Great share Doc, but let's not forget.....Defenders don't leak oil, they are only marking their territory!

Not sure who told you the harness should be changed every year? Mine has been running since 2003 without any problem, 130,000 miles and no oil in the ECU cable, I think there a lot of people repeating something they heard in the local pub! The diesel pressure unit is however something that will need changing, and the small oil drip is probably residual oil from the previous oil leak. Chris B.

Definitely invest in a small torque wrench. The TD5 has a lot of alloy parts held on with M6 and M8 bolts. Very easy to strip.

Doc, that oil leak could possibly be the remaining oil from the original oil leak still on the engine when you warned up the engine. I would keep checking the cardboard over the next few days, just to see if the oil leak gets any worse. Also, buy a torque wrench, and check the torque settings from a Defender manual for the rocker cover, and go around the studs on the cover again and check they are all set to the correct torque settings. It is possible you have not tightened them up enough, just it case you strip or break one off like you did originally. Good luck, Doc.

Check that the fuel pressure regulator isn't leaking fuel. It's very common for them to do so, I've lost count of how many I've changed over the years, it will require a complete new regulator assembly if it is leaking. The regulator lives on the back of the cylinder head on the right hand side, they're a bit fiddly to do if you haven't done one before but a lot easier on a Defender than a Disco 2.

There is no need to replace the whole unit, only the valve in the unit requires changing this refurbishing kit is available for circa £20. Chris B.

just add a few zip ties to make the gasket stay put on the cover while you fiddle with it upside down, once in position you can cut and remove the zips.

Honestly, oil in the injector harness, causing problems with the ECU, etc, is much LESS of a problem than people suggest. They see a bit of oil around the harness connector and panic.

Leak is fuel pressure regulator. Fiddly but easy enough. My prediction for the next videos in this series: -Notices oil level is rising / oil isn't going black. -Replaces injector seals (Oil still rising) -Discover that cylinder head has hairline crack around no 5 injector -replace cylinder head... Then swivels and seals, half shafts, wheel bearings, all the bushes, new rear quarter chassis and brakes.... Then it'll almost be a good car for a while!

It looks like your fuel pressure regulator is weeping. The diesel picks up the muck on the back of the engine and bell housing, and by the time it hits the floor, it is black. You can't always smell the diesel, and it just looks like a small oil leak. You can recondition the existing unit but a new one is only 100 quid. One thing to remember though, as well as ordering a new gasket, order a replacement (original) O ring. These sit between the block and regulator don't come with the unit and can sometimes be the cause of the leak.

There is another seal just below the rocket cover where the head joins together during assembly.. check that and put some RTV sealant on it

Is it leaking from the bottom of the bell housing(small hole) if so and it could be the rear crank seal.

There’s also a wire that can rub against the chassis which in the wet causes it to short and the Rover go into limp mode. Mine had 250000 miles on the clock, but after an EGR delete, TD5 Alive remap, and bigger custom turbo it went like a train!

Definitely invest in a small torque wrench next time. The setting on these bolts is crazy low. You'll never be able to guess with feel. Even with the torque wrench you doubt they are actually tight enough, but trust the repair maunal.

Looks great! I'm keen to follow and buy one soon, and gently update / refurb. You mention it was "so cheap" - what sort of base price did you end up with? Do you have a total budget in mind for the plans for this car? I know you were refreshingly open about the Def90 costs, and I'm keen to get a sense of current pricing and ideas for budgets for doing something similar to you. Thanks again - I've really enjoyed all your content, and keen to see this build unfold

check that the leak is not diesel, it could be the fuel pressure regulator, and just dragging oil down with the diesel.
