The weekend warrior: the cyclists too busy to ride during the week, so they do long weekend rides to "get the miles in." But here's why short daily bike rides beat long weekend rides.

I like short rides and long rides. It's nice to get out on the bike every day, which are the short rides. But it's also nice to do a really long ride and just completely disconnect from the world and focus on pedaling.

I do a ride every morning to the grocery store. I buy my groceries one back pack at a time. That is the impetus to purpose the daily rides. Not long but every day. I also gave up the car during covid and love it.

Congrats Bro on the Engagement 😁 I’m trying to ride everyday but the weather bums me out sometimes, Especially this damn 30mph gusts and a constant 15mph headwind, And lower 40 upper 30’s morning commute, Feels like my knees are aging faster than ever. But yeah, glad I have a 6 miles commute everyday, now I just have to add more miles to try to get improvements. 😁

i'm probably riding less than 10 miles a day for my daily nonsense--but it makes the longer weekend rides feel so great! i get stuck in the same routine on the same roads, but then, wham! i can go on a nice, longer ride that i needed all of that silly, shorter conditioning for anyway.

I used to ride every day to work for a couple of years, even when I had my car. I've been feeling discouraged to continue commuting by bike recently since my current job is 14 miles out and soon 21 miles for my next job. I have to remember that the district I live in is actually bike accessible and I can reach most shopping and exploring within a 15 minute ride. Thank you for the video! I am going to try to ride more enjoyably instead of forcing myself to make long, grueling rides. I'm always inspired whenever I tune into you, Zach!

I don't own a car anymore and haven't for the last 10 years. I ride every day and honestly have no idea (nor care) how far I ride each week. I can do 100 miles in a day and I've done a few 400 mile multi day rides but the daily rides are what keeps my head clear.

Congratulations on your engagement! Speaking of cycling, I used to be a weekend warrior (albeit I only went about 5-10 kms every ride 😂) and one day I felt like I needed more. And ever since I decided to use my bike more for my commute to the bicycle shop I work at, I've been feeling better! It's way shorter at 7 kms round trip but IDGAF!

I grok this. My first fixed gear is a Wabi (built from parts and an early frame found online). Just recently put it all together. I know Richard S. from 1979 or so, and I believe he founded Wabi after his years of owning local shops in NC and then working with his family at Performance. These Wabi frames are sweet.

There are some physiological adaptations that require long rides. Not everything can be compensated for by frequency, so even if the total weekly volume is the same, the adaptations between the weekend warrior and the commuter will be slightly different. Does it matter, though? Probably not, unless you are racing (or doing ultra-endurance events). And even then, the weekend warrior is much more likely to skip a ride because life get's in the way, which will then leave him with longer pauses than necessary or desirable - and leving him in danger of giving up on riding entirely. The daily commuter is much more likely to be consistent in his exercise. And the daily commuter, too, can go on a long(ish) weekend ride, if he so wants... meaning he will likely get more total volume in average. And while this will not be the most efficient form of a training plan, and the daily commuter mght even lack behind a hypothetical someone following a more structures approach with the same total volume, he will still be far better off than anybody that only goes for the "worthwile" rides and then misses a couple of them. To quote a wise man: ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike.

I also think riding every day is very fulfilling. I am riding my xc bike every day and built up my own fixed gear which i now want to ride more often. It feels really good to ride except for one thing: when i ride with no hands the bike tilts to the left like it wants to make a turn. Does anyone have an idea where that come from? I think my wheel is pretty straight in the dropouts.

10 minute rides are for either kids or old people who can't make a mile to store or post office. Daily rides are important but they take more like 30-60 minutes in case of dedicates rides, but I just use bicycle as a transportation instead of bus or taxi. Weekend rides are more a way to separate from family, daily duties and be alone, or with riding buddies if you prefer riding in a group.
