China has invested billions of dollars into the continent of Africa to build massive infrastructure projects in African countries. Much of this infrastructure is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, an estimated 1 trillion dollar plan to connect the country to trade routes all over the world.
» Subscribe to NowThis World: go.nowth.is/World_Subscribe
» Watch the Previous Episode: go.nowth.is/2LhNmtv
While China’s Belt and Road Initiative was only proposed in 2013, the country’s first infrastructure project on the African continent was built decades ago. The TazaHra railway, completed in 1976, was built to connect copper mines in Zambia to Dar EH Salaam, Tanzania’s former capital. The TazHara railway was the first infrastructure project built on a pan-African scale.
China’s Belt and Road projects will be designed to create new trade routes within and between African countries. In 2017, a Chinese firm opened a railway network in Kenya, connecting its capital Nairobi to the port city of Mombasa. There are already plans to extend this network into South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Many observers worry that African countries won’t be able to pay back these debts, placing them in what’s been called a quote “debt trap.” But others think that as African countries rise economically, they could actually have the upper hand by the time they negotiate payments back to China. This explains why African leaders have been so confident in calling Chinese investment a “win-win.”
But is China’s investment in the continent actually a “win-win” as some African and Chinese leaders have said? OR is it just a new form of colonialism on a continent that’s experienced so much of it? In this episode, we’re examining China’s Belt and Road Initiative and what it might mean for Africa.

Well when Africa develops it will mean that there's a new competition in the global markets. Asia is enough competition for Western markets and now when a continent (Africa) that doesn't need to spend to get raw materials but just digs them up and sell finished products elsewhere at a cheaper price it means trouble for Western economies.

@thulasmash2195

The thing is that the modernisation of Africa will disrupt the balance of the economic system. Africa gets rich by selling raw products and Europe/America gets rich by selling the final product back to them, this is a balance of the economy. Now what will happen when Africa uses its raws to make the final product? That means Africa will stop buying the final product from America/Europe and instead produce its own and that will unbalance the economic system. Those two nations are scared of that happening which is why they've ignored Africas call for assistance in developing the continent. China just disrupted that system which those two nations had planned out which is why they are against the China-Africa deal.

Honestly African countries have all this mineral wealth in resources, but don't have the infrastructure , technology, skills to properly utilize it. There are civi wars and conflicts for them for years i.e. blood diamonds, oil. yet they still remain poor. China is the only one elevating their society as an external power, trickle-down economics. Vice had a clip of China's investment in Chile for a radar system and the people in the nearby town saw considerable economic, infrastructural, tech, skill gain from the short stay by the Chinese. But of course american media spins it of as neo-colonialism without realizing the people are much better off than before.

It's simple. China is closing in to its maximum growth potential and the economy will be saturated when they want more. What is better than investing in a continent massively rich in resources and create a new China? When they help a continent flourish, the US is keeping it devastated and constantly conflicted. I'd side with China on this. I bet they're winning the hearts of locals instead of massacring them and stealing from their land.

Europe had its chance in African, but they failed and decided to leave the continent. Now China is coming in to build infrastructures like railways, schools, industries, etc so that more job opportunities can be provided to the people, now the "white people" are coming back with skepticism, typical western mainstream. Of course, China is interested in investing in Africa for its resources, but at least the business transaction has never been done in a manner of compulsion or threats unlike the west has been doing for decades. Also, China prefer stability and peace in African continent, abstaining themselves from political interference in Africa. So it's never that hard for the African to choose for a long-term partnership between China/Russia and the west.

Of course it is benefit. Who else do China consult when investing in Africa.Of course the sovereign state .Only when terms are acceptable do China start to invest in Africa. Second ,problems will definitely arise. It is impossible not to have problem when the projects are so numerous and mega. But the benefits far outweigh the cost. To have economic development, basic infrastructure like roads , airports need to be built in order for any economic activities to take place.Does China has a motive in helping Africa ?Yes, but a benign one. They want to aid Africa ‘s economic development so that they could be a manufacturing base for China in future as the economic manufacturing costs in China is getting more expensive. Moreover, as Africa becomes better off , they could buy more things from China which is cheaper.Things from Europe and America is too unaffordable for average African .So , there is no reason why China want to practice neo colonialism on Africa. Both Africa and China will have a win - win situation if the initiative is successful. Also , if Africa has better std of living, there will be fewer refugees flocking to Europe too. So it benefits Europe as well.

If china is investing in african countries and those countries are allowing them to do so ,then obviously both sides are getting benefits by this , the only difference is that china will get more benefits than africa , but why west is concerned about this now, are they concerned about african countries ,umm... i don't think so, they are concerned about china's rising influence in africa, west also could have had done the same, nobody was stopping them ,only if they had diverted their attention from imposing sanctions on the different countries and building the wall!!!

The worst colonialism was not in Africa but in South East Asia. In Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. Since 1511 when Malacca invaded by the Portuguese. Because spices in East indies were more expensive than gold. Africa was colonialized only since scramble of Africa in 1885.

Economic relations between China and Africa, one part of more general Africa-China relations, began centuries ago and continue through the present day. Nowadays, China seeks resources for its growing consumption, and African countries seek funds to develop their infrastructures. Large-scale structural projects, often accompanied by a soft loan, are proposed to African countries rich in natural resources. China commonly funds the construction of infrastructure such as roads and railroads, dams, ports, and airports. While relations are mainly conducted through diplomacy and trade, military support via the provision of arms and other equipment is also a major component. In the diplomatic and economic rush into Africa, Taiwan, the United States, France, and the UK are China's main competitors. China surpassed the US in 2009 to became the largest trading partner of Africa. Bilateral trade agreements have been signed between China and 40 countries of the continent. In 2000, China Africa Trade amounted to $10 billion and by 2014, it had grown to $220 billion.

For those defending China, most people here can agree that colonialism was mostly bad and what the West did under colonialism is a large reason why Africa is struggling today. That being said, just because others have done worse doesnt make what China is doing right. African countries and the African people should be wary of bad deals all over the world. An elderly man living in a rural town in South Africa recently wrote a letter to a provincial newspaper telling of something that happened to his daughter while she was working at a university in China in 2008 and 2009. A Chinese professor told her that within twenty years the entire Africa will belong to China, without a single shot having been fired. When she asked how that could be done he said: "We buy Africa." The author of the letter reasoned that in the light of that statement, there might (who knows?) be more to our new President's plan to legalize land expropriation without compensation, since it would be so easy to get money by expropriating land without compensation, and then selling it to China.

What will you do to develop Africa then? If China just gives money to Africa like how the West claims to do, the money will probably going to the pockets of corrupted officials. This is actually the best way. We build the infrastructure for them, and they give their resources as payment. (If we just give them money, they are not capable of building such infrastructure on their own.)

here is the agenda all u guys are talking about: as China builds infrastructure in Africa, you will see the commercial activities booming in Africa, people will get richer, China will trade their investment for markets, resources and influence with a low interest rate. As Africa gets richer, these countries will be more active in international affairs cause they have more bargaining chips, they will be strategic partners with China in countering Europe and the US. Now, Africa is gonna face all the problems that every developed modernized nation has gone through, there is no doubt about it, and they need to be cautious monitoring through those deep waters. China is not doing this out of charity, of frigging course, r u still living in La La Land? China is doing it for its interests, and African countries are doing this for theirs, cause believe it or not, sometimes countries' interests do overlap.

The west sees China as a threat to their influence over their the globe and that's why they complain about Chinese investment in Africa. Countries like France want to maintain their position of influence over Africa and doesn't want China stepping in. The west is killing many people with its military interventions in countries like Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, and many more. During Imperialism, the west caused many problems in its former colonies and these problems still exist today. It's not just Africa. the British escalated the conflict between Hindus and Muslims in India. On the other hand, at least with what China's doing, there's no violence involved and Africa is benefiting with development, infastructure, and economic growth.
