Clay, you are by far the best instructor on youtube. I have having trouble overpowering with my right hand, I am going to try this out. I always love the drills that you have, e.g. 100 times this, 100 times that. I think this is most important to create muscle memory and can be done mostly at home for me. I have also subscribed to your lag vid, brilliant ! Thanks

One of your best clips. I work on this every week and do my best to drive the left shoulder up and behind me, clearing that area for the right hand to go down the line at the target. Most people haven't much of a clue about the info here but it's a good one.

I recently figured this out on my own and it made a great deal of difference. By really gripping it lightly in my right hand I stopped hitting it fat and increased my distance as well. That along with making a good weight shift to my left foot at the start of the downswing has really improved my game.

Great video. If anyone is shanking or hitting fat/deep divots you may want to try to hold the club with solid left hand pressure and very - very light RIGHT hand pressure. I noticed my body was staying in good position but i was over extended towards the ball hard with my right arm/hand. I first started by putting only my right ring and middle finger on the club and using the index as a guide (almost no pressure with the index). Try that out people who are shanking or slamming into the ground because the right hand is overpowering

Clay, I really like your explanation/idea of turning the butt end of the club back up once around the right hip area. It really makes a lot of sense to me seeing YOU do it but when I try this it just translates into either feeling like 1) my left arm is chicken winging or 2) feeling super "bunched up"in the arms/hands, both as a result of trying to pull the butt end back upwards.. any ideas here, because I'd really like to get this feeling engrained? Thanks man!

Hi YakMan, you want to keep the right hand pretty passive. Think of it like shooting a basketball. If you're right handed then you will shoot with the right hand while your left hand guides the ball. It’s odd to me that the swing seems easiest to use the lead arm as the dominant for the swing. The lead arm for most players is the non-dominant hand of the player. It’s strange the non-dominant hand should dominate the swing.

@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 6 жыл бұрын
HI Bobby, sorry to hear you had to have that done. I think you'll still be able to grip the club. It's likely going to feel insecure of a while because you're used to having that security of your thumb there. I imagine the pad of your right hand will serve as more security now. It may even help you if you're a caster. It will be more difficult to cast without being able to put pressure into the club with the thumb. Best of luck. ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi Teacher. My question is: Do the PGA golfers using the right hand at the very last moment when releasing the club? It might play as a piston to push the club going further with higher speed? i would suggest to everyone watching this, do not make your body move before the club hits the ball. his suggestion that you are pulling up with your shoulder and moving your hit is a very hard exercise and you shouldn't be doing that until you hit balls everyday for a couple of years. keep your body still and don't move your head. you will enjoy the game much more hitting the ball straight then hitting it another 20 yards and looking for your ball in the bush. just my opinion.

Clay - because we're right handed I don't think you realize just how much the right hand is helping. The long drivers all push with right hand at the bottom of swing and into follow thru. I have spoken with 4 WLD competitors and they all told me the same thing. "The right hand either slows the swing down or speeds it up." Since we know that one-armed longest drive competitors hit the ball 240 - 280 yards, the right hand MUST be helping any golfer who hits the ball over 275 yards, period. I have been testing this at the range for the past couple months and I've gained 12 - 15 mph on my driver, 8 - 10 mph on irons and more penetrating ball flight, especially with irons.

In his book "How I Play Golf" Tiger Woods describes the right arm, or as I like to say since I am a lefty-the "nongloved arm"-as the speed arm. Meaning when he gets close to impact it becomes more active to add clubhead speed. I started consciously thinking of this during my swing and I can say I am hitting farther.

Be Better Golf and Tony Luczak would disagree completely with this. To them, it's the exact opposite: a right arm/hand dominated swing. Their feel is almost no left hand whatsoever. Gotta love coaches who teach "systems." There is more than one way to swing a golf club.
@jacobr4558
@jacobr4558 5 жыл бұрын
That may be what they describe but it isn't what actually happens. In order for the right hand to go through fast the top of the club has to slow down somewhere. You cant drag the handle through with your right AND have speed. Its one or the other. The club is a lever that must pivot itself. That only happens from the top of the club slowing. The right hand can't truly slow the top of the club as it is on the lower end of the grip.
