Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is here to dethrone Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon as the new biggest show on TV. But did it? The seasons are still ongoing I guess, but based on the pilot episode, House of the Dragon comes on top. Which is strange because both shows feature a lot of the fantasy elements. So in today's episode of One v One, let's compare these two shows with each other to see how the fantasy side of House of the Dragon is handled in such a way that it's much easier for casual audiences to get into the story... than compared to Rings of Power.

This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence rings of power vs house of the dragon rings of power bad show good show trash house of the dragon good show bad show trash rings of power watch free online free house of the dragon watch free online free shocking moments only action pilot episodes is house of the dragon better than rings of power of evil to Middle-earth. The Game of Thrones universe always centered their stories around human emotion and motivation. It was their driving force and they captivate you with moments like the iron throne scene in episode 8. It's really simple without any context, but since they pulled you into the emotions and motivations of Viserys, you also felt emotional. Rings of Power didn't just lack any of that, they avoided it in any way shape or form.

That's the sole reason why GoT got it's traction in the first place. High peaks of season 1 for both shows: RoP : 3 small ships of Valinorans carrying 300 warriors + (minimum) 300 horses + food, tents and other equipment engage "Deus ex Machina" style "epic battle" with a couple of hundred Orcs in a small village that represents whole region of Southlands, slicing down scores of enemies with a CHAIN HANDHELD BY A COUPLE OF HORSEMEN (!!!) and being victorious, of course, followed by threat of genocide of the whole race spoken by a lead "hero". HoTD: A single man, rotten by leprosy, physically half-dead king makes an agonizing last grand entrance and walk of pure pain to save his kingdom and heritage. No contest between the two.

That's not really accurate in this case, since Rings was advertised as Game of Thrones with elves. I might go back to RoP eventually, but I was hit hard in the first episode with a strong case of "this narration would have made a kick-ass first season". Actually feeling the pain of seeing the glow-trees dying, the hardships of battles in Middle Earth, know the brother better and feel his loss. Feel anger at Sauron for him being evil and not just because he is the bad guy in a well-known franchise. Yeah, that would have been great. Instead it all happens in two minutes and we spend long periods of hobbits doing nothing of any importance.

When they invest too much money, the producers get scared of losing it and instead of letting the creatives in charge of the script do their work, they have to get in and play safe. It's fine to have "mystery" and "cliffhangers" of course as I LOVE those, just as much as many other people but it's just a matter on HOW it's done as we should care about the characters first and foremost before heading straight into any plotpoint or gradually develop the characters AS we're heading into every single new plotpoint.

Completely agree. This comes to prove franchises are worth nothing with poor writing. Another con in ROP, to me, is that they use super famous characters, like Elrond and Galadriel, and change the lore completely. Meaning they didn't even take advantage of having such well-known chars to build their story upon. Instead of bringing new chars, like HOTD, they twisted canon names and left many scratching their heads, myself included. Like, Galadriel single and in armor in the Second Age? She was living with Celeborn in some woods by then and couldn't care less about war. I know strong female leads are the trend, but hey, they could have spent a few of their zillion dollars on a good writer with a slight idea about the franchise world, right?

Honestly, while I’m someone who prefers holding to the lore as well, I would’ve been content with these famous characters being *consistent* with how they’ve already been established. We know they’re both over one thousands of years old, so it seems very unlikely they (particularly Galadriel) would act SO stupid, hasty and belligerent. Their personalities would have long since established, and it just seems super unlikely that a stupid, hasty, belligerent elf would chill to become glowy-glowy mirror queen after another thousand years. I mean, maybe elven personalities develop and change waaaaaaaay slower than humans, heck if I know. This show just has a lot of problems.

It's incredibly hard to get invested in a story or its characters if the only reason they seem to do or say anything is to advance to the next plot point/location, which is the primary problem with RoP. EDIT: Just got to minute 14 where you say basically the same thing. Good!

Well, now that we have the bigger picture, that bezos' show got progressively worse, and House got progressively better, we can confirm much of what's been said here. The reason for House's success is not exactly the fantasy elements, it's the characters and the amazing story. One of their most incredible series is just king viserys walking to a throne, because of how invested we are in the characters. There were no dragons in that scene. P.S.: House is pretty good so far. It's game of thrones, so we kinda have to wait and see how it ends before we go around calling it the GOAT

Each moment portrayed in HotD is impactful. Any actions taken by the characters have consequences later in the show. And the story becomes progressively better and more engaging with each episode. The fantasy material is like a cherry on top but the main point of the story is still very human. Both had lead female protagonist yet Rop felt like a washed out version of female empowering show in contrast to HotD where they showed both the fmc's strengths and struggles. Rop should have invested more in the writing department rather than cgi.

RoP wants you to relate Gal, but in a "why isn't anyone listening to her?" kinda way. Gilgalad and all the other elves just don't want to believe despite the fact she did discover something. She (Gal) doesn't help her case, because she can only be snarky and stubborn. Any opposition to her plan get a scornful look from her and attempts to force you to see her way. She acts in the dumbest, least diplomatic manner but we're supposed to feel like it's all warranted because she's right about Sauron and everyone is just prejudiced against elves. If she was confronted about her behavior, it could be made into a character development arc. Like rebellious teenager turns into strong leader when she learns to be less arrogant. Why not? Though she's supposed to be already hundreds of years old and a commander of armies, while being incapable of any diplomacy or leadership...

I freaking love the female protagonists of HotD. Unlike your generic boring feminist garbage, they've made EVERY character grey and morally ambiguous. You root for people but are reminded of their faults. You loathe people but then you are reminded of their well-doings. Both Alicent and Rhaenyra have positive and negative aspects to their personality. As the video said, they're more human than fantasy, and I freaking love that.

So many movies/shows have been ruined by the obsession with MYSTERY BOXES. If you want the audience to follow the story, you need to reveal the character motivations. You need to show the step by step progress towards their goal. The problem is I didn't know the trench was gonna be used to explode the volcano. So all that time spent building it, I wasn't following anything. I didn't know what it was for, who was building it, and why they're building it. That's a sure way to bore the audience.

Actually, something I noticed is that Filmento was able to explain the story of HOTD without explaining all the fantasy elements (man, he didn't even explain what dragons have to do with the story). Whereas in RoP he was forced to explain a lot of fantasy background to tell what the story is about. I don't know if HOTD could integrate the fantasy elements a little more into its story and not just leave it as a background (and if that is better or not), but it definitely shows the priorities of the show.
@hypothalapotamus5293
@hypothalapotamus5293 Жыл бұрын
GRRM's stories are anthropocentric. If you understand people, you understand why GRRM's characters do what they do. The fantasy elements are mostly of interest in how they alter human behavior. HOTD focuses heavily on the Targaryen family tree, whose structure is heavily influenced by fantasy elements. The power to control dragons is the reason for their godlike status and rule, but it is dangerous if it turns against itself (dragon riders have way too much power and this has a destabilizing effect). Incestuous marriages are as much to keep dragon power united as to keep a pure Valyrian bloodline. The first half of the season is devoted to most sane individuals (e.g. Lyonel Strong) trying to reunite Jahaerys' legitimate descendants through marriage (The Velaryons are descended from the first son Aemon, while Rhaenyra is descended from Baelon and Daella), but these efforts lead to general unhappiness (characters are not compatible with these rational requirements) and are thwarted when Viserys makes a hightower branch with a competing claim. In contrast to this careful interplay between human and fantasy elements, we have ROP which is devoid of humanity and has lore that isn't really canon.

More than any other genre, I believe fantasy can suffer from excessive worldbuilding. Some writers become so obsessed with the world they created that the world stops telling the story and the story starts telling the world. This appears to be the chief trap RoP fell into that Hot D avoided. Granted, this problem usually applies to high schoolers cranking out their first Wheel of Time ripoff, not billion dollar TV shows, but that’s neither here nor there.
@AlirioAguero2
@AlirioAguero2 Жыл бұрын
Sure, there is a fine line between an overdone and an underdeveloped worldbuilding in fantasy, and the author needs to know where that line is. Show too little, and the characters will seem to float within an empty world, only interacting with characters and objects that are somehow crucial to the plot. There will be no intrigue to hook the audience to find out more about this world. On the other hand, when the plot is crammed with too much information and too much sub-plots, one will get confused and give-up on investing into that world.

I feel like you could make the less personal approach work, as long as you actually take the time to make your audience invested in the world instead, which RoP failed to do. For example: why would we care about Valinor? As RoP portrayed it, Valinor just seemed like a normal place with some nice trees. I mean, introducing it with a scene about bullying, didn't exactly make it feel like paradise. And yet it's the only scene we got about daily live in what is supposed to be like heaven for the elves. It makes the destruction of the trees as well as Galadriel's choice to not go back so much less impactfull. They did try to make you care about Harfoot society though, which might have been nice, if they didn't undermine all of the "hearts bigger than our feet" stuff with unnecessary cruelty, every time the plot demanded it. You want to help this confused old man, you found alone in the forest? Well, how about we doom your entire family to certain death instead? Very big hearts indeed... They also tried a bit with Numenor, which I actually think they did a good job with in the third episode. Then came the "elves are taking our jobs" speech and it all went downhill from there. Just pretty disappointing over all.

It's a family drama that just so happens to take place in Westeros, and just so happens to have dragons, which is the spectacle. The show doesn't rely on the spectacle as a crutch. And for some people spectacle is enough. And for others, they're more invested in the story. That's fine if you're in one camp, or in the other, or both for that matter. And it's also fine if you don't like one, or the other, or dislike both shows.

Oh the reason for me is very simple. (This took effort to write so pls read) One show pays respect to the source material and the fans. Takes criticism in a healthy way. Doesn't have any personal or political agenda which changes entire characteristics of characters. And builds upon what came before. The other "fixes" the source material by forcefully putting in agendas that don't belong. Alters characters to suit their story (Galadriel is the only competent warrior in the whole show, every other "male" character is either an idiot or incompetent buffoon). It also attacks any criticism by calling it racist, sexist, etc. Heavily motivated by political agendas to the point it sacrifices story, character and immersion. And lastly, destroys what came before it. Lets take a look at two things that ROP tried hard but failed miserbly. *Representation* Lets take a simple example shall we? *Colored people* (Because I'm colored myself). House of dragons does representation according to the source material, it doesn't just magically race swap characters or anything of the kind, there's still good representation there done right. ROP however changed skin colors of already established race that doesn't make sense lore wise, location wise or story wise. Because ROP is a prequel with black elves and black dwarves, are you suggesting that before the peter jackson movies there was a genocide where only black elves and dwarves were killed??? Because in those movies there are only white dwarves and elves. *Women empowerment* Theres also another angle of *"feminism and women empowerment"* which again, house of dragons does right. It doesn't make men suddenly incompetent to show the strength of their female characters. However in ROP male characters are made to be utter buffoons and incompetent idiots who cant even swing a sword. Also it doesn't make sense cuz she wasn't established as this warrior woman character all in the movies that came before. If you have to make men incompetent to make your female characters shine, all you're doing is saying that your female characters will be incompetent around competent male characters.

This is actually a brilliant take, especially with the black dwarves and how the show being a prequel rubbishes that. And my god, for all the empowerment they sought to make Galadriel stand for, all they ended up with was a character who's just so annoying, you just want Sauron to take her out.

Glad I’m not the only one who was off put by the unintentionally implied ethnic cleansing of Middle Earth. Diversity is great, but if they wanted to tell a diverse story, they could have and should have explored area outside of Middle Earth. If that wouldn’t be marketable enough, they could have had characters from the eastern lands of Rhûn. A foreigner’s perspective on Middle Earth could have been endlessly fascinating.

I didn’t watch ROP, but HOD did some race swapping and adding a more diverse cast. And to good effect. In the end, it’s all about writing. The race and gender doesn’t matter. You just need to write a good story. ROP problem isn’t race or gender or anything political. If they kept everyone white, what would that have fixed? If they made the main character male, but kept everyone else the same would that have made this a better show? You’re focusing on effects of the bad writing as the source, rather than a symptom.

The most important reason is 'cause GRRM wrote an awesome story with a fantastic lore. HOTD is based on the book fire and blood which was written by the original writer of the series. That is why the writing is good and the show works. Tolkien's world building and lore is rich but lacks the original magic that he could have provided and the writers on the show are not on par with is. Just look at what D&D did with the last season of GOT. They butchered the outline 'cause they did not have GRRM's writing and his pacing to guide them. LOTR is supposed to be light vs dark, good vs evil and has very clear white and black sides which is what Tolkien wanted and it works brilliantly for his time meanwhile GRRM lowkey propelled morally corrupt characters and a world of brutality where no side is right and commit atrocities in the fantasy genre. There is no clear cut good guy in his stories and that is what people want these days. Take HOTD for example. Both the fractions are absolutely horrible and no one is doing anything for the actual people of the realm, their subjects. If they made the greens a clear cut cardboard villain and the blacks the feminist girl boss then it won't work. For the story to work, you need to find both sides compelling. The greens and the blacks conflict makes sense 'cause the dance was unavoidable and would have happened no matter what. You hate the characters yet defend them. Daemon and Aemond are absolute psychopaths who commit mass genocides yet are the fan favourite. They are the bad guys of both the fraction yet stand out. It's the complexities and nuances that stand out.

I think it's not the problem with fantasy story vs human story but with generally poor execution of that fantasy. The thing with fantastic themes is that they should rather be used as a representation of universal truth than just a fancy addition to the "regular story". Although I really like HotD, I must admit that there is no reason for it to be fantasy, other than making series more spectacular and expensive. On the other hand, stories like LOTR couldn't be told in any other way that as a fantasy because they are about universal truth that don't manifest in such an obvious way in normal life. Yet still, they all feel very natural because we can almost instinctively acknowledge them as true. When we see the magic Ring that corrupts its user by offering them power, we just accept it because we know that that's how evil works. When we see Hobbits who go on an extremely painful journey in order to save the world, we accept that because we know that that's how the important things work - they need suffering in order to accomplish. So the difference between HotD and LOTR is the scope. The first one is about particular characters, the second one is about universal manifestation of human traits. The problem with the Rings of Power is that they don't do any of that things. The things are happening there just because the writer wanted them to happen. The characters don't resemble the particular character that we could meet in everyday life nor they are the manifestation of some greater ideas. There is a lot of fantasy elements but eventually they don't mean anything. They are just pretty pictures without any weight.

It’s understandable that Tolkien purists are upset with her characterisation, but for general audiences who are not heavily invested in the books, it’s an interesting choice and the beginning of a character arc that may payoff once she learns to set aside her pride and need to be in control.👍🏾

@@nanakwameasiedu-amponsah1405 except that's something you set up a human character to do with their development, galadriel is a fucking elf, tolkien made elves to literally be an ethereal sort of being, with some of the best of them still failing to corruption, greed, pride, arrogance hell, even murder sometimss, but the focus was never or ever supposed to be on their failings, but rather how they persevered, resisted, and utterly fought back against the ultimate source and one responsible for sowing, fermenting, and breeding their evils, their failings and the ruination of their sacred blessed home and them as a people The elves and the elven characters Tolkien focused on at the point we see them in the lord of the rings, hell, even by the second age, they had had so many centuries if not thousands of years to work on the failings that landed them all on the shores of Middle earth in the first place, pride and paranoia for lack of control are some of the last things we should be seeing as the main focus of the character in how we the audience views their struggles

Well, I'm not familiar with LOTR books and lore but the way Galadriel's "rebel" in the show is so cringe to me. At least Rhaenyra showed how she rebels like a regular teenager since her younger version was a teenager but the way Galadriel rebels is totally cringe. She acts like knows-it-all, bossy, and think she can do better than any men and she's supposed to be a grown ass woman, how embarrasing. Then, I found that the writers of ROP have no idea about Tolkien in generals while HOTD have George R.R Martin as head writers so, they have more advantages.

It feels like Rings of Power was more indulged in their massive budget and the picture quality that was rooted from it where as HotD feels well oiled and passionate with the character development. Daemon did more in one, dialogue-less scene then most shows and even film could ever do. I find myself feeling empathetic for the “villains”, and it’s crazy that the characters are so complex that yes, it’s obvious who is “villainous” and who isn’t quite, yet I still feel myself feeling for them because of how intricate they have been developed in 1 single season.
