I love what is being produced with Notch, but his license is too expensive for artists, or people who want to work with him, especially from emerging countries.

One question what button did you clicked in 13:09, I heard “plus/class button”.

On the Notch TOP, if you look next to the Block parameter, I clicked on the plus symbol to the right side of the string field. That opens up a file picker for you to choose where your Notch Block is saved.

thank you for this! is there any way you know of to connect notch and td during development on the notch end? it would be great to test controlling parameters in notch without having to export a dll every time- perhaps over midi or OSC? i'm also quite intimidated by the pricing for notch licenses. the fact that that a 99gbp/month subscription will still leave you with watermarked media server blocks seems crazy to me! what are your thoughts on these limitations / any tips for a lower budget workflow? the monthly pro license is about the cost of my car...
@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ 4 жыл бұрын
OSC would be really easy to setup. You could make a Constant CHOP with your control parameters, connect that to an OSC Out CHOP with the correct address details (you'll find them in a moment). Inside of Notch you'd go to the top menu Project -> Settings -> Protocols, enable OSC and use the receiving port inside of TouchDesigner as the port. Then create an OSC Modifier node in Notch and find the name of the channel in TouchDesigner and type it into the OSC Address parameter of the OSC Modifier node with a / in front of it. For example if the channel is named chan1 in TouchDesigner you'd type /chan1 into that parameter. After that you wont see anything still until you actually assign that value to something and start the timeline. Nothing else needed!

The pricing looks much more intimidating than it is but it also isn't for everyone. I actually was confused which license I have, it's the Learning license which was only 99gbp one-time payment. If you pay for the monthly I don't believe you have the watermarks anymore at all. Inside of our HQ PRO we had some lengthy discussions about the cost and how to justify it. Why a lot of people are excited is that although it can feel expensive upfront, the amount of time you'll save in creating high quality content might outweigh the cost the license. If you tried to do a lot of these things in TouchDesigner alone, you'd need not only a deep technical understanding of some complex materials, but also you'd need a bunch of development days to build the things you want to use, which inherently costs money (time is money!). So instead of spending all that time (which usually costs money or could be used to make more money) you pay for Notch which has a lot of high-end looking content and simulations ready to roll out with a small handful of nodes. For me it's a no-brainer, but we understand everyone is in different financials situations and it might not make sense for a lot of people. But the way I see it, if I can reduce development time of a project by about a week, then buying Notch license actually makes me money instead of costing me money.

@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ this makes plenty of sense- thank you for your thoughtful replies! i guess it's true that if you've already got notch-applicable work coming in, the license will pay for itself very quickly. happy to learn about an easy OSC setup for cross-platform communication as well. thanks again for all the great content, looking forward to discovering more!

@@webglol2366 No problem! Happy to share our knowledge. I think that's the good approach when thinking about the license. If there's a project with a budget that isn't really low, then it should pay for itself with the amount of time you save making high quality content. Glad you're enjoying our content :) Stay subscribed to get new videos every week!

I think it can definitely help lots of folks who want to work in this industry but don't want to get involved with really deep coding. Notch just gives you more tools that you can use and integrate with each other before you need to reach for code. It's still good to learn a bit of Python because it makes controlling TouchDesigner a lot easier, but I could imagine if you had strong Notch skills that you could make lots of beautiful and complex graphics without code that can then be controlled by TouchDesigner.

wondering what's the difference and benefit between notch and houdini to connect with touchdesigner?
@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ 4 жыл бұрын
@@chanscarlett8174 one of the major differences is that Notch is a real time engine, whereas Houdini is an offline rendering engine. Everything in Notch is designed to run in real-time and the way the app exports it's creations (notch blocks) are geared towards implementation in real time systems. Houdini on the other hand is more of a traditional environment that is offline rendering. In that case you build what you want to build and exporting is done offline. There are things you can do to bring over data for real time usage, such as putting particle system positions into texture data, but it's hard to say that's really "real-time integration" when you compare it with something like Notch Blocks inside of a Notch TOP.

@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ Amazing! that's really helps a alot! Thanks for your answer!!!! By the way, since the Unreal 5 lauched recently, and I know nothing about that, but have seen many brilliant project using Notch+touchdesigner+unreal~what is the benefit of using unreal connecting to touchdesigner in the project? Many thx!!!!!!!! 😊 ☺️ 🙏
@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ 4 жыл бұрын
@@chanscarlett8174 No problem, glad our answer is helpful :) Notch + TouchDesigner + Unreal might be a little bit redundant. In that scenario, Notch and Unreal will be accomplishing many of the same goals, which is to make really beautiful content that can be controlled by a system like TouchDesigner. Although because Notch Blocks are so easy to integrate, you might integrate a few things from Notch, then have a bigger scene in Unreal that you control from TouchDesigner. So I think you could use all three, but most likely based on what kind of project it is I would imagine you would choose either Notch + TouchDesigner or Unreal + TouchDesigner. Hopefully that's helpful!

Companies like this start out in the AV industry, and so prices are insane and just not accessible to developers. I’m not paying a dime when there’s so much out there for free. These companies need to re-evaluate their business model, because if I can’t learn it or I have to pay to learn it, then I’m just not going to, and there just won’t be enough people using the platform. Blender is node based and free, and I can integrate it with TouchDesigner all for free. No thanks on this one. Thank you for bringing it to the communities awareness regardless.

It always depends on how you calculate the costs of a project. When you're starting your career, you often have more time than money, in which case it can be really really hard to justify paying for anything! As folks progress through their career more, I find the balance starts to shift towards more money than time. That's when apps like Notch start to make a lot more sense. For myself in particular, if I can make something great in 1 day in Notch vs it taking 3 days in TouchDesigner, if I compare the cost of Notch to my day rate for development, it's actually cheaper (and I save myself a bunch of time) to buy Notch license for a project. But it's a different calculation for everyone, what I'd suggest is to stay open to thinking about the value of money and your time and reflecting on where it's best to spend and where it's best to save on a project by project basis.

It really depends on your approach to project work. For a lot of artists and developers just getting started with their careers, it can definitely feel like another expense that can't be sustained. For the folks who are at the point in their career where they're starting to get more and more project work consistently coming in, what they'll quickly realize is that in many cases it makes more sense to invest in software like Notch that allows them to build content multiple times faster than if they were trying to make that content without Notch. The amount of time you save allows you to take on more opportunities, work in tighter crunches and see better results, and allows you to bill the same amount to your clients without needing to work nearly as hard to get beautiful outcomes. So it definitely depends on where people are at in their career, but for many many folks the investment makes perfect sense and it actually helps you make even more money!

@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ thx a lot for explaining all this. I can see your point, I still think that particular software pricing is a deterrent for any person even at peak of carreer specially during a recession, I find thier pricing to be unrealistic not really encouraging anyone by fixing extortion price on software. Maybe good for people at peak of carrer in America where everything is disproportioned, not here in Europe. this is only my opinion.

We are the 99%! lol a few split the cake while rest has no chances, you can see that logic even in youtube, few make million view with stupid videos, most people do nothing despite having far more interesting videos. You can try climbing lader until you realise the whole thing is rigged. This is not what should be the internet either. I 'm looking forward to a more community way of managing things in general for the planet.
