It's actually true, nobody knows how to play pokemon. Even in championships, they pretend they know how to play pokemon, but really it's whoever has the most convincing explanation for why they win who wins.

One time I met a guy who swore he knew how to play Pokemon, and he even agreed to teach me! I sat at my lgs for hours and he never showed. After a whole day, I decided to cut my losses and leave. On my way home, I stopped at a red light and happened to glance at the car next to me. It was a black SUV with two creepy looking guys with suits, sunglasses, and the most blank expressions I'd ever seen. In the back though, someone had their face against the window. I could've sworn it was the Pokemon card guy! He was banging and yelling something, but I couldn't hear it or read his lips. Then the light turned green. I went forward; the black SUV went left. I think of that day often. How many countless games of the Pokemon TCG could I have enjoyed if only things had been a little different? So I search and I research and I find the clues. Like a jigsaw puzzle that's been scattered by a playful kitten, I know it can still be solved if only I were to find all of the pieces. Some are easy to find, some are hard, and some are hidden where I may yet have thought to look. I shall find them. Although I do not yet know who those men driving that SUV work for nor do I know where the took the Pokemon guy, one day I will. I will know their secrets, so that I may know his.

When I tried to learn Pokemon, some strangers at the lunch table helped me, "helped" me, all the did was late their Pokemon card face down and mine, IDK what was the deal is on who's the winner, I forgot, but I lost a Zapdose because according to them, you lose, you lose a card. I actually lost 2 but I cried to get my last one back, today, I want to go back to that day, a duel them with my Pokemon deck I have now, cause now I know how to play, if the have no deck, I'll flex mine, and teach them a lesson to not play the loss game with little kids. They laughed that day, but I really want them to try to laugh when they play 2 games, Yugioh is one, I know it better now than back then, way better than any other card game at some extent, it's basically my zone, despite my loss rate (I'm not rich so I play Cyber Dragons s best I can), or my game I just made, my own TCG. TL:DR Jerks at the lunch table stole my Zapdose in a made up game that they tricked me into playing just to grab my cards and bully the small kids, and these were higher grade kids too.

You know, the resource-based question is actually pretty valid. Energy in Pokémon can easily break the "only 1 charge per turn" rule with Pokémon Abilities and some Support cards. That's why you see a small number of energies compared to Magic in competitive decks. Pokémon then becomes a game of managing the units themselves, rather than managing the energies. Pokémon being the first japanese TCG establishes this as a trend in future JCGs such as MonColle, Yugioh, Digimon 1999 and so on, and MtG as the first TCG establishes resource management as a more prevalent trend in western TCGs.
@dracon2963
@dracon2963 Жыл бұрын
I feel that’s a rather flawed argument as someone who has played both Pokémon and magic for years now. While pokemon does have a few cards that “break” the energy rule they are few and far between such as frosmoth only applying to water energy’s and supporters only being once per turn. I have seen so few Pokémon decks that run energy breaks that unless you go to the really high tiers with arceus decks you don’t really get any energy break cards outside of a supporter here and there. Compare this to magic the gathering where I have seen consistency in almost every deck I have play against competitive or not that uses many other ways to gain a infinite amount of mana or boost their mana production by a lot through combos. There is also the point of how in magic lands untap each turn which gives you more mana each turn effectively giving you more of a resource often without requiring a rebuilding of it in the state of a boardwipe or a removal in most cases. Compare this to Pokémon where if you attach your energy to a Pokémon and that Pokémon dies, you can’t get that energy back unless you have a specific card to get that back and you also have to re attach all of the energy’s making it so that you have to manage a ever depleting resource that is hard to refill rather than a resource that just refills at the start of every turn.
@tiozuradasexatas6754
@tiozuradasexatas6754 Жыл бұрын
@@dracon2963 I see all of this you wrote not as opposition to the idea I wanted to show, but rather a complement. Mana in MtG is the source of all things while Energy in Pokémon works in function of Pokémon, so the resource management in this game is investing in the units already on play rather than investing on the things you want to play. This is what I address as "unit management".

Honestly not even false information. You get way more energy cards than you could possibly want, EVEN if you just buy boosters and maybe those metal boxes and no display stands etc, probably more than MTG but not sure. AND NO ONE knew how to play Pokémon, the furthest I got was playing some demo game CD on the PC that taught you how to play and I somehow never connected it with how you would actually play and use the cards. Everyone just collected them and compared the coolest ones and traded. I also traded some rare card, don't remember which, for like 100 oddishes and bellsprouts, dumb kid me went like "damn, that's a good trade". It probably wasn't. And the main way I used the cards to play was roleplaying as the characters, using them as dolls or something with my little sister. Good times, although I cringe when I think about the time we cut the cards in different shapes but it was fun back then.

Yes Energy cards are similar to Mana in that they power the things you can do. In Pokémon you can attach one energy per turn similar to magics one mana per turn, but you attach it to a Pokémon. They power up the Pokémon to do certain attacks but they are also spent if you want to retreat the Pokémon depending on the retreat cost. A difference between the two is that when a Pokémon gets knocked out, everything goes in the discard pile including the energies unlike magic where mana is on the battlefield the whole game. I really enjoy both Pokémon and Magic and will play either or depending on the mood I’m in.

Magic The Gatherings Resource Card/ Land Cards/ Mana Cards have more detail on them and each Forest, Mountain, Swamp, Plains and Island cards can have different pictures on them, a unique location if you will, but all the Pokemon Energy Cards look all the same, basically so bland and boring to look at. With Forest Cards you could get scenes of beautiful forests on them, area deep in a forest where you could see flowers or glowing mushrooms amongst the trees, you could even have a river or a pond amongst the trees when it comes to Forest cards.

When I was little I always wanted to play Pokémon cards seriously and no one ever wanted to play with me because they couldn’t read the rules. The entire time the game had really horrendous and unfun rules.

Nope, when I was a kid I did not know how to play the Pokemon Game Game, it was only when I reached my mid to late 20s that I learned how to play the Pokemon Card Game and I only played it a few times and that was it, I’m now in my mid 30s.

Another reason Pokémon is bad compared to mtg is the end game goal is less clear. In Pokémon you are targeting the Pokémon instead of the player. In mtg it’s suggested you need to take out player, and the creatures are an obstical rather than a needed thing to take out the other player.

I used to play in pokemon tournaments when i was like 10 at my local LGS and it was pretty fun. That being said, MTG is 10,000% a better tcg gameplay wise than pokemon. MTG is the best designed game in general.

Pokemon doesn't have double sided cards. That's literally twice the cards as pokemon has and that's what it's bad.

Apparently, when he said, "Nobody knows how to play Pokémon.", nobody included himself, because he claimed energy cards were useless, even though they are important in playing the game.
