"Artistically it's the idea that you don't have to say everything. It can remain subtext." Exactly that is the reason what Mad Men made so special for me. The show leaves so much space for adding the pieces together to the audience itself, in order to create your own story and thoughts around it just the way you want it to be. And this is also why Don Draper appears to be one of the most complex tv show characters because you never really know what he thinks and feels exactly.
@goodfeller2
@goodfeller2 7 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting way to think about it. We are all living vicariously through Don Draper. I believe you made another good point about character. Letting us fill in what Don is thinking is almost similar in a way that you think about reading a book. Yet it's a very unique in its own sense since it's the only show like it on TV. I very much want to watch sopranos. Have you seen it? I know its partially written and produced by Matthew Weiner so, I'm assuming it has a similar vibe to Mad Med
@basedboi3956

leomessiful this. Just finished the show today and it’s amazing what a simple look or gaze can tell you about what a character is thinking. You could always tell Don was about to pursue a woman just based on the one second the camera stays on his face right before the scene changes. Little details all along the way

Best show ever. And it's not the show that overstayed its welcome. It's just that AMC dragged it out too much. A year between every season and 2 years before the 5th, and 2 years for season 7 to finish. People's patience got shorter, because it's a slow-burn drama. If you watch it without so much expectation and anticipation and just binge, you'll realize it's consistently great throughout. One of the all time greats. (I personally consider it THE Great American Drama, not that it matters).

It's like wine, it gets better and better with time, but in this case with each season. And that isn't a minor thing to say for a tv show with 7 seasons, since just a few can claim the same. Maybe breaking bad, and thats a big maybe; however we will have to see what happens with Fargo which is doing great, and the same for westworld.

I would have to agree 110%, that and the attention to detail of the set design is what initially drew me into the show. Of course it was the sharp writing and great acting that kept my attention. If I'm not mistaken the costume designer had won a couple of awards for her work on this show. I AM OBSESSED!

The Don/Peggy dynamic was one of the most interesting relationships in the show. Peggy was the only person (man or woman) that Don seemed to regard as his equal in talent. He was very demanding of her because he knew she was talented and was trying to bring out her best. She never let him down and he respected her for it.

One of my favourite scenes is when Pete Campbell is sitting at a table with a man he doesn't know, and the man asks him -"so, what do you do in an ad agency all day"? And Pete proceeds to really praise the man's tie, leaving him very flattered, and he answers -"this is what I do all day". Freaking brilliant!

What i love most about this show is the pacing. Very few show has that element where you feel like everything just falls into place naturally without effort and without losing that surprise element. I found Better Call Saul has that match in terms of the pacing - slow but you kinda get the justification on why something is happening - the flow of information is subtle not all at once. It’s just perfect writing

I'm currently re-watching Mad Men for the first time since the show ended. Re-watching after 6 years only seems to make you realize just how incredible this show really is. I've been amazed at just how captivating it is, right from the beginning, and you get totally invested in the characters and their stories as they are progressing through the 60s. Even characters that you don't even like (Pete), you're still heavily interested and mesmerized by their story as it's moving along. It's definitely in the top 5 tv shows of all time for me.

not sure if yall realize but time tends to golden memories. It is a drama show. The time and space around is dramatic. Not sure which part of the show you liked especially but it is only natural that you want to live in a world which was CREATED so you would. Dons lifestyle? That would be even more glamorous. Peggys early stages of her career? Near impossible in that time since people were a lot more caucious about having women as authorities, especially a secretary. Glamorization of alcohol and cigarettes? Well... The authorities and the society as a whole were a lot more unhonest, biased, shallow and far more easily bribeable. Also as a young man you would constantly live in ”fear” of being drafted. No hate, just giving my own rational point of view at this point, and im interested to hear which part did you like especially.

The one thing that really disappointed me about this show, having basically lived through this time myself, was the almost complete lack of music. That should have been in the background of almost every TV show car radio, interior shot, and coming from every kid walking down the street with a transistor radio to his ear. The music was everywhere and it was huge. Maybe was too expensive for TV, but it's certainly missed in its absence.

I finally watched Mad Men in 2023 and the part that is so realistic to me about all the subtext, is that it is portraying a generation of people who even in real life truly did not talk to eachother, a generation who wore absolutely nothing on their sleeve

There are much better dramas out there I would recommend checking out The Wire, Sopranos, Fargo, True Detective and the suggested shows that go along with them

I love Mad Men, but a show like no other? It's a show very much like The Sopranos (obviously the creator wrote for The Sopranos, so it's not a surprise) The first 2 or 3 seasons felt like a huge shout out to the Sopranos. There were scenes that were blatantly copied from the Sopranos. For godsakes their is a scene where Dom tells a guy to take his hat off. That is one of the most famous Tony scenes. Or the episode that starts with Tony passed out in the kitchen. Then they do a rewind effect back a few scenes to show what happened to him. There is episode that starts with Dom passed out in the same position. Then they go back to days earlier and proceed with the episode to show what happens that leads him to the being passed out and beat up looking. The writing style that made Mad Men so good was very much like Sopranos. Some of the most emotional scenes revolving around Dom were just like Tonys scenes. I recently watched the scene on YT where Tony is in a coma and in his dream sits down on a bed in a hotel and looks out the window. A person wrote "This is very Mad Men-ish" Well that episode came out before Mad Men was made, so what does that tell you?

KrayzieBoneThe GOAT sorry,but I feel Mad Men was better executed when it comes to cinematography, costume design,photography, etc. And I think we could relate more to Mad Men's characters because they are not as exotic as mafia, even though some plot points feel the same. I believe Don's and Tony's internal problems stem from differrent things

Missed opportunity, you could have done so much more with this video. So much to dissect and delve into Vox than a measly 2 minutes. Also I know your graphics skills and experts you have who should have dedicated a lot more to the masterpiece that is Mad Men.

A masterpiece, racism and some stuff in there but the show is a masterpiece the phone rings, the no soundtrack vibe, the sound of the atmosphere, the pro/cooperate vibes makes me feel I have been in them Offices making moves absolute ✔️✔️💯 about to rewatch it from the beginning for the second time, I have been feeling like Don until season 6
