In this video we'll compare, side by side, two amazing reissues of sports watches from the 1970s. It's no secret that one of the biggest trends in recent years from the entry level to super high end, has been Gerald Genta inspired watches with integrated bracelets and retro futurist aesthetics, kicked off by the Genta designed Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in 1972. So, today I review what is unquestionably the most successful watch in this style-the Tissot PRX Powermatic (35 mm)-against my personal favorite-the Nivada Grenchen F77 (37mm)-in order to fully analyze the positives, negatives, design evolution, and historical context. Join me for a comparative review of two similar but vastly different watches, and find out why in my opinion, in this David and Goliath juxtaposition, one is the better, Swiss made, affordable alternative. What do you think of the watches featured in this video? And what's your favorite watch from this genre? Please share in the comments.

I must say while I broadly agree with your views on the PRX Powermatic range you have to consider that the PRX line was reintroduced to appeal to the masses - not just us watch geeks - and Tissot have achieved something quite remarkable in doing so - undoubtedly it has pretty well single handedly put Tissot back on the map in retail watch sales and appeals the the Apple Watch crowd as an analogue / retro cool fashion item while still holding enough appeal to watch nerds - and this can only be a good thing - a stroke of genius really - the PRX line oozes with style and truly is a work of design in practice - the 35mm has perfect wearing dimensions for both men and women - it’s the only watch I’ve ever owned which received compliments (not that it matters but still) - I do miss that watch and if I were to buy one again it would be the 35mm quartz version - it’s not too serious in terms of cost and delivers a great deal of satisfaction esp at the price point

Got the 35mm quartz mid-blue dial last month. It is an excellent watch for the money, fits perfectly on my 16cm wrist and stands out as something rather unique in this sector of the market. This model is just what Tissot needed as so many of their offerings are no doubt solid and worthy but rather vanilla in terms of design. Yes, some corners have been cut but then Tissot have had to take care with pricing of the PRX to gain that mass appeal. ~£300-400 is just about OK for quartz but much beyond that and they would no doubt lose a chunk of sales to non-enthusiasts who are not used to spending £100s on a watch. It's great at what it does for not a lot of money and in many ways makes more sense as a quartz than an automatic.

Very well said. I have to agree that out of all my watches, some of which are 10x the cost of a PRX, the ONLY watch I ever get compliments on is when I wear a PRX. I have both automatic and quartz versions of the PRX. The quartz is the all white dial which is also a full lume dial, something competitors in this price range do not offer and never could. And with the ease and availability to change straps to different colors, in both leather or rubber, this is a perfect gateway for a person who wears an Apple Watch to enter into our lovely passion and community.

I bought them as gifts for some members in my family who aren't into watches. Saphire crystal front and back textured dial, mechanical and swiss. It packs an incredible punch for its price point. When buying multiple or for the average buyer this comes into play. Admittedly I didn't like wearing at first but it's growing on me the more I wear it. It's a step back from most of my watches and I've noticed NO ONE has commented on what a nice watch it is which happens regularly with my other watches. The saphire crystal doesnt seem to pop like a domed saphire crystal does 😢 also it is a textured dial but because of what I stated before it doesn't really do it justice.

It's no secret that if you have a watch serviced that sports a 4R35/NH35 it's cheaper to replace the movement than to disassemble and clean it. By modularizing movement components and automating regulation the Swatch Group may be able to cut down the cost of servicing and replace modules instead of sending whole movements to a landfill. There are upsides and downsides to everything.

If you buy a Tissot Gentleman (non-quartz) you'll get a nicer version of the Powermatic 80 that has a proper escapement -- look for 25 jewels instead of 23 (the extra 2 are the pallet fork jewels). You can certainly maintain the movement _until_ you need parts, at which point you're a bit stuffed. Long-term, you're much better off with a Sellita, and actually if you don't want to send your Powermatic 80 driven watch to its maker for "service" (movement replacement) you can just swap in an SW200-1. You'll lose some power reserve, but gain peace of mind knowing your watch is properly maintainable.

If you don't mind the cost, and don't mind the movement being swapped out, then you can certainly send it to Tissot. That’s it for the compliments! I noticed that you tend to wear your watches quite low, on your wrist bone if not lower, so very close to your hand. Is that just an impression? I would have assumed that you would be more traditional and wear your watch above the wrist bone which I find much more practical as the watch doesn’t get in the way of any movements. I also believe (and that’s just me) that wearing the watch so low is a bit of a styling mistake.

Great video! Last year I purchased a Tissot PRX Quartz. As a 1973 model myself, I seem to have an affinity for 70s styling. I bought the Quartz partially as an homage to 70s quartz watches and partially (I'll freely admit) for the pricepoint as this was my first Tissot. I got the PRX with the blue sunburst dial (not the waffle). At first I loved it but after wearing for a year, I'm kind of ambivalent about it. It now sits in my dresser most of the time. Not sure if I'm going to sell it, but now I wish I bought the mint green dial with a black leather strap. Seeing that Nivada though.....I probably should've saved my money. My recent Tissot experience left a lot to be desired. I got the Le Locle open heart version of the powermatic 80 and within a week it went haywire on its time keeping. Now honestly don’t know what happened and don’t suspect it was anywhere near magnetic fields or anything. I have so many other watches and nothing like that ever happened. I am good at regulating watches myself, but this one I didn’t attempt ( at that time didn’t know you can’t), so sent it back within the return window for a refund. Guess I will never go Tissot way anytime soon or even later. Thanks to TGV’s review of Fortis, got a B42 and it’s such a wonderful beast of a watch!

I’d be interested to see how this compares with relative cheap Japanese movements in quality and longevity I do understand though the market forces driving Tissot and Swatch group, and they are offering alternatives to the Apple Watch drones, so maybe it’s worth it? But it’s be a shame to lose the craftsmanship of watch making in lieu of a cold soulless automaticon 😢

After holding both versions & not feeling they were for me, I purchased a Casio Tiffany EFR-S108D-2BVUEF for just £99. RRP was £119 but I had £20 discount voucher. It comes with a sapphire crystal & honestly, the bracelet feels just as good quality, if not better. OK, so I didn't get the waffle dial I lusted for, but I feel very satisfied with the outcome. The only sidenote to a great video is I can find a PRX all over the UK. I have no idea where I could get my mitts on the F77 pre-purchase.

I am tempted by the new Lapis Lazuli and even the titanium meteorite models, but have not gotten to try one on in person. The PRX is a nice looking watch (especially that light blue), but ultimately I find the 40mm feels too big on my 7-inch wrist and the 35mm is too small. I've been contemplating the Christopher Wars Twelve as well, which wears very comfortably on my wrist with its 40mm size, unlike the PRX. The new F77 releases just made my choice more difficult, but your video is helping me figure out what I want.

Great video. I bought the Ice Blue Tissot PRX. Sold it after 1 month. Uncomfortable, sharp edged bracelet. Dial became boring after a short while. After learning more about the watch, didn't care for all the plastic parts in the Powermatic movement. To each his own I guess. NG much nicer IMO.

Not all Powermatic 80s have plastic parts and it's believed that it comes down to the different grades of movement. Like other ETA 2824-based movements there's different grades, and with Tissot it's believed that the Silicium and Chronometer grade Powermatic 80s do not contain plastic parts.

A thoughtful and worthwhile review. That said, it doesn't entirely escape from the general whiff of "I'm too good for this mainstream thing" wankiness that plagues most negative reviews of the PRX (or any popular watch). It's hard to decide what's worse: the hype, or the inevitable army of dudes in fitted sweaters claiming to be above it all.

The PRX has a VERY strict design language with extremely distinctive firm lines forming flat surfaces everywhere whilst the F77's design language isn't nearly as restrained and distinctive, it's softer and rounded, often in unexpected places like the bracelet edges or the curve in the Box Sapphire Crystal but it's the bezel where it really stands out. Ultimately for me I prefer the PRX design language and for me the Midnight Blue and Tapisserie pattern is more attractive than the F77's colour and dial pattern. That said maybe it's not the best comp, the F77 seems closer to the CW 12 than the PRX in terms of design and market placement.

A surprisingly one-sided review, I'd say. Not really suitable comparisons, both regarding looks and price. I don't understand much of the flack you're giving the PRX compared to the NG, like saying they should have ditched the display case-back because it would be 0.5 mm thinner, when the NG is almost 2 mm thicker without one, and you used to praise Seiko 5's for their display case-backs even though it was much more of a basic movement. And that most of the thickness of the PRX is on top of the watchcase, making it look top-heavy, but all of the thickness of the NG is below the watchcase, making it float on wrist with huge gaps and causing the bracelet to angle down abruptly. The PRX has a much more dressy bracelet too, while the NG has a dive-style bracelet with a huge clasp which is kind of disproportionate to how much the bracelet tapers. And you give so much flack to the PRX for having a disposable movement when the same could be said for most of Seiko's watches, the ability to regulate them yourself aside, as the 4R35 is cheaper to replace than to service (which doesn't dampen your praise of them), and as if it's easy to get the NG serviced most places. I don't have anything against either the PRX or the NG, but the comparison seems "artificial" to me, because they don't look or wear similar, and there's a massive price difference. It's like comparing a Speedmaster to a Daytona and roasting the Speedmaster because it's so unrefined next to the Daytona. You've made videos on both watches before as well, and several on the NG, as well as expressed your disdain for the PRX on multiple occasions, so this video seems a bit redundant and the comparison unjustified, kind of like the NG hasn't paid for itself yet and has to get another video in before it's sold off. Usually you seem quite unbiased, but this one was an unusually decisive miss, in my humble opinion. In any case, all the best, and am looking forward to the next one!

The NG also looks way too much like a cheap Royal Oak ripoff. The PRX clearly has RO influences with the textured dial and brushed bracelet links but it still stands as its own design. The NG looks like an AliExpress replica of an AP RO. Hard pass for me.

Great video TGV - agree with some criticisms of the PRX (quick release springbars on an integrated bracelet is very strange) and the NG is clearly a level up, but I feel you're being a tad harsh on the Powermatic 80. So much movements these days hardly ever see a watchmaker's eye. I'd almost guarantee that the 6R35 in your new Seiko was made completely by machine and came unregulated. And yes, I'm reliant on Tissot for an inevitable service, but their service costs are the cheapest in the business and they're 100% transparent when it comes to costs which I love. My €700 Gentleman has an upgraded Powermatic 80 movement (with no plastic parts), is running +1 second a day and I know that in around 7-8 years time when it comes to service it, its going to cost me around half the price of a Seiko service and with an augmented service guarantee from it.

I have a certina ds action diver with the PM 80.611 (25 jewel version) and I was down at my AD last week and asked about its serviceability. It's a fair video TGV, the NG F77 is a fine watch that punches well above its price point. As you mention the PRX is a great watch as well but has some foibles that put you off including the PM80 movement but It's worth checking the Tissot service prices for complete movement maintenance. It might be lower than you might expect and you may be surprised at what you get included. You my find that you get a 2 year guaranty on the movement as well. If I had the cash available I would also go for the F77 with the box crystal, and better bracelet and the dial. Now comparing the F77 with the CW 12 it could be a different story but I've not tried either.

I think they're priced quite fairly, including the titanium versions. I'm a big fan of that SW300-1 movement CW chose for the titanium version. I have a PRX 40mm in quartz (black dial) and it's really a nice watch (especially for what I paid in the last black friday sale), but if I wanted a nicer integrated bracelet watch I'd skip right past the PRX automatics (with trash movements) and get a CW the12 (in titanium, with a nice movement). Not that the SW200-1 is bad at all -- I'd still take that over any Powermatic 80. Speaking of integrated bracelet watches like this, there's a Chinese-made watch I've got my eye on: the IX&DAO "Engineer" ( 😆yeah, I know ). They had offered it without half links when it definitely needed them, but I might just pick one up in the next sale (_with_ half links).

For me, the PRX Quartz is the only way to go. $250-$300 USD. You get the “beater” look and feel (love the white on white for summer), without the expense of a “throw away” automatic. You can still get it wet, and if it ever does quit working, just pop in another quartz movement. Again, I think of the PRX line as a weekend beater watch. Omega, Longines, Tudor, and even Seiko for something more substantial or day to day.

first video of yours ive seen and i totally disagree. not abt the prx abt the movements. i have 4 p80 watches with diff calibres. they all run great and eta can and does service the movements. its easier and faster to replace a movement than to service, for the customer. they send the old movement to be serviced and put a newly serviced one in your watch, comparing it to the sistem 51 is just wrong, atleast thats what someone who works in the industry told me. sorpod over eta? no way, not ever. i understand the hate watchmakers have against the p80 but these processes help to keep costs down like in every other industry. dont you think that a handmade car will cost more? in my collection there are bullet proof zombie apocolypse movements and i would never get a sorpod. my only issue with the p80 is i cant regulate it myself. but when i buy my certina from my local ad i get 5 year warranty and if my affordable ds+/ph200/action diver/himalaya will get stolen or damaged or whatever im not gonna cry abt it. a watch that served me perfectly for several years and was affordable. there are other things that should really upset us in the swatch group like the pisswatch or blancrap, but i wont tell that to someone who has it and to their face. btw i have several integrated bracelet watches but not a prx.
