Also realized that emotions are a part of a Jedi’s life experience. It is the emotional strength through both The Force and mental strength that keeps the Jedi from so easily falling to the darkness, though this wasn’t a foolproof strategy.

I see your point, but the movies really don’t do Luke justice about Owen and Beru. Like he sees them and just kinda shrugs his shoulders and moves on, focusing more on Vader after his discovery that he was is father. If that were me I would have been more upset and attached to the people who raised me. I haven’t read the novels, I really hope they expand on Luke being more upset by their being murdered than in the movies. I’m sure time and expense had to do with it too in the movies.

The answer could be summed up in two words, "emotional maturity". In the EU, when members of Luke's Jedi started to turn to the darkside, many of the had the emotional maturity to self-reflect and realize what was happening and stop it. Those, that went deep, like Kyle, were still able to be pulled back to the light by his friends. If the situation allowed, Luke and his followers would try to pull people from the darkness and talk try to reason with that. Sometimes that worked. Sometimes it did not. This also explains why Anakin and later Janus, along with others could not turn back. Lack of emotional maturity, along with, for Anakin, no one trying to pull them back.
@Lilitha11
@Lilitha11 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I always thought the Jedi would have done really well with emotional counseling rather that just telling people to swallow their emotions. Like everyone knew Anakin had strong dark side influences, yet no one ever talked to him about it. He went completely to the dark side out of fear his lover would die, when she was in no danger. They could of just reassured him the visions are fear based because he lost his mother and there is nothing to worry about, and he would of been fine, and she also would of been fine.

@@Lilitha11 By the time the RotS happens, Anakin was suffering from long term ptsd from losing his mother, snapping over that, keeping that and his marriage secret. Dealing with all that, while losing his arm and being forced to fight in a war. Then, the cherry on top of that the Jedi Council has Obiwan secretly order Anakin to spy on Palpatine, an act of treason. Note the Jedi Council did not directly order him to do so. One of many disrespectful acts the Jedi Council took towards Anakin. So, the Jedi Council and Palpatine play Anakin off one another just after Anakin found out his wife was able to have a child (actually twins). This is not even counting all the events of the Clone Wars itself. Anakin falling to darkness was not the surprising part. The surprising part was that Anakin did not do so sooner. The tragedy is that in his mind Anakin was trying to do the right thing in a no win situation, and the universe literally ripped him apart in every way possible.

Yes, Luke's Jedi Order produced the most powerful force users. Among them, I would single out Kyp Durron, as the most powerful Jedi of the first 12 Praxeum students, who at one point in the Yuuzhan Vong War came to consider himself more powerful in the force than Luke himself. Then we would have Kueller, who in Mara Jade's own words had the potential to be more powerful than the Emperor. Another case would be Anakin Solo, who had such great potential in the force, that Luke himself did not believe that his own son would be as great a Jedi as his nephew had been. His other two brothers are powerful force users, but they would not measure up to him either. Luke's Jedi Order became this powerful because it abandoned the concepts and dogmas that caused its downfall in the first place. *"Yes, they would. For whatever prohibitions and restrictions the Jedi Order had placed on its members during the Old Republic, he now knew to the core of his being that, somehow, those restrictions no longer applied. to him and his fellow Jedi. This was the New Jedi Order.”* - Luke Skywalker (Survivor's Quest) Luke's Jedi Order is better, in every way. *"I have known Jedi. Many, many years ago. That knowing was not a gladness for me. I believed I would never know another, and I rejoiced in that belief. But it is a gladness for me to be proven wrong. I am happy to have known you, Jedi Luke Skywalker. You are more than they were. So you believe. But I say to you: you are greater than the Jedi of former days. It was the masters of the order of Ravens rein that started at all, the fear of attachments, one Master being the ultimate hypocrisy, and would indirectly be the reason why Anakin turn to the dark side of the force in the future. Even Trio which was the best out of all of them, saw the dark path that she was taking showing one of the most disgusting things, bottling your emotions not only that’s not a good idea, but even worse, it’s even more dangerous than attachments when it comes to the dark side all it takes is one incident and everything goes straight to hell and she is a perfect example this all the Jedi order disappeared, and she turned to the darkside, Trio was not sane either. I believe with time, all master would of turn to the darkside because they were unstable deep down.

@airsoft6147

The problem with the previous Jedi philosophy was that it could have worked well if they were simply monks living in isolation and meditation in their temples, but they weren't/didn't. They made it their duty to go out in the galaxy to protect and serve, thus they would have inevitably come into situations where they would be confronted with emotions that they were raised and trained to ignore instead of deal with and control and thus would have no experience with handling them. I also liked the point you made about Luke teaching some about the dangers of the dark side instead of just trying to ignore it. The Jedi of the past in their arrogance believed that they knew everything there was about the force and what to avoid which led them to becoming stagnant and uncompromising and also unable to adapt to the new dangers that was Sidious who unlike the Sith of old who were waving around their lightsabers in droves on the frontlines with the Jedi, were now doing everything from the shadows.

Your comment reminds me of the real world advice from an Emotional Processing KZfaq series: the purpose of not judging nor letting emotions take control of you isn’t to ignore or refuse to feel them. Having “willingness” to feel your emotions-but not let them rule you-is just the opposite: you see they’re a part of you but not your ‘destiny’ (my word); you can learn to feel them-even intense feelings-in order to be more fully invested in the human experience, but you also can learn to be mindful-detached in a way-in order to consciously choose how to respond to any emotion, including feeling it more, especially when appropriate to more fully participate in the human experience.

The Jedi weren't taught to ignore their feeling, they were taught to control them. They were taught temperance, patience and mindfulness. This is the direct opposite of ignoring the reality of emotional stressors - it's like saying that eating healthy food and exercising your body is to "ignore" the dangers of an unhealthy lifestyle rather than "learning to deal with it." Also, the system worked for _a thousand years._ The Clone Wars was both the darkest period in the Order's history since fall of the Old Republic and the nadir of it's spiritual decline, but even then most Jedi kept it together just fine. And as much as I think they should have handled Anakin differently, he was a very special case.
@airsoft6147

@@RelativelyBest I see your points, but I'd still say they were still trained to ignore their emotions for the most part. We hear multiple times that they arrent supposed to have attachment, and aren't allowed to love, which again could have worked if they stayed in their temples instead of going into a whole galaxy. Their idea of controlling their emotions was to deny them all together. Also, I wouldn't say that this method worked for a thousand years but how this and their increasingly rigid views and ties to the senate inevitable led to their demise. Yes the Clone Wars were the culmination but the Sith were working in the shadows and manipulating events for a thousand years as well where by the time the Clone Wars started the Jedi already lost b/c they're system made them incapable of adapting to the new threat., a previous comment said it pretty well, they were still expecting to fight the Sith out on the battle field while never realizing until the end that they were staring them in the face the entire time.

Makes a lot of sense when you put it like this. His order started with only the most powerful canidets because he couldn't do the blood test stuff the previous orders did, only seek out those who were so powerful they manifested powers without training. Then those top tier canidets had kids, mostly with each other, producing legacy children which meant instead of constantly looking for people who randomly 'mutated' Force connections his Praxium ensured those connections and genes were passed on and cultivated.

The je'daii tried using a complete balance throughout most of their history untill the first schism where alot of the more dark side members went full extremist. This schism caused the death of the majority of their dark side specialising masters of the order, and we know that over the thousand years between the exile of the surviving dark jedi and the discovery of the republic, the je'daii order transitioned into the jedi order. What Im trying to say is that I've always interpreted it as Luke's order being like the je'dii order during the transitional period, where all members focused far more on the light side with them being expected to be moderately educated on the dark side, and presumably at best, moderately proficient in the simpler and most common dark side techniques.

I would also say that Luke sorta did did something the Zeison Sha had done, who were a line of Jedi that were separated from the main order during the Major Sith Wars of the Old Republic, but technically before the two games. They believed in having families and that emotional control was better than emotionally walling yourself. While they had their own Academy on a Barren Wasteland they made suitable through sheer stubbornness and the Force to live, they also believed that Families should have the choice in how they train their children, so a lot of Zeison Sha were just homeschooled.

I'll go along with this. When i learned in the movies that the Jedi had been kidnapping toddlers for centuries, I was appalled, the Order deserved to fall. It was an abomination. Luke spent two (three?) years between New Hope and ESB just trying to get a grip on his new powers, and using them to help his friends and the rebellion. He did it out of service, loyalty and love. The same reason he risked his life to rescue Han, Leia and Chewie. (And he was mostly successful. He almost died, but Leia and Chewie escaped, and while captured Han was at least alive. That wouldn't have happened unless, and until, Vader thought Luke was "in the bag.") Owen and Beru deserve a lot more credit than they've been given. Luke must have been a handful, but they raised him right. And that love carried him through the rest of his life.

Thanks for keeping up the lore of us old fans who read the books pre Disney blasphemy..my take is Luke understood yin and yang. The balance of light and dark, good and evil. As well as certain points of view.

My personal theory is that the Jedi bloodlines - and Luke's Jedi in general - weren't powerful necessarily because of a genetic advantage, but for two reasons: 1. They weren't taught from an early age to essentially isolate themselves, and they instead connected to each other. There's the Master-Padawan bond, of course, which helps with education, but it's only the thinnest edge of the potential. We see how this can explicitly help when Jedi pool their powers, but also implicitly, with the likes of Joruus C'baoth, who grew increasingly powerful the more minds he connected to. This has strong parallels with Marvel anti-hero/anti-villain Bennet du Paris a.k.a. Exodus, a 'merely' immensely powerful psychic mutant whose power levels fluctuate based on how much he believes in himself, and as he later discovers, how much others believe in him. So, when he's firm in his convictions and has relatively few followers etcetera, he is 'merely' one of the most powerful psychics on Earth. In one possible future where he's backed by a trillions strong mutant theocracy, he's a cosmic entity with a Phoenix host sitting on his shoulder. I believe the same principle applies with Force bonds. We also see the explicitly darker variant on it in Darth Nihilus, who forms Force Bonds with ease to thousands of people at a time, enslaving them or draining them, becoming more and more powerful in the process. Vitiate, meanwhile, became as powerful as he was by enslaving and draining 8000 Sith Lords. The Jedi Exile, Meetra Surik, has a similar if more positive knack for Bond creation, and as it's nurtured by Kreia, she becomes more and more exceptionally powerful. Luke's Jedi Order is all about openness and the importance of connections, and many of his students are adults, so naturally connect to people. The result is a virtuous cycle. 2. Something similar applies to Jedi blood descendants, but not necessarily because of their blood. We know, scientifically, that pregnancy and the early years are absolutely crucial for cognitive and physical development - a nutrient deficit then can have major knock on effects later on. The reverse, proper nourishment, can have startling effects. Think of a Force-Bond between a Force-sensitive child and a Force-sensitive parent as nourishment, almost an umbilical cord. They're exposed to the Force, and an intuitive understanding of more complex stuff that their parents are performing, through that bond from an early age. If they're raised around other Jedi, they might latch on to other adoptive relatives of a sort, forming more bonds, developing more.

The fact that Disney screwed this up is just...... good freaking gravy. They wanted to be original so god damn bad that they ended up nearly running Star Wars into the ground. Honestly, I'd rather we get no more live action movies for another decade and instead, animations of the novels.

100% agree! I noticed a trend in the fall of different Jedi Orders long ago. They all were ignorant in their teachings by taking very young children and teaching them as if the dark side either doesn't exist or should avoid absolutely anything and everything that could even remotely hint to the dark side. I really do hope the sequels get retconned and we see the true Luke Skywalker, or at the very least, see the Jedi of his era. Jedi who love and marry each other, have children, and work together, even using the dark side at times, to stop a bigger threat. Sadly, until Disney gets their act together, we're never going to get that.

Yeah, well done. Hard to argue with any of the points made in the video. I think another reason is because Luke was such an adept learner with infinite potential. People like Luke not only learn quickly but never stop learning. So instead of adopting a one-size-fits-all academy like previous Jedi orders, he's able to implement adaptive teaching methods that, as you said, are able to bring out the full potential in his students.

I agree completely on what you were saying in the video Luke's Jedi order was right by using love and attachment but not but not too much to go to the dark side I think it's a good idea but I also agree what you were saying they were very powerful in Jeddah and Luke's Jedi order but that's just my opinion as a Star wars fan.

This is a very intriguing conversation, and most of what I wanted to say has already been said here, which made it even more interesting. Ive been a martial artist for a very long time, and open mindedness towards techniques and training methods has been a big deal forever. When placed under this light, it almost seems like the clone wars era was...sort of lazy? Perhaps esoteric even, they had all that information, and I'll say they were the more "learned" Jedi, and yet, Luke's didn't have all the information that the previous order had. I'm curious if he taught the formal styles of saber combat, or if they were feeling out new ones, also curious about their kyber crystal quest...was it the same or different? I really appreciate this topic and conversation, it has succeeded by leaps and bounds of raising new questions and keeping the lore alive and interesting. Thank You!

There needs to be an entire saga on Luke’s era and order. To be able to see all of what you just explained played out thru a movie timeline or even a show would be PHENOMENAL! And all they had to do was stick to the story’s already made!

I feel as if the Force reaches out in times like Luke and Revan to balance itself. Usually when the dark side and the light are having push and pull for dominance. In the time of Luke and the new republic so few Jedi exist that the Force channels through those who do have abilities making them more powerful. Possibly this can also effect non force users in these times giving them moments of “Force Sensitivity”

One could have two schools of thought or two points of argument on Luke's training. One that he was training Jedi as they always should have been even since perhaps the days when the Jedi Order first began or two that Luke was perhaps making Grey Jedi in a way as well because some would study or know the ways of the Sith and perhaps even some were able to harness those abilities as well without going dark like some Jedi in the past had.

To draw a direct comparison: 3 out 4 members of the Jedi council during the Clone Wars were immediately taken out by Palpatine in a 4v1 fight. Saba Sebatyne, a single master from Luke's council, fought and defeated an avatar of Abaloth, who is essentially a force GOD, 1v1. *After* she fought through lost tribe sith and a horde of force zombies to reach her.

I'm not an expert, but I always thought that Yoda's order around the Clone Wars era was the most powerful, at least combat wise, which might still be the case but I suppose that could be a numbers advantage when compared to Luke's order. But what you said makes sense, the average for Luke's order would probably be higher than Yoda's.

It's not a complaint. As a book, it's a great story. The High Republic, Alphabet Squadron, Aftermath, New Dawn are all great stories. Kyp Durron is the MVP in Luke Skywalker’s NJO!!! Kyp is easily my second favorite Jedi behind Luke he is a edgy aggressive badarse and somewhat of a Maverick especially during the Jedi Academy Trilogy and even on to the Yuuzhan Vong Wars in the NJO Series a really relatable character character for me especially if he is on my top list above Obi Wan and Yoda whom sit at my 3 and 4 spot, Kyp Durron is that awesome just behind Luke Skywalker so those are my top 4 Jedi in SW!!! Also other great NJO Jedi who need a shoutout as some of my favorites Kyle Katarn, Corran Horn, Mara Jade, Raynar Thul, Cilghal, Saba Sebatyne, Tahiri Veila, Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus!!!
