Why is the Kh-22 the Real Beast in Russia's Missile Arsenal?

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, the specter of Russian missile attacks has loomed large. While hypersonic missiles like the Kinzhal grab headlines, it is the Kh-22, a seemingly less glamorous behemoth, that has Ukrainian air defenses truly worried.
Back in 2000, Ukraine handed over 386 Kh-22 missiles to Russia as part of a repayment for gas debt. Throughout the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have launched approximately 300 Kh-22 missiles at Ukraine, and up until now, none of these missiles have been intercepted or brought down by Ukrainian air defense forces. The Ukrainian air force spokesperson, Yuriy Ignat, openly admitted this fact, emphasizing the serious danger posed by Kh-22 missiles to Ukraine.
In its coverage last December, Moscow's media TASS reported that Ignat highlighted the technical hurdles posed by the Kh-22 missile, underlining the need for specialized means of interception. The missile's speed and trajectory pose a significant challenge for traditional air defense systems.
Ignat specifically noted the Patriot air defense systems as potentially effective against the Kh-22, but their success in the Ukrainian context remains uncertain. Despite receiving Western support in the form of SAMP-T, Patriot, Iris-T, NASAMS, and Crotale air defense systems, Ukrainian authorities argue that the provided systems are inadequate to counter the Kh-22 threat.
What makes this missile particularly challenging to defeat, and why this cold war relic gives Ukraine more chills than the hypersonic Kinzhal?

The whole anti-Kinzhal campaign that happened in the media after the "Patriot incident" was obviously pre-planned in advanced. For a start, 2 explosions were seen on the Patriot site, they completely ignored this and continued claiming that all Kinzhals had been shot down by the Patriot. Secondly, the intensity with which they mocked and downplayed the Kinzhal missile didn't make any sense. Defending itself, is the easiest job for any SAM system because even when facing a maneuvering hypersonic missile, in the last stage it has to fly along a predictable path in order to hit. We saw the Patriot system lob 32 interceptor in the air, seconds before the explosions occured. Even if there were no explosions and all Kinzhals were shot down, that doesn't mean the Patriot has an easy time dealing with them. The primary purpose of a SAM system is to provide a protection umbrella over high value targets and this is where the Patriot fails because the Kinzhal missile reduces its effective range significantly. Thus, when you have SAM system intercept any ballistic missiles successfully, you cannot simply draw the conclusion that the ballistic missile is useless. The whole thing was a US military industrial complex directed psychological operation created to promote the Patriot systemand and downplay Russian weapons in general.

My wife owns the flat she grew up in which used to be base housing at Dyagilevo Air Base in Ryazan, Russia which has been a bomber training base and officer academy for many years. The husband of my son's godmother (my wife's niece) just completed or has almost completed officer training their. Whenever I get to go, I sit on the balcony and in the afternoon until evening I watch the bombers fly overead. I especially like the sound of the turboprop bomber TU-95 (Bear) as occasionally one would stop by the base. I don't like war, but understand it happens, but there is something about seeing these big aircraft flying overhead and landing a half mile (from one end of strip) from your flat just gets your blood pumping. Due to health reasons I haven't been back in a few years, but hope to go next summer as flights are expensive for us and we just had an expensive roof repair done. But hopefully I can go next year and tour the museum they have next to the air base, the pics looks interesting.

The speed and agility of the Kh-22 make it invincible in the face of the Ukrainian air defense, according to the Ukrainians themselves. The Kinzhal is agile, hypersonic, and due to the plasma layer formed by the friction around it, invisible for radar. So a couple things about the Kinzhal, It flies it's path at high altitude during it's hypersonic phase to avoid dense air resistance. It also uses EW features that present RADAR afterimages and "decoy signitures" that can be difficult to distinguish rapidly from the real missile, and for a period of it's flight it can not easily maneuver and is covered in a RADAR absorbing plasma cloud. The fact that it closes the distance so rapidly is one of the biggest challenges to shooting it down. You need a density of air defense to have a launch in the correct placement for when you can a fire solution that will intercept it. The missile will drop from hypersonic speeds to super sonic and begin maneuvers and use satellite guidance and possibly some form of seeker. It simply isn't plausible to shoot down this missile with a small number of launchers reliably. Rumors are from supposed inside sources, that in the best case the likelihood of a successful interception is about 15% for 2 Interceptors. Ukraine may have shot down a couple when pairing the MIM-104 launchers with Israel's advanced rapid response Iron dome RADARs and telemetry systems. The true difficulty of intercepting the missiles is due to the shortness of time available for a firing solution and the current placement of launchers. You can't get around this fact. It is also confounded by the fact that the original RADAR systems paired with the Patriot systems were confounded by the decoys which is why Ukraine also got the number of missiles fired wrong. Truth be told, if it wasn't for Space based reconnaissance of Russian air fields and E-3 sentry patrols/AWACs. The on the ground RADAR units would be lit-up by their RADAR signatures and have far more limited coverage. NATO is very creative in trying to fight a "not-war" with Russia. Any bystanders can see that these are, in fact, acts off war regardless of whether Ukrainians fingers push the final button. the real problem for NATO going forward is the lack of availability of interceptors. 10/10 Kinzhals shot down is such as exaggerated joke of a claim to make anyway.

Nothing in the Ukrainian skies can achieve the speed of a kinzhal or the Maneuvering Gs to intercept it. They can't intercept a Kh-22, they can't even intercept an Iskander M just yet but they have intercepted a couple of Kinzhals already. Wow! Great feat. What's left is improving on their lying capability because this is not even good enough propaganda.

Also, the fact that the Earth is curved, these missiles could fly above the ocean and by the time any navy registers it's coming, it's coming in too fast and there is little to no time to react. USA invested all it's might into NAVY based superiority while Russians simply developed a missile to counter this. What good is a three carrier group hosting hundreds of raptors and lightnings when one missile can remove them from the playing field.

There is only one country that can shot down hypersonic cruise missiles : Russia. Simply because they are the only one who have hypersonic cruise missiles. The Russian Hypersonic Kinzhals missiles are almost impossible to being down, especially by Patriot airdefence systems, which were designed in the 70s...and periodicly updated but retained all their original limitations. This is why western airdefences can't shoot down Russian Hypersonics: First, Hypersonics have faster speeds. Second, Hypersonics have changing trajectories on route to targets. Third, Hypersonics detect launched airdefence missiles, and avoid collusion with these missiles. Forth, Hypersonics act in groups, like wolf packs, with decoys, and can change targets at anytime. Every missiles hasan assigned 'role' in the pack. This is nothing new in Russian technology. It existed since the late 70s in the Soviet Airforce. I served with it, as a radar operator and s300 missile system launcher... henceforth I saw first hand why these Soviet weapons work so well, and are very reliable. The s300 was also used as an artillery..vertually devastating all enemy sides. From all the Zelensky Nato claims that I have seen about bringing down Russian Hypersonics, I concluded only political and propaganda value...as Zelensky tried ao hard to please US donors, and show some achievement for all the investments the west poured into his bank account. However, in reality, everything he said was just comedy joke... from someone who has no clue about military technology... especially by the Russian Federation side. But sooner or later, all liers get found out.

Probably because they are much cheaper, therefore a lot more of them, and while they can be shot down, you need a high end AA system to do it, MANPADs or point defense not enough. They move at supersonic speed and pack a wallop when they hit. Doesn't have the "street cred" of the Kinzhal or Iskander, but probably accounts for most of the dirty necessary work. Also, I had no idea the Kh-32 can withstand hits from 20mm shells and AA missile fragments. That is flat out incredible.

That was when the relation between the two countries was cordial. It all changed with the coup in 2014 and the Bandera worshippers came to power. Then the mass murder of Russians started and the interdictions on even the use of Russian. This led to the armed insurrection of the Russians living in the historic Russian regions annexed by the Ukraine at the independence. In 2022, Russia interfered in this civil war as guarantor of the Russian population in accordance with the Minsk agreements. Now the missiles are flying.

The X-22 that is in service with the Russian army is not the same as the X-22 that was introduced into service in the 1960s. The original X-22 missiles were upgraded to the X-22M variant after a few years, the original inaccurate X-22s were not produced for very long. All used in Ukraine are M variants with improved accuracy and X-32 deeply upgraded variants produced after 1990. The original X-22 could only carry the Tu-22, the Tu-22M3 could only carry the upgraded variants and the original could not.

@@user-ir5sh2kk7c It was inaccurate in that the first X-22 only recognized a ship above the surface, for attacks on land targets the circular deviation was very large. There was also a relatively large inaccuracy in ship targets. The inertial navigation system was not perfect. Radar guidance had great inaccuracies. Inertial system (autopilot) of the APK-22 type with radio-command correction and active radar homing warhead (guidance based on the reflection of electromagnetic radiation of the homing warhead from the target) Therefore, only X-22M variants were produced for the TU-22M2 aircraft from 1974, and all modifications were then based on this improved variant. the inaccuracy of radar guidance given by frequency, repetition rate, signal modulation, signal processing and its delay in the autopilot apparatus. It is the same as with anti-aircraft missiles, for higher accuracy, high frequencies must be used, the lower the frequency, the higher the inaccuracy.
