Snapped my humerus in two about 2 years ago now. The confidence comes back, be patient with yourself and keep the fire burning. Be religious about physical therapy, bring it home with you. And don’t be an idiot and prematurely skate and go breaking it in half a second time like I did, hah!

broke my elbow a year ago. did hurt for a whole year. same pain level as on the day after surgery (only 1-3/10 NRS but pretty consistently) for 12 months. I still feel it every day. but hey, people can live with that stuff. sure, it is no fun. but who cares. I live. I skate. with time, you'll find a way.

I went through this when I broke my ring finger. The FIRST time I got on my board in months I immediately hit a pebble and snapped it again. A few months later it was a torn miniscus in my right knee. That took a year. Im now 48 and skating again.

Hey Zack! Starting to get into some more DIY and wondering if you could make a video, short, or even reply/comment on some of your most useful tools or what you would recommend beginners who are just starting to get into DIY start with (I.e. a power drill, a hammer, a measuring tape, a finishing trowel, etc.) For instance, if we were to open your ideal "toolbox" when you were just starting out DIY stuff for both cement and wood, what would it include, and when and what for would you use each tool for? Thanks so much, man!! Love your videos!

You can do it man! You'll be fine. I had a drunk driver take me out and that put me off the board for a year. Skated more and better than ever after. More recently, I've had a health catastrophe that had me basically bed bound for a full year, couch bound for 6 months after that, and now I'm on month 5 of being able to at least putter around the garage a bit. Having been barely able to fend for myself for two years, watching your videos has been a big catharsis for me. Keep at it man, you'll be fine.

Try 14 years .. after knee surgery I was F…ed. I started skating about a month ago and it’s been the hardest thing I have ever done. I had to re learn skating almost. I can’t even drop in and I used to Ollie garbage cans and skate anything. Now I’m aiming low these days. Honestly I’m just happy to carve the bowl and ride transitions.. it seriously feels so good to just carve the bowls and do small Ollie’s over the hips. Nothing crazy. No kickflips or any flip for that matter lol. I will say it took time ,I couldn’t even roll in off a curb it was serious but I kept on and it’s all coming back now. I skated since 14 and now I’m 50 and feeling great. Skateboarding has saved my life again ! My mood has improved I feel physically better .

Oh man. Mad props to getting back on your board so soon. When I was 16 or so I was trying a kickflip to a 5-0 on a ledge and landed the kickflip, but my back food slipped off the ledge. I came down from probably a 3ft ledge or so right on top of my ankle (rolled ankle style), and snapped it right there. I was also playing competitive baseball at the time, and like you said, lost my confidence 100% and also prioritized baseball over skating. Now, 15 years later, I've picked up my board again, thanks to you, man. You taking it easy in the bowl is what I only wish my skating looked like! Keep riping, Zack, and glad you're healing up well. 🤟🛹

Hi Zack, Hope your doing well. I recently had a serious accident while skating. I managed to hurt my back and couldn't walk or move for 3 days. At first I thought it was just a mild case of lumbago, but after the MRI, it turned out that my intervertebral disc had slipped and was pressing against a nerve and was making me a little numb. I'm recovering and watching your videos all the time and just thinking how nice it would be to skate like you.

Dude... scary topic, in the same boat. At 38 realizing aging and skating is progressively harder each year. I rarely fall during trick grinding, but always slam on dumb shit fooling around. On top of increasing recovery times, the hardest part is the mental blocks created in the back of your mind by these events. Things start to feel foreign after awhile and it all plays on you. Yet, i still dream of tricks to try. Endless pain.

I am 49 and took up surfing. I started skating in '88 and quit in '96 or so.... I started missing those days but realize i'm getting a little old so i went looking into surfing. It's not as easy as it looks but we have the ballance which comes easy and that's a BIG help. I've been in the water only a few times but already surfing waves so it is a really awesome transition and it feels like the brother or sister of skateboarding. And it's FAR less painful ! But there's more fear that comes into play.

I fractured my elbow and then my collarbone on a different occasion. Both in the past 15months. Physical therapy is so important. A good or bad therapist is deal breaker. But also there is alot of work you have to do sometimes outside of your actual pt appointments. It's worth it. You could be fine without but may not get as much mobility and limit as if you utilized pt.

I tore my meniscus last February and then had knee surgery last May. I was able to feel good enough to skate again towards July. Honestly still struggling to get my knee to feel normal. I'm also 45 and have spent over a decade on a skateboard and snowboarding. You're lucky it's your hand because trust me when it's a knee, ankle, or any type of leg injury it's very hard to get the motion back. I'm not expecting my knee to feel normal again, it may take another 6 months. Trust me everyone this will happen if you reach your 40s and still skate. Good luck with your injury Zack Dowdy, I wish you the best! I almost thought you'd quit but I couldn't see you doing that. Look at it this way, you got injured, had surgery and are already back in a fraction of the time it's taken me and you've already come back. Imagine not being able to skate to your full capacity for a year, a couple months is nothing. Find a new hobby to fall back on when you can't skate because old age is an end point for a lot of us! You're still young, so cherish that.

I skateboarded for several years in my youth, then at 37 I tried again and the stamina/balance wasn't there. I jumped into inline skates at 47 and I'm having the time of my life just learning slalom/wizard skating flatground tricks. Highly recommended for us a bit old not to risk a serious injury and it is a very technical sport with high reward. It is such a good sport since is low impact and involves all your body, I'm getting super fit now, my legs beefed up in a way skateboard doesn't do (feels like wile coyote after taking the acme steroids). I would recommend that for skateboarders too cause strong legs really help you feel light and stable.

Seriously resonates so hard with me. I'm 26 been skating for 20 years and in my early teens I could take so much damage I was literally known to slam the hardest and walk away. Now that shit gives me nightmares thinking that anything like a broken bone or another tear in the ankle I could not take again. I love skating but sometimes its good to know when to chill and just love it for what it is. ps ill probably still skate until I cant walk

I've been injured skateboarding, but have stopped skating due to work-related injuries. I actually am excitedly going to start skating again though! I've gotten all the protective gear and everything again and I cannot wait. I'm going to be cautious though of my injuries and get back into it slowly, but this was so refreshing to watch. This did remind me of my 1st ever car accident though. I ended up flipping upside down into a ditch and totaled my dad's car. But I was so incredibly terrified to drive again, let alone even be driven around by others. You describing looking at your board and being reluctant to get back on it again was exactly how I felt too. This was motivating for me getting back into skating though, and I'm glad you were able to as well =^_^=

Was scheduled for surgery at end of Aug but got some nerve function back and surgery was cancelled. Disc still needs to heal and Dr gave me till Jan. im in a similar boat. fractured my ulna head (elbow) 2 weeks ago. i was going pretty fast in a bowl and hit a pebble. the direction i was going etc i dont know if there was anything i could have done to land better, but in the past i have been bad at falling. and this happened from catching the fall with my arm straight-ish. i think before i go back to skating im going to practice rolling into the grass and falling off the skateboard and rolling out of it. i need to practice that parkour shoulder roll thing. i dont want this injury to happen again. ive been out of work 2 weeks and now im back and the work load has piled up and im only able to get a quarter done i used to. plus only having one arm has sucked. plus i had already booked annual leave over christmas. just bought a trailer, got a towbar installed on my car, and finished rebuilding my dirtbike. so i have been waiting for that moment all year. longer really. so i better be healed by then, lol. im pretty sure i will be though. p.s - when skateparks have wood chips/ bark/ pebbles in them for decoration i get angry. especially now it has led to my current injury. i hope the council knows how many skaters they injure when they decorate skateparks with these things.

@@socks2441 I wish you a speedy recovery! There is never a good time to get injured. It will take some time for the fracture to fully heal and may require physio but you will be back to normal eventually. I've been told that full recovery may take a year. I do hate when skateparks are surrounded by wood chips (as in my local skatepark), they always end up on a surface and are super annoying and dangerous. Pebbles are the worst especially if they end up in the bowl!

Dude! Our lives are so similar (both born on July 29th…caught that at the end of your video part). I’m 46 now. But when I was in my 30s, I took a weird slam at White Fish, MT park and nearly twisted my left pinky off too. I did the exact same thing with straightening it out. I only got it stitched up and didn’t go to a tendon specialist…so my pinky doesn’t flatten or bend properly anymore. I’m just a minute in, so I don’t know where this goes. But I wish you all the best. I took 4 years off skating and got back into it last summer.

Been skateboarding again after 15+ year break, taking my son to the skatepark, it was going great. After 4/5 sessions, started vibing again and shredding transitions. Got a bit too adventurous, slammed pretty hard, felt different to slam that hard at 39yo. Couldn't really walk for a week, finally went to the hospital for an x-ray and my foot was broken, two metatarsals. First breakage of my life. That was 6 weeks ago, and just went back to the skatepark tonight and got back on the board. Took it easy, but think I need to keep taking it easy ha ha.

Just seeing this now. I feel for you, man! I used to skate when I was a kid. I guess I never progressed much beyond basic tricks and just some mini ramps and bowls because I was just too scared of a big slam. I stopped skateboarding as a young adult because I had other things on my mind. Then picked up skateboarding again when I was around 30 years old. As much as I sucked back then, I suck much more now. A bit after that I quit again, I still enjoyed it but falling from even the smallest heights on concrete or asphalt hurt much more at 30 than it did when I was young. Now I have all kinds of other responsibilities and so I quit. It wasn't a conscious decision, it just happened gradually. I started skating less and less, until I complete stopped. Now I must say, my body doesn't hurt but quitting hurts in a way as well.

I actually learned how to make working prop lightsabers. I got pretty good at it. Which is a fun outlet for me. Iam older so I think it's good to have other outlets. I hope your recovery is good.👍

I have a major TBI but still skate. I just found new ways to do it within my range of skating. Like I switched to downhill freeride skating as can do within my limits of what I can and can't do. I still am able to use my old setups, just instead I'm doing slides with gloves as lower to ground.

At 32 (March 5th, 2023) I broke 2 fingers on my dominant hand. Was a brutal break too that lacerated to the bones. Still hasn’t healed all the way. Probably due for arthritis in those fingers the rest of my life :) I started doing physical therapy on my hand right after the cast came off which was about 2 weeks. Keeping the fingers immobile can do more damage than getting it moving. I also happened to get mine on film but I watched it A LOT. As soon as it happened I tried to put my fingers back in place and said “I think I broke my fingers” really calmly like you did lol. Crazy how similar our injuries were. Stay up bro.

Going through something similar right now. Fractured the scaphoid bone in my wrist. The surgeon said it was an old injury, 5+ years, that just never healed. So the bone was fully dead. Had surgery last week- a bone graft from my hip to replace it, and there's a chance it never heals and I get arthritis. I've heard so many people say they probably broke something and never got it fixed. If you're ever in doubt, just get it x-rayed. You only get one body.

same, scaphoid is one of the worst bones in your body to break. Its a bugger to heal. I was in a cast for 3 months.

Thanks for sharing. Its a bit painful to watch, but im glad you are all good now. Broke the same bone 2 weeks before my snowboarding trip. But no cuts and no stitches. My surgeon proposed not to get a surgery, cause he had the same injury on both hands and he was doing good without surgeries. Two weeks later i was enjoying my time on a snowboard, with friends, with my hand still in a cast )) But i was 10 years younger

I broke my upper humerus doing a frontside grind in a quarter pipe some years ago. I came in really crooked and I thought I could ride it out but matrix’d in the air and landed on my elbow. I ended up driving myself to the hospital and got 27 screws with 3 plates. It’s taken me a long time to feel comfortable doing frontside grinds again, but I just worked my way up slowly, it’s all mental just hard to get over your the obstacles your mind

In the 70s as kids we used leather gardening gloves for ' speed runs ' & pools/ bowls. Towards the 80s velcro strapped wrist guards were quite common. Laybacks and inverts etc. We rode 13 ft ramps and more even back then. Pre 1976 I remember going full tilt at a kerb and only just making a nose grab ' bunny hop' onto it with skin to spare. Minus several finger ,👇 🩸🩸 potential! (Pre-olly days). Not so good for those of use into art &/or guitars etc.

Snapped my right forearm clean in half last January at the age of 43….pins plates hundreds or staples and two massive scars either side if my arm….and I was back skating and in the gym 6 weeks later. You just can’t let these things effect your mentality…..you’ll be back in no time

I destroyed my lower leg, bones, tendons, ligaments at 38 it took me over a year to be able to properly skate again. Still recovering but I managed to get back this year in a way I thought I never would. (I also did my hand a while back bad enough they almost replaced on of the bones in my ring finger, took 8 years to make a fist.) Heck yeah buddy! Take it easy weaning back into it. It will come. have fun. It seems kooky but I skate transition with slide gloves now.

Dislocated same 2 fingers, had a cast for a week and then just finger splints and physio for probably 8 weeks, not as bad as your injury but it still ruins your mind set and confidence. Was scared to skate again after 11 weeks until the fingers could touch my hand. They still a bit stiff months later but fully functional and not to worried about falling on it.
