Why McLaren had to split with Daniel Ricciardo and what he wants to do next

Жыл бұрын

McLaren and Daniel Ricciardo have made it official that they will go their separate ways at the end of 2022, meaning the Australian leaves the team after two years of his original three-year deal.
Confirmation of the early split brings a long-running saga to an end that looked inevitable as Ricciardo and McLaren failed to spark his 2022 season into life.
McLaren will not announce his replacement immediately, although current Alpine reserve Oscar Piastri is expected to land that seat - assuming it is cleared by the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board that McLaren, rather than Alpine, has a valid 2023 F1 contract with the Formula 2 champion.

The part about him not being a technical driver is absolutely what cost him in the end. When he first moved to Mclaren, he didn’t even do much sim work in the MTC unlike lando who was there every day trying to understand the data. He should take some lessons from sainz, who makes up for what he lacks in absolute raw talent through technical prowess
@FreddyMacT
@FreddyMacT Жыл бұрын
when sainz moves to new teams, he moves right next to the headquarters and spends his days with the engineers/mechanics and doing sims to get acquainted with the car. It's why he went from Renault to McLaren and then McLaren to Ferrari with little to no issues. He works hard. Daniel does not, Daniel has been living on talent but he slacks off more than most top drivers. He isn't technical, but he's also lackadaisical in his approach... it caught up to him now though.

Just competitively… if I was alpine I’d offer DR a 1 year deal with a low salary and big performance bonuses. That way you get a good deal and only 1 year if he doesn’t perform - but if he does both the team is rewarded with points etc and DR gets $ and a contract extension. You can sugar coat this any way you like but Ricciardo has not been performing at McLaren over the last year and a half,so therefore McLaren had no option but to get rid of him. If he'd been performing at the same level as Norris then McLaren would have finished 3rd in 2021 and be comfortably 4th this year.
@loblolly777
@loblolly777 Жыл бұрын
No question that DR has underperformed and I understand why McLaren needs to drop him. But if he had performed as well as Norris, McLaren would be comfortably 4th, and still a very long way off third. 2022 Norris has certainly performed much better than Ricciardo but significantly worse than 2021 Norris. A comfortable 4th is still a very long way off where Zac wanted the team to be. Lando is also underperforming and McLaren is a long way off where they should be. Change drivers all you like, but the reality is that McLaren's problems extend well beyond Danny Ric's performance and, unless there is some sneaky plan coming, changing drivers will fix little. Head of the mid field maybe, but a long way off a competitive threat to the top teams. The Piastri/Ricciardo side show is just a distraction and papering over some big cracks at McLaren.

The speed comparison chart between teammates was very interesting. He was basically faster than everyone, (even vettel) except for Max in the final two years at Red Bull. @KeenJT

Agreed, I think the car (RBR) was just a PERFECT match for his driving style - which enabled him to win so many races. However, the sign of a great racer is being able to come to terms with changes in cars - he hasn't. Kind of like checo this season for RBR. Same thing, start of the season the car was much more normalised and generic, but as we've moved on they have made the car front bias to suit max, a well known harder driving style and look, checo has fallen off.
@DonLee1980
@DonLee1980 Жыл бұрын
Danny is a good example why you shouldn't base on one seasonal change comparison, and call it a day. People saw his performance over Vettel in 2014 in a brand new car and regulations, and said, Vettel was over, and the praise for Danny was that he will be one of the all time greats. Of course, Vettel went over to Ferrari and got close to 2 titles and had plenty of racing left. Nobody thought Danny would be left behind in Mclaren like this, but I guess sometimes it's just the wrong synergy, wrong car, and wrong team. Put him in a top 3 team and he'd be a title contender again probably.

@@KeenJT And yet, it's easy to see over the past 15 years, that 'great racers' don't always 'come to terms' with just any car. Alonso? 2 WDC, then struggled with all sorts of uncompetitive cars. Vettel? 4 WDC, then the same problem Hamilton? 1WDC, then years of 'not coming to terms' with the cars that McLaren had for him, and when he move to Mercedes, all of a sudden, he's magically able to 'come to terms' with a different team's car? RB dropped the ball with DR in his last two seasons with him, he should have won more races but they were too pre-occupied with MV as #1. DR leaving RB and RB's failure to find a good replacement has forced RB to change how they treat the 2nd driver. Renault were not sure if they would even continue in F1, so hard to complain about a driver finding a ride elsewhere.

I’m really glad Andreas Seidel has taken responsibility on behalf of McLaren that it didn’t work out between them and Danny, because it is partly on them that they couldn’t make a car work to his liking. Seb Vettel showed clearly during his Red Bull years how having a car that suits your style to a T can go, and he struggled with cars that weren’t to his liking. The same could be said for Daniel (obviously he’s never had a championship worthy car tho).

It always struck me as incredible that he would struggle in non-F1 interviews to explain how the cars worked to the interviewers. His raw speed is unquestionable; he's got it. The problem seems to be that if things aren't working, he seems to lack the ability and understanding to use the technical analysis all the drivers get to adapt and stay faster than his teammate. Very frustrating. He seemed a perfect fit for the new generation of McLaren, which to me was a racing team again rather than the technology business it became under Dennis. I think McLaren really worked to make this work, too. Perhaps DR really is better suited to a series like Indy where the focus on racing rather than insanely fine margins plays to his natural talents.

He would struggle in an Indycar. They have been ground effects cars(like the 2022 F1 car) for the past 30 years. But in saying that, the mechanics there might know how make a car rotate better with less weight on nose, seeing that the Indycars braking ability is a bit less. So I could be wrong!

Rics downfall began with the unnecessary switch to Renault from the much more competitive Red Bull team. He went for the better salery instead of deciding for the better sportive challenge. This decision had an big impact onto his own capabilities as a driver, as the struggling Renault team, did not even give a glimpse of hope to fight for a win. Two podiums in two seasons are not enough to keep a sword like Dani Ric sharp.(As he is not at all an analytic driver, that just can deliver programmed processes. He is more of a natural instinctive driver.)

I have also long noticed that Daniel Ricardo uses his settings a lot less than other drivers. Some drivers will adjust their cornering settings they’re deaf and so on from corner to corner each lap often adjusting their settings 10 to 20 times a lab Ricardo does not do so he fiddles with his settings on his wheel maybe a couple times per lap and I’ve watched on boards of every driver every race as a gamer I just like to see what drivers are doing and how often they’re on their controls. I think this is something to do with Ricardo’s innate style he prefers to drive instinctively and naturally rather than mess with the settings and optimise everything to its limit

I don’t think any other driver has ever changed teams to a completely opposite style of car and got on well the first year. The difference in year two is that he doesn’t have the technical understanding that Vettel has to adapt. Doesn’t mean he’s a bad driver at all, imagine if you put Norris in the rb16b. He’d be spinning with the back end holding most of the strengths in the car. If anything this experience for ricciardo will make him faster next season if he races for alpine since he already has a fair amount of understanding for what he might need to do and won’t need to try as hard to adjust. Gasly got wrapped up in the technical aspect of his racing, which is why he was so bad at Red Bull. Ricciardo was forced into doing the same because of his racecraft, so in reality it probably isn’t just because he’s better with a completely different car-it’s a mental game he will never win. Anyone who thinks he doesn’t have it anymore is dead wrong, and I question your understanding of drivers’ preferred car strengths as a whole if you think that isn’t the main reason he struggles so much.

McLaren is data driven team and they need exceptional raw talented people with technical know how and they are very very serious people. It doesn't work for DR. Honestly he should go to Williams.
