I too returned to India after spending a decade in the US and returned my green card to the US consulate in New Delhi. For me personally it was a good decision. I'm 41 now and planning to retire early in a few years. Early retirement is not possible in the US unless you're a millionaire.

Your decision was perfect. Nothing is more important in life than family. Earning money can be done in India too. Pardes pardes hota hai. Let me tell you frankly Indians staying in America in there deep heart want to return back to India, but nobody confess easily. You made the right decision at the right time.

I am moving back on March 2nd which is less than a week. I am a US citizen, I got all my university degrees here in US. I pretty much accomplished and proved in work environment what I wanted but during all these years even when I was a student here I was carrying some sort of psychological stress which sometimes disappears and then comes back which reminds me that you don't belong here. US is a market place very similar in nature like amazon and I think we student or employment based immigrants have a shelf life and if they live in US beyond their shelf life then they develop this stress. One more this stress that I am talking about only feel those who can think above and beyond and all they are not materialistic. Well this is a long and deep topic. Thank you so much for posting this. It's not an easy decision. Having the opportunity to live in the US is great. But one thing you have done that I really admire is you made a conscious, well thought out decision that was right for you. Some get caught up and by the time we sit to choose it can be too late. Some stay for the children, but children grow and leave. Plus we don't get younger... Decision differs from person to person but in the end live where you feel most fulfilled.

This wisdom occurred to me before applying for green card...I came back...but it took 11 years for this gyaan to happen

Moved back to India 18 months ago after staying for more than 7 years. Moved back because of kids and old aged parents. It took 6 months for my son to adjust for 4th grade but he is doing fine now. I also wanted to retire early. I am 43 now and be able to retire in couple of years. To retire in US i got to work at least till 60. With india's bright future and infrastructure development there won't be lot of difference in lifestyle 10 years from now. Only thing that's precious is the time. If you have money you can buy time.

You did the right thing. I wish I could have done that. Nothing is more important then raising your kids by your self and teaching them your culture and traditions and values, which USA kids are missing. When you turn 70 or 80 you will understand this better. What is family actually is. God bless you.

It is very clear that money, position and comfort doesn't bring happiness and peace. Staying with family, taking part in day to day events, festivals eating variety of food, wearing colorful clothes, being with grand parents, aunts and uncles brings happiness. Of course it is every individuals choice.

Well described. Family and friends suggest based on what every other person is doing being in the same boat. But, what matters to me is what I want make out of my life at various stages. I was able to make following decisions organically without anyone’s influence - I wanted to step out and explore student life in western world. - I wanted to work and make the most out of time. - I have enjoyed my married life with two kids on foreign soil. I’m not able to make one single decision despite of putting so much efforts into it that is going back and settling down in my hometown. I ask my brother, older parents, pretty much lost connection with most of my relatives- I get roomy gloomy messages and first of all I don’t understand why I’m relying on others feedback.

Congratulations for being brave to take a decision following your heart 👍👍 My cousin sister and her family have also returned . They are very happy and we too . Her son has got admission in a good school. If you feel any strong connection with your mother land , your relations then it is of no use to be so called PRACTICAL to stay back in foreign country. Because you can effectively earn same lifestyle from your home comfort in today's work from anywhere system . If you do not have such emotion then I would suggest be PRACTICAL because material comfort is important for you . I think you belong to the first category. Listen to your heart.❤

What a clear thought you have! It takes courage to turn down the temptation of gaining citizenship of US. I am a chief engineer in merchant navy. Been going to shores of the world since 21 years. I have seen each continent and country where there is a port. Never ever thought of shifting to any other country despite having the opportunity in Canada,Singapore,Hongkong and recently an offer from Cyprus.

Hello there...watching from Tokyo, we were at similar crossroad 25 years ago in NYC, the company was willing to file a greencard however we wanted a more freedom on career locations and growth. With greencard you are stuck with the same firm. After looking at options, we left and move to Tokyo. BTW, I also had a Canadian Green Card but never return to neither place. You are making right decision, family 1st and time and health. Cheers brother.

Filing 485 does not guarantee GC in year for Indians due to backlog/country cap. In current scenario , It makes sense to return to India and move on with life. As always grass looks green on other side :) With I140 approved , PD is locked , you can always apply for GC in future OR go for counsellor processing when FAD are current.

Good decision buddy. I have been living in the US on and off for over 30 years. I left US, moved to india and moved back a few times. I only applied for my green card in late 2000s and got it just couple of years ago after 12 years. I am semi-retired now and tail end of my 50s and only reason I am sticking around to get my US citizenship iss because I have vested more in the US than India and it makes it tough from financial mobility if I abandon US citizenship and they are making it tougher and tougher. I don't have a family so have lot more flexibility. One thing I found very difficult during the 90s and 2000s was travel and employment between US and India. Companies back then paid me differently in india if I have a green card vs not having a green card. I found my friends who had green card got a sweet 'expat' package working in India vs for the same job I was offerred a lot less (indian package) as the IT employerss found that I was not that 'mobile'. Obviously most companies were servicing US clients and without greencard they have to file H1B or get me business visas. Even the product companies that just wants indian employees would see having a green card as some kind of "additional skill" that would benefit them so there was a "premium" attached to it. Another bizarre thing I noticed was indian employers always ask you "what is your story?" if you have given up your greencard. And they all ask these questions in a indian sort of way and this story you just told us in this video will have to explained over and over again. The only time this works in your favor is if you are financially independant and are out of the rat race. Even there if you are a businessman and entrepreneur the freedom you get by having a "green card" or a US citizenship is lot more than a Indian passport. I knnow it makes me sick how the world is organized but when you travel around the world especially in asia and latin america or even in europe ssometimes the pain that a indian passport holder has togo is lot more. Again if you are not a bussiness traveller or you dont have products or stuff you want to sell to europe or north america you dont have to worry about this stuff. You will be amazed how much value the chinese give to a american passport or green card holder vs a Indian businessman. Finally, You did a great thing moving the kids at a earlier stage. You can imagine 90% of my indian friends who live in the US have faced the same decisions. Have several who have moved sslightly later in stage and the kids are sometimes in miserable state of mind. Lot of the young ones who grew up the US find take long to adjust and depending on your home nurture some hate India and can't wait to come back to the US straining parent-children relationships. Lot of the kids whose children moved to india at 10 or so come back to the US to do their masters on their own but then finances and culture becomes a problem. A friend of mine moved back to the US to be with his kids and is miserable and rootless. So again you did hte right thing. Dont worry about it too much or most importantly dont analyze it or ever ever regret it. Like the american society leave your kids to their own and hope they make it in India but they are lucky to have two wonderful cultures and parent countries to host them. America is a amazing amazing country and has been veyr very good to me and it continues to shower itss love and blessingss to millions of indians like me and your dilemma is a "good delimma" to have and for that we should all be thankful to america. At same time India is a super amazing country too and I just hope we learn to embrace both these cultures and its people without judgment or bias. Jai Hind. God bless America.

Amazing Video! I have been in Canada for 14 years now and with god grace very well settled but there was always this emptiness that followed me. I never wanted to settle here as in very first year of my life here I figured that I will never feel like I belong here. My husband was hesitant to move to india till last year as like so many people he did not visit india after he moved here and was still living in a bubble that india is still same how it was 15 years ago but after observing how amazingly india is growing and developing he couldn’t help himself and decided to move back .

I think money will never be enough whether one is in India or US so for me the only doubt in moving back is how can I help my daughter adjust to education rigor of India let’s say when she will be in 6th grade. Nothing like india Good decision

I abandoned it 22 years back. My medical was done, all processes were completed, I nevertheless abandoned it. I did it so that no temptation can take me back to the USA. I had seen many people who returned back to india after getting their green card. Most of them went back to the USA before the expiry of their green card. I did not want to leave thar bridge in place. My daughter is a US citizen by birth and she is going back there in Aug for her Masters. Now she will decide for herself.

You believe something and you did according to your belief thats bigger than anything in life. Because people think and plan many things to do but not all are achievable

America is place for saints, I mean if someone can enjoy the loneliness. I used word saint because life style in america is do your 8 hour job have dinner and go sleep.

But If i miss this opportunity, I will not be able to to move there after 2 years, as i grow old. However, I have some elders at home, whom I am going to miss. What do you think I should be doing?

I took US citizenship and wanted to move my mother here but she refused. I visit her every year for 2-3 weeks and plan to take another job or consulting job so that I can spend 2-4 months with her in a year.

Everyone needs to realize that you stayed enough time to be financially stable in India. Right decision for you…. But only time will tell if it was the right decision for your kids. Interesting story.

One question - How did you handle the discussions with your good friends/well wishers in the US(who are staying back) who try to justify the advantages by living in the US? They express that they respect your decision but then still the discussions are there where they resist you to not go back.

If you really did what you felt good at that time, I dont see happiness in you either. I felt you regretted. May be I am wrong. But I dint blame u. In a way you did the right thing. You are not a slave anymore both spiritually and humanly. I hold citizenship after 23 years. It was long and boring. Lost touch with most of family and friends. They all moved on. If I want to go back now, which I contemplated for 20 odd years, I have to build all relationships almost from scratch. My only suggestion if you dont mind, you could have done this video with little cheer since you desparately wanted to be back. Tell me, are you happy you came back for whatever reasons you had? I don't know what to comment but it is so deep!!!! Waiting for Green Card is nothing sacrificing your time (25's to 45's) which you will never get back. Parents will be getting older😢.

If you file your 485 in California the current processing times says it will take 31 months as of today, July 6. Nowhere near 6-12 months like you might have expected. But I guess it depends on where you file it coz in other centers 6-12 is the norm.

Assuming you are eligible for citizenship at the right time (kids are not grown up yet) then would you suggest getting it? Another point, your/our kids can still choose to go to college to usa. If you don’t have unlimited visa (or citizenship) then you will be again far from your/our kids? If you have citizenship then you can easily go back to America anytime and stay for longer duration.

What is your PD? Indians don't get GC easily. They are giving GC to 2012 filers now. First of all these people who returned never had any PR from USA. All these people were on temporary visas. There was never a question of you settling down in USA with out PR.

To raise daughters in USA is a big challenge. Therefore people with daughters would like to come back to India before they grow old. If you have full fledge green card grown up daughters would not agree for you to come back to India. This is the truth.
