On July 21, Universal Studios and Christopher Nolan are going all in with celluloid distribution. Nolan's next film is getting prints in 35mm, 70mm and IMAX film. As a massive IMAX and celluloid fan, I am doing everything I can to spread the word about how incredible this is and so should you. Tell you friends and family to support IMAX film!

How was the picture quality? I thought the only 70mm IMAX was in London. I might want to go to Prague to see a film in this format one day. We only have 70mm but not IMAX's 70mm here in Sweden.

A Christopher Nolan movie is an event. He's one of the last director's to care about film. To me it's superior to digital and the way movies should be.

Fortunately, my local IMAX cinema has a 70mm projector and is one of the 30 cinemas screening Oppenheimer in that format. I was talking to someone who works there last year and he said that it costs quite a bit to swap the 70mm projector and the digital projector.

@@tomhunt5152 Lie-max is an unofficial term to describe when they project a film Digitally on the IMAX screen. The thing is, they always fail to inform the public on the difference between the two. And a lot of people don't seem to realise that the quality of digital video is still far behind analogue film, especially when we're talking about IMAX.

I’m fortunate enough to have a 70mm IMAX theater in my town, and I was able to watch Interstellar in 70mm IMAX and it was absolutely amazing. Already got my tickets to see Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX too. If you have the chance to see a movie in 70mm IMAX, absolutely take it.

I watched Oppenehiemer on the biggest IMAX screen I could find, unfortunately not 70MM because it would take too long to get to such a theater since there are none in my local area. Witnessing this masterpiece by Nolan in IMAX is a phenomenal experience I would never forget, truly the best time I had in the cinema this year so far, it was beyond incredible.

What's so awesome about this is that we are valuing hard work, and analog technology. The shear physical effort alone of carrying 600 pound film spools and the cameraman filming with 220 pound cameras. I am so glad to know that Humans still value such things. This is reminiscent of Mission Impossible 7 using a real train for the scenes, not a CGI train. And using a real base jump, not a CGI green screen jump. The old fashion analog work behind the scenes is what makes Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible 7 so special.

I’m spoiled in California when it comes to IMAX, in SF, I got the AMC metreon IMAX, 75ftx97ft screen, the second biggest IMAX in the USA after the 76ftx101ft in NYC, which who’s going to notice a 3 foot difference in IMAX, pretty much the same size screen. I also got the Esquire IMAX in Sacramento and another IMAX in Dublin, CA. All of these are true IMAX theaters, I don’t have the lieMax problem. Can’t wait to get really high before going into the IMAX 70mm film, who knows when this phenomenon will happen again!

I’m glad I’m old enough and started doing my research on real IMAX and LieMAX. Now I’m attending my one real IMAX theater in Vegas regularly for movies filmed in the format and traveling to Universal Hollywood for IMAX 70MM. I can’t wait! It’ll be my first time experiencing 70MM

the Kramer IMAX theatre in Canada will be adding a 15/70 copy of Oppenheimer to their collection. They already have the Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet and the unrestored version of 2001 A Space Odyssey that Nolan supervised in 2018. Only 4 of those were made! I have my 3 tickets to secure my 3 collectible 70mm film strips.

Great video man! We need more people talkjing not only about the advantages of shooting on film, but also the huge advantages of film PROJECTION. Ever since the 2014 film projectionist massacre, the theatrical experience has continued to go down hill. The average theater is screening standard films with 2k digital projectors that are extremely dim in comparison to the bright amazing 35mm prints that hold 5-6k digital equivalents. Seeing Oppenheimer in 70 IMAX at Nolan's favorite theater, AMC Citywalk, on the openeing preview night. Then seeing it on Friday at the Irvine Spectrum in 70 IMAX as well. Super excited and definitely will documenting it. Keep up the great work!

Thank you for your in detail explanation! I’d like to ask a question! I reserved both AMC citywalk and Irvine Spectrum, but if you choose one theater, what would be? I heard Nolan goes to Citywalk for qc the film. And Citywalk has two projector and Irvine has only one ‘laser’ projector? But i don’t get the latter part. What’s the meaning of having laser one when playing 70mm imax film? 🤔 Hope this makes sense!

Can't wait to see it on 70mm imax! I've watched the Dark Knight on 70mm IMAX years ago, and the scenes switched from traditional film to IMAX, it was monumental seeing the fidelity and perspective difference between the two formats, unfortunately, at the time, it's a shame the entire film wasn't shot on 70mm. Fast forward to Dunkirk and Interstellar; those were absolutely amazing on 70mm! I just hope the Cinemark Dallas WebChapel IMAX is cleaner than I remember it from when I saw Interstellar there years ago.

We lost our 70MM IMAX projector here unfortunately. I saw all of his previous films in 70MM IMAX. This will be my first time missing out on it. Fortunately, we’re getting a standard 70MM screening though. So I’m going to that. Then seeing the IMAX digital screening.

I saw an interview of Zack Snyder that Nolan had a custom made, one of a kind lens for used in filming in IMAX. He wanted to burrow it for JL since he was also filming it in IMAX but he lend it out to Abrams for Episode VII's IMAX scenes. And was nagging Nolan to get it back so he can use it too. It was like a group of kids lending out a video game among each other LOL.

It's crazy to think how epic movies like Oppenheimer and Dune had probably less than half the budget of Fast X, yet both of those films will undoubtedly look 10x better on the big screen. Same with the latest Indiana Jones movie. Although I thought it was a decent enough movie, learning it's one of the most expensive movies ever made blew my mind. Because more often than not, the CGI was not only noticeable but such low quality, it took me out of the movie for a bit. You know going in that's not something you have to worry about with Nolan films

the 5-perf and 15-perf IMAX prints will be done photochemically. the only digital part will be the opening Universal logo. pretty awesome

I have a 15/70 IMAX theater nearby, and saw Dunkirk and both Dark Knights there. It broke, but universal fixed it for Oppenheimer. I’ve seen it twice there, and it’s just amazing!

It’s a shame only 19 theaters in the US are showing 70mm IMAX… I got to see Interstellar and Dunkirk in this format but won’t be able to see Oppenheimer this way… only IMAX digital. Instead of making the 4 hour trip to NYC I’m making the 1 hour trip to Scranton, PA Saturday… I did this for Tenet too). I’ve actually seen every Nolan film in one of these two IMAX formats going back to The Dark Knight. So stoked.

My theater thankfully is getting this on 70mm. Ive seen dark knight, dark knight rises, interstellar, dunkirk and tenet, and surprisingly force awakens and rogue one in 70 mm all at the same spot. If you can i highly recommend checking it out in 70mm format. I cant wait to see oppenheimer next weekend!

In Glasgow I have the choice to watch this in 70mm at the Glasgow Film Theatre or at the dedicated IMAX theatre which doesn't mention 70mm, only 65mm. Which venue would you choose?

if your theatre is split in a lower and upper section, I'd say the middle of the first three rows of the upper section are great

wish I had been more aware of the world of film prints and formats when interstellar was released, one of my favorite movies of all time and I would KILL to have seen in in 70mm IMAX, luckily I was able to snag some dead center seats in the very back row of a 70mm IMAX screening for Oppenheimer in about a week and a half. I've already seen it once in regular IMAX, and then 2 days before the big screening we'll be seeing it in regular 70mm 5 perf, and the of course 70mm 15 perf, cannot wait

Hi Dylan, great video, I love that you used the real 1.43:1 aspect ratio. I do have a question for you, I will be watching ''Oppenheimer'' in Brussels. They play it on a digital laser projector. What is the difference between Digital and a film projection? I still will be seeing it in the correct ratio, so I am personally not sure what the big difference will be. Thank you Dylan, best Jacob

main difference is ultimately quality. Awesome that you'll still get the 1.43 AR but it'll only be projected in 4K whereas the film projection is significantly higher and will result in more clarify and resolution. Whether or not one can truly distinguish the difference is up for argument though. But with film projection you'll be seeing the actual film itself, so the image will be more "true" to what Nolan's vision is, with "flickering" and all. Regardless, what your option is is definitely great

Just got the last tickets available near me for 70mm. I didn’t realize but it doesn’t say imax anywhere. I hope it’s still better than the normal 35mm film version but I know it won’t be as good as the imax 70mm :(

I went online to look up any theaters that will show 70mm and IMAX but there's only 2 in texas lol however I did see some theaters showing it in just IMAX or "premium large format " idk what that means?

If they just say "IMAX" then it's IMAX digital. You'll have to check with the theatre on whether or not it's IMAX xenon/single laser or dual laser. IMAX dual laser will also give you an aspect ratio of 1.43:1. But obviously that'll be a digital presentation and not a film presentation. Premium large format could mean a variety of things, but unless it specifically says IMAX, it's not IMAX.

I was searching youtube and internet all about some info about IMAX. I had to ask my IMAX theathres in my country about in what format and what kind of IMAX they show. Because they all adverstise with ''IMAX''. But no further details about what kind of format/film. But a question, is it still worth it to go to a IMAX theathr where they use 35mm?

Sharper, much much sharper. Just a lower contrast so blacks look more grey, whites don’t get as bright

I just checked and all of the nearest IMAX theaters for me are pretty much sold out for Oppenheimer, especially the ones for 70mm. Guess I’ll be watching it in a regular theater. Maybe I’ll have better luck with Nolan’s next film.

That’s great! Unfortunately it’s not the biggest IMAX in the world though. It may be the widest, but it’s not the tallest and it’s not a 1.43 screen. It’s a 1.90 screen but they’ll be masking it to adjust for the square image. If you get a chance, watch it at Universal Citywalk, IMAX film projector and a true IMAX screen there. But the Chinese theatre is still a great experience! I saw Interstellar there when it released and while it’s not as good as Citywalk, it’s still super fun.

I have a question, I bought my tickets for Oppenheimer in IMAX with Lazer which means it's gonna be 1.9:1 on the screen. And everywhere I go I see that it's produced to watch in 70mm which is 1,43:1. So my question is, what's resolution will be better and if there is any difference between this formats?

It also depends on whether or not your theatre is single laser or dual laser. Dual laser is 4k compared to IMAX 70mm which is significantly higher. I'm not sure what the resolution for single laser is though

There no 70mm IMAX theaters in Colorado and, while I am excited for that movie, I'm not taking a trip to Cali or Texass to see it. 😂 There is a regular 70mm theater near Denver though so that's where I'll be. 👍🏻

Same I just hope IMAX 70mm isn't a significant difference from just 70mm with no IMAX
