention shooting slo mo already requires alot of lighting to remove the grain it makes it much worse when you have to now crop in. Going wider means losing more detail when you crop in.

@@teraho-tran3566 you are technically upscaling your image to fit the frame if you shoot HD and stretch to fill vertical so it’s valid but also if you shoot really good looking footage (i.e. properly exposed, well lit, possibly 10-bit colour, etc) then you can scale up to fill from vertical and it still looks good.
