Welcome back to another video! I wanted to explain to you all why I decided to leave A&E as I realised some of you may not know!
As I mention in the video, it was not an easy decision to leave A&E, as after all it is what I have trained my whole life to do! But I feel in this role as Youth Mental Health ambassador I can REALLY make a difference to the UK's mental health. It's a challenging role and I can say that no day is the same, from campaigning to visiting schools, doing talks and visiting early support hubs around the country.
I hope this has given you some insight into why I had to leave A&E and what exactly I am campaigning for! Thank you for watching this video and see you again soon!

I’m with you mate. I had on paper a really highly paid prestigious job in Canary Wharf for 15 years. The job was unrelenting 24/7 stress and drove me into a deep despairing hole and I gained so much weight. One day I broke and quit. My company recognised this and fortunately gave me a pay off. I’m slowly recovering from that severe episode of mental illness and coming out of it thankfully. I have since lost loads of weight and physically feel so much better. All I would say is the health benefits are worth giving it a go and mentally boost confidence. I’m sure you know all this anyway. My best mate x

I really understand the frustration with the waiting list. I work in CAMHS and our waiting lists are long, but it’s simply the need vs the resources. There is so much need and so little resources by comparison, we’re underfunded and don’t have enough staff to give people a 2 week waiting list. I may work with a young person for 10 weeks (i do short interventions), so if my caseload is full, I can’t take anyone else off the waiting list for 10 weeks. It’s hard and frustrating, hopefully you’ll get the funding. Fingers crossed🤞

As a paeds nurse, most heartbreaking thing is the amount of mental health patients we look after in crisis. Many end up resident with us for long periods but the general ward does not feel like the right place to help them at all. More support in community to help before it gets to a point of crisis is so essential! I really hope your campaigning will make a difference, it's a comfort to know you are out their trying to get the support and attention this cause deserves :-)

This is really helpful (I had been wondering). Thanks for explaining your decision & priorities so transparently Alex. It’s good to follow your heart. I’m sure you were great in A&E but working to help the mental health crisis is very very important too. X

Hubs for young people are so important and it’s great you are pushing this. When we were in Australia they had mh hubs for young people upto age 24 where psychiatrists; psychotherapists; counsellors; art therapists etc and even therapy dogs - all in one space, relaxed, supportive, specialists in young people as they have specific needs. So important. We’ll done Alex.

Mental health is of the utmost importance. I think it’s amazing that you’re raising awareness of mental health, people need to not be ashamed to admit they’re struggling and to seek help. It’s especially important for young people. Also, never underestimate the impact mental health has on the physical health of an individual. I think you’re an amazing person to use this platform in such a positive way to raise awareness of such a very important issue. You are always so open and honest. As you’re well aware, mental health can impact on family and friends of an afflicted person too. Thank you so much for being so genuine, understanding, compassionate and caring. These qualities are so important in a doctor and can really make all the difference from a patient perspective. You are someone who will definitely make such a positive difference to so many people in this field. Take care.

His Alex, signed up today, though I follow you on social media. I had a breakdown in 2020. No longer work due to my anxiety and depression. On mens...I do have a small group of us on Facebook, to share our experience. People are still afraid of opening up. I wouldn't wish my illness on my worst enemy. My brother has personality disorder. I am 55...life has certainly given me a rough hand. Look forward to seeing more of you and your views. Take care, and all the best to you.

Alex you are doing so much more as a young MH ambassador raising MH awareness issues than you could ever do in an A&E department. You are a natural at communicating and being a young doctor you are in touch with young people via social media platforms so you can make real changes for the better by speaking to those at the top and getting them to listen to what young people are experiencing. I would love to talk to you someday to tell you about the number of young autistic people who are being sectioned daily because they are struggling to cope with life and who are then dying whilst under section either through suicide or as in my 20 year old daughters case, she had some kind of fit and her heart stopped. A year on and I still have no answers, still haven't seen her post mortem, and still have no idea why she died whilst under 2:1, 24/7. Sadly she is not the only young ASD patient to die whilst under section, I personally know of 4 others and there are currently over 3,000 autistic people under section in mental hospital with staff who do not understand autism and think they are attention seekers when they are struggling and having meltdowns. This is criminal and needs to change. Please help us parents.

And if digging even deeper to look at the root cause of mental health, a lot of the time it is due to some sort of trauma that people have been through. Higher demand on MH services to provide effective MH care for those affected now so it’s important work that you’re doing. Thank you.

Isn’t it true that seeking mental health support, counselling etc appears on your medical record? And isn’t it true that this can have a negative impact on getting life insurance and how much you pay. Is this true Alex? I would love to hear your thoughts. I’m a big fan of yours!

Please advocate for safer medicine while you’re there, I have sexual dysfunction from a SSRI called lexapro, mental health and psychical health are important. I really hope everyone gets proper help and certainly agree with your goals, you’re a good person, you can do it you just have to believe and commit to that belief and never settle for less

Unfortunately it’s probably worse than 2 years. Adults and children aren’t getting referred to community mental health services now as easily as previous. They have tightened criteria due to overwhelm. It helps the services numbers look better than they are. I was told the public psych would only see me if I went off all medication for a month or gp could manage if she decided to continue up one of my medication doses, which she said she didn’t know if that was my best option. she was struggling with mental health medication (which lead to me having discontinuation syndrome but won’t go into it). With me so I had no option but to do the month off so I could get the right support. Which meant I needed time off work. Which meant my nhs service suffered from being more short short staffed. Which lead me to have a return to work meeting and a meeting for having too much sick leave. Which I was told having too many days off let’s the team down (even though my colleagues supported me). Could this have prevented if I could have accessed services earlier. Maybe. But I didn’t meet criteria earlier (even with my history). I had to take 3 weeks off with my family in Australia calling me daily and worrying for me. It was a rough 2 months. But I got through it. I worry that not everyone would. And even if they do the damage it causes can haunt someone longer term. I know mental health services are really strained. I can’t blame them directly. They did their best. My gp did her best. But she is a general practitioner, she cant know every speciality. She called a few times a week and really tried. But I hope in the future criteria can be less tight and early treatment and help can be had

I appreciate what are you doing however it's not always accurate to say that the wait is very long to access support - I work in IAPT and our wait for aged 16+ is 4-12 weeks depending on the complexity with the average being 6 weeks, and even quicker for a group. I don't want YP to think it's not worth looking into. Thanks.

One of the reasons why there is such a long waiting list is because when they built new psychiatrist hospitals they didn’t build enough wards .The care in the community never worked and nothing was put in its place . Be good to hear how your projects work , all the best x
