Very interesting! My only experience with Rose was Street Fighter 4, in which she had basically *none* of these tools, so I was really wondering what was so great about a character that from my perspective really only had a fireball, a DP, a reflect and an advancing attack. I'm hoping they do her like they did poison in SF5, a full overhaul of her kit with a clear direction. Maybe bring back some of that alpha 2 magic.

this definition of polarizing is EXACTLY why Bayonetta was such a problem in Smash 4 apart from her infamous guaranteed death combos out of anything, two unique mechanics of hers that really stand out are Witch Time and Bat Within. For those not familiar with Smash 4, Witch Time is a counter special move that slows down time if you hit it, granting her a huge punish and a combo starter out of anything, even safe moves like jabs or spaced aerials; and Bat Within is a unique property given to her air dodges, rolls, and spotdodges/sidesteps where she got extra defensive frames out of them but these frames would trigger "Bat Within", which teleported her into a direction in exchange for a bit of the attack's damage. These tools, in the context of Smash 4's meta, worked together in nasty fashion to shut down the game's offense - Bat Within's extra frames and special mechanic allowed her to escape the game's highly frametrap-centric offense, and Witch Time was always there to punish you for trying to continue combos or pressure beyond what was 100% guaranteed, no matter how risk-free it would be against any other character (and "true" combos were somewhat rare and limited in Smash 4). If you were lucky, your character could navigate around Bat Within with anti-Bayo frame traps that could catch Bat Within; if you weren't, it's likely that your character got squat and just had to deal with immensely diminished pressure. And don't even think about going for reads to circumvent that - when I said Witch Time could net her huge punishes, I wasn't kidding, she can reliably kill you from almost any percentage out of that (including zero). At the time, everyone (especially Bayo mains) loved to say that Bayonetta had "bad neutral" - and while it's true that her neutral and footsies tools were slightly below average, especially compared to the top tiers, it missed the point that her >entire moveset< heavily skewed neutral in her favor. Whenever she could open you up, you might just lose a stock, and whenever you open her up, YOU might just lose a stock too, unless you cut your combos dramatically short and sacrifice damage and stage positioning in exchange for not having to deal with Witch Time. Her extremely polarizing advantage and disadvantage states alike bled even into how neutral played out since she could take a lot more risks and it really compensated for her "bad tools", and that's something people even today will fail to recognize.
@jimbo52663 жыл бұрын
Nice explanation. Makes sense that "bad neutral" isn't that much of a weakness when the character's "disadvantage state" is hardly disadvantaged at all.
@Marcusjnmc3 жыл бұрын
*guaranteed death combos out of anything pre patch (always has to be said imo)
@lia67713 жыл бұрын
well yeah, but i'd say going from "guaranteed death combos" to "extremely potent punish game that can kill from any opening (but not guaranteed)" isn't that rough of a downgrade. Let's not forget that Bayo had great mixup potential and her combos were extremely universal due to some of her hitboxes nullifying DI.

Your reasoning at the end made me think of Yoshimitsu in Tekken. He's the only character with a 6 frame move in his Flash, so you have to be really careful cuz he can interrupt or punish things you'd normally just throw out. His flash is launch punishable however, so it creates this really lovely dynamic of anticipating it. I love facing Yoshis because of it

@big_azzy3 жыл бұрын
Like Midori from Fantasy Strike, who gets that same concept whenever he lands his counter?
@AuntBibby3 жыл бұрын
@@big_azzy ya!!! Midori is one way of making a character out of that mechanic... but i meant it would be an entire separate stance the character could go into at will, via a special move input. like, theyd have an automatically-commandgrabbing-when-in-range stance, and an automatically-antiairgrabbing-when-the-opponent-jumps stance... perhaps quartercircle-back+kick for the former and quartercircle-back+punch for the latter. they could move left and right slowly while in each stance, or cancel out of it by pressing a button. both stances would look exactly the same (so that the opponent couldn’t tell when they should be jumping and when they should be staying on the ground, _except_ by guessing the intention of the opponent, just like with a regular grappler mixup). the EX version of the commandgrab-stance would give it 1 hit of super armor until it was cancelled or went into a commndgrab, and the EX version of the antiairgrab-stance would give it invincibility to all aerial/overhead attacks until it was cancelled or went into an antiairgrab.

Personally, I'd love to see her do a Gandalf thing. Get into a state where Bison really does just about kill her unseen in a major fight - only to have her return as The White Rose, now Bison's superior in power and as absolutely committed to goodness as he is to evil, rather than always being the weakling good shadow. Not her becoming the new villain, but her permanently being Bison's final boss and repeatedly him complaining about how any use of his psycho-power to harm someone is undone by her bolstered soul-power. That would frost his cookies to no end.

I disagree. Knowledge Check characters are more prevalent than I remember in a long time, due to zoning and footsies being so bad in modern games, while execution has become easier. This means that modern games emphasize system knowledge and tech, over fundamentals and execution. Fighting games have become more about knowing how to play the matchup, and less about playing the opponent. If characters have been so homogenized that there's only one optimal way to play a character, and execution has become so easy my dog can do a bnb combo, then knowledge checks are the only thing keeping fighting games from being random guessing. Defensive characters, however, are becoming increasingly rare, knowledge check or not. Especially in the non-zoner variety. New school players don't get wowed by having strong anti-air normals and high damage safe pokes in the same way they do when they get yet another 50/50 setup, pressure tool, or flashy combo extender.

I'd love to see a full video on Baiken (in the games where she could alpha counter). She never felt top-tier but was interesting to fight against!

Alpha 2 is still, to this day the best Street Fighter game ever made: the game mechanics were unrivalled, each character's storyline's were interesting and fleshed, the opening, the artwork, the graphics, the characters, everything about it was perfection.

The closest example of a character of such an archetype from SFV I can think of is Kolin. She has multiple unique defensive options (the parry, V-Skill counter) that force really button happy characters (like M.Bison, Dhalsim) to approach her differently.

This reminds me of Melee's most polarising character: Puff. Her defensive options are some of the best, being able to stall in the air essentially as long as she wants. She's super light, so regular combos typically stop working way earlier than they normally would. Rest is basically an instant KO if she reads you with it or manages to hit it in the middle of your own combo, and her up throw combos into it at the beginning of the match
