Speaking Japanese is amazing fun. But not when you have to speak it all day without being allowed to switch to your native tongue. On Day 14 of Journey across Japan, we give it a shot.

@@alucardjp1 Depends on what you mean. You can be perfectly fluent in one language with a foreign accent. Your understanding of the language is not determined by how you speak it. But if you want to sound like a native of that language then having a regional/national accent related to that language or, at least the right intonation, is preferred.

@@Good_Hot_Chocolate while that is true as far as mastering a language I still think if you don’t intentionally change your voice intonation or whatever you wanna call it I would not concider it good or still good but not really good

Especially for languages where the way you say a word be that pitch accent or the simple fact that so many words in Japanese for example relays on you saying the word in a specific way in order to make sense. This is true for Swedish to. The exact same word depending on how it’s pronounced means totally different things so even tho you migth be fluent you will make no sense if your accent is not taken into concideration I am aware accent is probably not the best way to describe this :)

Hey guys, so sorry for the delay on this one! I was starting to think a higher power didn't want this video to come out. First there was the extra time it took to do subtitles, then this past week I've been battling something in between a cold and the flu (it was always going to happen sooner or later on this cycle). AND THEN finally yesterday the computer failed to render the video for an unknown reason and I nearly threw the laptop out the window. But it's done! I'm back on my feet, the video is up and I'm looking forward to getting back to regular uploads. Honestly guys, I still pinch myself to think that as of today, we've now had 20 videos released on the Abroad in Japan channel since just September! To put it bluntly, that's absolutely mental. As always thanks for watching and if you enjoyed the video, please hit the like button. I never harass you to do it (as I hate it when creators constantly harass viewers), but after a somewhat crap week, it might just help put a smile back on my filthy, unshaven face. Now enjoy scrutinizing my Japanese!

I'm from South Jersey, and watching these leaves me with a budding inspiration to do something similar. Maybe I'm just romanced by the idea, but to experience, absorb, and appreciate an entirely different culture as intimately as Chris is currently, I can only imagine the amount of personal growth to be... motivating. As someone who feels stuck in at point in life that feels unfulfilling to say the very least, this series has been near therapeutic for me.

Cold German Beer Chill the fuck out, Tank Dempsey. The Japanese don't do it because it's "suppressed", they don't do it because it's fucking sick. They don't do MILITARISM like that anymore. Only a fool would blame the present generations as if they were the same as their ancestors. Never forget Pearl Harbor, definitely not, but I'm 9999% certain you don't forget for the sake of the victims in the attack, NOT to dwell on who did it. First, you talk about how you think foreigners look stupid when speaking Japanese (when they don't. Also, your white man doing black dance moves? Doesn't look ridiculous, it's cool. That's like saying an Asian who can beatbox looks stupid, or a black person who can sing Justin Bieber songs look ridiculous... anyhow, the Japanese just loooove to support foreigners who speak Japanese because they're always impressed and appreciate the work they've done to learn their language), to the topic of war. Nice.

Ive heard from multiple sources that japanese is a pretty worthless language to learn. All japanese are required to take 6 years of english in schools so pretty much everyone speaks it, at least a little. Several have said that if you start to speak japanese to someone, and then they will respond back in english because its so rare they get a chance to practice with a native. As far as I can tell its not really necessary to learn unless you are actually going to live in japan.

The way Chris feels about speaking Japanese is the way I feel about speaking Spanish now... which is kinda sad because it's my native language. But I've been abroad so long (19 years), I hardly use it outside of speaking with my family, so English is my primary language now. I did half my teens and on learning and speaking English. My sense of humor as a young man and now an adult in my 30s developed in English. It sucks, because I literally feel like I can't express myself properly in Spanish anymore... my sardonic attitude is there, but because of the cultural and linguistic differences in the languages, and due to my ever diminishing vocabulary, in Spanish I just come across as bitter and mean-spirited, really. So I have to tone it down. I feel like I'm not being myself, entirely. It's a really odd feeling.
@TortaGuy12
@TortaGuy12 4 жыл бұрын
ChileanIggy I have a bit of a similar experience, but with my situation being different. My parents immigrated to the USA before having me, so I mostly speak english as a result and only speak spanish with family. Its so difficult to express myself in spanish since I only have a limited knowledge in the language (I barely remember things like conjugations etc) and as a result, I just sound serious, and I come across as awkward and monotone. Meanwhile, I’m way different when speaking english with my friends since I know the language perfectly and am more expressive.

Language changes and so does time and expectation. Have you lost what you had, or has the viewpoint of what you are and how you view yourself shifted as well? I think both are probably true. Countries and communities experience change and even though language is necessary to practice as an art rather than a hobby, it's the world shifting around art and hobby that change the perspective of the recipient I think.

I absolutely get your point of not being able to translate exactly what you want to say in japanese. I have been living in France for more that five years now (married to a French man, so I speak it all the time), with German being my native language. Two languages that are not that "far away" from each other, but still...often it is impossible to be understood the way I want to be. There are linguists who have studied that phenomenon, Barbara Cassin published a "Dictionary of untranslatables", words from different languages you can't really explain in any other language. Often, these words are closely linked with the culture, the history or the "way of living" in a country, but some are really surprising because they seem so "normal". So no matter how perfectly you speak a second language, you won't be able to always say exactly what you want!

I just caught up on all the episodes of the podcast. Burned through them quickly since I can use headphones at work. Loving the podcast and the cycle across Japan series. Thanks for all the entertainment.
