In this video I talk about the reasons why I choose to get a 7mm PRC. I talk about the future plans on testing the 7mm PRC. I plan to shoot the factory ammo, handload for it and compare it to the 7mm Rem mag. Hope you enjoy the video!

Most people do not realize when you go to a magnum sized cartridge a 26-inch barrel is a minimum for getting decent velocity. Even a 308 will do better with a 24-inch barrel even though most of them sell in a 22-inch barrel. There is a reason to have a barrel that will get more out of the cartridge. I hate it when gun manufacturers keep making these ridiculously short barrels for cartridges that have so much powder that does not get burned in the process of firing. If you need a short barrel size down on the cartridge. Good post! Your wife did well in her purchase with the right length barrel to get the best results with the cartridge.

Congrats! It’s always great fun to try new cartridges and rifles! In the beginning, I spaced out my calibers and cartridges, strategically, for different game classes. Then, I started filling in between. Lol! I’m very grateful and fortunate to have had many of the most popular calibers and cartridges from .243 to .500. Well over 20+ different calibers/cartridges over a lifetime. The newest cartridge developments are quite interesting. Enjoy!

7 PRC vs everything! I am extremely excited for these videos coming up. I am in the research phase of buying a long distance rifle. 7PRC seems to be the sweet spot, it just doesn’t have the following or availability of 6.5 PRC. I’ve been slightly leaning towards 6.5 PRC based on reloading componentsand availability. I’m excited to see you shed some real light on the matter 7PRC.
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 5 ай бұрын
I have both of the PRCs you listed. The 7mm PRC certainly outshines the 6.5 in performance for flat shooting and downrange with less drift and bullet drop. Components are available better early on the 7mm PRC than they first were with the 6.5 PRC. and availability will only get better. They are both a bit pricey with ammo. If you reload the 7mm PRC will most likely be the better of the two in the long haul. If you are a factory ammo purchaser 6.5 PRC is more readily available and less expensive but much of this has to do with people buying into the 7mm PRC with supply and demand. I hope you see where this is going. The 6.5 PRC rifles are as a whole a bit less expensive because of the same thing supply and demand. The 7mm is a superior cartridge for long range shooting as well as more versatile for large game such as Elk or Moose. But if you don't need any more than a 6.5 PRC for your personal use, why not? If I had the choice to make myself of choosing between the two of them 7mm PRC gets my vote. But I don't have to choose I have both.

@@garrytalley8009 I appreciate your insight. I’m going to purchase a Bergara HMR Wilderness and leaning towards 7mm PRC for some reason, call it a gut feeling. I’d eventually like to hunt elk with it, and don’t want to have any doubt of having enough stopping energy. Getting a barreled action and a lighter stock/chassis in 6.5 PRC will probably happen as well to be a little more fun long range days. I’ve got the capability to reload, so that will be a good time. 7 PRC is getting easier to source components.

I like the cartridge but Hornady bullets leaves some to be desired (my opinion). I prefer Barnes for monolithic and Sierra/Berger/Nosler/Norma for bonded and jacketed. I am contemplating getting a 7 PRC once they are available in South Africa and I am considering a lightweight build with a 22 inch barrel and a suppressor. I do acknowledge that other people might differ with my reasoning but I'm looking for a 7mm (non belted) that shoots a 168/175gr Barnes at 2700-2800 fps (handloads so don't need more velocity for meat damage but should be able to hit at least 2700 minimum) and is short and very packable. As bullets lose about 100 fps per 50m and the Barnes require 2100fps for expansion. That would allow me 350m of hunting distance and I don't want to hunt any longer distance than that. The 7PRC I believe gives added versatility as it can be stretched out to distance for some long range shooting on the weekends (where I can load some Bergers/Noslers 175gr/185gr etc at 3000fps), however the 22" barrel will be a bit of a disadvantage. Please feel free to voice your opinion on my reasoning and I look forward to the test results. Regards

@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 5 ай бұрын
7mm Rem Mag with more twist made to shoot heavy high BC bullets is not necessarily better. The belt in the case is not needed. In fact, it is a weak spot if reloading multiple times. It has a tendency to split. The case stretches more because of the 30-degree shoulder. It has less case capacity. And people may tell you that their 7mm Rem Mags shoot faster if one is reloading and tweaking a load the 7mm PRC will beat it hands down if you are using a rifle with equal barrel length of the same manufacturer. 7mm Rem Mag is certainly a rifle to get to hunt with if you want readily available hunting ammo and buy factory loads especially being less expensive and more variety. But honestly the 7mm PRC is going to beat it with hand loads if someone knows what they are doing. Choice depends on whether you will buy ammo and need availability to purchase factory ammo or you want the best possible performer and want to pursue making hand loads for it. BTW the PRC may not have a lot of reload data yet but can't be too far from 7mm PRC when using 7mm Rem Mag data. It will be safe to work up from there because the case capacity is less than the 7mm PRC. On the positive note on a 7mm Rem Mag they have been here a long time and will always be here.

@@ReloadingWeatherby to me it's more about the efficiency and factory 1:8 twist that makes me want to get one. Don't have a 7mm and want one - originally wanted to get a .28 Nosler or .280 AI (rebarreled from a .30-06) but the 7 PRC does what I want out of that class of rifle without needing to go custom, while having less recoil and much better barrel life than the .28 Nos.

I am doing something very similar, I have a 7mm prc on order. Getting a bergara b14 wilderness hunter to test. I have done alot with 30 caliber, 6mm and 6.5mm. Just made the switch, got rid of my last 30 caliber rifle. Currently shooting, 22-250, 6br, 6arc, 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5 prc, 280ai and now 7 prc. Took all my deer with 6.5 creedmoor this year just to see and I am impressed all three deer single shot, furthest one got was 20 yards after the shot. Going to compare 280ai vs 7prc, I have always stayed away from 7 rem mag due to the slow twist rates of factory barrels. The goal of my 7prc is long range ELR shooting. 1000 yard’s plus, hopefully upwards of 2500 yards. Eventually putting it in a chassis if I am happy with it. Also hope to get a moose, elk and black bear with the 7 prc to see how it performs. See if it lives upto the hype or if it fails. I love the 280ai, so it’s an uphill battle for the 7prc as I am a self admitted 280ai fanboy. My 280ai has a 1:8.5 twist barrel so I can utilize heavy bullets.

I really like the 7prc . From my point of view , a novice hunter. The out of the box accuracy of their ammo. 4RNDS IN .54MOA @100YARDS out of a $415 mossberg with and even cheaper optic is pretty good . However this is only my opinion. I have some shoulder injuries that make heavy recoiling calibers a very real pain to shoot. My personal experience when taking a Roosevelt elk with it at a close distance of roughly 200 yards ...it was lights... out .I mean the bull barely twitched. So in many camps faster is better. But I seem to think that even if you launch a bullet at super high speeds , if you can't retain that energy at the target or animal what's the point? Why suffer the recoil if all you may need to do is get a bullet that has a higher BC to get the same effect down range. Am I wrong here? Am I wrong here? Kinda makes sense 🤔 to me. Thoughts?

Same here., I got a Mossberg Patriot Predator with cerakote ($100 more and well worth it.) Put it in an Oryx chassis. Put on a Vortex Venom, which costs less than the rifle. Got it zeroed. Let it cool for a month or so. 3 shot group from cold bore, just as if I was hunting, which is my primary activity. .57 inches. This will be my overall hunting rifle. From feral hog (I have seen it done with it but I would probably use my AR-10 in 308,) to moose. I have seen a guy take a moose with a 6.5 CM. So , I know the 7 PRC will do it. Even if the muzzle velocity is a smidge below the box value of 3k fps, it still has impact velocity of over 2k fps at 750 yards, which is plenty far for a hunt. More than likely, I am not shooting anything past 500 yards and right now, my comfort zone is 300 yards. Adam at Who Tee Who has tried a few 7 PRCs and mentioned that he would stick with his 7 RM for hunting. At the time, availability of ammo was a thing. And the number of bullet styles and weights are more for 7 PRC. In his drop chart, all the normal hunting rounds from .243 to .300 WM are within an inch or so of each other. The 7 PRC is the flattest past 500 yards. It is also the flattest under 500 yards. So, this would need to be my long range target rifle. It has the gas to get there. Though I understand people going for the 2 mile mark are probably going up to .300 PRC. In my opinion, being in the same boat as you, my other rifles are .308 W in different configurations. This is my first 7 and my first long action magnum. If a guy such as us wants to get a 7, this would be a really good bet. Someone else has stated that if want a custom build with lots of flexibility and availability, get a 7 Rem Mag. If you want factory rifle and ammo that performs well, go 7 PRC. I also know that Hornady has all the 7 PRC info you need to reload. Now, I sit back and enjoy the great wailing and gnashing of teeth of the gucci purse swingers having a fit over me, an average guy, getting really good precision out of a budget rifle and scope. (Technically, getting the Oryx chassis takes it out of the budget idea.)

@@PNW-LOGGING-HOMESTEAD And I did not complete my full description. Yes, Oryx chassis but I should have changed up to the MDT LSS Gen 2 long action with folding stock adapter like I did with my Mossberg Patriot .308 W years ago. Anyway, so, the Oryx chassis butt pad has no give and Falcon Strike does not make a hydraulic pad for that. I even had a phone call with one of their engineers. So, the Limbsaver Airtech works just fine. And I have on there a Silencerco ASR brake. Together, it feels like a padded .308 W with a smidge more push back. I like managed recoil so that I can practice my technique. Getting hurt and bruised is just plain stupid. I tried a Limbsaver tuner (harmonic dampener) and it did not work for me. Mossberg's fluted barrel is stable, on its own.

I would appreciate your attention to and feedback on that issue. If I have to have a custom reamer or custom reloading dies to get more than 3 firings on my cases, the chief selling point of the prc line (custom rifle performance/attributesfrom factory rifles) is greatly diminished in my opinion.

Regarding how it shoots, take a look at James Eagleman's video for Barbour Creek Shooting. He compared the 3 PRCs and, I think, the 6.5CM to 1000 yards. On drop and drift, the 7PRC won. And, if I recall correctly, it raised an eyebrow for Mr. Eagleman I think

Great choice! The PRCs in general might be overhyped by some since they don't do much more the what was already there, like the 7mm Rem Mag... they just do it with a better case design and tolerences. Not a revolution but still a little bit better. I know you would have prefered to go with the 6.8 Western but the PRC won the contest lolll

I've only compared it to all the "fudd" cartridges on paper and only with factory ammo. Seeing it done irl is going to be very insightful. Please define "Long Range". On paper, this thing is good out to 2200yrds. How far can you reach out? I'm very interested in how it performs/compares at 1760ish because that's going to be my application for it. Currently that application is filled by the 300 Prc but the 7 claims to be faster, flatter, and more wind resistant. It's going to be a fun series for sure. 👍

This rifle is not hype. If one really reads all the specs on precision cartridges even the Creedmoor there really is no hype. They do exactly what they were designed for. They are designed for heavier than caliber bullets, easy to workloads for more precision shooting. They are not advertised to be the fastest bullet. The 7mm PRC is a good bullet, but it isn't designed as the fastest 7mm either is it? I know it isn't I have one. It is everything they said it is and if you get a real good one maybe even more.

Looking forward to the 7mm PRC content. I'm not an expert on Hornady factory ammo, but I had a box of American Gunner 6.5CM 140 gr BTHP with a box velocity of 2690 FPS. My 10 shot average on a 35F day from a 24" barreled Savage 10 was 2691 FPS. I also find that Hornady's load data has listed velocities that are more often correct than not. For example, when loading for 6.5 CM the Hornady listed velocities were never more that 50FPS different than what I measured, often 30 FPS or less difference, and once 0 FPS difference. With Nosler load data and bullets I was nearly 100 FPS faster than expected and with Sierra load data and bullets over 100 FPS faster. I was even using the same case and primer called for in the Sierra data.

Well I'm back from a 2 week hunting excursion. Here's a SMALL bit of data. As of commented before on your vids and Hopeful Ballistics, I've got 7PRCs: I took one on the hunt with me. It has ONE test shot through it from the gun builder. Then I put 4 more through it to get it on paper and zeroed. I used factory Hornady ELD-M 180s. I've NEVER killed any game with Hornady centerfire ammo or Hornady bullets that were handloaded for centerfire (only 44 cal XTPs in my 44 mag handgun and muzzleloader) I euthanized a deer on the second hunt with the 7PRC at 189 yards, slightly quartering to me. Entry hole was barely larger than caliber size. Exit hole was about the size of a quarter. The vitals appeared to be destroyed in the same manner as with any other bullet I've used including Berger VLDs, Barnes TSX, TTSX, LRX, Speer boat tails, Nosler btips, ABs, solid base, Federal factory blue box ammo, etc. You name it. Could not tell any difference in performance. The deer dropped at the shot I've seen a number of experienced hunter's videos who have time based experience with Hornady rifle ammo and in particular the ELD-M on game. In addition to this, a physician buddy of mine killed his big Colorado bull elk at 300 or so yards with ELD-M (225 gr)? from his 300 PRC. Therefore I was willing to give it a go. Worked perfectly. I"ve recovered 2 rifle bullets from deer in 40 years of hunting with a rifle. A Speer 150 grain 270 boat tail bullet from a big Missouri buck in 1998 at 130 yards perfect broadside lung shot - perfect mushroom, and a 130 grain Federal factory blue box ammo from a 270, big mule deer buck in CO at 18 yards, again perfect broadside, very flattened mushroomed bullet. Both bucks dropped and never flinched after hitting the ground Rifle: AG Composite stock, Hawkins DBM kit, 24 inch #5 contour Benchmark cut-rifled 8T barrel, Lone Peak Arms Left hand Razor Ti action, Trigger tech Diamond trigger set at 1 pound. I'll be taking this rifle to the range this weekend to see what it will do with Hornady ELD-X factory ammo, Federal ELD-X factory ammo, and also the ELD-M ammo. Never got a chance to check groups as I knew I wouldn't shoot over 250 yards and just getting it zeroed at 100 it would have printed less than 1/2 MOA if I were to overlap the targets. Once I see what it will do, I will then try handloads with 180 BVLDs over Retumbo and LRT. These 2 components with ADG brass produced one holers with my other 7PRC that has the 25" Brux barrel

BTW the 7mm PRC shoots flatter than the 300 PRC. with less wind drift. Many people just like 6.5 caliber and it does what it was designed to do as well. It is just pretty much a beefed up 6.5 Creedmoor not in dimensions but in velocity of being about 200 fps faster. I have both the 7mm PRC and the 6.5 PRC with zero intention of purchasing the 300 PRC. I do have a .300 Win Mag that shoots too good to justify purchasing another 30 caliber just to have one. @garrytalley8009 As a reloader... it really comes down to comparing cartridges based off of velocity. As a reloader I can get any cartridge to shoot extremely well. As far as twist rate at my elevation I'm shooting 165 ABLR in my 1in10 twist 270 Win. I'm also shooting the 135 gr Berger in my 257 Weatherby with a 1in10 twist. My friend has a 1in8 twist 7mm Rem mag that shoots the 180 gr ELD-M extremely well at 3000 FPS. I say the 7mm PRC and 6.5 PRC don't live up to the hype because the factory ammo doesn't get anywhere close to box velocity. Most 7mm PRC rifles are getting 2880 FPS with the 175 ELD-X factory ammo. So what in your opinion makes the better long range bullet? The heavier higher BC bullet, or the lighter lower BC bullet? Have you ever actually compared a higher BC heavy bullet like a 180 gr compared to a lighter lower BC bullet like a 160 gr. both fired from the same 7 mm gun at say 1000 yards? At what distance will the higher BC bullet become superior? What distance is maximum as for hunting with the cartridge? Write down your opinion before you try if you havent tried doing it. You will find that there is an ideal bullet weight for every cartridge. And even though that (on paper ) the higher BC appears to have an advantage, that isnt necessarily so. Velocity always rules, even over BC. At least to a point, beyond which it dosent matter anyway. but having both is better yet, which is why a 338 using a 300 gr @ 3000fps is a far different cartridge than a 7 mm @ 3000fps at the longer distances. But to attempt to improve a cartridge, any cartridge, simply by using a higher BC bullet, is actually a fools mission. BC to a large degree has become a marketing tool meant for the uninformed. In that regard it is simply BS, not BC. Im betting that your 7mm WBY. with a 160 class bullet will out perform the PRC with any bullet you use in it at the longer distances. If you want something better, get a 300 Norma and try 190s.

Overall tip to rim length is a magazine length issue, the real measurement with accuracy would be to get the rim to ojive subjective to the bullet jam.

7 PRC will need to get someone else to load ammo for it before I will purchae any gun or ammo. ELDX blows up like a hand grenade and none of my Sako rifles I currently own like the CX bullets for accuracy. Little help from Federal with some Accubond LR or Barnes LR TTSX would be nice to see.

Any ideas why we dont see 6.8W in a AR10? I would think with a 22' barrel you would have a rifle that has great hunting potential and enough power and capacity to fend off toothy critters. The 6.8W is essentially the 270wsm 2.0. Id so snatch one up ..even in 20" .

I'm getting 2910 avg vel from factory 175gr ELDX rounds and 2920 from factory 160 gr CX rounds. 80 degree day at 700 ft elevation. Data I've found seems to agree that Hornady publishes velocities about 100 ft/s faster than actually velocities-and those are supposed to be at seas level.... Total B.S. That aside, Hornady's dishonest advertising does not take away the actual positive attributes of the round.

Personally, I'm only interested in copper bullets for hunting, as lead is killing raptors like golden and bald eagles at an incredibly high rate. One grain of rice size piece of lead will kill an eagle. That's a very common loss of a lead bullet in hunting, imo. In Fairbanks, AK where I live, Hornadys are the only commonly available option. Strangely, they dont fit in my early 2000s Rem Model Seven 7mm-08 without significant pressure to close the bolt. Do you know why that is? Solution? Increase head spacing? It puts a mark on the middle of the bullet. Cheers!

If this was true, there would be no Raptors left in the world. Stop being scared by environmentalists. Is there a chance that a Raptor or Vulture can consume lead, sure.

I haven’t bothered looking into 7prc let alone any of the prc’s due to the insane hype which, news flash, pissed me off. Now that it has settled a bit, I’ve been looking into the PRC line up and am impressed with some of the numbers but still open to non prc, belted magnums if it suits my needs better \(;-;)/

Haha, what a turn around! Respect, glad you came around to the dark side. 7mm PRC is the only PRC cartridge worth buying. I absolutely love mine. .25-06 for the woods, 7mm PRC for the fields and long range target shooting. I like loading the 175gr hornady ELD-X with H-1000 and I found a good zone that drills tight groups around 2880fps out of a 26” Christensen.

For a factory rifle I would do a Bergara B14. Then you could have a new stock for it eventually by McMillan, and down the road have it bedded.

If the rifle manufacturers would just give us a 26" tube we'd get those velocities. I get that the 7prc is supposed to perform in shorter barrels but it clearly doesnt do it from all the chronograph videos ive seen.
