And make sure you have the right size ball on your tow vehicle. Most U-Haul trailers require a 2 5/16 ball. I used to have a U-Haul rental sideline, and would always check when the customer showed up.....but some dealers may not.

Exactly. Once you get it tight. Lift the tongue against the ball and tighten it again. I had a large uhaul trailer recently that the lady there struggled to tighten. I tightened it after her and sprayed some pb blaster on the mechanism, which loosened it up greatly. They were already reluctant to let me tow their largest trailer with a 96 Maxima.

@@anance3220 You know, that's something that I didn't think about until just now. Uhauls do not use electric brakes. None of the enclosed trailers have brakes except the largest, the 6x12. Then they are equipped with hydraulic surge brakes. It's kind if hard to rent trailers with electric brakes when very, very few vehicles on the road are equipped with electric brake controllers.

I rented a U Haul trk. Loaded all my stuff from a storage unit to take to another storage unit in another state. I turn the truck in. They check the mileage. Has 10 user miles. They then start looking at the dash and under the truck for tampering of the odometer. They asked me, did you tamper with this. No. Why do it only have 10 miles, when from location you rented from to here is almost 400. My reply is you don't wanna know.. What I failed to tell them was I loaded it on my lowboy trl and hauled it down. Lol

That's a good one. I had a truck years ago where the speedo was wired into the tach. I'm at idle and I'm racking up miles. 16 mile rental with 110 miles on the odometer. They didn't want to believe it even when I showed them. Another truck, with duraspark (Ford Electronic module) ignition, died continuously while driving. They sent out 2 techs and wouldn't replace it because it always worked when they were there running the truck. I documented it numerous times. I get back in the truck, turn left to get on a freeway, and the engine dies. I have a wiped out left arm and can't steer without power steering, which has stopped as the engine dies. Up, over a curb, into a light pole. Effed up the front of the truck. Uhaul bitched and moaned like hell, but I called the state patrol and showed them my documents of the issue and this whole thing just went away! It's a lot better now, but 20 years ago it was a pretty wild operation.

I worked for U-haul back in the day. One of my "Adventures in Moving" involved an interstore transfer of trucks. I worked at the Fairfield Ca store, close to Travis AFB. We did a ton of one-way sales during the summer and often times need to gather(raid) other stores trucks. So me ,my buddy and boss along with every friend we could contact with a CDL jumped into a van for a trip to Sacramento to get 10 trucks. While there the boss says, nobodys leaving without a trailer. So I hook up a 6x12 trailer to the back of my 24' truck. Seems legit so far. So about 10 at night I'm cruising down I-80 between Vacaville and Fairfield, home stretch, I notice that despite struggling to go 55MPH ,nobody is passing me. Freeway is 4 lanes wide at this area. I noticed a bit of surging going up this incline too. I check the rearview and see the trailer in the right mirror, lots of it. Then I see the trailer in the left mirror too.. OOHHH No!!! I got pulled over safely and inspected the trailer mounting. Turns out the ball had broken the weld to the tongue. I did what any clever 18 year old would do. Dropped the shank back through the hole and high tailed it back to the shop. I was midpack in my arrival and helped park all the trucks and trailers. Around midnight I figured my buddy had gone home with his truck so I jumped on my bad motor scooter and headed home. Next day I found out his truck drove 2 miles before overheating and blowing up. His truck had no radiator hoses. Just another day in the life

For those that absolutly have to unhook these trailers.....when you go to put it back down reach under the wheel part and push up on the knob. Then tighten it as much as you can. After that push back on the trailer a few times then tighten it more. There's a reason why they only want the employees doing it.

I'm glad you brought up the U-haul issue with the trailer attachments. I rented a car carrier from U-haul years ago. The trailer attachment to the hitch/ball was exactly the same as you have explained in this video. The U-haul employee attached the trailer to the truck. When I attempted to drive my car onto the trailer at home, the trailer detached from the ball and hit the truck/SUV (Lincoln Navigator when they were still acceptable) in the gate. Horrible experience!!! I have never rented anything else from U-haul after that incident. Since then I have used Penske and never had any problems like that ever again, even though I moved my cars all over US.

Anyone who’s ever rented from U-haul knows that the square tightener thingy is NOT your friend! The first time I ever rented a U-Haul trailer, they insisted on hooking it up for me and they used a giant pipe wrench to tighten down the square thingy. One of the guys said , "you’ll thank me later for this" as they walked back into the office laughing. But he wasn’t kidding. When I removed the trailer and put it back on again, that’s when I discovered I could not keep that nut tight. Until I borrowed a pipe wrench and really cranked down on it, it kept coming loose. But thinking about all of my horrible U-Haul experiences, I can confirm everything that you are saying as being 100% true without exaggeration.

Doug: I have my own "Special" U-haul story. Went at Lunch time to rent a car trailer, paid the money and told the guy i would be back after work to pick it up. When i show up i find that they have assigned me the mosf beat down trailer there could be, fine i take it and go. I travel an hour North and I'm going to pick-up my 68 Coupedeville convertible that HAD to be moved from where it was being stored. So i get to the place, fire up the Caddy and get it positioned in front of the ramps, making sure im lined up good, straps are out of the way. Then the problem arises, one strap is shredded and the ratcheting mechanism is broke. After repeated calls to U-haul help line- now it's 10:00 pm- nobody can come help me, no other car trailers avaliable! So i decide to risk it- Luckily for me i always get the insurance even though it a rip off- so i load up and strap down the best i could with the bad side, hook the little trailer safety chain. But i'm spooked because im hauling it with my 67 F100 shortbed that i put 3/4 ton 5 bolt Camper Special suspension under. Taking all the back roads and taking it easy and sure enough i have a person because I'm going slow decides they are going to pull out in front of me. I get on the brajrs as hard as i can, locking up the tires only to have the Cadillac start a chain of events, snapped the broken side which led to the other strap being unable to keep it on the trailer, broke their safety chain like it was a toy. Now i have a 68 Cadillac that has jumped the stops and came forward landing on the crank handle, caving in the rear of the bed, tail gate, lights etc. And now from the weight of the cadillac has caused the tongue of the trailers red square you speak of to be bent and the cross member is sitting on top of it with my Reese hitch is dug into the pavenent solid. No way could i move it out of the roadway and here i sit on State Route 45 in Aynor,S C. With no flashers, dark as hell and its approaching midnight and almost getting plowed into, i have to PAY for a wrecker to come and pick up the front end of the Cadillac-now were blocking the whole road and of course someone called State Troopers- while i pull the trailer forward, so i creep up into a Church parking lot after throwing a chain around the cross member. So here i am with the rear of my pickup smashed in, no straps to strap the front tires and the Hwy Patrol officer's there assessing the whole situation. Have to hitch hike back home- days before cell phones- grab my V8 S-10 i have to get chains, chain binders, 5 ton chain come along, air compressor, generator, drill, chocks, fuses, bulbs, tools, stop at Wal-Mart and buy cheap trailer lights and their brand CHEAP straps. Flatten every tire of the Cadillac, crank each corner down to compress the suspension with the come along, put on chains with binders on all four corners, re air up the tires, nail chocks to the deck. Drill and mount trailer lights on to my now crushed bed, with the trooper stopping by multiple times to make sure that I'm not leaving with no lights. Had to leave my S-10 go buy disposable camera at Wal Mart take pictures, un load the Caddy, go BACK and retrieve my S-10 then head straight into work. Called U-haul at lunch time told them what happened and said i would be back with the trailer after work. They had a hell of a time getting the Square lock to unlock the trailer from my truck, was charged an extra day and then Chastised by the U-haul location MGR for using the strap side that was messed up and it was MY fault!! I responded with why would you assign me the junkiest trailer when there were other newer trailers avaliable and it wasn't my job to inspect trailers for safety! Ended up getting paid $1,700.00 (1998 $$) for the damage to my truck and had to threaten litigation because they were not happy with the estimate for the damage on the Cadillac! After about 2 months of back and forth i received a phone call from Corporate stating that they would give me fair book value for the Cadillac which was just a little more than the repair costs. It was a take it or leave it one time deal. Was told in a round about way they would drag me out in court and they had the money to do so. So i had no choice to accept the "deal"! Never have i had the chance since to be able to afford another 68 Coupedeville Convertible. Sure miss that car! Especially a triple white Caddy convertible which was a blast to cruise around in Myrtle Beach.

I worked for a moving truck agency. A guy rented one of our few remaining 26 foot trucks, refused the insurance, and said he knew all about how this racket (insurance) works. One hour later, he is back at our counter, having been delivered to us by a police car. odd enough, but it gets better. Our trucks are marked 11 feet 6 inches tall. He explained that since he was being charge by the mile ( he was not), he took a shortcut to get to his house. This shortcut was a 12 rail honest Burlington Northern owned cargo train bridge 9 feet 5 inches tall. My boss asked him why he took an 11 foot tall truck under a 9 foot bridge. He said he thought those height limits were only for commercial trucks, and did not apply to rental moving trucks. We were dumbstruck. The officer said he had chased him to stop him, but he hit the throttle, and was doing close to 50 MPH when he hit the bridge, wedging almost 10 feet of box, by our measurements when the two parts were brought back to the lot. it violently separated the box from the frame, stuck the box to the bridge, and bent the frame of a 5 ton truck, and all he wanted to do was rent another truck. The officer had to sit down he was laughing so hard. The guy looked at us with no concept of what he had done. He bent the bridge, the railroad had to close it for a week or two so they could repair it. We referred the guy to our competition, then called them to warn them he was coming. Remember he refused the insurance, he had a multiple thousand tow and recover bill, a totaled 2 year old truck, box was sardine canned, and the railroad wanted to sue us for damage. We got that worked out. Once we explained the situation, their lawyer agreed we had lost control of the situation as soon as he turned the key and left the lot. They sued the guy. No one would rent him a truck and he had thousands of dollars in damage to everything he touched, and NO INSURANCE for it. He was not covered by his auto or home insurance. Without even being on Vin Wiki, He definitely beat being banned from U-Haul. He still had no idea what he had done when he left our store.

As someone who rents U-Hauls at my job (we are local dealer, not big center) I have had many excursions with that coupler. I do think design is horrible and have cut my thumb several times tightening/untightening. I feel your pain, surprised it came off, I believe Doug was right saying something was wrong, I think I have seen one trailer that was fully tightened that came off someone's truck (same situation, driveway has a bump, when they hit it, came off, chains kept it from slamming ground.

Soo, Here is my trailer story. Not U Haul, but Ryder. September 2001, moving from Northern VA to Atlanta GA. ABT Freight lines left a Semi-trailer in the drive way and we hired professional movers to pack it. Intrinsically knowing that it would not meet our time frame, I rented a Ryder 20-something truck (24-26, I don't really remember), with a car hauler for my wife's Mazda Miata . Not a car runs on the back wheels, but a real all up car hauler. I take the rig home, and stop on the road that connects two dead end cul de sacs and disconnect the trailer from the truck and back the truck down the drive to load it with enough stuff to get us through the anticipated delay between when we arrive and when the moving truck/trailer arrives. We lode the truck and drive the Mazda onto the trailer and head out. Just a few miles before the Georgia line on I-85 the truck feels weird. I look at the right side rearview and see the Mazda approaching from that side, a few seconds later I see it approaching on the other side. And, there is no traffic behind me! Lots cars on the shoulders, but now one near me. I finally got slowed down and a miracle exit ramp appeared and I took it. Stopped and greeted my hysterical wife who witnessed the entire event from our Volvo that she was following me from. Safety chains saved me when the trailer jumping the ball. One trailer tire was trashed, as was the wiring harness. Ryder told us to take it to a dealer in GA. We turned on the emergency lights on the Mazda and proceeded, as the Ryder dealer was less that ten miles from our destination. We took whole shebang to our new home and turned the trailer and truck into the Ryder dealer the next day.

Just as a testament to how STRONG normal trailer ball hitch attachments are. My brother and I (and a few friends) were driving back from a VW car show once. One of the friends was driving the truck with the (open, steel) car trailer attached to the back as that was the "emergency" vehicle in case any of us broke down in our finicky old VWs on the 6+ hour drive home. Anyway, at some point (likely due to all of us driving the cars doing a bunch of shenanigans), we had gotten separated from the truck. Now, there are two ways to go home from where we were, and while those two paths stay separated for 95% of the journey home, they both meet about 10 miles before we get there, on the same road, to take the same exit to the house. SOMEHOW, and we're still not exactly sure how this happened... despite the truck taking path A and us (in the cars) taking path B, we both ended up LITERALLY right behind each other when the two paths met back up. No, we did not plan this. At that EXACT moment where we had pulled in behind each other to follow each other home, the trailer dropped off of the back of the truck. Showers of sparks shot up from under the truck as the trailer jack scraped along the cement at 70 MPH. Seconds later the tires of the trailer started smoking as well as they had locked up from the trailer e-brake being activated. LUCKILY, the chains on that trailer were beefy as hell, and stayed connected. We were SUPER lucky that none of the cars were on the trailer at that point or else it would have been a hell of a lot harder to control with a few thousand pounds on top of those locked up wheels (all 4 of them.) Anyway, on to the entire point of this story. We eventually all got pulled over. We had expected that the ball had perhaps fallen off of the drop bar or maybe broken, or that the hitch attachment had broken. But no, we were ALL wrong. The freaking huge ass 5/8 inch stainless hitch pin had sheared in half. No, the hitch pin clip didn't break, the literal hitch pin itself had sheared in half. Half of it was still stuck in the receiver itself (hence why we knew it failed.) Anyway, the testament to how strong the normal hitch attachment points are is here. The trailer was STILL ATTACHED to the ball mount, and was dragging it along the ground. The ball mount itself had been ground down at an angle from being dragged for as long as it was. Despite weathering multiple huge bumps, shocks, rocks, everything, the ball was STILL perfectly attached to the trailer, and it wasn't even broken in the slightest. The mechanism still worked with ease when we went to remove the ball and ball mount from the trailer. The moral of the story is, those ball mounts may SEEM rickety and loose, but they work good as hell and there is no way you're going to break one or lose a trailer if it's properly attached to one. While we didn't exactly have a spare hitch pin to complete the journey back home, there were a few huge bolts in the truck toolbox that worked perfectly well for the few miles we had left before we got home. We locked the nuts down on that thing as hard as we could, then locked two nuts together by backing one off onto the other. We stopped a couple of times on the way home to make sure it was good (it was.) When we got home we had to cut the bolt off with a grinder because of how destroyed the threads were. So I suppose moral number 2 is "Make sure all of the safety stuff is properly attached when towing a trailer, and make sure the brake pin/line is properly adjusted so that it locks the brakes even IF the trailer is still attached by chains." We all had a good drink when we got home and were extremely thankful that nothing more eventful happened that night. In the end, nothing was really broken (other than the ball hitch and hitch pin of course) and nobody was hurt so... win win.

As a former U-Haul dealer my self I can tell you right now that the ball and tongue receivers are absolute bullshit on the trailers... Thats why we alwats told customers to stop every so often to check to make sure the "Square knobby thing" is still locked into place. Funny thing is - i heard about this story from one of the main uhaul managers in my area.

The design that uhaul has is actually pretty cool. That square crank knob allows their trailers to go on most ball sizes so you don't have to change the size of your ball. Just crank it down and tighten it on to whatever's on your vehicle.

I've towed my race car for years with U-Haul trailers. You have to fully tighten that thing, then move forward a foot or two and tighten it again. Yep, dumb design! Almost as dumb as the fact that they don't trust their customers with a spare tire, so when you experience a blowout - or three - you've got to wait over 3 hours each time. Ask me how I know...

I can confirm U-Haul has a blacklist because I was put on it. Why? Because I caught a U-Haul employee in Mead CO writing my driver's license and credit card information down in her personal notebook. When I called her out for identy theft she played victim. When I called corporate they completely blew it off and put me in their system as a belligerent customer hence the blacklist. Horrible company with horrible customer support.
