"The Strand" in Liverpool is the road which used to run along the riverside. The same as The Strand in London, a long way from the Thames but the route shows the old banks of the Thames.

Sorry to nit pick , but thats the town hall behind St Georges church . It's looking in the opposite direction of Castle St . Customs house would have been to the back of the photographer .

I never knew that the folly existed until I stumbled across this video. I am not sure how well it approximates the original Liverpool Castle or the conjectural plan drawn up by Edward Cox in 1892 (166 years after its remains were finally demolished). Out of interest, prior to the building of Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts there was an emergency archaeological excavation in South Castle Street during the summer of 1976 (which I volunteered on for couple of days). One of the aims was to try to find evidence for the medieval road, which it failed to do. A full report of this excavation can be found on the website of the Merseyside Archaeological Society via a link on its 'About the Society' page.

Just come across your video. I, too have done a video, 3 in fact, covering the castle and the extensive gardens with all their follies. I live in Horwich, and this area is my daily dog walk. Very well done.

Great stuff 👏 have you ever thought of doing a similar thing about the old zoo at Eastham County Park and history of the park .

That’s nuts! I never knew Leverhulme went to such folly to build….well….a folly! Having said that, this is a fascinating find and something I’ve never heard of in my years wondering about the previous landscapes of the area. Leverhulme clearly went to great lengths to recreate the ruin, but do we know what plans he worked from? We know the stone from the original castle was recycled into other buildings in the city after it was demolished so Leverhulme must have had to work from old paintings for detail in the masonry. If this folly has any sort of accuracy to the original ruin, he must have spent serious hours (or paid others) to research the structure. What is curious though, is why it’s been seemingly overlooked as a reference point for the history of the city, the castle still being an objective of mystery today as it was in the 20th century.

Thanks for that. Well presented. I am a little confused about the ruins in Lever Park: was this a copy of the ruins of the original Liverpool Castle, did Lord Lever's construction deteriorate to what we see now?

As far as I know, it was meant to be a replica of the original Ruins, not the entire castle, but due to his death, it wasn't even completed to that level. It was that information that was missed and we had to republish the video.

What i've read suggests that the project was unfinished due to his death? Not sure about further deterioration since then.

Not the original masonry,i don't think? That was long gone by then. Fresh stone from similar geological source?
