You'll like that hand thrower until a clay hangs up when your Dad is throwing for you, and the comb of your shotgun saves the side of your face!! Ask me how I know, still have the gun with the clay debris embedded in it!!! As a NRA and NSCA certified shotgun instructor, I'll leave my comments on your shooting tips at using anything more than a Modified for clays is like playing tennis with a baseball bat.

If you find you're doing everything right but still missing, you're probably hesitating and being too intentional and deliberate. If you're still telling yourself "shoulder the gun.... squeeze the trigger" you're gonna miss a lot because doing that should almost just be like a thought. Once you have the feeling you're locked on to the target, squeeze off your shot.... don't second guess because chances are your instincts were right the first time. Waiting only lets it get further away and you have to reset all your calculations. Morale of the story, without actually rushing your shot, shoot early rather than later and don't think too hard about it. It'll become natural

I think the same is true for competition. Only times I physically tell myself what to do is at the start to "breathe" and when I get the first mag in the magwell "rock it in" or "slap it in".

Absolutely love your videos. I just started shooting shotguns about 3 weeks ago. I started out with a new Mossberg 500 20 gauge I bought from walmart. Although I should have patterned it, I went straight to the skeet range and fell in love. 3 weeks later (3 days ago from the message) I now have a remington v3 walnut. Absolutely love this gun. It is so beautiful, really not that difficult to clean, recoil is virtually non existent (less than my 20 gauge), and I don't think I'll ever have to worry about jams. This gun ejects the shells about 10 feet, which is insane. I need to get a deflector or something for it so it is not so difficult to find my shells. I really wish you lived closer to me and could teach me how to hunt. Also one thing I didn't mention is I am a pretty good shot. I have shot pistols and ARs with my dad maybe once or twice a year, but I like shooting shotguns much more. The first round of skeet I shot, I busted maybe 5 clays. After that, the next 8 or so rounds I've shot I have busted around 15 clays every round. I actually outshot one of my friends who has been hunting for forever, and that was only my third and fourth round of clays I've ever shot

When we spoke to the Benelli rep he told us the modified choke is best for the big steel loads because it gives a more uniform pattern and the full choke put alot more holes in your pattern. Its not the same with lead though

The place I practice has about 10 electric traps in front of the stand , similar to five stand except you shoot 25 shots from one stand and you don't have a clue what bird is coming. Could be a 15yd duck dropping in front of you to a rising teal or crosser. The traps are changed quite often too so it's never the same , really feels like hunting.

I haven't had a chance to look through all of your videos yet but something I'd like to hear your opinions on would be regarding shot selection. I shoot 3" 3 shot most of the time with a full patternmaster choke. Is there a time of the season or circumstance where you change YOUR shells to something different?

My son just turned ten, and got his first hunting license this year after completing hunter’s education. We got some rabbit, dove, and a few quail. I’ve always been taught to close one eye and just use my dominant eye when aiming; however lately I’ve been reading that with shotguns it’s beat to keep both eyes open. Tried this the other day and had a hard time adjusting to seeing the proper sight picture. My son has a pheasant hunt coming up feb7. Any suggestions I can pass on to him?

Hey. I am new to the shotgun shooting. Got the same gun Franchi Affinity. We are shooting pheasants and I havent success at all. Pheasants in our hunting ground are popping extremely close. Very few popping up at 30-40 yards. What kind of stock choke should I choose (got with gun IC, M, F)? Tried with dispersante B&P ammo and wad ammo to gain more spread and still missing like idiot. Fitted stock (I think properly) with Franchi shims. Dont know what to do :( Now switched in desperation to IC. Should I chose Modified choke and stick to it and combine that with wad (instead of plastic container) ammo? We are using from 3 to 4mm max lead pellets. So far I bought 3.1 mm and 3.3 from B&P and it is dammn expensive. Thought that I will have better results but hell no. Its like lottery. Sometime I bring down few, but mostly they fly away. There isnt too much practice range in my country because new strict EU regulations for shooting ranges. My colleagues hunters didnt have much practice but they shoot and bring down that birds...only me shooting like idiot without success. Dont know if I am aiming good at close range. I know if bird is in speed flight that I have to aim in front of bird but how much, where, when...so frustrated. Tried to see pattern and seems good on hmm...30-40 steps. Consistent, without big empty holes, good coverage. Do you have any humble suggestion for novice shotgun shooter? When I look how you took down birds, it seems to me so surreal, practically impossible :)))) Got bunch exp and outstanding results with carbine (bucks, foxes, jackals, martens, wild boars, bears, rams....etc) but shotgun and that kind of conception is totally new to me. So frustrated that I am near to throw all that ammo, shotgun away...no luck for 2nd pheasant season :((( Ye, tried to hunt ducks as well. Well, they come, whole flock...shooted few times like Rambo...-> they just flew away without scratch.

I'd love to practice like this if I could, but living in Canby Oregon is an extreme challenge. Not much open public space nearby that allows stuff like that. Most clubs require expensive membership fees, long wait times for memberships, and very limited on what you can do. I've hunted all over the Portland area for 7.5, 8, and even buckshot and had to just order online to ship because availability here is abysmal. I just got into this as a sport, but the two roadblocks of finding a nearby place to shoot and getting the ammo to shoot has been quite a feat.

Looking online the answer seems to be that it depends on your gun. In a forum a user got this answer from Remington: "You can shoot steel shot through any Remington barrel made since 1950. In a fixed full choke, you can shoot up to a size #2 pellet. Anything larger would not perform well out of a fixed full choke and could open up your muzzle over time."
