Agri in 2010 for sure was bad but one day the East of Turkey will hopefully develop. As soon as terrorism there ends and the regions that border it (Iran, Iraq etc) get better it will start growing. People there deserve to live better lives because I have seen what poverty is and nobody deserves it.

2:55 This is correct, but the reason why it's mandatory, is because there are too few doctors, police officers, teachers etc. in those regions there. Even the people there are often moving permanently towards West Turkey. Btw, I love how you say and keep saying Ağrı.

I am not surprised at all when you said you couldn't live in Agri. Most people from Izmir (or generally anywhere from the west of Ankara) would have similar experience as you if they moved to Agri.

As someone who has family roots in Agri, I found this video very factual, entertaining and hillerious :)

Gossiping and the hospitality reminds me villages in Sicily(Italy)

If you want to experience the historical and religious side of Islam & Ottoman Empire's past as well as the architecture, going to Bursa and Istanbul is a much better idea! There isn't much in Izmir and Ağrı is a complete opposite as you've experience.

I can totally relate to that (especially the part about how much people gossip here) since moving to Sivas after spending some time in Istanbul. Even my Turkish friends questioned my move.

Your experience in Agri is much different from the modern bubble most of us live in big cities. But what you saw is the real life in for the majority of people around the world. How did you feel when you saw children with rotten teeth? How did you feel when you saw poverty without any hope of a better standard of life? Did you not feel to help in any way? Were you not angry with the world that has the means to help? I would guess that Izmir also has poor areas with children having rotten teeth. But usually foreigners don’t go there, and locals that have are middle economic class. You were lucky to have that experience, I would love to go to Agri and help people. I am not a dentist to help the children for free. I am a computer programmer and can help children understand programming, Microsoft excel, etc. I can also help them learn English as English is an international language. And I will gladly learn the Turkish language. I love Turkish people and culture.

I experienced some of those things and it is very interesting and funny to hear with your expressions.

You will go there or you can resign" 6:30 Actually it is not about being a foreigner. It is a common thing out of metropol cities all around the city to wellcome a person and meet with that person. It is a really good thing actually, you get to know everybody in a short time.

Dear Chelsea, By chance I found your videos on you tube. My name is Berat I'm 59 years old and I was born in Dayton Ohio. By the way I'm female. My mom and dad are originally Turkish. So I have duo citizenship. Like you I'm very acquianted with both countries. I married a Turk when I was 20 years old. I have 3 children and a grandson. God did I enjoy your story about Agri. Nothing you mentioned is wrong all the facts are correct because I've done extensive tours to the region of Turkey. I salute you for your courage. What an experice. If you survive these places you can travel to almost anywhere an earth. Now you have a very vivid insight of under developed places. Use your experinces in a usefull way. Now you have seen a corner of a different world. When you live all your life in the States you get the impression that the whole world is like that,but unfortunetly, like Agri there are some many places that are deprived from modern life. The hospitals in regions like this are just like you describe. One doctor takes care aruond 50-60 patience a day. I wish the mother didn't insist to move with the children to Agri. It was a risk. You getting sick constantly openned the way for you and the children to move back to Izmir. You constantly got sick because the food water everything was foreign to you.I'm going to follow you and hope to keep incontact with you😄

I LOVE THIS! In 2005 I visited Mardin, Sanliurfa, etc... took a 2 hour taxi ride to Diyarbakir!!! THERE WAS AN AMERICAN IN THE TAXI... we were stopped by police every few miles! No problem, just curiosity... We stopped to visit nomadic Kurds, friends of the driver... I HAD TEA with them! THEN, a 22 hour bus ride back to Izmir! Long story (and a good one!), but a wonderful ride! I love Turkey!

Funny story ! You know actually Agri means 'Pain' in Turkish :) My mother is a doctor too. She served in Diyarbakir for 2 years. Tense times. I hope you will remember your experience in Agri when you go back to US. These people (all the government officials, doctors, teachers, etc) serving in the east, risk out their lives to serve an underdeveloped part of the country, to help people in need. Terrorists specifically target them, because they feed off of this regions poverty. They are not 'freedom fighters'.
