Why I got an "Abortion"

This is the story of how I found out I had 1, then 2 fast-growing lumps in my uterus-- and why getting them removed would be considered an "abortion" even though I was never pregnant. My experience just scrapes the tip of the iceberg of this very nuanced issue; so many more people have it worse, and I am very very lucky to in a place where I'm able to get a D&C. Our current lawmakers are barring people from accessing the healthcare they need, risking lives over things they don't care to understand, and it makes me sick.

Going to an abortion clinic in the conservative state I live in is disgusting. I wasnt even going for an abortion, I was there to support a friend who was lightheaded and needed someone to drive her. I got screamed at for being a murderer and a sl** and a wh***. But the worst thing I saw was a teenager who had clearly been crying alot getting harrassed. They called her an idiot, a wh***, a sl**, a b****. For making a mistake. Nobody yells at the boys. It takes two to tango. But no, it's only the women.

That's so awful. I cannot IMAGINE harassing a teenager at an abortion clinic. Obviously something has gone really wrong for her to be there. Isn't that enough?? Firstly, as Illy pointed out, many people go to "abortion clinics" for reasons other than abortion. Secondly, I'm pretty sure that it's a VERY TINY MINORITY of people who get an abortion flippantly. There are SO many people who feel forced into it, due to dangers to their own health or the health of the fetus, or knowing perfectly well that they are unable to care for the baby if they gave birth. And people who are like "just put it up for adoption!!" INFURIATE me. It's so fucking ignorant. Healthcare in the US is extremely expensive, including childbirth - lots of people can't afford the medical bills even if they aren't keeping the baby. Pregnancy is also EXTREMELY hard on the mother's body, sometimes with lifelong consequences, which again means medical bills that they might not be able to afford. And more than anything, the foster care system in the US is absolute trash, there are so many thousands of children who can't find homes (I keep hearing stories about foster kids having to sleep in offices and in CARS because the system is so overwhelmed and there's nowhere else to go). Many more foster kids are tremendously abused - statistically way more often than other children - and statistically adult foster children are much more likely to end up homeless or in prison. It's fucking awful. Why would you think that's somehow better for the child OR the parents?? I feel like so many pro-life people believe that people get abortions and "end a life" on a whim, and it's simply not true... for the vast, vast majority of cases, abortion is an absolutely crushing decision, one that the person lives with for the rest of their life, but they feel they have no choice. In some cases, they really do have no choice. And some people will be like "then just don't have sex!!!!!" Like abstinence-only education EVER works... we're human. Everyone makes mistakes. We shouldn't have to suffer lifelong consequences for making a mistake. Especially young people. And it's especially awful to inflict lifelong suffering on the potential child because their parent(s) made a mistake. I just don't understand.

It does make me pay more attention to the language of the law. "Abortion" doesn't seem to mean in legal terms what it means in spoken language terms. But I find it unproductive to tell someone who is against abortion that its just removing a clump of cells and saying a normal healthy fetus is also just a clump of cells. The way Pro-choice people debate feeds into Pro-life ignorance and then further conflates that ignorance as malice. Which is willful ignorance. Most Pro-life people only care if abortion kills a developing human and if informed would vote for better laws with clearer language.

It's also worth knowing that the majority of abortions aren't that big a deal either. Nine times out of ten you take a pill that gives you a period and that's all that's necessary. It's never been some big graphic thing, it's generally just a quick trip to a doctor.

The people you have to convince are far right wing politicians; they already know, they have advisors that have told them. They don't care though, because they aren't ignorant, they're simply evil; they are objectively bad people that are throwing women under the bus for profit, simple as that. I suppose that shouldn't be too difficult to do. Abortion = killing the baby. If removal results in death, it would be an abortion. If removal only results in the removal of an already dead baby, then it would not be abortion. Seems like the sort of thing that can be fixed fairly quickly. A lawsuit or two will likely fix it in due time. Law is often stupid, but stupid for "good" reasons. This law is stupid for no reason.

My sister had an abortion. The baby had no brain, the medulla was just flapping in fluid inside it's head. There was the tiniest, slimmest of chances that the baby would survive if born, but it would have been a vegetable hooked up to machines, would have been unable to grow, or do anything. Not to mention, the birthing process would have been incredibly difficult on my sister's body, due to the position the baby had grown in. There was a high chance she could have permanent damage, or even die, just to birth a baby that had a 99.99% chance of being still-born. So, she had an abortion. What kills me is that, because of the state I'm in, if she had been born just 25 years later, and had lived the same life, and had gotten the exact same pregnancy...she would have been denied that procedure. Just because of the state she lived in. Something a lot of "pro-life" people don't seem to understand is that this can be a lifesaving procedure, in so, so many ways. So, what they do, is they take away that choice, because of their own ignorance and refusal to even think about the possible consequences of their actions. I genuinely hope things turn around, and start getting better.

Im part of two groups. One of them is called Muslims Against Planned Parenthood, and the other is called Immigrants Against Planned Parenthood. What we do is that during the month of Ramadan, where we cant eat or drink anything, we stand outside of our local one (located in a city where over 65 percent of the population are immigrants or Muslims, so plenty of supporters), but their is one difference from the other protests. We are silent the whole time, we stand their quietly, for 8 hours, without uttering a single word. There have been multiple times where nurses have come out and told us to "go back to Taliban", times where patients would see us, and call us terrorists and bombers. One protester, a guy who escaped the Darfur genocide in Sudan, was seen by a 28 year old patient. She walked right up to him and punched him. She is in jail for assault. Police have ruled on our favor multiple times because we werent yelling anything, not screaming in peoples ears, just standing silently with signs. We have only done this for three years, but two in the St.Paul area have moved because of us, just because of some immigrants fasting holding signs outside. Its crazy.

This needs to be repeated until it finally sinks in. An "abortion" can include a miscarriage, it can include an embryo that has implanted outside of the uterus, it can include a fetus that has died and still remains in the womb, and it can include growths such as this one. Anyone who tells you "That's not an abortion" is either lying to you, or doesn't know the medical terminology they are talking about. To those who think that the fact that the growth in this case turned out to be cancerous and not an embryo means it wasn't an abortion, remember that the doctor couldn't really tell that until it was removed and biopsied. It wasn't likely to be the case, since the author was very careful about using birth control, but it ot was still possible that it was a pregnancy gone wrong. The doctors would also have to provide proof that the tissue removed was not a fetus if the state chose to prosecute - which recent events suggest that they would. This is entirely due to lawmakers using the blanket term "abortion" which is a medical term, and not widely understood by non-doctors. If the lawmakers wanted to clarify the meaning of "abortion", calling it an "elective abortion" perhaps, or "termination of a viable pregnancy' that would be a stsrt. But I speculate that pro-embryo activists don't want to use that language, because they don't WANT a mother to be able to terminate a non-viable pregnancy, or an ectopic pregnancy or one that threatens the mother's life. They WANT her to die. That wasn't pity she was seeing in those protesters. It was fanatics wanting to stone her for being a sinner.

For those saying that an abortion is not the same as what she described, simply look up D&C like Illy pointed out. "A D&C (Dilation and Curettage) is the most common method of early abortion." Even if you look past that, this video highlights the danger and negativity directed at not only women getting abortions, but also people like Illy who went through things like this. The people who protest, shun, shame, gaslight, or even attack those who so much as visit a planned parenthood are a danger for intervening in a person's private health.

The problem is that even before the overturning of roe v wade there weren’t a lot of OBGYN doctors, let alone facilities. It is a pretty niche path to go, and doesn’t pay that much. You have to be a special type of person to become and OBGYN after dedicating nearly a decade of school and then rotations, just to choose something that doesn’t maximize the money you make. There is a reason why a lot of pediatricians are older, because not a lot of young doctors want to be paid so little (relatively) after that huge investment.

Wow... I'm glad you're ok. I'm confident Ohio still would have given you the care you needed though. What you had should count as a high-risk pregnancy in which case Ohio allows abortion in those cases even with Ohio's heartbeat bill in effect. You should have gotten the care you needed regardless, but the trouble seems to be I've heard stories of doctors delaying treatment because they didn't fully understand the legal specifics of Roe v Wade being overturned. Hopefully doctors not understanding the law is very rare now that it's been over a year since Roe v Wade was overturned. Considering Texas and Alabama also allow abortion in cases where the mother is at serious risk like with ectopic tubal pregnancies, I think we can all agree that the proper handling of a miscarriage, particularly in your case, is essential healthcare and that it's fair in legal terms to have the option to get an abortion if the doctor confirms a pregnancy is high risk (though it's also a heroic act to carry a high risk pregnancy to term if the baby can be saved if the mother wants to). Side note: I've done a fair amount of research since I first saw this video about 4 days after it was posted. I have yet to see abortion defined as anything other than the termination of a pregnancy, I don't know where Illy got her definition from (11:33) let alone if it's true, because that would make treating uterine cancer illegal...

BANNED! something that got stuck in there removal? BANNED! miscarriage and this little corpse will calcify (get covered in bone material as a protective measure by your body but the horrifying terror of a dead body inside you is still there) and it could slowly kill you but you need it removed so you don't DIE? I still remember once she actually got past the 12 week mark in pregnancy, I was quite little but she picked me up and told me that soon I was gonna have a baby cousin. Then I remember a few weeks later she was skinnier and she looked really sad. I understand what happened now. But the people still yelled at her. They called her a c*nt, w**re, and so many other names all because she lost another child that she wanted so badly. When I was 12, i had an 11 year old classmate who was r**** by a family member of hers, and had a regnancy as a result. She had been too afraid to tell anyone, and by the time she did, the timeperiod in which someone is allowed to have an abortion was almost over. The thing was, her body was not ready for a pregnancy, she had been getting sicker and sicker as time passed, and was probably close to dying by the time she finally confessed. She was lucky that this happened 8 years ago, and that we live in a country that isn't as idiotic to refuse a dying child to abort their unwanted r*** result. But I can't imagine what some other places might have done to her. Imagine an 11 year old getting punished by some idiots over this. People who're "pro-life" and don't even take into consideration who the mother is, or what the pregnancy in question is doing to her, are very much not "pro-life". They're "pro-death" if you ask me.

They really are pro death. If you ask them “Would you rather get an early abortion if the baby inside you was slowly killing you and would cause the baby to die as well.” Most of them would say “I would rather die than to kill it.” How can you be pro life if you’re willing to kill yourself AND your fetus for “moral” reasons. Don’t even get me started on the women who refuse to get C-sections and tell people they would rather die than to “fail” as a mother not being able to give birth naturally 🙄

i had an early term miscarriage and went through an abortion via pills because the tissue was borderline necrotic and could have killed me. my mil at the time judged me for getting the pills for it while still concerned about my health. it was horrible having her judge me while i was trying not to die even if she didnt intend to. top that on the fact i was devastated from learning i was not able to bring my child to term, it was an emotional nightmare. i had done everything in my ability to stay healthy and do the right things to protect the baby, but it wasnt meant to be. Roe v Wade protected all women who needed procedures like mine, but now that its overturned, many women will either be dying or getting back alley care that could lead to them dying anyways in states that make it illegal/inaccessible thru legitimate health care facilities. I had an actual abortion at 10 weeks and I am grateful it was extremely easy for me to access. I literally felt like I was being ripped apart daily. Pregnancy nearly killed me, even at that early stage. I was terrified of my own body and I felt trapped. I did everything “right” (used protection, only slept with one partner) and I was still punished. If I didn’t have an abortion, I would be dead, along with the “baby” that legislators were trying to save.

Even if somebody COULD give birth safely, that does not mean they want a baby. Some people are just not ready or are never going to have children, and that's perfectly fine. Thank god you were able to get an abortion easily, it can be so hard going to get one, even if it's easily available. She was told that abortion was murder and she would be a horrible person if she aborted the fetus so she went through with the risky pregnancy, after months and months of pain, horrendous morning sickness and depression she died while giving birth to her child. Be 'pro-life' if you want, but do it quietly. Have your opinions, do not force them onto others. And they would prefer saving it than a person who they know for year to this stranger. My opinion is: Keep your pants up or be careful. If still you get pregnant, or you are raped you totally can abort without feeling bad. You tried your best/ not your fault. In other cases you might be stupid but still you have the choice and go do your life instead. It has always been an option. Let it remain.

@@TheLegendOfRandy well if ur a governor it means removing any tissue from the uterus 💀💀💀 But to me- well it isn’t really a tough topic that’s because I personally believe life begins after birth but some people differ. No one truly knows when life begins. Not even a scientist. So it really depends on belief. It varies per person- some people are for full pro life others are full pro choice while some people fall in between. Actually MOST people fall in between. It’s why I lean towards pro choice because it all depends on what you believe. Plus someone put it like this. Once in America they tried getting rid of alcohol. That obviously didn’t work- people still got it no matter what. It’s why I lean towards more of a pro-choice because it’s what you believe in. I remember a decade ago, a girl in...I want to say the Dominican Republic (? could be getting the country wrong, idk what abortion laws there are/were like) had leukemia and was getting chemo for it. Then they found out she was pregnant, and stopped the chemo because it could potentially cause her to miscarry, which would legally be considered an abortion since it caused the end of the pregnancy. She died a slow, painful death from the leukemia because the treatment was withheld from her. And no, the baby was never born, she died while still pregnant. Fuck laws like this.

I'm a man but I almost lost a very close friend of mine last year because she had a pregnancy that was literally killing her from the inside due to a variety of health problems she has. The potential overturning of RvW was weighing heavily on her mind as it was going on and fortunately she was able to get the dying fetus out of her and she was able to recover but there was this deep fear about everything going on at the time. I really want this country to pull it's head out of its butt and stop listening to senators who are willfully ignorant on issues like this so stuff like this becomes an actual protected law that can better the lives of those they deem unworthy of a healthy body and life.

@@HiImPaul62no one likes abortions and gets them for fun but sometimes they're necessary. If you really care about children you should care more about good sex education and contraceptives because they help against unwanted pregnancies and fight for better financial support for low income families. Some people cannot afford to have a child for whatever reason and even if they don't want to keep it in the end it still takes a toll on the body for nine months. Yes a fetus is technically alive but it couldn't sustain itself outside the mother's body and just like I couldn't force you to donate blood even if people are dying of blood loss you can't force someone to give up the right to decide what happens to their body. Abortions aren't nice or fun but unfortunately they're necessary, I hope you understand that

Anyone who watched this and somehow concluded that the unborn fetus is entitled to killing its mother or changing the course of the livings life forever more against their wishes? Most fertilized fetuses die on their own. Most. More unborn die than live, before abortions are even account for. Pregnancy is a minefield of life risking consequences and no your outlier relative who survived a dozen children does not disprove that. Facts are facts and there is not fact that entitles a slightly larger clump of cells that could eventually become life to greater freedom than the living. Because those billions of sperm cells dying in your balls every month? The eggs that dont get to roll the dice? They'd eventually become life too. Practice your beliefs with your own person, if you actually care about the unborn in the first place. The lack of support for adoption, education, and healthcare for children and mothers in america sure makes it clear that the vast slice of this horde do not care. Let alone rejecting the impact sex ed, healthcare, and contraception have on abortion.

I remember in 6th grade we were asked the question on our opinion on Abortion and if we could, what would we do about it. Answers were thrown back and forth, "We should end it." or "Abortion is wrong." When It got to my turn to speak, I said nothing because I knew that whatever reality I said about it, everyone including the teacher would turn against me. I would be sent to the principal ect. So, I stayed quiet. Nothing came out of my mouth about it. Thinking back on it now, I really feel like they shouldn't have asked 6th GRADERS a question like that. The reason why is because those teachers knew the answers the kids would have given. "End it" Or "It's wrong." The teachers respond, "Yes, exactly. " (Yes, these are FEMALE teachers.) But give them an answer like, "But it depends, it could save your life!" Then you would be looked down on, sent to the principal, and then be questioned for why you chose that answer. But since I moved schools, my current one is a lot better. I asked people who have been there longer than I have and they tell me that abortion was never talked about like how it said above.

Oh be quiet. Yes God dictates what you do with your body. You dont decide your baby's fate. If you got raped and you did not want the child. Put it up for adoption. Most abortion cases are not rape but for no reason at all. Speak about the majority of abortion cases instead of a portion. Life begins at conception, abortion takes after conception. Therefore abortion is murder. "Their own bodies" it isnt your body. It is Gods body. God owns you.

@@danap472 As sad as it is, the sponsors don't want to take a side likely because both sides have some extremists, and the corporate people don't think it's worth the risk. It's a shame that they won't even look at the video (meaning they would never see the part where it's a tumor). It's pretty much the latter half of the video where Illy says lawmakers don't know shit about the laws they're passing. I have mixed feelings on having an abortion, because there's arguments that sound valid for both sides, and because I'm not a female I'll never experience the fear that Illy was going through in the video. However, I believe that in the event that it's the mother or the child, there should be an option for the mother to save themselves if they choose. If the fetus, or "fetus" in the case of the video, is literally killing the host, then the option should always exist to save yourself. Just, if the baby is grown enough, at least try to make it instant death (for it) and lower the rate of failed abortions.

Wowie so much to say about this video. First off I want to thank you for being brave enough to come through with this story to educate people on this subject through your experience. Even though I am AMAB I can at least sympathize with the trauma that going through this frightening situation amidst the turbulent political climate around this issue. Also, and anyone who hates me for saying this can go fuck themselves, even if this had somehow been a fertilized egg cell I personally would support whatever your decision was as it's best for you and you seem like you would have made at least an educated decision based on the matter. I'm also super glad that the protestors were non violent when you went for your appointment. It's situations like this that cause me to be undecided if I'm "Pro Life" or "Pro Choice." With how complicated of an organ as the uterus can be I'm not confident if this is a failure due to language, medical education, legalese or all three but I do agree that it's something the law really shouldn't have any say in. The term "abortion" is really to broad of a term. While I will never support a woman who through her own decisions got pregnant decided to not carry the baby through to term even when she was medically capable of doing so especially after a heartbeat has already developed in the unborn life. I can accept that is not the only reason a woman would get an "abortion." Regardless of the circumstances of having the abortion I don't believe anyone outside of the sperm donor, the woman, and her doctor should have any say as to whether or not someone has access to a potentially life saving operation. This is such a messy legal situation and, unfortunately, I feel things will get worse before they get any better. You sharing this story I feel is definitely a step in the right direction and I again want to thank you for doing so. I hope you're not receiving too bad of community backlash about this. Wishing you the best, stay healthy, educated, and strong!
