Comparison points:
1. XF10 has slower autofocus than the Ricoh GR II, but is more accurate.
2. XF10 SR+ mode works fantastic, better technology than RICOH GR II
3. If you prefer shooting RAW, get RICOH GR II
4. You can own both cameras if you cannot decide (both cost ~$500 USD).
5. XF10 turns on a little bit faster than GR II
6. GR II is better to quickly toggle on/off the flash
7. Both cameras are superb.

Yes indeed. I have the older Fuji X-20(not XF) and the GRII, love both. But the X-20 is heavier, on-off is by turning the lens,not a switch as the GRII. But actually i like analogue photography more.. But of course you can't see the photo's immediately. And development is "expensive" ; black and white is more expensive to develop than color, strange but true.

Your reviews on this camera helped convince me to purchase it. During the few weeks I've had it, I've come to love it. I hike every day with my dogs and soemtimes my X-T2 got to be too much to lug around. This camera fits perfectly in my jacket pocket or my small cross-body bag. I grab it now whenever I go out and I've taken some amazing shots with it that compare to anything from my X-T2. Thank you for your reviews. They've been very helpful to me.

Good, practical review. I still love my Fuji x70 - working around slower autofocus is a creative constraint that forces you to find ways to get the results you want without using technology as too much of a crutch.

For street I’m using a Leica D-Lux 5. Excellent camera. I’m looking to get the GR II to add to my stable. The GR II is a legend in the street community for good reason. The XF10 has an excellent menu system with outstanding build and image quality. If you have an opportunity to shoot with both cameras then the decision comes down to personal preference.

Hi Eric just a my first real go with the camera and the SR+ worked well. The results are not always perfect but fine for street images. Street is not fine art photography but to record events as they happen without being burdened with loads of gear. Thanks very much. Mike

Eric you make interesting points and I’ve gone with the XF10 being the latest realise. So far so good but the SR+ mode does make it easy for street. The colours are very good and the snap focus seems to work. Only shot about 60 frames but one of the images was taken up by Flickr in explore group. Street and auto settings work well being such an instant art so if you miss a few pictures so be it. Thanks for you video. Mike

My biggest issue with the XF10 is still that there is no built in lens protection so when you go to pull it out of a pocket you still need to fumble with a lens cap. With the GR I just pull it out of the pocket and power it up in one motion. Super quick.

I wonder how much slower from the Xt-1. If it's the same I can definitely live with it, I don't want to pull the trigger if the x70 upgrade will be out this year, if not, I'm buying the x70 on eBay.

Good comparison. I used the GR II for about 4 months earlier this year, but finally sold it. My main complaint is that the exposure compensation rocker switch is right where my thumb goes and I was forever being surprised by greatly under exposed pics (as much as 4 stops). I also found in certain light I simply could not see anything on the viewing screen. I don't know if theX-F10 is any better in this regard, but I am going to give it a try. At least the exposure compensation switch won't be a problem (they seem to have fixed it on the GR II, but $900 is too much). Maybe a better second camera would be the X70 with tilting screen.

#1) GR II AF sucks because it has only 9 points of Contrast Detect AF, but most Ricoh Mafia members don't care because they love "snap focus" (the automation of hyperfocal pre-focus which you can of course do with the manual focus of any camera) #2) AF on XF-10 should be orders of magnitude more accurate and FASTER because it has 91 points of on-sensor Phase Detect AF (if you don't know the difference between the two, google that). And if that isn't enough to sway you, don't forget 3.9" close focus without having to manually engage "macro mode", 24mp instead of 16mp, and being 3 years newer and from a company leveraging its extensive R&D in mirrorless innovation.
@therealsergio
@therealsergio 5 жыл бұрын
For the record, there should be NO COMPARISON between the AF of GR II (9 points of contrast detect AF) and XF-10 (91 points of phase detect AF). If Eric isn't seeing (or acknowledging) the difference, then I have to believe he doesn't really know how to configure and use Fuji AF, which is not such an unreasonable conclusion from someone with a career of mostly using snap focus and Leicas. Look at all the sports cameras with industry leading AF. They DON"T USE contrast detect. They use phase detect AF.
@jonmatle

I've never seen another camera that could shoot at a specific focal distance without changing the dials or menus if you're shooting in an AF mode, or at least I've never learned how. How do you do it?
@therealsergio
@therealsergio 5 жыл бұрын
@@jonmatle The technique which predates the GR II snap focus innovation, is to put camera in manual mode, set aperture to f/8 or f/11 (f/16 if you don't mind diffraction), the shutter speed to whatever freezes motion for your circumstances (I use 1/640th), these days set the ISO to auto, pre-focus to a specific distance (looked up once on the hyperfocal table for the lens and for the aperture, google "dofmaster") and that's it. You can shoot all afternoon that way, just point the camera in any direction, and if you have set up everything just right, you might have everything between 1m and infinity in acceptable focus. I love doing this and have done so on 3 different systems now. What I love is taking focus accuracy and lag out of the equation entirely. The camera becomes a light box that instantly "snaps" anything in its field of view with amazing depth of field. On FF a 28mm and wider lens is recommended, and on APS-C, an 18mm and wider lens is recommended, so that the depths of field start at 1m for reasonable apertures.

For a 5+ years old sensor on GRii (yes, its sensor was carry from GR, which is released somewhere 2013), its autofocusing capability is not too bad, especially consider it is not a high end model like Sony RX1Rii, which using A7Rii's sensor. I found out sometimes the autofocus was done while I composing, so, I consider it is not a big deal.
@jonmatle
@jonmatle 5 жыл бұрын
@@therealsergio Oh, but that's not what snap focus does. That's just setting manual settings for street. I have both the Ricoh and the Fuji X70 so I don't think I'm overly biased. You can change between modes on the Fuji to accomplish the same thing (the CAM switch on the front), but you can't accomplish the same thing without changing focus modes on anything other than the Ricoh that I've found.

Mac Jim the feature we love the most about the GR II is Snap Focus, which is similar to zone focusing on a manual focus lens. You can set the autofocus to a specific focus distance (1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m, 5m or infinity) and the camera will tell you how deep your depth of field is depending on the aperture you select. Fujifilm added a similar feature to the XF10 called Snapshot: you can choose between 1m and f/8 or 5m and f/5.6.

The SR mode on the xf10 sucks like other Ai modes on all other camera's. The focus hunts and you have no control on everything. A and M mode. The only 2 I use on all my camera's. Further the xf10 is great!

The "P" mode can be acceptable in certain situations; I agree SR+ mode has not done much for me other than teach me that I needed to learn everything else. I'm glad I learned my way around the camera too, because yo can change things VERY fast using the touch screen and all. Snapshot mode is good because one swipes gets you there instantly. I like having a max ISO setting and MIN shutter speed all ready to go.
