@@trova4725 Must say I kinda agree with OP It kinda is saying a lot and saying nothing at the same time. First I think there is a misunderstanding. I guess people don't mean watching people do their taxes all day, but just how the story is written being "realistic". Like Lord of Rings feels very realistic due to the world being constructed very clearly and follows its own set up rules. And then, I think that it still makes sense why manga in SJ or most Shonen isn't realistic, he doesn't really explain anything. Like for instance of Shonen isn't realistic, of course it often will rather do the cool thing or bring characters back from the dead than the more "real" solution, because it's for teens. It's supposed to be cool, it's supposed to be fun, it's supposed to be escapism. Now that doesn't mean it cannot be differently or that the writing cannot seem believable. I think Joey has a point, but doesn't really have a good argument to back it up with.

Okay, let's look at the genre of anime here. Shounen jump is a shounen anime manga publisher. Shounen anime is literally just anime directed towards young boys. Action and adventure type anime. What young boys have you met that want to read or watch a documentary? Now how about an over the top action film? Let's have these young boys read, idk, of mice and men... Do you think they would enjoy that more than, lets say, the hunger games novels? Usually shounen jump is biased towards young boys and their interests, what would entertain them more so they'll buy more manga.
@toromisher Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I get that us western fans have a pretty western view of jump but it's still a very Japanese publication with a predominantly Japanese audience. I joke with my friends about how the shonen jump app is only like £2 a month and they all find that concept ridiculous. Most of my weeb friends don't even read manga and if they do they pirate or buy the odd tankoban. Jump is still very much trying to style their magazines after the kids that actually buy it, not the anime fans that only care about a series once it's been animated. Dunno why a bunch of 20 something's expect a literal kids magazine to become seinen just because they grew up. Like there are magazines and independent manga that are aimed at that genre that they don't read either xD

I would suggest a better explanation is that emulating realism in fiction doesn’t have anywhere near the impact visually as stylization. Realism is too complex to truly emulate as well. Specifically stylization with it’s own consistent rules for each fiction stands out exponentially more. The purpose of fiction in Eastern media is to be immersed in another world alien to our actual real world visually, and so on; however, in the West it’s the opposite: attempting to emulate realism is considered immersive to the people.

The point is Japanese generally see a fiction as fiction and fiction is not reality nor does it interact with reality. That’s why they can read or write the most unrealistic, fd up things of a story and it’s not gonna change who they are or describe what they like in real life. For the writer it’s just a job that needs to be done, for the reader it’s just fun, gripping, or suspenseful source of entertainment.

If i wanted to experience reality, i would go out and watch people walk on the street. The very reason why i like manga and anime, as well as books, movies, tv shows, videogames is because reality for the most part is boring for me and i consider it a chore i have to endure to support my lifestyle. Yes, i live to experience joy of visiting fictional worlds and sharing these adventures with heroes and narrators and i'm not ashamed of it.

@tulkasastaldo41149 ай бұрын
@@lana_del_Rei.neet- No, this is a great take actually. What people think "realism" in storytelling is, isn't actually realism. True realism is antithetical to the very concept of storytelling. Stories are always constructed in a teleological way, meaning the author has some kind of goal in mind when they tell their story. That's what makes something a story. An underlying logic that connects the sentences you put to paper both on a small and large scale. It's what distinguishes your words from the incoherent ramblings of a madman or an AI. Stories are, inevitably, all about choices, they have starting and end points, arcs for plot and characters, themes they try to address. Reality doesn't do any of that. Reality is an almost entirely disconnected sequence of events that can only be rationalized post-hoc to appear like it's even somewhat cohesive. Reality doesn't start, it doesn't end, it doesn't follow along any kind of internal logic. In reality, stuff just kinda happens. In stories, everything that happens, happens for a reason. People who bellyache about a lack of "realism" in stories are just pretentious and can't admit to themselves that creating and consuming stories is ultimately always a form of philosophical escapism from the void of meaning that is the real world. Whether the story is more fantastical or more "plain" and grounded ultimately just amounts to different flavors of the same underlying thing.

I have an issue of Shonen jump that had the first chapter of I''s, a romance manga where a high schooler spends WAY too much time working the nerve to ask out his crush, a theater geek and, scandelously, a bikini model. Granted, only the first chapter was in the issue, but the manga was published by Shonen Jump to its completion. SJ also published Strawberry 100%, about an aspiring filmmaker who unexpectedly gets a harem of girls while creating student films (and falls for the writer of his scripts, who starts out nerdy but becomes GORGEOUS by the third volume) but unfortunately the series was never completed in the states.

@vampman878 ай бұрын
@@harsvardhan6107 In Japan the manga had 19 volumes. Only 14 of those volumes were published in the US. I read the remaining chapters online on a fan translation site, and my favorite scene in the whole series, where Junpie's ex-girlfriend, Tsukasa, does a chin-up to confess that she still loves him and wants to get back together, harkening back to when he asked her out in the first chapter, was never released in an actual SJ-translated volume. The story in the US just sort of ends on a random chapter and Junpie clearly hadn't made a decision on what girl he really wanted, though the story made it clear that Aya was the most likely candidate. That made Tsukasa's confession and Junpie's ultimate decision a complete surprise.
