Today we're talking about sodium bicarbonate, or better known as baking soda, commonly used for baking cakes, but when mixed with water and downed like a shot, it can have real benefits on our athletic performance! We've teamed up with AMP Human, who are experts in this field and have even managed to put this substance into an effective lotion.

I don't understand what good it would do to drink sodium bicarbonate. Anyone who has made a model volcano knows what happens when you mix it with an acid, and our stomachs have acid in them. Mix sodium bicarbonate with hydrochloric acid and you'll get salt water and large amounts of CO2: NaHCO3 + HCl → NaCl + H2O + CO2(g) If there's any benefit to it I assume it's purely placebo.

Totally agree that taken orally can present some challenges. The body of literature is 40 years deep showing between 2-8% improvement in performance. The challenge has always been the GI distress that comes with it.

I soda load, it works for me. Even if I don’t have a performance gain, I feel it reduces after race muscle fatigue. I use it up to 5 miles races. I know it’s not supposed to work for that long an effort, but I notice the post race benefit. It for 10km or more though. With my weight I get my dose in 3 antacid tablets, one 3 hrs before, one 2 hrs before, one 1 hour before the race.

have you tried adding creatine to your drink bottle before a high intensity workout? I have found through experimentation over the past 2 months that adding a small scoop to my water bottle allows me to sustain a longer effort for any zone 4 or 5 workouts. I personally don't know if this is just a placebo effect or not but it still allows me to push a little harder for longer.

2:30 re the discussion about "buffering", and the production of sodium bicarb in the kidneys. A question is asked regarding types of food which can help with this natural process (of keeping the blood supply slightly alkaline) and an example of dark green leafy veg is used as an example. A little research shows that pretty much all fruit, veg, nuts, grains and seeds become alkaline when digested (even citrus fruits like oranges and lemons which have citric acid actually become alkaline when digested) whilst foods such as meat, cheese, milk, eggs, coffee, soft drinks etc actually become acidic when digested. This could well be the reason why people who eat a plant based diet or who are vegan (there is a difference) are able to last longer and recover faster. Take Scott Jurek as an example with just under 267km in 24 hours and multiple Spartathlon wins (246km or a little under 6 marathons).
@MrJhockley
@MrJhockley 3 жыл бұрын
I wonder why the diet isn't more popular. There seems to be a real lack of successful athletes is main stream sports on plant based diets. There must be more to this than just acid and alkali. The scientific consensus on alkali diets is that they are detrimental to health as the body needs to fight to balance out the ph level. I know the veg based minerals are less biodiverse so maybe the gains are cancelled out by the loses. Diets, what a complex thing.
@bikeanddogtripsvirtualcycling
@bikeanddogtripsvirtualcycling 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJhockley going from experience, when i first became vegan quite a few years ago I had so many people ridicule me, try to sneak meat and dairy in to my food, ask me about protein, call me weak etc but with so much publicity and proof regarding the health benefits of a plant based diet in the media nowadays the comments and assumptions towards me have mostly changed and stopped. I used to relish being able to out run and out cycle my work colleagues in their 20s even last year (i'm late 40s) and have a very fast recovery time (can race a marathon and be recovered enough to run another the following day). it is however possible to adhere to a plant based diet but still be nutritionally deficient which is why some people just give up trying. Just for a little extra insight I search for a small group of world class vegan athletes that people will probably know .... james wilks , mma fighter Pro cyclist Dotsie Bausch lewis hamilton, formula 1 scott jurek, ultrarunner Fiona Oakes, world record marathon runner rich roll, Ironman athlete Olympic weightlifter Kendrick Farris Morgan Mitchell, olympic sprinter DeAndre Jordan, NBA & olympics Carl Lewis, olympic sprinter nate diaz , mma mike tyson, arnie is almost vegan but still eats eggs can't recall the tennis player but i think she and her sister are twins Brendan Brazier, ironman and ultrarunner
@MrJhockley
@MrJhockley 3 жыл бұрын
@@bikeanddogtripsvirtualcycling I'm sorry you went through that ridicule. Diets are miss-understood by so many and often become to target of ridicule. I know there is a lot of misinformation on the internet regarding meat and anti-meat. The scientific consensus is still leans away from the restrictive nature of plant based diets but that will change as substitutes and supplements get better. I know most successful vegan athletes built a career on omnivorous diets but then changed after their peak such as Mike Tyson and Carl lewis. Some during their peak such as Lewis Hamilton and some just tried it for a while such as Serena Williams. We need to dissect these facts before jumping to simple conclusions. Over consumption of meat is a real accepted problem amongst health officials. I see positive steps being made towards animal welfare and i truly believe that the world will one day become cruelty free.

Thank you, nice presentation, will give baking soda a try today on my 10K time trial. I have read that Sodium bicarbonate should not be taken sparingly and too often as it reduces the acidity in our stomach creating alkalinity. We need acidity for the digestion process and the destruction of pathogens. it can potentially cause gastric reflux since our gastric valves open up. A good alternative is to take Beta-Alanine - it has the same effect and is fast-acting.

@peterb9481

Perhaps: Have not too high a dose on an empty stomach before breakfast. Have a slightly lower dose if to be done daily. If having a higher dose then have more water with it, or another glass of only water immediately after; allow a longer time to drink it. Wait for at least ten minutes before eating. Allow time for the gas it produces to come out. Allow for the additional time to go to the toilet - as it does clean out your bowels. Do not have with a meal or if you have food in your stomach; as the alkali neutralises stomach acid and affects digestion. It can also make you more likely to be sick - if taken with a meal or just after - as the higher stomach pH means less pathogens are killed.

Cant you compare against S Caps to see if the reaction to sodium bicarbonate is the sodium or not? I have used S Caps to help with cramp in ultras and ironman events and it helped me keep going where other races i would have cramped. If that is similar to the buffering then i will stick with them, they come in capsules so easy to take during racing.

Ok, sorry guys i really enjoyed your channel but that's BS. Baking soda is only beneficial at really short distances (max 5k) where one is really in the anaerobic zone. But you'll earn more negative effects by drinking it on a regular basis. It's bad for the teeth because it's abrasive to dental enamel, it leads you to take in way too much sodium which can lead to high blood pressure or other physiological problems (you won't eat a tablespoon of salt either i think) and it may cause digestive issues as well...well just to name a few... It's more of a placebo for anything longer than 5k at full effort. It cannot have any effects if you do train or compete at an aerobic area and only for a short period in anaerobic zones, though anaerobic glycolysis is a veeery ineffective way of producing energy.... And also there's no lactic acid produced in any way... Please at least google for scientific sources before publishing.... Nobody has to be a physiologist or chemist to understand what's written there... Edit: and Lance Armstrong is not the best source for legal enhancement products...

@@minem23 Certainly I'd agree that constant, multiple times a day ingestion would probably cause issues. I don't think taking it once a day without a large meal would cause much issue. The body could easily re-acidify the stomach the 2+ hours later after exercise when a meal is eaten. Logically sound doesn't always work out with the body either. There's a reason in vitro and in vivo are both conducted. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I'd need to see studies saying once daily boluses causes major issues
