what makes this sad is when EvaMilan said "you did the best you could" as a mom but in the episode with Taissir she explicitly said she didn't do her best on purpose. this is so complicated and painful and important to watch.

Yeahh..no. it's so complicated. I'm just left with a lot of questions. Did she treat her younger daughter better? or was Eva-Milan just oblivious to certain things? Can Edina define "mother"? does she think she was a good mother? when does a person decide to not live in regret anymore? especially when you have children.

yes I agree this is very complicated. I also think we need to take into consideration her oldest daughter. I see her oldest daughter telling/ encouraging her mother to be a better mother not only to her but her little sister. also giving the youngest daughter the support of love and sympathy that she lacked during her childhood

A mother should never make her children feel like they hold her back or keep her from being happy. Being a mother is hard and you do miss out on a lot of things when you have them young, but you should never make them feel guilty for you being alone or not accomplishing your potential. Your child should always feel like the most important thing in the world and wanted, not like a burden.

the younger daughter seems indoctrinated by the mom to be on her side, putting her mom first before her own feelings. the older daughter seems to realise how bad her mum treated her growing up and is understandably angry and disappointed that she never got what she needed to flourish. the mother seems unwilling or incapable of accepting that she did a bad job even though she admitted that she didn't try her best. I am so so sad for the children in this situation.

yes! EvaMilan clearly feels a lot of guilt for how unhappy her mother is while Taissir feels outraged that she was ever made to feel that way. I wonder how vocal Edina was about her children derailing her life. It comes off as if she expressed it to her children pretty often. incredibly sad.

Yes, the daughter is a loyal child and is aware of her mom's sacrifices. God bless her for that! Her mom spent her life putting her kids first, how about letting this daughter appreciate her mom back by loving her through whichever way it is...even if it's putting her mom's feelings first before hers? I would love to see the sisters talk. The difference between how they interact with their mom is pretty apparent. This daughter seems to feel empathy towards her mother despite Edina resenting her kids while Taissir seemed to have resentment because of her mother's resentment towards her kids. I assume they were raised pretty differently.

misssupreme personalities have a lot to do with it- and some of that comes from the Baby daddy which could also put a strain on the mother if she sees certain characteristics of someone that hurt her. It’s complicated

I think the big difference was probably more so the fact that Taissir was the first born, so likely only really had her mother for support/guidance etc. Whereas this daughter likely had her older sister to help fill those voids... Might've helped this daughter harbour less resentment? ❤

Edina seems so resentful and cynical towards her life in general and even towards her children. She seems like she's listening to her children but not really understanding what they're saying. Edina says she felt alone in her life. You would think she wouldn't want her kids to feel the same way or that she would at least understand and sympathize with them. She thinks the world, and her children, owe her something. It sucks to say..but that's not how life works. She'll never be happy if she is always comparing the amount of good life experiences she has to someone else's.

That's a very simplistic and misguided view. No mother has children thinking their going to bring dysfunction and past traumas into to their lives. These behaviours have a way of revealing themselves once the children come along, and then they get caught in a cycle. Human beings are complex, relationships are complex. Edina obviously wanted her children, otherwise they wouldn't be here, what she didn't want/expect was that she'd be doing it all on her own. It's very easy to make a judgement when looking at a snapshot of someone's life.
@Ekaekto
@Ekaekto 7 жыл бұрын
DeeperThanMyThoughts She specifically says in the video, that birthing her children is enough, that she knew (right from the beginning) she wasn't going to try to be the best parent. So, in this case I would disagree with you, though your comment stands true for many other dysfunctionsl parent-child relationships...

Yes! I tell my mom this all the time. My mom was young when she had me & worked her butt off to provide, which I really appreciate, however she missed out on a lot. Now she's had time to grow & learn, so with my little sister, she's there for everything. I'm happy that she has that experience with my mom, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious. Also just how she raises my little sister is so different. My mom was really strict with me, meanwhile my sister gets away with murder.

It's astounding how Edina's relationship with her daughters can simultaneously be so similar and yet so different. For me, the actual ideas and content communicated in many of Edina and EvaMilan's answers conveys the same strain in the relationship that so many of us can't relate to but that Taissir knows all too well. But the manner in which they interact appears quite dissimilar from the interview with Taissir. The elder sister expressed a desire to have a more deliberate and honest connection with her mother, but did so in a calm, reserved manner that almost seemed resigned to the fact that her hope may not ever come true. She may be at a place where she has more fully accepted what her relationship with her mother will always be. Here, EvaMilan is much more emotional. We see such big, beautiful smiles but also tears shed amidst guilt that she somehow robbed her mother of opportunities at happiness. Your videos are so intriguing that it's hard to observe without trying to make inferences -- I feel as if Edina and EvaMilan have a closer relationship in some part due to the fact that EvaMilan is more willing to accept responsibility and blame for some of Edina's life circumstances. Not to say that blame is deserved or justified (because I certainly don't feel that it is), but it may be what Edina is looking for and expecting in her children. I think they're all incredibly brave for sharing these intimate moments with us. Many responses including mine contain some degree of judgment of Edina, but she must be applauded for conquering her nerves, which do seem to play a bigger role with her than either of her daughters, and opening up to the world with her opinions and ideas about life and family.

the daughter's very right, the world doesn't owe us anything, and thinking that all the time, it'll just make you miserable. I went to the poorest countries, and their smile is 10x more than the people I see on the subways. somehow, the people who have the littlest find their appreciation. at the same time, poverty is a disease and it's definitely not right, but going around, not helping people just because they're "better" off than you is a skewed way to live.

Agreed! I travelled to Tanzania, Africa this past spring and the people there had the kindest souls. I was walking one day alone on a dirt pathway to the school (we were fixing it up) and ended up walking with a young boy on his way to class and he grabbed my hand and put a bracelet on it. That is only a small example, but that little boy most likely knew I was financially stable because of my skin colour, yet he was still so giving!

I think a lot of people viewing have their own opinions and are projecting their own unrealistic ideals of what motherhood means on Edina. No one has mentioned the fact that this womxn had children and had to deal with no help (i.e. dead beat dads). Being a single mom is hard as fuck. Edina also seems to be parenting from a space of unresolved pain. I appreciate her honesty and vulnerability. If anything, this video and the one before with Taissir have taught me how difficult motherhood is. And how mothers are people too, who have the potential to fuck up but also still deserve love and understanding. It's a tough job. Thanks again Skin Deep, I always leave these videos having experienced something new or having thought about humanity in a more complex/nuanced way. This docu-series is the highlight of my life.

The way Edina goes about it is all wrong. My mom is a single mother, most of my aunts are single mothers. It's Edina's attitude about the world owing her something and her opinion of her children ruining her life that made it hard. My mom was single for years and so were most of my aunts. But going around with this negative attitude and the prerogative that you're going to be a half-assed mother doesn't help anything. She's not single because of her kids, she's single because she didn't put herself out there. And if she did, men probably saw how she treated her kids and wanted no part of that. The way people treat others (especially family) is a direct reflection of how they'll more or less treat you. Edina is taking the easy way out and harboring resentment for her kids and then in turn making them feel bad. No one told Edina to have a child. And no one made her have a second or a third. But she did. If you don't want children you should take the necessary precautions so that it doesn't happen. Not only that but she goes around acting like the fact that she didn't abort them/give them up for adoption makes her some sort of saint. If you decide to have sex and then keep the child, you know what's in store. And it doesn't matter how old you are, you need to accept the consequences. There are people who've had kids at 16. Are they the best parents? No. But blatantly letting your child see how distressed you are because of them only hurts them more. This mother is selfish, point. blank. period. No one can tell her anything because she has an excuse for it all and it always ends up back on her kids. It's horrible.
@foreverkrr4507
@foreverkrr4507 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with both statements in the comment section. I agree that the mother did seem like she was maybe too young to have children which didn't help but she is grown now and once children are grown they really need to realize that parents are not superwoman or superman. They are just as human as we are. My sister has this problem and she gets almost "appalled" when my mom doesn't treat her like a child and treats her as the adult she is because she forgets that our mother is human, she raised us, gave us a great education at the best schools, gave us love, vacations in Barbados, constant attention and praise, she gave us everything we could have ever wanted. We are both in our mid 20's now and although our mom will always be there for us she already raised us, it's time for her to focus on herself now at 50 years old and find out what it is SHE wants out of life. We will always need her, but she needs to find who she is again. I hope once my sister becomes a mother herself she'll have a bit more understanding and empathy for our mom, especially after how much she's done for us our entire lives. She's VERY hard on her when we've been given everything. I guess my sister's sense of entitlement may be what causes her to feel that way but again hopefully she will grow out of that and grow up a little bit. She's 25 now but age really doesn't always equal understanding or maturity or even empathy

I think one of the reasons why people are so angry in the comments - and believe me, I'm one of them, listening to Edina talk is borderline rage-inducing - is because the mom is never going to change. It's one thing if you've messed up in life and grow and change from that, and accept responsibility for your shortcomings; we all make mistakes. But Edina lacks the self-awareness and maturity to apologize for the tremendous hurt she's inflicted upon her kids. She isn't going to heal because she doesn't think she's done anything wrong. I hope her kids have good support networks outside of their family and have access to therapy; unfortunately, they're going to have to heal on their own.

I feel bad for the way Edina thinks and reacts, for the way she was raised that way, the good she could bring without it and the fact that she has influenced her children that way. This and Tassir's were difficult to watch, but showed me how I do not want to be in life and with my children.
@ImSurayyyah

This really pains me to watch because I am seeing a possibility of my future self in the mother. I am 22 and although I have no children I see the hard shell all over her from holding on to the past and what "could" have or "should" have happened. Honestly, I was getting irritated by the mothers responses but listening to her with humble ears I realize this is just the way she has allowed life to groom her. I don't agree with everything she says but I do see that by being unforgiving towards life and yourself you can end up pushing the world away and being disconnected from the ones that love you. ugh, I can hardly explain well but this taught me a lot. I want to let go of my "should have's and could have's" before I allow them cultivate my thoughts and limits of love.

Edina as a person is a reminder that parents are ACTUAL people, they aren't perfect. They have character flaws that come through when parenting. Honestly, a lot of single moms feel a lot of resentment and it is completely understandable because they are doing it all alone and it is exhausting. She did what she could in her circumstances, but I really do hope that she lets go some of the pessimism she has built up as a defense for 20 plus years.

I feel sad for the mom and her children. The mom, Edina was a young mother who was overwhelmed with her situation and saw her youth ripped away from her. While the mother may not receive an award for mother of the year she does not reserve the title of the 'worst mom'. Her situation highlights the reality of having kids young and being alone. It is easy to point to examples of other single moms but everyone is not the same and Edina may have needed help and encouragement from someone else. As a consequence of her being overwhelmed thereby leading to depression and being alone she set goals for her (to be an okay mom) and her daughters have been hurt . I pray that both the mother and her children would be able to let go of all the past hurt and opportunities and create new wonderful memories.

I see where you're coming from, but I disagree. I think Eva has bought into the "guilt of her existence" and cops to her mother's unacceptable behavior as a result. Edina probably likes Eva more because she can get away with her bullshit. Taissir, on the other hand, was quite honest and critical of her mother (as she should have been), and Edina seems to be incapable of accepting any sort of criticism whatsoever. That probably damaged their relationship a bit. Just my two cents.

The mother is very narcissistic. I can understand why her life experience and how her upbringing has effected her, but I feel for her children. Having been raised myself by a narcissistic mother (although admittedly my mother was much more mature) I embathize with the stuggle, and applaud their resiliency an effort to better themselves. I don't believe she is trying to be a "bad mom" as so many people keep saying. I don't blame her for never being taught how to parent, or how to deal with her emotions properly. I do blame her for not actively seeking help, and I can blame the society that makes narcissistic mother, but niether of which is really satisfying or helps anything. I just hope that the family is able to work on there communication in the future, and that the children are able to better themselves as they go though adulthood

+MusicsHerLife Thanks, I hope I do after watching this. You seemed to have missed my point. As a parent, do everything in your power to deflect pain from your kids. You don't go telling your kids that you wouldn't help them or do your best with them just because you're hurt and in pain. How can you even comprehend that or make excuses for such a sorry ass of a mom. Why didn't she give her kids up so she could have had the good life she wanted, maybe then these girls may have had a better life. smdh!

+Brew Werb how do you expect someone who's so messed up/depressed/filled with anxiety/done to think clear enough to make any "good" decision? HER MIND WAS NOT THERE. She did NOT know better. That's my point. She was messed up.

+Abyssiniya you're obviously not getting the point. Her mind obviously wasnt clear enough to think "actually, i'm not gonna have sex because if I were to get pregnant, I wouldnt provide the child with a very good life". There's no basic logic like that in the mind of a young and depressed person. Jeez.
@brewwerb9201
@brewwerb9201 8 жыл бұрын
+Abyssiniya Amen! I have a colleague who absolutely hates kids and swore to herself never to have any. Well she became pregnant and chose to keep that baby girl. When she's at work, she'd talk about how stressed she is with the child and how she couldn't wait to drop her off with her mom, or can't wait until she's older and needs less attention from her, blah, blah, blah. It's always something. I always imagined how terrible of a mother she was to that child until I had the opportunity to meet her with her daughter and I couldn't believe it. The love and care and attention she adorned on that child, the bond they had, and nickname for her. Initially I thought it was an act, but as I type this, I can't count how many times I've been to her house and seen her with that girl. Mind you, she still hates kids, is stressed out by her own kid and sometimes is resentful that she can't go out with us because of her child. Moral of the story, even though she feels all kinds of way about her child and the decision she made to have her, she never ever says that to her, or makes her feel guilty for having her. All she does is show love to that child, she is now 7 years old. So stop making excuses for shitty moms @ MusicsHerLife

Absolutely! I learned that by observing my own mother. She had her own standards, beliefs and way of life before I existed and she uses that in her parenting. We tend to grow up thinking that our parents are "perfect" but we realize that they are just people doing the best they can.
@brewwerb9201
@brewwerb9201 8 жыл бұрын
+brooklynbaby756 Except this mom didn't do her best, she said so herself in the other video with her first daughter. She said she decided not to give them her best because she didn't get the best herself. Huh, really? No child should have to say "I'm sorry for all the things you missed out on life" or anything to that effect to their parent. They can say "thank you for giving up on this that or the other to raise me" or along those lines cos saying I'm sorry displays a sense of guilt. Why would you want your child to feel guilty for choices that you made? Then they become messed up and possibly do the same to their kids, and it becomes a cycle. This is one shitty mom, not because of how she feels ( everyone has a right to feel a certain way) but because of the emotional abuse to inflicted on her kids.
@nobodycares05
@nobodycares05 8 жыл бұрын
There goes the judgment again. I don't necessarily agree with Edina's parenting style but those are her choices. And at the end of the day, regardless of parenting or environment, a child will become who they become. That is evidently displayed in the characters of her daughters. Both girls are different and they treat their mom differently. Think about how that makes Edina feel. How would you feel?

The world throws a lot of crap at a lot of people, but you get to decide if you want to turn bitter and angry. But deciding to be bitter and angry only hurts you, and the ones that love you, as seen in these videos. =/ I think it's telling that Edina didn't really come up with an answer for her mom's best qualities besides "you did it." :/ I feel bad for everyone involved in this selection of videos. Taissir seems (rightfully) upset that her mom made her feel like a burden, and Edina seems to have taken the super understanding route where she dismisses *her* pain because her mom had a difficult life and has a right to be upset. I hope all of their lives get better and that the mother and children find peace.

I think feeling sorry for yourself and entitled as a single parent for too long robs the parent of experiencing the lessons and opportunities parenting provides. This is so sad. No child should EVER have to say to their parent, "I feel bad, because you never really got to live life because you had kids," like...the way she says it, the way she got so emotional immediately after asking that question says a lot. Her mother probably brought that up so much throughout their lives and that is so wrong. Lady, no one held a gun to your head and forced you to have children. You could have had abortions, you could have looked into adoption. No child should ever feel unwanted, or feel like their a burden/obligation. Wtf man this is so upsetting.

While it's not the perfect mom and daughter relationship, it's still deep and meaningful. My mom is my best friend and my platonic life partner. We've been there for each other when we had nothing and no one else. While, yes, we have some major issues and I don't understand most of my childhood I wouldn't trade my mother for anyone. I just try to learn from what we went through and try to make my kid's lives better. You don't just wake up and have all the answers once you have a kid.

The world doesn't owe anyone anything. Especially with the way us humans have treated it over all these years. If you want something then you need to work and go get it yourself. That's how things work. You can't just sit around waiting for things to happen for you, it'll never happen that way. The world waits for no one, either you create your own opportunities and go for it....or wait around forever just for nothing to happen. I'm also a firm believer that what you put out into the universe is what you will receive in turn, so don't be like this mom and constantly be negative and loathing about things that happened to her when there's people out here that have been through much worse. If you spread more positivity you'll get more positivity in return :).

Something people need to learn, a child has ALL the rights, a parent has ALL the responsibilities. A child has the right to love, respect, understanding, compassion. A parent has the responsibility to do all of that AND more. If a person knows they CANNOT uphold these responsibilities for the REST OF THEIR LIVES, maybe they should really rethink parenthood.
