Saw your other vid.❤.... thanks for your honesty, transparency....For groups like amish, mormon, scientology, catholoism, many other groups who keep tight control over their people, escape is the only way... congratulations on your successful life... 🎉🎉 happy trails.

The "tight control" is what is so concerning. I grew up in one of the "cults" you mentioned and it's challenging to break away and a stress with family. And, yes, I believe that they are cults.

Josh, thank you for sharing. I too, made a similar decision as a young teenager. I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, and when I started to think for myself I began questioning the religion, its rules and practices, and the conflicting ideologies. By the time I was 15, I had stopped attending meetings. That was nearly 50 years ago, and I've said ever since that the only good thing that came from it was my ability to see the good in every experience, for everything we experience helps make us who we are. Some take that and live a more positive life, some take that to help feed their hates and resentments. I will say I enjoy your videos very much, your demeanor throughout each one is exemplary, your practices are safe and effective, and your equipment is amazing! Whoever designed that stuff put a lot of thought and effort into it, every scenario you encounter is handled because of that.

Josh, I have been watching your videos for some time now. We are all products of our environment, and how we are interacted with and are treated goes a long way, determining how we grow up to be adults. I was fortunate to be raised in a loving and caring family that made me appreciate who I am. From your description of things, you weren't near as fortunate. That, however, has only temporarily slowed you down in life. You are making a greater significance in others, perhaps more than you even know. The way you handled yourself with the shed retrieval business while sometimes under fire of irate and unreasonable individuals has always impressed me. Josh, despite a rough start in life, you still are a great example of how we should all live and care for others. God has given purpose to you in life. We should all be so fortunate.

Josh you definitely made a very weighted decision and I certainly understand how heavy it must have been to think on it and go against your family and beliefs. I would’ve made the same decision from what I’ve seen others do for a life but no doubt it would’ve ate me terribly up inside and outside. You ended well on the path you took as with a beautiful wife and two boys that is a wonderful blessing. I hope you can reach out to younger Amish to show them some success before they decide to leave or stay but so they can have some comfort of mind. Some stories do not end well in that alcohol and drugs get in the picture to disrupt their lives. Thanks for the time you’ve chatted on this subject and I would say any religion should have you as a speaker to show what life should be or strived to be. Keep making those videos as I’m a fan!

Swartzentruber Amish formed as the result of a division that occurred among the Amish of Holmes County, Ohio, in the years 1913-1917. The bishop who broke away was Sam E. Yoder. The Swartzentruber name was applied later, named after bishop Samuel Swartzentruber who succeeded him. - Wikipedia

I know a woman about your age who left the Amish because she wanted to be an MD. She talked the same way about her parents; but, if who you are inside is someone who isn't suited to that kind of life, there's no virtue in them refusing to surrender you to yourself.

Thank you for sharing this. I am glad you were able to obtain the freedom you longed for all those years and have been able to live the life you want, on your own terms. Any religion that prevents its members from living freely is flawed, in my opinion. For years, I've been under the impression all Amish churches allowed for Rumspringa, which I thought was pretty progressive and admirable, but now I learned from your video that some were much more strict in what they allowed their members to do and Rumspringa was not a universal tradition. Thanks again for sharing your story and I look forward to learning more!

We have 3 different Amish around my immediate area. Swartzentruber are one. They have the least amount of any modern conveniences. No lights on buggies. No running water. The other Amish are allowed different conveniences according to the church. One can ride bicycles, but the others can only ride kick scooters. I hired out as a driver and drove many Amish and learned quite about the differences. One thing I learned was that although the Amish would talk and joke and socialize at auctions and such, you (the English) would never be considered friends

I grew up in a very conservative community and kids from public school would always ignorantly say "Are you Amish?". After hearing just a little bit about your early years, I can say no one really has a clue until they've walked in your shoes. I've always been fascinated by the Amish community but know very little about it. I have so many questions though! Myself also being a Josh near the North Dayton area, and having visited Holmes county a few times, my curiosity grows stronger each time I visit. I thank you for satisfying the curiosity and explaining things in the community that would otherwise seem strange or odd. I'll be looking forward to your testimony as I believe we all have a path we each need to walk in order to get us where we need to be. That's a very broad statement but I think you know what I mean. I love that you are living life to the fullest and I love the positivity and drive that you have in all that you do and I thank you for sharing it with all of us KZfaq geeks!

You are doing so well. One thing I am proud of is you did not lose your faith in God when you left. I know a few that did. Your Amish upbringing is very apparent in the way you handle being confronted, your forgiving nature, and your work ethic. I lived among the Amish (Old Order) in Cherry Creek, NY. I think the word you were looking for when talking about the Amish not having paint horses is flashy/fancy instead of bright. I have seen some pretty bright Belgians. Something about clothes is, zippers are not allowed and girls and women cannot have buttons. The buttons thing depends on the community's own rules. The same with colors of the clothes though none can be bright and/or have patterns like flowers etc. Must be plain. You talking about colors got me to thinking about their quilts and hex signs. They have patterns and are brightly colored. Thanks for sharing this video with us.

It is always a joy to see someone break away from organized religion! Life is hard enough to negotiate without the encumbrances of imposed by religion. You and your wife are the poster child of what that freedom can bring. You don't know how much guidance and hope you bring to those young kids who have those thoughts rattling around in their heads. Now if only we could get the internet into those communities.
