Been watching a few of your videos this evening. Lovely playing - I'm looking into simple mic setups for guitar and mic recording and your videos have been particularly useful, nice one thank you!

@@FabianHollandGuitar yes I have thank you. Hoping to start some recordings and music videos soon, just bought the little Zoom H2N. Lovely little thing, I travel a lot so along with my Washburn Rover, I have an ultra portable setup. I agree with you about capturing the guitar and vocals together in one go, it just seems the most natural approach

Hey Fabian, I own the same Ribbon mic. I just bought it some weeks ago .I also own a zoom h1 and had great results with it. My question is: would you use the ribbon mic for live performances as well? .for vocal and guitar. I need to do 1 in a living room setting. Many thanks !

Sorry to keep missing the live streams bud, had quite a run of Saturday night gigs recently. Enjoy playing catch up on a Sunday however. The reason I found your channel in the first place way back was your one mic approach and the videos you had released on it already. Now you have ended up being stuck with me 😂 Will be trying the “Louise” from Ear Trumpet Labs in the very near future with a one mic set up. However, I do really like the portable recorders. Have used the H2n from zoom for a while and love the H8 especially with a shotgun mic.

27:49 a video on mic positioning would be good Fabian. One issue I regularly run into with one mic set up is my voice is loud and boomy, so finding that balance with the guitar can be difficult.

Hey Scott, no problem at all. I understand a lot of people are busy on Saturday evenings. Ah yeah, let me know what you think of the Ear Trumpet Labs mic! Yeah the zoom recorders are great! I'd like to do more outside recordings in the future using the zoom and maybe in combination with an external mic.

Right on. You touched on this a few times, Fabian, but it's also fun and inspiring to gather around a single mic as a group of musicians. It feels much more natural and intimate than peering at each other through a cage of mic stands across the room. We've also found using headphones really helps with getting the balance right as you mix yourselves live. It's become our de facto way of working acoustically as a trio (guitar, banjo, fiddle, with two people singing), but we've gone as high as 8 singers and 6 instruments in a pedestrian tunel (for a version of of the traditional song "Cruel Mother"). Several of the Cowboy Junkie's early albums were recorded with one mic, I think, most famously The Trinity Sessions. Well-worth checking out. Of course all kinds of old blues/folk/county recordings would have been done with one mic, before albums even existed - Blind Willie Johnson, Skip James, the Carter Family, on and on. That's just about the best music humans have ever made, I reckon, so the method can't be half-bad. If I remember right, the first album Lightnin Hopkins made after he was rediscovered in the '60s was just some college kid holding a mic while Lightnin played on a borrowed guitar in his hotel room. The guy would keep the mic closer to his mouth while he was singing, then bring it down closer to the guitar for solos and instrumental passages. I've found small diaphragm condensers can work in a 1-person, singing and playing, 1-mic setup too. The trick is to put it nice and low and aim the beam of its pickup pattern so it crosses the area in front of the guitar or banjo or what have you on its way to pointing at my mouth. It's not quite as natural or comfortable as working with a large-diaphragm mic - I have to really concentrate on keeping my head still and pointed at the mic. But it's definitely workable and, say, less prone to live feedback because of that tighter pickup pattern.

Hi, thanks for the comment. Oh yeah absolutely! Loads of these early recordings were done with one mic and all in one take as well. Yeah for sure, using multiple instruments can absolutely work, I see lots of bluegrass bands doing it this way. I’d love to experiment with recording with other musicians with one mic, something for the future! Interesting about the small diaphragm condenser. Have you ever tried a stereo mic? There’s a few ribbon stereo mics out there which would be perfect for recording multiple musicians spread around a room with the mic in the middle of the room.

@@FabianHollandGuitar Right on! Well...I have one stereo mic, the Audio-Technica 2022, which is mostly for field recording. It would be interesting to try it as a single mic for music, but it's very bright - not my taste for music - and a bit of a pain to get into a conventional recorder - it wants to send stereo out via 3.5mm headphone cable. So I've only experimented with it as a room mic. And fwiw, I thought that bright texture suited banjo. But for anything else I've tried, a couple of small condensers set up as boundary mics on the walls to give a stereo room sound a lot better to my ears. Adding those to a single close mic is the most natural and relative simple sound I've hit upon yet. (Could prob share some recording experiments if that was of interest - it's a recent exciting discovery, so I'm probably just droning on too long about it.) Stereo really makes a sound come alive and feel real, I think! We do experience reality in stereo through two ears after all. Your idea of single stereo ribbon mic sounds pretty ideal to me. These are the double ribbons, with each capsule picking up in a figure 8 pattern, yeah, so in principle that one mic could catch 360 degrees? I do dig the sound of ribbons a lot, to judge by this cheap ART one I've messed around with (ART's the house brand of Canada's biggest music store chain) and listening to a lof of youtube videos of good quality ones.

Check out the "Samson G Track Pro" it is a USB microphone. It hat has two separate inputs and acts as a interface as well. It also allows you to record in mono or stereo.

Sounds great! You seem to have a great balance between guitar and vocals can be a problem if you have a very loud singer and plays soft or visa versa. Obviously theres lots of old albums done with one mic every one baanced lin the room around one mic, one of my favourites is Chris Whitley Dirt Floor is one stereo mic hanging from the rafters in a barn to help vibrations from the floor

Thanks Fabian! I just bought a couple of active Ribbon Mics by the company Golden Age. They are quite inexpensive. I will let you know how they sound in an stereo set up for vocal and guitar capture at the same time, I really appreciate your showing us the gain staging you use, reverb application and mic set up. Cheers!

Thanks Fabian .. I like to record XY stereo, guitar and vocal as one unit. I place mics about chin level..It is a natural sound! Loved the beautiful rendition you did of "Nobody's fault but mine" The sound was pure and true (your vocals and guitar)! That ribbon mic is awesome! I would like to betr a stereo version! A good follow up might be a discussion about how to add any compression or effects since the voice and guitar have different compression and EQ needs (perhaps no EQ or Compression). Nylon Strings and Steel strings are not the same of course compression wise. I find the comression setting for nylon strings is closer to voice than steel strings.. I use some slight spot comression to tame the levels just slightly. It in interesting subject and like you, feel my singing and playing are very inter-twined. A very good album recorded with one Stereo ribbon mic is "Dirt Floor" by the late Chris Whitely. Thanks again Fabian! - Bill.. PS, that one mic series is excellent.

HI Fabian. Mostly a Rode matched pair of NT-5 mics (small diaphragms but with surprising low end presence for picking up vocals) ...I set the XY configuration up at about chin level and two feet way. I usually use a mackie blackjack two channel usb audio interface into Garageband and add a little rever and soft knee compression.

Hey Fabian, would be really glad about your opinion as you own at least 2 of my selection!:) I want to buy a mic for guitar, i like as perfect as it possible sound, but I'm not professional, only for home learning use. Maybe later for vids, but later... I have a budget for one Neumann Km 184 or Soyuz 013 or Austian Audio CC8. I know that you prefer Km184 with light difference more, but interesting part about soyuz... Maybe did you try it? The second question is does it make sence to buy only one good mic and later get second for stereo (same) or directly buy a cheaper pair like oktavas 012, but stereo? Just dont wanna doint sell-buy-sell-buy job later ;( Maaaybe, it will be possible to find used CC8 for a pair, but it will be hard to do thanks for any advise! :) Really tend to try out the soyuz, but dont have exp and I physically wont be able to understand how good or bad is it in my room. btw - goal is only one guitar for fingerstyle, no mix at all ^^

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I haven't had a chance to reply to comments because of the holidays but I'm getting through them now. If i was in your shoes I would buy one Km184 over a cheaper stereo pair. I've used one mic on the guitar with every album that I've recorded and It's been enough for me. Bear in mind though my situation is different to yours, I'm recording guitar and vocals together so I've always felt that having a stereo pair of mics and a vocal mic is a little too much. I haven't tried the Soyuz unfortunately so I can't tell you about that. The CC8 is also really great for the price! If you want a very clean, transparent sound then the km184 is great for that but if you want a slightly more warm, coloured sound then the CC8 is the one! Hope that helps? thanks! Let me know if you have any more questions!

@@FabianHollandGuitar thanks for answer a lot! :) Yeah, I think I will go with KM184. Now I just thinking about waiting and buying a Pair or just buy one right now. The goal, which I want to achive is to make a recording like Eddie or Eiro (you know whem probably :D) just for solo accoustic fingerstyle, no any mixes, no vocal etc. and here comes to the question of "one mic and fake stereo, like double the track, pan it to 70% left 70% right and making delay of few miliseconds". It provides really good results so far compare just to mono. Or "True stereo with 2 mics". I would use 2 mics ofc, if I really needed that, but I'm not commercial, only as my little passion hobby :D So it means 95% of time I wont use the second mic. First one will be used for everything at least. But if its not possible to achive the results like those 2 person metioned above, I would probably save money, eat rise and buy them 🤣 What do you think? ^^ and thanks again!
