So one thing to consider. I’m a Board Certified Pedorthist. I can make custom orthotics for your shoes. If I make an orthotic for you what I’m doing is shifting pressure. The orthotic can give relief but the force is still there so you may eventually develop other issues. So short term there is relief. Long term maybe other problems. I think the same with mouse? Mice? Haha get a new mouse it’s shifting pressure. Pressure is still there. Just going somewhere else. So I think variety is the key. The longer you use any apparatus the more pressure issues arise. Something to consider. Love your channel Chris. You’ve taught me a TON! Thank u -Arlo

I had to deal with serious issues. Doc said "acute" something , but basically it was repetitive stress in the wrists , elbows, etc. I finally figured out exactly what you said. I use the Magic Mouse, Magic pad, Trackman, Thumbballs and now I am buying this. I change them out as a repetitive injury starts to peak up. Its the only thing that worked for me. Someone who works on the computer and switches over to playing on the other computer all night.

I have one but I actually put it up to save space because I use a trackpad and I had them both on my desk. I love the apple trackpad because of the pinch to zoom feature and being able to swipe through different screens among other things but this video makes me want to give the trackball a try again

Hey Chris, I've been using the Kensington trackball for almost 25 years. Originally I use the Kensington trackball Pro but later moved into the Bluetooth version late last year. It is by far the most superior product that I have ever found. I'm so happy that you had the opportunity to find it and appreciate it the way I do. It has never let me down and until it ever does, I shall sing its praises. I've had both hands operated on for carpal tunnel syndrome as I played wheelchair sports for 30+ years so I do recognize the pain you went through. Congratulations on finding the Kensington Way.

Switched to a trackball after developing chronic wrist pain because I'm editing a lot of death metal drummers who think they can play blast beats. It's still flaring back up every now and then and I'm currently retraining to use my left hand at my day job and only right hand for music stuff but it's gotten much better since I made the switch. I'm barely 30 which is not a good time to already have crippling chronic pain in my hands when I need to use mice both for my day job and for my second job.

Been using that exact trackball for years. In fact onto my second one after a move. As a Mac user I actually kind of generally prefer my Magic Trackpad which allows me to do gestures and is whisper quiet (and otherwise same benefits of wrist health + saving space), but the reason I keep the trackball around is simply most DAWs apart from Logic don't support the Magic Trackpad very nicely. I mean the trackpad will function in let's say Cubase and PT, but the experience is subpar. So I'm a kind of crazy person, with both the trackpad and trackball on my desk and I switch them out on a regular basis haha! But yeah, I don't think I could ever do a regular mouse again, especially after all these years.

Great video, Chris! I'd love to see you test out something like the Logitech MX Ergo, a trackball mouse with a traditional mouse shape. I've used this style of trackball for over 15 years. Both of these Kensingtons gave me excruciating pain in my index finger and thumb upon heavy use, which for me was possibly due to the awkwardness of using the thumb to click and the index finger to move the pointer. Perhaps it's my hand shape, but I found that my thumb has a much better range of motion to move a trackball, and my index and middle fingers are far more comfortable when clicking.

IT IS NOT A GAMING MOUSE , its pretty clunky for gaming but its great for internet browsing and CAD work and VIDEO SOUND editing .i really look into getting the new wireless version ! i like the BIG BALL!

Update for anyone following along at home. Finally got the Slimblade Pro, there seems to have been a stock shortage last month. Right out of the box I hated it, slow movements were jumpy and not responsive and not as accurate as the Expert Mouse I was used to. But found a firmware update to fix the issue and is now accurate and working as expected. I'm surprised the new firmware isn't loaded on the trackball from the factory. Maybe this issue only affects a small number of units? I do enjoy the scroll mechanism of the Slimblade, but going between the Expert Mouse and the Slimblade on the different computers I use, I do sometimes do the wrong scroll movement at 1st. The same problem as if you are switching between Mac and PC's with the Ctrl and Command keyboard shortcuts. I am still getting used to the shape of the Slimbade after using the Expert Mouse for 10+ years, It is quite smooth and slippery and lower profile compared to the Expert Mouse but feel like it's just something I'll get used to over time.

Great video! I've been using trackballs for literally decades. I also identify as a Kensington Shill. That said, I'd like to add a few notes as an addendum to the video. 1. Kensington Mouseworks is great when it works, but I have noticed with version 3 that it's unstable and when it crashes, it actually disables mouse function, even with a built-in trackpad on a laptop. The only way I've figured out how to get it back is to reboot the computer. I'm trying to figure out how to get around this issue. 2. The sensor on the scroll ring SUCKS. I currently own multiple Kensington trackballs, one with a mechanical wheel and one with the sensor, and I find using the sensor very frustrating, as it does not track my movements 1 to 1. Other people's mileage may vary. 3. Dust collects on the optical sensors beneath the ball, this is true. NEVER USE YOUR FINGER TO CLEAN THEM, though, you can deposit body oils onto them, which messes with their functionality over time. It's recommended to use an air duster, and/or a microfiber cloth to clean them when necessary. You can tell when it's time to clean them; the dust creates friction against the ball, making it more difficult to manipulate. 4. I agree, portability can be an issue for the 4 button trackballs, however there are hard-shell cases available. They do take up a decent amount of space but they make traveling with the trackball safer for the unit for sure. I have a case for each of my units. With all that said, I've own multiple models of Kensingtons, and I found they last a pretty long time, and I haven't had a reason to switch to another brand yet, even with the issues I mentioned.

I had pains in my neck and shoulders from spending so much time working with Cubase. After a while I decided that if I was going to continue I would have to make my workspace more ergonomic. In addition to getting a decent chair (also very important) I went with the Kensington Slimblade. Like you, it took a while to get used to but I have never looked back. The pain in my neck and shoulders is gone and I am able to work more comfortably than before. I do have both the Kensington Expert and Slimblade track balls and I like the Slimblade the best. I work with a Kensington trackball at my workspace - a huge broadcaster here in Germnany. Most of the Nuendo functions are bound to keyboard shortcuts anyway - so I love the trackball, once you get used to it, it's super fast, almost no movement with your "mousearm". it's really great if you do the same steps in post production all the time. In my own Music-Studio I use a normal mouse... and feel no disadvantages. It's a bit more "movement-intense" but also a little bit more precise. So I use both and can't complain about one or the other.

I tried a trackball a long time ago and didn't take to it, though perhaps I didn't give it enough time. I'm still open to switching at some point, but I have desk space that's SO limited there's barely room for my Apple Trackpad and my wrist doesn't actually rest on the surface of the desk (which is a serious problem I need to solve). At the moment I'm OK because I'm not producing music all day, but I should probably review this!

Thanks for this video. I have the older version of the same model where in order to scroll, you rotate the ball instead of swiping along the rim. Yours looks much easier! I switched from a regular mouse because like you I was getting carpal tunnel. I think it was because in order to move the mouse across the screen I had to lift it over and over. My carpal tunnel healed when I switched. Thanks also for reminding about the four "buttons". I haven't been taking full advantage of those.

Then I highlight the audio to the right of the cut, and click my upper right button, which then shifts it to the closer grid marker and then fills in the audio. Drum editing is so much faster now!!

I've seen people using them with the wrist pad... that requires cranking your wrist backwards. Which is the same syndrome that brings on carpal tunnel when typing. I have my wrist elevated (the ball is actually in a drawer) arm ~90 degrees to my elbow, so I'm reaching *down* to it. Wrist tilted level, to backwards, will wreck your wrist; otherwise, the big Kensington track ball fixed my wrist problems after switching to it. .. but they need to look into the USB disconnect issue.

Ive used the Kensington for a few years because “ the pros” are using it. Over A year ago I tried the Magic Mouse because I was installing a new system and never went back. No issues with my wrist and I work much faster. If you insist on a trackball which I don’t recommend get a wired Logitech. I’ve used that before the Kensington and I found it much better and wished I didn’t replace it with the Kensington.

I use the Logitech M570 exclusively. Those large exposed ball-on-top trackball units have me using too many fingers and my accuracy falls off too much to use it for gaming. The Logitech is the smaller ball where I only use my thumb to move the cursor, leaving my index finger exclusively for my left and right click. I prefer the slanted hand angle of the Logitech as well. M570 paired with an ergo Logitech keyboard only requires a single USB dongle for both to work. You never get the dead spots or need to use a mouse pad either like a normal mouse. I would suggest a wrist pad though.

I am sure I will eventually come to enjoy using it, if I persevere-any tips?

I had no idea there was a new version which allows it to be wired AND wireless! Very smart, in case the wireless gets glitchy - glad I waited to buy! I wonder if that's the only difference between the old version of the Slimblade (which Dom uses) and this new updated one? 🤔

another solution is to use a WACOM USB tablet - it works for a daw also great. This pen is great for drawing automations and editing midi e.g. the advantage of the pen is that it lies naturally in the hand.

Hey Chris, considering getting a trackball. But I'm concerned about how accurate drawing MIDI CC is with one. I prefer drawing and using Cubase's predefined curves to enter CC automation. What are your thoughts on this?

I have a logitech m575, it is a trackball mouse. The designed is slightly different from the kesington's trackball, but the idea is the same. Thing is, you will adapt and it's gonna take you a day or two to learn how to do general stuff, like web browsing, etc, For those things like midi CC or whatever it takes more precision, you will need more time to get used to it. Specially the sensibility of the trackball, but all of those things are customizable.

I use the MX Ergo by Logitech. Has a footprint of a mouse for big hands. Not bad by no means. I call it the klobber though, because its just bigger than anything else I have and it could be a decent sized rock lol. I have a fair amount of gear for a home studio, but the main reason is because i have a 49 inch monitor. A super ultra wide by Samsung. My track edit and my mixer section in my daw are like miles. All that elbow and wrist moving is too much. Trackball stays in one place and works on any uneven surface. You could just recline in a chair and have the trackball if you were really just pointing and clicking. It has that feature where you can drag from one computer to another on the same wifi or paird to it via Bluetooth. You can also press a button on it and completly switch to control another computer. Not dependent on a USB dongle, but it does offer one if you don't have a computer with built in Bluetooth. I still use a regular mouse, but not for daw stuff. Gaming and Photoshop. Top Razer mouse with a high DPI and their plastic mouse pad. Its only to accommodate the monitor. That thing slides like ice and you could easly throw it if you let go.

They are reasonable for seafarers, on board of vessels where you have electronic charts and radars with graphical interface. Due to vibration underway or in strom usual mouse will fly all over the navigational bridge, while track ball won't. I doubt sound engineers have troubles with that matter.

It all comes down to precision. Making very precise selections and moves as required in media creators software does not require the hand / arm stress of any other method. Trackpad, mouse, even pencil, cannot compete. That is the bottom line for me. I have them all and can feel the difference after a long session. I keep one for travel so I’m never without it.

Any customizable, right/left-handed, wireless gaming mouse beats this every day of the week. :) Here's why: Space saving: Just use high DPI if that's a problem Wrists: These trackball mice seem to force you to permanently have your hand completely flat (not tilted), which is a problem. Also seems to continuously provoke tension in the tendons Precision: I use a high-end gaming mouse and you can't get more precise than that. Consumer/productivity mice have horrible sensors. They're super unprecise, plus the greater wireless precision on high-end gaming mice - but I can be wrong about this one! Shortcuts: You can also get that with a gaming mouse, but, guys... deep down you know that you don't need that. We have a keyboard for that. Plenty of keys to use. Coming from the guy that bought a streamdeck and realized I was still doing everything on my keyboard/mouse. Totally first world "problem solving" situations. Save your money, focus on important things. But, in any case, I don't deny the possibility of trying one of these! - Nice video, keep it up Chris
