Something people tend to not realise is that sometimes flouride levels are actually reduced by the regulations about flouride levels in drinking water, since it's naturally occurring in many places. Toxicity is about dosage. Too much of pretty much anything will kill you. Below the toxic level, everything is safe.

What many people do not understand when it comes to topics such as water fluoridation, fluoride in your toothpaste and a host of other "chemicals" is that toxicity is determined by DOSAGE. Anything can be toxic given a high enough dosage. An element or compound simply existing in something you consume or interact with says nothing about its detrimental effects on your health. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, it is in things like cigarette smoke, yet it's also produced in the body when you metabolise amino acids in foods such as apples. And yet you will see posts on social media highlighting how the toxic formaldehyde can be found in vaccines or certain foods. You can understand how silly that sounds when you put it into the perspective of dosage.

fmlAllthetime No. That's not a strawman. It's sarcasm. Except for the last sentence. I'm not aware of any other country that takes the idea of liberty to such an extreme that they want to make their own and everyone elses lives worse.
@fmlAllthetime
@fmlAllthetime 9 жыл бұрын
SarthorS It was a strawman. You attacked a misrepresentation through sarcasm. Secondly, no one actually wants that, news flash; not everyone has the same idea on the way it should be done. Some want a benevolent dictatorship, some want a constitutional monarchy, some want a republic, some want communism, some want capitalism, some want anarchy, some want to go back to a barter system and so on. I'm not trying to insult you, but you're definitely conflating things in an illogical manner.
@SarthorS
@SarthorS 9 жыл бұрын
fmlAllthetime No, It would only have been a strawman if I had tried to present it seriously and then built an argument against it. A strawman is presenting a position that a person doesn't actually hold in order to argue against that instead of the persons genuine position. I didn't attack a misrepresentation through sarcasm. The misrepresentation WAS the sarcasm. I had assumed that when I spoke of them being evil that it was obvious enough that I was joking. But then if you come from a country that has so many vocal religious extremists, I guess it's hard to tell when someone is parodying them. And yes, people have preferences for all sorts of different political systems. But on the idea of liberty, I know of no other country that has such a extreme view of it that is accepted by such a large proportion of the population. This is something that I genuinely want to understand better because it is a position that I currently view as being anti-social and based mostly on selfishness.

SarthorS Idividuals are what make society, not the other way around. An individual has free will to *choose* what they will do in this life, the monolithic beast of a society we have today has no such liberty. It moves slowly, inefficiently, and wastefully.Educated individualism is a far better alternative because through education you can promote altruism while still giving the choice of action to the individual in how they will or will not pursue this. *Most* people when taught to share, will, willingly I might add. Sarcasm can be a powerful rhetorical tool, and in that sense (when used like that) it should be taken seriously. Sarcasm is different in every culture as well, and every individual takes it differently also. It also doesn't come across to great in text... especially when there are so many fucking retarded trolls on this website ya know? Secondly you didn't attack the point he posited. You attack a misrepresentation, sarcastically or not. His issue was with forced government mandates on personal health, which any classic liberal would strongly disagree with, most anarchists would disagree with and most conservatives would disagree with. That is a pretty large chunk of humanity that disagrees with your intended point, sarcastic or not.

@Voidsworn
@Voidsworn 9 жыл бұрын
It is toxic if ingested in certain quantities. So is water, oxygen, sugar, Vitamin A, coffee, etc DEPENDING on certain factors. Oftentimes, the difference between therapeutic and poison is dosage. The quantity of some material over how much time relative to the the body's rate of neutralizing/excreting and the mass of the organism (see LD50 and similar) said materal is what determines toxicicity. Some compounds, such as botulinum toxin and ricin are extremely lethal. Botox is botulinum toxin in an EXTREMELY EXTREMELY small fraction of a fraction of an amount can be nonlethal, used in cosmetic surgery. Ricin, OTOH, prevents cells from being able to make proteins, leading to death (usually). Digitalis is highly lethal, but therapeutic for heart conditions. Some things are toxic to us, such as tetradotoxin, but some garter snakes, octopi, pufferfish are completely immune/resistant.

Some misinformation here. Cant find the study anymore, but the better the filter, the more it removes everything, including flouride _and_ lead. Those slow Brita filters that sit on the counter remove 30% of flouride, iirc, but undersink filters remove 90% iirc, and reverse osmosis almost all. Moral of story: get a good filter to remove lead and nasty side chemicals, and use flouride toothpaste and mouthwash to get back the flouride. Kinda sad it comes to this, but it's the price to pay for modern life i guess.

Based on comments, and my own ambient awareness, it would be really interesting if you could do a follow-up video addressing the knowledge/belief that fluoride is harmful - both in toothpaste for contact, and consumed in drinking water - in terms of things like cancer and neurological effects. I mean, personally I think the tradeoff of strong enamel and vastly reduced cavity risk is worth the (potentially) tiny increase in health risk in other areas, but a lot of people disagree with that. "In some developed countries, the health and economic benefits of fluoridation may be small, but particularly important in deprived areas, where water fluoridation may be a key factor in reducing inequalities in dental health."[34]"

@newswars-dotcom thanks for posting that. I did take a read through. firstly, a couple of % points in IQ as it states cant really be classed as significant. how did they control all the other variables? not enough in the report to persuade me tbh - a single study. But certainly something to take on board. My standpoint is that good oral hygiene has shown a wide veriety of life long health benefits. everything we consume is always a tradeoff and its easy to show the the downsides in isolation to show a point. bottom line is we are all dying from the moment of conception, dont lose sight of that. Also, what else are we being lied to about? Lots I expect! And for a variety of reasons, some I agree with, some not. Ill check out Iodine V floride. btw, sodium floride is derived for hydrofloric acid, but is not the same, and has neutral ph - i think... but anyhows, i cannot agree enough that thorough cleaning is far and above more useful than any kind of checmical treatment. its the same in food equipment disinfection. the disinfection should really only be a belt and braces backup.

Fluoridation of drinking water also prevents tooth decay by redirecting the metabolic pathway of the bacteria streptococcus mutains. Ingested F+ is secreted in saliva and prevents s.mutains from producing lactic acid, which is what actually causes cavities. Fluoridation conspiracy theorists always insist that drinking fluoride is pointless because its mechanism is topical, but fluoridation DOES work topically when ingested because of constant low levels in saliva. Fluoridation has at least two completely different mechanisms that im aware of

@malachiq7357
@malachiq7357 9 жыл бұрын
No, it does not 'calcify' the pineal gland. There are calcium, fluoride and phosphorous deposits in the gland that increase proportionally with age. Water fluoridation is safe and effective for dental hygiene.

Damstraight68 See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineal_gland#Calcification Not much is known about how the deposits actually get there, but as I said they are shown to increase as age increases. Rest assured, if fluoride was the problem it would be *very* obvious (areas w/ water fluoridation would be easily correlated as the cause). Also the fact that it is not just fluoride but calcium and phosphorous deposits means that it is not a specific problem, it may be naturally occurring.

One issue I notice with people who claim that fluoride in water is perfectly safe; is that they assume that "harmful" must mean some noticeable health issue such as "cancer". Just because something isn't outright harming you, does not mean there is not a negative effect. After all, your body is essentially a bag of chemicals. Having slightly less, or slightly more of a specific chemical than you are supposed to have will not necessarily kill you; but it does effect things such as mood, energy, and general lifestyle. That's why we give medication to people with various mental disorders. Speaking of which, fluoride and fluorine are major components of a lot of medication. It increases the potency of the drug. So while fluoride by itself may be fairly safe; where are the studies on how it can affect people who are already on medications?

userasdf It's a shame that some anti-GMO people go crazy and kind of poison the issue in the eye of the public, thus giving the more sensible members of the movement a harder job. userasdf The only valid potential problem with GMOs is environmental contamination, and even that I'd say isn't as much a problem as people make it out to be, considering that one species overtaking another has been the basis of evolution since the first cell formed on Earth. The only difference is that we're the ones guiding the evolution instead of randomness. As for Monsanto's business practices...first off, their practices are irrelevant to the safety of the GMOs. Second off, most of the so-called horrible business practices are unfounded claims or misrepresentations (terminator seeds aren't a thing, Monsanto has never sued anyone for accidental contamination with their seeds, and even non-GMO companies require re-purchasing of seeds at regular intervals). Third off, Monsanto is only one of many biotech firms the world over who produce GMOs, yet they are the only ones people point to for blame in anything GMO-related. They're a scapegoat. So overall, whatever you think of Monsanto (and I hope that even those opinions are based on facts, not media spin and propaganda), that's irrelevant to whether GMOs are pros or cons for the world.

After using a filter that is "supposed" to get everything except fluoride, as mandated by the FDA I think, it is still at 70 ppm. Is this all fluoride, or is the filter probably not getting everything? Eric Fling Who would you rather have controlling the water supply? Individuals don't have the resources, corporations don't have the incentive (unless water prices increased a thousandfold.)

Eric Fling Yeah, screw the government! Putting a harmless chemical in our water in order to help prevent tooth decay, HOW DARE THEY?!

Eric Fling I doubt you would be smart enough to do that yourself, so the government steps in.

Maximum Of Twenty No such thing as a harmless chemical only harmless amounts. Everything can kill you with the right amount. And I know have fluorosis because I got to much fluoride when my teeth were developing. So again, not harmless.

Everybody knows that fluoride is toxic and that it helps prevent tooth decay, so there's a trade off. What this video seems to ignore is the difference between sodium fluoride and naturally occurring flouride. Along with the argument that fluoride is now in toothpaste so it probably doesn't need to be added to tap water as well. The point of this video is to explain the method of flouride cavity prevention, but it would be a lot more useful if scishow would make another video addressing the water fluoridation debate. So dear scishow, please do that. There are plenty of countries where adding flouride to the water has been discontinued (I'm currently living in Japan for example) so I think it's worth looking into. Also by completely ignoring the debate, scishow has lost some credibility... unless they planned on addressing it in a separate video.
