McDonald's is synonymous with fast-food in many parts of the world, but there is one country where it's failed to capture national attention. Iceland celebrated the fast-food chain when it entered in 1993, but a global economic collapse during the next 15 years forced McDonald's to exit the Nordic region. Watch this video to find out more.

Champs Elysees, one of the best-known avenues in Paris, features two McDonalds, Burger King, and several other burger joints. I guess the French and customers around the world must be masochists in patronizing American fast food places so often rather than liking the product. My experience with animosity towards American fast food is that it's tied in with anti-Americanism in general. It's supposed to advertise the European ultra-left street creds against the big bad America.

The reason I heard was that the Icelandic proprietor quit going along with the franchises requirements to make the food exactly the way it was done on America. They wanted to include other things to offer the locals and it turned into a terrible mess. It was said, too, that the home office didn't receive their agreed to cut from Iceland and the man running the show at Mc D's only wanted the start up cash from America to help him set up a restaurant that he would then intentionally stiff them and do what he wanted and sell what he wanted, never planning on keeping it a McDonald's. So when America told him he had broken their contract he basically told them to screw off. When things got that bitter he told them, "Ok, sue me! " But I don't think they bothered and just went away. Is any of this true ? I'd really like to know.
@Dwightstjohn-fo8ki
@Dwightstjohn-fo8ki Жыл бұрын
Franchise requirements and the franchise contract is usually written........by Miami lawyers. It's pretty tight. If the owner "defaulted" on his franchise agreement it's on him, but the MCDonald's head office COULD have redacted the contract and then sold it to someone else, or kept the stores open at a loss, to keep the "name" in Iceland. they obviously chose not to., at that time.

I know, it sounds strange, but it's a fact. Things have moved on and it's safe to say that no one actually misses it, but think of it as our time in the spotlight. Never pictured Iceland as being compatible to American fast-food culture this was new to them and in consequence didn't like it and the fact how everything is high-priced makes it even harder to keep business up in a daily basis. Personally I don't blame them I understand that feeling of not trying something different in your tradition lifestyle and be personally against ideological globalism. Either way regardless to me i love having different kind of restaurants in my own state.

One thing i have noticed with Americans. perhaps they dont see it themself. is driving long distances for supermarket (wallmart,kmart,costco and others. try to save up few dollars on shopping but mainwhile they drive cars with large engine which waste alot of gasline . i dont get it . spending on fuel from your own bugdet and try to save same few dollars on supermarket. complaining about prices samewhere else in the world how its expensive mainwhile in US if you buy for food +plus tip is not so cheap as people might, i bet overall US is not as cheap as it seems. compare to EU countries. As you go northern in Europe . more expensive its going to be.

Icelander here currently living in Japan, I'm an exchange student living in dorms and often hang out with the Americans and its ridiculous sometimes refuse to eat out or go get a tiny McDonald burger just cuz the food is too "expensive". One refused to go to a restaurant where she couldn't get anything for 10$ or less. Here I'm often eating out (too often) but I'm getting meals here for 10-20$ (food and drink usually alcoholic) and same meal in Iceland would cost up to 50$ if not more. Japan is also a island and has to import a lot, to me the strawberries here are cheap costing around 4-5$ a basket, same in Iceland would be 6-10$ even if locally grown. The Americans stutter at those prices. Don't seem to realise that not everything can be grown locally etc. In Iceland 6$ burger is something I would be very suspicious of because a good gas station burger is 7-8$ 10-12 if a a full meal fries and a drink.

Iceland is a rich country with high wages and some of the best living standards in the world, $6 for fast food is nothing to most who live and work there. America meanwhile has armies of poor people who are paid minimum wage or don't work, so cheap low quality food is very popular, I would even say mainstream culture. The fact that only 3 branches of Mcdonalds were opened shows that Iceland did not love their food. Quality is low and most people living there earn a good income...I am sure most were willing to pay more for a better meal, except during the 2008 financial crash when everyone in the country got screwed over.

We have no McDonalds in Greenland at all. In the 1990s local business people in Nuuk (our capital) wanted to open a McDonalds franchise here, but McDonalds didn’t believe that it could be a success because our population in the city at the time was only around 13000 inhabitants. Now we have gone above 19,300 so the6 told the no. We do have local burger joints and pizza joints, but no other well-known American brand names. Last year though, a Subway opened up, but I have yet to check it out. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Burger King here. I love the whopper…

McDonald's was NOT that busy or popular when it closed in 2009. Sure it had its customers but I used to work at a food court at a mall and we had McDonald's right across from us and during rush hours there were lines everywhere except at McDonald's. In the early 2000s they had a McDonalds in dontown Reykjavík which they closed due to lack of business (before the tourist boom)
