Man, this show was incredible. With just eight seasons. Only eight seasons. Eight.

After 13 yrs of working in healthcare i can say with no doubt scrubs is the most accurate portrayal of being a nurse or doctor

Scrubs was the background noise when I lived alone with my depression. It was comforting and looking back, a meaningful coping mechanism.

I think the best part about JD is that despite most episodes being told from his pov, the show isn't afraid to show his bad traits as well. At several points in the show he's arrogant or an asshole. It's the opposite of Cox who is an asshole for most of the show, but will let his human side shine through when the situation calls for it. Having him be overly sensitive and feminine just helps set him apart from Cox and Turk

George Carlin once seperated his stand-up routine into several categories, a pretty significant one was that of 'The Little Things' - things that happen in everyday life and are immensely funny if you stop to think about or look at them from a different point of view. Scrubs is, basically, a master of the little things category of comedy in a hospital setting and it's why it feels as 'down-to-earth' as it does far moreso than most other comedies.

One of the most beautiful, real and heartbreaking shows ever to exist. That goddamn episode, "My Screw Up" hits home every time. A friend said it best. "Most shows are just TV about life. Scrubs is life on TV".

Zach Braff and Donald Faison and have a podcast called "Fake Doctors, Real Friends" where each week they watch an episode and provide commentary. They're on season 5 now. I've been rewatching and listening to the podcast right after; highly recommend.

I think scrubs is one of the best shows ever. It's kind of weird how you mention scrubs, good will hunting and breakfast club. Those are movies that mean a lot to me and you happen to thoughtfully dissect them. The fit of this channel to my taste is literally incredible (more so because I also write).

Scrubs taught me that my anger would only end up hurting the people I want to keep around and it's okay to cry. My Sesame Street will always be my favorite episode because I think it holds every good element of Scrubs without any of its flaws.

i remember watching scrubs when i was younger.. the dr cox brother episode made me actually sob and i remember the ending when they re all at the beach having fun and ted and his bad singing hey ya made me happy cry. i miss this show

Have to respectfully disagree that Scrubs was never tragic. Yes, it was a great comedy, but when it did go down the sad route it punched you hard in the gut. Dr. Cox's brother's death, Laverne's death, Dr. Cox's mental burnout/breakdown, JD struggling to accept that his terminally ill patient wanted to die... these were just a few of the moments that absolutely broke me. I think it was because, as you said, those were the parts that they always presented as real and everyday, happening to and involving real characters that we could all see ourselves in. I loved that Scrubs was one of the few comedies that could do that so damn well - have you rolling with laughter one moment, and then completely winded with sadness the next... and yet still leave you with a feeling of hope and/or catharsis at the end.

If you love scrubs, Coupling might also be your cup of tea. (obviously the original from Steaven Moffat, not the US-remake)

Scrubs is the most accurate medical show that I've ever seen. It delivers the human drama inside of a hospital, as all situations inside are heightened since the patients don't wind up there on their good days, and it delivers the laughs but never at the expense of the serious subject matter. The laughter, silliness, and antics are clearly a coping mechanism in much the same way as MASH. The doctors are quirky and joke around outside the OR but when they are inside it, they are about their work which is why both shows work so well.

The first time I watched Scrubs was the weekend I first considered suicide. I'm not gonna say that "Scrubs saved my life," but there was a comfort about it that helped me come down from the intense emotions I was feeling. Since then, Scrubs has always been my comfort show when life gets tough, and I haven't ever really been able to articulate why until hearing the way you described it. The way Scrubs based it's writing and comedy around ordinary struggles and showed both the way they can seem much more extraordinary when we're dealing with them and how we can figure out how to manage them helped to make me feel a lot less alone when I thought no one in my life cared. I've been rewatching Scrubs for the first time in a few years, and sadly, I've found that there's a LOT that hasn't aged well, especially in the later seasons. I'll let you form your own opinion on it if you decide to rewatch it, but despite that, I still found that same comfort I did when I first watched it. It may be more outdated than I once gave it credit for, but it's always going to hold that significance to me.

One thing that I think lends the drama weight in scrubs is how it doesn't manufacture its moments. A bad show will say "AND THEN SUDDENLY THE CHILD HAD CANCER AND ITS SAD" or something, meanwhile scrubs tends to have the source of the drama be the focus or develop over the course of the show, and then show the dramatic perspective on it. The episode with Michael J Fox guest starring is a great example, a really good doctor with OCD? Sure lets make jokes about it through the early parts of the show! And then it pivots and shows just how tragic and badly effected the poor guy is.

I liked Scrubs for the amount i had time to watch. I always thought of it as a lighter and comical version of E.R. (which i also really liked). I also find it interesting when Litote is used as a humour vehicle as opposed to the more common Hyperbole.

I've never watched this show, but I agree with your premise that comedy shows we love bring us great comfort. There's something so relaxing about watching an old show you once loved again. I'd love to watch Night Court again, but it isn't streaming anywhere. I get such joy every time I watch old episodes of Taxi, Golden Girls, or Cheers. Good stuff. :)

Classic late night show on swedish television when i was a teen.

My take away, or perhaps my understanding parts of this presentation that I already agree with, is that media can be more than just an escape. It's almost always the case that those in the business of entertainment are going to try to evoke emotional responses from the audience to keep us watching. That's not always a cynical assignment to maximize the network's advertising revenue, sometimes people create things of value.

Huh. I noticed a while back that I'm significantly more comfortable in my masculinity and my femininity than most cishet guys, but I was never sure why. I never went out of my way or made a choice to achieve it. I wonder if my obsession with this show around the years of my puberty had anything to do with it; if seeing JD be so confidently unrestricted by gender norms helped me.

It's the character dimension and their layers including flaws that make it so good. Yes, it's outrageous, but it's also kind, realistic, relationship arks - laugh, cry, feel warm. Love this show so good!!!

Scrubs feels like the show that is closest to real life for me. Life is a lot of tragedy we are constantly fighting but can't always control with comedy both intended and incidental finding it's way in. Life isn't drama nor is it comedy. It's a concoction that waxes and wanes between the two and Scrubs manages to encapsulate that duality nearly perfect.

Like Seinfeld Scrubs was wildly inventive. It was over the top without being campy. The laughs are never contrived. Scrubs gave us a look inside someone's psyche way before Inside Out. What we found was a genuine and sometimes conflicted soul. As we all are.

This show brought out a sarcastic side of myself I didn't know I had. It helped me thru a rough break up & psychological (maybe even complete) break-down. I learned to laugh. I loved the characters. I loved the stories. The only bad thing was/is that, throughout the years, I've taken my sarcasm too far & used it to cover up things. Now, i don't know how to act/be without it. At the time Scrubs came out, i was working in a nursing home. This show is so damned good.

I feel like, looking back at the show is even better than watching it for the first time. It made me so comfortable, I didn't realize how it made me feel at the time. Going back, and watching it again... I feel this nostalgia, of course, but the nostalgia makes me remember how it truly made me feel. It made me feel good, and it reminds me of times past. I may never have kids, but if I do, I will absolutely show them Scrubs

Oh, come on! I can't believe you did an entire video on Scrubs and the comfort in comedy, but didn't use the final wrap-up scene (I may have the name of the episode slightly off) from "My Life in 4 Cameras" where he perfectly explains why people love these kind of shows. lol But that being said, I couldn't agree more with everything you said. There may be some humor from time to time that may seem outdated, but I don't think it's ever intended to be malicious or meant to look down on certain people. Hell, it's thanks to Scrubs that I started being more affectionate, even to my guy friends. There are a few shows I turn to whenever I feel myself going through struggles that I can't seem to overcome like "That 70's Show" or "How I met Your Mother," but scrubs is by far my favorite go-to sitcom. There's something so comforting about the characters and what they go through that helps me deal with my problems as well. It's hard to admit that I've probably binged that show more than twice this year alone, but that's the kind of power this show has.

It is still my go to show whenever I go through life changes, currently taking care of my first child and late at night when keeping her comforted I watch scrubs. I love that show and there are so many moments in my life where I find myself saying 'that remind me of a scrubs episode'

This is the best doctor show. Doctors from whole world can relate to it. Things are different here and in different time but same in broad aspect. All the work abuse, patient abuse, seniors abuse are relatable minus the fun and sex

One good example that still sticks with me was that after being silly,JD asks Turk if he needs to grow up. And Turk tells him honestly,saying that although he likes doing fun stuff with JD,he's still a husband,father,and surgeon first. And then asks JD if he's even gone to see his son. That's a great bit of writing to me:showing that you can be silly with your friends,but you also have to be real with them also.

Thank you for this video! I generally really love these kind of video essays about things I love, but this one really puts a finger on some feelings towards the show I wasn't able to grasp for myself. This definitely changed the way I will feel about the show during my next rewatch (which will be soon). The fact that it just has so many 'real' people and characters in it makes it so grounded and unexpectedly relatable. Although the hospital setting is a very specific one with scenarios that will probably never happen to me, the underlying conflicts and character developements are based on each and every person. Therefore, no joke or dramatic twist feels forced and even though sometimes the story is pretty predictable, it almost always hits. Already in the fourth episode of season 1 ('my old lady'), the tone of the whole series is set in a relatively brutal way of telling us 'life isn't fair' and shows us never to be too sure about what to expect from an episode. I also really like the podcast by Zach Braff and Donald Faison, they talk about stuff like that a lot and why they think the show was such a hit. It's really great to hear that some of the points you made in that video or that I came up with for myself are mentioned in the podcast and explained regarding their intention during the production of the show. Most of it is spot-on and further explains why this show just works for a lot of people.

I remember when I found my brother's DVDs of the first two seasons when I was like 16. I stayed up all night watching the entire first season till it was time to get ready and go to school in the morning. And then that second night I stayed up the entire night again watching the second season till it was time to get ready and go to school in the morning. I was real loopy at school that day, but it was worth it, lol.

I didn’t like scrubs growing up. I just thought it was too silly but I’ve just watched the series (I’m at season 7 right now) I feel in love with it. There is a lot of heart to this show and the chemistry with this cast is so good.

I watched Scrubs when a friend kept referencing it. I had to watch it so I'd be in on the jokes too. Best decision! I started watching it on DVD at season 6 before going back to the beginning

Was very confused at sub count v watch count. Being a media review KZfaq does not look fun, seems veiws are dictated by the show or movie but I really appreciate this look back on a show I watched a lot of then never again, great to look back on rewatching episodes I've seen a hundred times.

what's interesting in regards to your example about how grounded the drama is, specifically the conflict Turk and Carla have regarding Carla taking Turks last name, also happened to be plotline b in probably the most dramatic episode of Scrubs ever.

This was a great show, and I wish they would release a full boxset of the entire seaons already.

IIRC the show dealt with the sexual between JD and Elliot in the first episode "did that, never again", which gave the writers so much room going forward (it became a creative obstacle in Moonlighting f'rex}

Hello, I don't know if you've ever wanted to watch a kdrama but I think you'd really like Hospital playlist and/or prison playbook. They're both made by the same people and unlike most other Korean dramas they are not overly dramatic but more light-hearted, heart-warming stories of friendship (especially HP). You can watch them both with English subs and if you don't like them you don't have to watch just a recommendation :))

Turk and Carla are my favorite TV couple.

There's a shitty rumor floating around about a ninth season of Scrubs. Don't believe it. It's a horrible lie.

So I watched the show not to long ago, and I loved it, for all the reasons presented in the video and the goofiness is just exactly my humour. But coincidentally I heard that the last season was crap. And the ending of the second to last season was so fulfilling and it felt like an worthy end. Still, should I watch the last season?

I really like Scrubs but after the last time I watched it through I noticed I'd enjoy the show more without many of the outdated jokes.

As for "outdated humor", they did pull one episode from reruns RECENTLY because of "racial insensitivity". I don't know which episode/joke that was about.

I love that Scrubs would be considered politically incorrect by today's self-righteous puritanical standards. Shows before 2010 were so much funnier.
