Renault’s Formula 1 team warned the world it would have a tough start to 2024 when the new Alpine A524 was launched.
But when team principal Bruno Famin said it was going to be difficult, even he can’t have known just how bad it was going to get.
The evidence is clear - Alpine is dead last.
To add to the sense of woe engulfing this team, technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer have resigned, and this has led to a hasty restructure of the technical leadership of the team.

@@Lianpe98 To be fair though. The McLaren-Honda partnership was actually good on paper. It's just that both didn't gel well during their time together and both are at fault. In my opinion though, more on McLaren's zero-size concept and some egotistical decisions behind Honda's back like changing the fuel supplier, etc. Both decided to just ditch the project altogether. They knew where the pen stopped. Now, look at where they both are now. Meanwhile, Alpine Renault just doesn't know where to stop or find where the issue is. Every season it's like they don't know where the goalpost is. lmao.

@@NicotineRosbergbecause it's got too much history. we need to preserve teams like this even if they are going through a bad period. (Remember Williams last 7-8 years). F1 cannot afford to loose big manufacturers because nobody wants a grid full of kick saubers or visa cash app type of teams.

@@NicotineRosberg Because Renault can never be seen as a luxury or sports brand (which are pretty profitable for specialised manufacturers these days), which is why they resurrected Alpine. That and their focus towards EVs. But the name Alpine is barely known outside of the national borders. Alpine is thus trying to promote its name through racing. Considering how little known it is, selling Alpine F1 almost implies abandoning the brand and ambitions that go with it altogether. Plus, the value of having an F1 slot has increased considerably, as the whole Andretti episode shows. Finally, Renault has quite a bit of history with F1, whereas PSA is perceived through its WRC/Le Mans performances.

Gene Haas does not want to spend money to build proper infrastructure like every other team. HAAS F1 team's operation is split into 3 separate bases, the main in the USA, another in the UK and the last in Italy with their partnership with Ferrari. Only RB has multiple locations (One in the UK and the other in Italy) but even then they are moving into the RedBull campus. Proper infrastructure is required for modern formula one and HAAS have the equivalent of a early 2000s setup. Communication is slow between their locations and hence development is slow too. Everything is slow when you have to travel across the world to meet the separate locations. @@Isanion

I think Renault's commitment to F1 disintegrated when they changed the name of the team to Alpine in 2021, a clear sign that a car manufacturer is hedging its bets, which in the real world means it is no longer a priority and is likely to fail due to lack of funding. The fact that so many senior people have left in recent years simply corroborates that. Nobody can doubt Renault's commitment to the sport over the years, but I think that's likely to be only as a power unit supplier going forward.

Stages of Renault misses. 1. Cyril TP 2. Fred Vasseur leaves - should have been TP 3. Not keeping Sainz - there was a good balance with Hulk and Sainz 4. Signing Ric - valuable money for car dev. lost 5. Dropping Hulk - Matched Ric and fired because he wasnt French 6. Signing Ocon - Cost them Alonso aswell 7. Not firing Cyril fast enough 8. Not giving Alonso or Piastri a contract 9. Not giving Otmar enough time. 10. They want to make it french. No one wants that.

It should be obvious national teams don’t work. Just look at Ferrari for example, ever since they switched back to an all Italian team behind the scenes, they have not won a single championship. Now that Vasseur is TP, we all see some stuff improving and Ferrari getting competitive.

Cyril had a lot of constraints to deal with, there's a french interview where he talks about it. Not everything that happened to Renault back in the days is Cyril's fault
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 3 ай бұрын
What's wrong with Cyril as TP? It was unwise to waste $20m p/a on Ricciardo, but Ferrari will be wasting $100m p/a on Hamilton so it's not out of the ordinary. The inability to have a budget to match or exceed Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes and invest heavily in facilities while it was still unrestricted, was out of Abiteboul's hands. If Renault Sport F1's budget wasn't so limited compared to top teams, then $20m here or there for Ricciardo wouldn't matter. Renault never brought the attitude to win at any cost like Mercedes - neither on the power unit nor on the chassis!

3:14 Why is the Qualy 2 the metric used for a graph that is titled Gran Prix pace? GP Pace surely must be either the best racing lap or average pace of the best car in each team, i.e. maximised data for that car under race conditions. Picking a qualy 2 time where there is no incentive to be the fastest makes no sense, you just have to be in the top 10. I'd argue average race pace is the better metric because that is what wins races, fastest lap is largely meaningless, HASS used to provide spectacular single lap pace, but it's still a rubbish race car. Ferrari didn't win the GP, it didn't get the best lap in the race, so it can't have the best pace.

3:15 the fact that Williams is 1.1% off and for reference in Singapore last year Red Bull were almost that far off shows that ironically, bringing everyone closer in pace means no one has enough of an advantage to actually overtake or suddenly spring a surprise. If a team starts a year strongly it's done. The drivers are also incredibly almost robotic, metronomic in their driving. So we can forget the good old days (2003-2013) coming back.

What on earth is going on with that rear suspension? That's the first time I've seen it, and I can't imagine how that works. The forces that act on it have to be terribly out of balance, and the natural inherent movements can't be in sync (suspensions have inherent tendencies based on their geometry). Hopefully, it's just the angle the photo was taken from, but if not... this is going to be a long season and off-season due to a potentially expensive rework and lost time.

As a McLaren fan I’m glad they’re improving but I forgot how much they sucked at Bahrain last year. I really hope they improve a lot throughout the season like last year. If they improve as much as they did last year, maybe they can catch Red Bull towards the end of the season.

Having the car with arguably the least paint on it and still being significantly over the weight limit. Having a PU that is "significantly down on power" to the others by fault of none but your own. Fumbling the contracts not only of two-time champion Fernando Alonso, but also of house-raised junior Oscar Piastri. Setting ambitious goals and then failing spectacular at even remotely meeting these goals. A privateer may do all these things and it still might be accepted. But this is a works team we are talking about. The only word that fits this situation is: Pathetic.
