No doubting his ability on the ball, but he has a tendency to push shots back into the 6 yard box which is very dangerous in the PL with the quality of strikers.

He has a very good save %, and although there’s a chance that some of his parries end up in the 6 yard box sometimes, the idea is that if United dominate possession due to his ball playing skills, then they’d face less situations where he has to make a save. De gea used to kick the ball straight to the opposition or out when he was under pressure, Onana is completely the opposite end.

@@martinelligabriel4821 firstly it has to be noted his save percentage was better because he faced less shots than De Gea and he was playing against lesser opposition in Italy. Secondly, he’s very poor at collecting crosses, something that is very similar to De Gea and it’s something teams will capitalise on. Thirdly, it might allow United to play a more possession based game, but it also means he’s going to make errors in doing that like all goalkeepers, only issue is, if a keeper makes an error it results in goals. Lastly, he isn’t very good in 1v1 situations, something De Gea was good at. Overall I think he’s a good signing, but the jury is out on whether he can adapt to a team without a striker and in a far quicker and physical league

@@25261006 no his cross claiming is not bad. In fact it’s one of the best in the world. Inter Milan played a deep block so he didn’t need to claim crosses, but under Ten Hag at Ajax, he was in the 98th percentile in cross claiming in both the Dutch league and the champions league. And also that’s my point that United will face lesser shots because they will dominate possession because of him and his passing. United had an average possession of around 52% last season, this pre season, with the first teamers it’s already on an average of 61% and this is before Onana has even played a game. It’s a complete game changer.

André Onana is a true masterpiece of a shape shifter. You can literally press high while leaving just 2 defenders behind, and he would still provide cover and play more as a third fullback.
