Why selective breeding is harming our pets

Business Insider spoke with John Bradshaw, anthrozoologist and author of "The Animals Among Us," about how humans are breeding cats and dogs to look like babies and how it is making them suffer.
Mr Bradshaw said; "The human response to cuteness is something which has evolved as a way of making sure that we look after our own babies, but our species is unique in that our response to cuteness extends to other species as well."
"One of the trends we’re seeing in pet keeping over the past couple of decades is the increasing popularity of very small dogs and also dogs and cats with very squashed faces. Now all of those are characteristics which are also characteristics of infants."

I always prefferd dogs and cats that look more... natural. The squashed faces are sort of ugly (not to mention the real health problems linked to those features).

Yeah i've heard how pug dogs breath and it's just painful to hear how they struggle to do something so normal.

I am just wondering, who the hell would want a pug? They are so ugly. I like dogs that look natural, a fine-tuned machine designed to catch and kill prey. Not some tiny dog that could barely pick up a stick with its mouth and face that looks like it has been sat on.

Some people are interested in lap dogs or dogs that don’t usually hunt and are just calm

@@jorden6406 but there are lap dogs who don't have breathing problems, like Pomeranians and chihuahuas.

No, I actually prefer breeds like the German Shorthaired Pointer. That breed was breed for the exact opposite of pugs, that is, hunting.

@@jadenmurray1325 I don't care. It's selective breeding and it's wrong. They have less health problems than pugs, they are still freaks of nature.

I’ve got a jug. (Pug Jack Russell) her face isn’t flat and she’s never had a problem with breathing. Stop breeding purebred pugs, crossbreeds are just as cute and can actually breathe

Dumbest thing I’ve seen. Selective breeding is useful for creating working breeds with certain builds useful for different tasks along with the required temperament. What you’re talking about is selective breeding done wrong.

Not to be rude, but how often are we breeding our pets for working purposes. There are a few dog breeds that are work dogs. Honestly, a dream of mine would be to have an Australian Shepherd or a Collie, but the reality is that a majority of pets are breed for their looks and that is what this guy is standing against as it often creates animals with deformities or genetics prone to disease or disabilities. Even dogs breed for work often have increased joint pain and things like that because their body is not prepared to deal with their large frame or other aspects of their body. Think of Andre the Giant, a human example. He was really large and it was cool, but he died young. I loved him in the Princess Bride. His fate was sad. He didn't get to live a normal life. Now, let's breed a bunch more people like him because he was super strong and tall and thats cool! No. That's rediculous. Animals are different from humans, I'm not saying it's an equivalent. I do think the 2 are comparable tho. Don't breed for "positive" traits at the expense of all these problems that come along with them.

@Naomi Ekberg one dog breed bred specifically for working is the German Shorthaired Pointer. One of the smartest and best hunting dogs in the world.

I’ve had 2 pugs and neither of them had breathing problems. They were pretty healthy and died naturally. I can understand that breeding them to look like that in the first place is mean. But they exist now. I just don’t want people to stop adopting them and then they’re bred and just neglected or killed by their breeders.

It depends on how they're bred too. Healthy pugs who are bred and people who mix something else into the genetic line help keep pugs healthy. If you don't breed the unhealthy ones you're selectively breeding the correct way.

They can breed out this characteristics, fortunately, with retro pugs or other long snout dogs.
