Personally I feel like this is the whole reason most Amateurs including myself have trouble. This will also eliminate the fat shot due to casting with a dominant right arm. Great video

Thank you thank you thank you! This has changed my game. No tension in my hands arms and shoulders. I now can feel the lag that I create and can feel where the club head is at impact with effortless resistance. I’m hitting it straighter and further. I feel like I should pay you for this! Thank you.

Ben Hogan recommend this in his 5 lessons not to leave the trail/right hand passive or non dominant in his swing; but, so he could feel the pushing/throwing power of ' 3 right hands' as he allowed his passive lead hand and passive lead arm elbow to rotate the lead arm to the finish of his swing. At least that the way I like to do it and see him swinging his club. Of course as he also said he (very very)briefly started his downswing with his lead knee and hip. Cheers.

@@marklynd2039 Hi Mark. I feel that the downswing is led by the left side and the left arm. I don't even think about my right side. The first move at the top of my backswing is putting pressure on my left foot. The second move is a pulling feeling with my left arm. The left arm at this point feels like a solid rod lever that swings down goes through the ball and keeps going on line with the target. Yes I am sure there is some right arm right hand power in the swing but the downswing is led by the left side and left arm. This has made a very consistent and powerful swing for me for decades. My putting stroke is totally left arm. I found this to be the most accurate stroke for me. Mark to get a good picture of how the left side controls the downswing I would recommend that you check out PGA Pro Wally Armstrong's teachings on YT. Hit em far and straight Mark!

Hi Chuck! I've Just watch your video today! This was a HA HA moment for me! It was kind of hard for me to get acustomed to pull the left arm instead of pushing with my right arm, which i've been doing all my life, but now that's in my muscle memory, i hit the ball longer and straighter like never before, and with less effort..so if you are still active on KZfaq...i just wanna say: THANK YOU CHUCK!!!

I am going to try to slide my right hand up more, so 4 and 5 finger are overlaying the left hand, and only the index and middle finger are on the club. That seems to help get the right hand out of it a lot.

Great tip I played all 18 holes with thumb and index finger off of the club and the ball was going longer and straighter. Thanks so much previously everything went left, I can't slice at all. It would help to know how to transition back to having the thiumb and index finger on the club in a more passive manor.

Would this fault also cause a snap hook and body slide. I love my transition when I am only using my left arm. I'm right handed. But when I put my right arm in to the swing I get a big slide and hands flip. Which causes a snap hook.

I totally disagree with this portrayal as I believe the dominant hand (right for right handed players) is the single most most important source of power in the strike. One caveat - as long as the right handed golfer isn't flipping , i.e., letting the clubhead out race the hands or closing the clubhead prior to impact. Keeping the hands ahead of the clubhead at impact both lessens the loft and better compresses the golf ball. But I do realize some people do work better with the lead hand/arm pulling. Whatever works best for you is correct.

Robert Pate Hogan did as much harm as he did good with his book. I often wonder if he didn't deliberately mislead the readers by his contradictory statements regarding the right hand. Yes he talked about keeping the thumb and forefinger off the club (giving the impression that he was advocating a passive right hand/arm) yet he then muddies the waters on page 101 where he says " As far as applying power goes, I wish that I had three right hands" ! Leading to generations of golfers (myself included) believing there must be a magic moment where Hogan applied power with his right hand. On page 99 he says "On a full shot you want to hit the ball as hard as you can with your right hand. But this is only half the story. HIT THE BALL AS HARD AS YOU CAN WITH BOTH HANDS. The left is a power hand, too. If you hit hard with only the right and let the left go to sleep, you will not only lose much valuable power, you also will run into all the errors that result when the right hand overpowers the left. YOU MUST HIT AS HARD WITH THE LEFT AS WITH THE RIGHT. " No wonder golf is such an enigma. Great players do not necessarily great teachers make.

Well, Bobby Jones, among other greats, also “felt” his left side controlling the swing. For you “normal” (some people are ambidextrous) right handers, can you 1) sign your name with your left? 2) eat comfortably with your left? 3) play ping pong with your left? 4) hit a stone with the end of a yardstick as well with your left as with your right hand? It’s counterintuitive and counterproductive. What in the world makes you think you can hit a tiny golf ball with a 45” stick better with your left hand? Admittedly, left dominance was how I was taught but for many people, it’s wrong. It does allow you to feel a swinging action and alleviates the problems of an OVERACTIVE right hand but the right hand gives you the finesse to hit draws, fades, low, high, etc. Killing the dominant right side is a beginner or high handicap piece of advice. If you’re right handed, that’s your “smart” hand. Learn how to use it properly and like Hogan who welcomed 3 right hands for power, you’ll find it easier to get to a low single or scratch handicap level. I’m 65 and found right hand control teachers on KZfaq only 4 years ago. 38 years of being a 7 hc now down to a 3 but so many years of pulling with the left rears it’s ugly head from time to time on the course and I can still shoot high 80s. This left-right debate is a 200+ year old point of contention and some people including tour pros play with left hand control but if you’re right handed and can’t break 80, you owe it to yourself to seek right hand control teachers (there’s more than I ever thought was out there) and test it out. Mike Austin threw the clubhead from the top and although he didn’t actually say it, that throw is right handed. Nicklaus said you can’t release too early (some say this is also an advanced instruction) which implies right hand. Henry Cotton, Bill Melhorn, Jimmy Ballard, A J Bonner, Monte Schienblum, Tony Luczak (my guru) and many many more including Hogan’s 3 right hands advocate right hand control. There’s no one teacher or one school that had everything for me. Mike Austin Joe Dante Tony Luczak Mike Maves These guys gave me pieces no one else had but I had to put it all together to come up with a swing that for me feels as natural as throwing a ball. If I could putt like could in my 20s, I’d be scratch or better...alas at my age I probably won’t fulfill my dream of a plus handicap. I am in no way discrediting Chuck Waltz as Homer Kelley will tell you, there’s a million ways to hit a golf ball properly.

The reason the 'left-right debate is a 200+ year old point of contention' is because there is no point of reference between one player (or coach) and the next player. Some inherently need more 'right-hand' and some less. The key however is knowing when to *use* the right hand...
@maeu59
@maeu59 Ай бұрын
I think this debate is misunderstood, Hogan said you hit with both hands like the two handed throw, the problem is no one really explains it right, IMO the left hand steers and the right hand adds the power. Try pushing a bike without holding the handle bars, the bike would be all over the place, or the simple concept of a rear wheel drive car. The left arm pulls or steers the club and the right arm will apply the power at the right time. The idea of taking the right or dominant side out of the swing is misguided.
@jamestown4867
@jamestown4867 Ай бұрын
Since posting my original comment, I’ve become an adherent of Mike Austin and Joe Dante methods. There is much instruction advocating a passive right arm/ wrist/ hand/ finger type of action. I believe simply that virtually all right handers attempting to hit a golf shot for the first time will be too dominant with the right side. OTT, chunking and topping and so much goes wrong with an overpowering right. I believed as you that the left steers and the right provides the power. And I think we’re both right in that the maximum use of both sides is the ultimate goal. Mike describes the left hand/wrist action as throwing a frisbee. That thought is disastrous for me as feelings and images are very subjective and personal but I do feel my left arm as a lever with a spring loaded hinge at the wrist. As I said, steering with the left is also what I believed but now I feel if there is any steering, it’s more like a rudder -no steering input. My right now controls everything; Approach angle, face, swing path, speed and power. I practice many one sided shots and my right side definitely has more control and distance than the left. In the beginning, fear of releasing the right hand led to more confidence and distance with the left but I learned to hit the golf ball with my right hand in a similar way to ping pong and tennis - applying power, speed and face control totally with the right. Using his left side to its potential, I’m sure Hogan’s three right hands or rather having the strength of three right hands implies right hand control. I tell folks that come to me for advice to hit as hard as you want and control the face with the right hand so long as it doesn’t overpower the left. Golf is a two handed game but I wouldn’t let my stupid hand conduct the orchestra. Anyway, I do believe that many instructors advise to let the right ride along simply because of the beginner’s instinct to over use the right at the wrong time. Fairways and Greens! PenguinGolf

This is the best fix for a hook. It totally gets rid of the hook. But now my shots leak to the right. I am really leary about using hand action to close the face because I don't want the hooks to come back. Is there something I can do stop leaking shots to the right. On narrrow fairways I can get in trouble. Can anyone suggest something?

@TheNYgolfer 7 жыл бұрын
ohn T Many people misinterpret this style of swinging to mean you pull the club directly with the left shoulder and arm. That is a recipe for coming over the top resulting often in a slice. This style if swinging is a coiling and uncoiling action and the downswing starts with a forward weight shift which then pulls everything around in sequence. The hips pull the shoulders then arms ,hands and club (kinematic sequencing). Assuming you are sequencing properly and therefor not coming over the top the next thing to look at is 1.Left hand grip pressure must be loose (2 or 3 on a scale of 10) and the shaft must be gripped only with the last 3 fingers of the left hand (pinkie ,ring and middle finger). If you death grip the club the face will not freely rotate around the sweetspot and the face stays open through impact 2.Your grip. You may need a stronger grip. More than 2 knuckles showing. 3. Your shafts may be too soft for your swing speed. Try swinging smoothly at 80 percent and if your shots stop leaking you should either keep swinging at 80 percent (great idea IMO) or try a stiffer shaft Show less REPLY
