Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza is a MASTERPIECE. An amazing film that only gets better the more you think about it! In this video, Zach Pope gives his review on the latest PTA MOVIE called Licorice Pizza. Licorice Pizza Movie Review. #LicoricePizz #HaimSisters #Haim #PaulThomasAnderson

Hmmm, it took me back (I was 10 years old in 1973) and very effectively captured being a SoCal teen in the 70s. Music score is right on (Doors, Wings, Bowie, being notable for the moments they came into play). But there were just too many plot dead-ends for me as the story ambled along for a couple hours. Felt good, but doesn't fit my definition of masterpiece. Oh, and Tom Waits is always a good addition to a movie, musically or on screen!

Saw it over the weekend and I completely agree - it's just a wonderful film. PTA never fails to amaze me. Boogie Nights is one of my all-time favorite movies, and this was nearly (to me) right there with it (I'd still prefer BN but I think the more I see this it will get even closer to that 1997 gem). And I agree - it's a wonderful slice of life from southern California circa 1973. The music...the wardrobe....the sets/locations...but above all, the performances of the two leads. They are both phenomenal and would love to see one or both of them get an Oscar nomination. Thx for the review!

I'm not sure, I got a completely different vibe from this film than you, when I first saw the trailer I was extremely hyped for the film, the use of the song Life On Mars, just was a amazing and i couldn't wait to watch the film. I've always enjoyed the slice of life and coming of age stories and I thought this would be the same. But I dont know, the film just seemed like a long drawn out mess with no clear point. I loved the cinematography and the sets used but it just couldn't live up to any expectations I had of it. Especially when Life on Mars was reused in the film, its such a strong and impactful song and yet it just feels like they placed it randomly in the film only because it was in the trailer. Maybe the fact that there was no structure and that there were no scenes where I could emotionally attach to any characters made this an unenjoyable film for me.

I loved this movie, too. I saw it at a theater and later at a friend's house. Are you aware that a lot of what's in the movie really happened? PTA grew up with a kid name Gary something. His last name starts with a G and he was a child actor. A lot of what happened in the movie happened to Gary. I guess that's why the main character's name is Gary.

While I grew up in Chicago, being a kid in 1973 was pretty much the same everywhere. I was 12 in 1973 and music and television had become the two most important things in my life. It was nice to go back and visit a simpler, happier time in my life. It sort of makes my reality of today seem surreal-I feel like I was born on another planet called the 70's and somehow ended up here--where everyone is angry and rude and offended by everything. It made me ask, what happened? How long was I out? Did I swallow my tongue? How did I end up in this planet of unhappy, ungrateful, misfits who have no concept of reality? It made me long for the 70's--the early 70's before disco. It makes my heart ache to think that life will never be this happy, carefree and uncomplicated again.

I just watched it and loved it. I think what some people might miss that made it so good to me was how relatable it is (and not because of the time period, seeing as I’m a 2000’s kid.) It was definitely all over the place and odd, but it just had a charm of it being a momentary glimpse at this period of these peoples’ lives. And as for the age gap that everyone is upset about, it’s definitely weird, but I just imagined them being closer in age because they really don’t look that different in age

Absolutely. This film glorifies a totally in appropriate, not to mention illegal, relationship. At least make Gary 16 so that it’s considered legal and ‘appropriate’ in most states. BUT, a 15 year old involved with a 25 year old!? Even in West Virginia age of consent is 16 now.. If the shoe was on the other foot, a male 25 year old with a female 15 year old, what would people think of this? Also, I guess this makes it OK for a 25 year old teacher, right out of college, to pursue (or accept) a relationship with his 15 year old Fresh/Soph student!? That would be ok? Or if the 25 year old guy who graduated 7 years ago comes back to HS to take his 15 YEAR OLD girlfriend to prom!?? CREEPY? YES! CRIMINAL? YES! OUTRIGHT OFFENSIVE? YES. I won’t even get into the way a middle aged Caucasian businessman treated his Asian partners. Was this supposed to be satye ? Mocking the idiocy of the era? Well, it was poorly written and exulted if that’s what it was supposed to poetry. MASTERPIECE? COME ON MAN!

There Will Be Blood on the other hand was a slight disappointment until I rewatched and rewatched and broke down every frame for it to become the masterpiece it was all along. I loved it, too and had a similar reaction to you. The movie seemed so comfortable in its own skin and the characters seemed so real. The relationship between Gary and Alana was both funny and also quite moving -- they push each other to grow as young people. The depiction of the 1970s, from the film stock to the colors to the clothing to the soundtrack music was also dead on and evocative. Just like you, I found myself alternately smiling and on the verge of tears (good tears) at moments throughout the film. And during the closing credits as they head up the street together through the neighborhood with the sun going down over the palm trees in the San Fernando Valley -- it was just *chef's kiss* ... sublime. And Bradley Cooper's manic gonzo take on Jon Peters was hilarious. I especially loved his pickup line: "Do you like peanut butter sandwiches?" 🙂

A relationship with someone who is 15 and 25 should not be romanticized if it was a 15 year old girl and a 25 year old man what would you think?
@kirkkicklighter1772
@kirkkicklighter1772 2 жыл бұрын
@@audramcdonaldapologist3676 Oh well, guess we strongly disagree. Gary helps Alana to grow as a human being. He propels her out of her stuck place in life (she's going nowhere when she meets him; his bravado fascinates her). They are a gift to each other, on a soul level. It's not sexual, so just relax about all of that nonsense. Let the church ladies of the world worry about all that. I'm sorry, but life and relationships and who touches our hearts will not always fit into the rigid rules we have in our heads for how it should be. It's a deep friendship more than anything else. If we were to meet these characters ten years from now, they are probably not together at all, but they will remember each other fondly and with gratitude, just as Gary says, "I'm not gonna forget you, and you're not gonna forget me." In that sense, the movie is looking back at a coming of age for two people. And ten years from now (in real life) this film will be considered a minor masterpiece on the level of "American Graffiti" or "Dazed and Confused." So come back to the comments section, then. We shall see. Bring your fancy picnic bib ... so you can dine on some humble pie.

His best movie yet? U do know he directed There Will Be Blood , Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love right? He is one of my tops 5 film makers of all time so those are some strong words I'm very excited that Benny Safdie is in it as well even tho the Safdies only have a few movies under their belt they too are some of my all time favorite directors they are the new Cohen Brothers.

Licorice pizza is one of the best movies that not only did I watch the trailer at least 50 times and fall in love with it and “Life on Mars?”. I got to see one of the first showings but to top it all off was Bernies Pinball Palace. The funniest joke in the movie was definitely the atheism at Jewish dinner! The movies is as memorable and amazing as my favorite movie “Almost Famous”

Are there two movies with same name? Because I just watched it and I can't think of single funny scene.. This movie felt like fever dream you can't wake up from and not in a good way. There are so many running scenes I thought they are trying to escape it as well. I'll give it to the main actor - he did great.

@@ZachPopeReviews Phantom Thread has the most beautiful voice of any woman heard on screen. The music is breathtaking, as I've always wanted to dress to the nines with a cane and perform a dance at like Dillard's to this song live like a flash mob or whatever the- - His sister in the movie kills me every time her non verbal acting maybe even better than Robert De Niro in Jackie Brown

It's weird how cultural differences can affect our experiences of art. I felt nearly nothing watching this movie. Don't think I laughed a single time. I found this review because I was so baffled by how well reviewed this movie was after I finished watching it, I had to hit the web to see if it was one of those times where I missed some important metaphorical content or something.

I watched Licorice Pizza yesterday, it was good. I'll be watching it again Friday Dec 24. I loved the 70s soundtrack and the immersive experience of the movie. PTA says there was a lot of running in the movie because as young adults, the main characters didn't know where they were going. That's one of the reasons Cooper Hoffman had many jobs in the movie.

I kept thinking I wish PTA adapted Danny Sugarman's Wondreland Avenue : Tales of Glamour and Excess. That kid had an interesting life and it REALLY did happen. This didn't and I found it hard to believe that everything came to the 15 year old boy's character so easily and still none of what happens is interesting enough to make a subplot ( that wont tie up with the next) in a movie about it. He starts a waterbed company and then a pinball arcade, big deal and also HOW? AND he's treated like a celebrity, do they live in a small town where everyone knows each other or Los Angeles?

This is one of my least favorite PTA movies. Just watching kids hang out for two hours bored me. The Bradley Cooper scene was the only thing I really liked. Wish he would have had a bigger role. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Master & There Will Be Blood are what I would call masterpieces.

What the hell's wrong with y'all? A romantic relationship between a 25 year old woman and a 15 year old boy. Any movie that openly romanticizes p*dophilia like this is sick and twisted. Can't believe this isn't being rejected, really says a lot of the people praising it.

Anyone notice how all the comments primarily mention and focus on Paul Thomas Andersons prior works?? This film is rarely mentions in any detail… and all the great past works are focused on. Blinders. This film is horrible and offensive. Just this work for the sake of itself. Forget PTA, Boogey Nights, Punch Drunk Love, and Dazed and Confused (all movies with appropriate relationships between appropriate - and legally - aged adults)! Watch it on its own merits… and you’ll realize that it’s a terrible script, a terrible message, completely incoherent, and utterly offensive (even criminal).. The actors performed excellently and cinematography was spot on… Otherwise it was more shit than masterpiece!

coming of age title for who? the 15 year old guy dating a 25+ year old woman? is that what you refer to as a "light" and "joyful" film? is that what you call a "slice of life film"? one where a late 20s year old grooms a high school underage person?
