wow. you just BLEW UP congrats. I think this video fails to consider "natural" vs. "familiar" Postures that we hold unconsicously are comfortable because they are familiar and may not, necessarily, be "healthy" in terms of circulation and airflow etc. causing undue tension. Someone who has trained muscles for great posture, a ballerina for example, may find sitting up straight requires less effort and easier to sustain than someone who works hunched over all day because of training and familiarity.

I can confirm this. I wore a back brace for 8 years (literally all through my teen years) to retrain my muscles and spine to be straight. It was that or spinal surgery. Look up people with kyphosis. It's great being told to "straighten up" by someone who barely knows you when you literally can't straighten up. Doctors who treat kyphosis refrain from that statement.

(YES! late to this party but) I am 69 years old & attribute my back & neck pain to doing my phisical jobs all my life the WRONG ways & not posture at all. I was raised in a time & place that taught me the bullshit of "you are a man, just do it!" when those jobs actually needed a machine to do it safely. As a exaggerated example (but 1 we tried actually) if a tractor was stuck in the mud "let's all just push & pull it out!". Very stupid I now know, but that was our mindset at that time.

It might be worthwhile to point out that good posture may be a sign of good muscle health, rather than a goal in itself. I've definitely seen improvement in my posture due to several years of regular exercise.
@emery6601
@emery6601 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. When the muscles are strong and in balance (something achieved through activity that strengthens muscles and improves flexibility in tandem) then "good" posture is the end result. When some muscles are weak or out of balance-- for example, I work with my hands/arms in front of me all day, so my upper back muscles like my rhomboids get weak and stretched out and my anterior chest and shoulder muscles get tight and contracted-- then "bad" posture is the result, because our muscles are pulling our bodies into those positions. That why those exercises to fix posture work. And it's why just *trying* to have "better" posture and constantly beating yourself up about it absolutely does not work at all, lol. Unless I specifically strengthen my rhomboids and stretch/loosen my pecs, my shoulders are always gonna roll forward, because that's what those muscles will make my shoulders do, and no amount of consciously correcting it is going to make that not true.

@nolabcoatrequired if we are thinking in terms of office jobs and schools where you are forced to be in this limited range of motion. It’s makes sense that if you don’t have the muscle endurance and strength to support your body(which can actually take considerable amount to hold static positions) and you are not allowed to move and readjust once a position becomes uncomfortable, then yeah pain is inevitable. It would be interesting to know if there are any studies talking about how changing the environment affect the pain

The bigger issue is often the health of our muscles. When we repeatedly engage is certain activities over time, the muscles which we favor in those activities strengthen, while those that are not favored weaken. This includes sitting in a slouched position. The slouched position is often optimal for the time we are sitting, which is why we tend to sit that way. But by repeatedly sitting in that position for long hours, it causes the body to neglect the muscles in our core, while strengthen the opposing muscles. If we slouch to one side, one side will be stronger than the other side. If I were to use a sports analogy, it would be like a football team only practicing one play, running their fullback straight down the middle. It may be a very good and very successful play, but the team will struggle to throw the ball downfield or engage in any other plays needed to win the game..

@GeekOfAllness
@GeekOfAllness Жыл бұрын
The reverse of that is only strengthening unnecessary muscles. If your team only practices 2-point conversions, they'll be very good at them, but they'll lose game after game because they don't know how to run or pass the ball. If you have to pick one, you'd rather the team who only runs down the middle, since you have to score a touchdown for the 2-point conversion to even be relevant. In real life, you don't have to pick one, but you should still focus on the more important aspects. You can only spend so much time training, so you need to optimize that time by spending most of it on the things that are most likely to score, and less of it on things you only see occasionally. I find that slouching is uncomfortable precisely because of how much it uses core muscles. Sitting straighter allows me to be lazier, and causes less discomfort after long periods of time. Of course, any position gets uncomfortable eventually, but any form of slouched position gets bad faster because my core muscles tire out then my spine starts taking the brunt of the forces. I also find that the vast majority of office chairs have terrible ergonomics. They're all designed so you either have to sit up straight with zero support from the chair back, or slouch way back so the chair is supporting some weight, but at radical angles that are quite painful. Finding a chair that has a more vertical back so I can both sit up straight and lean on the chair to reduce fatigue is almost impossible. I've taken to bolting adjustable car seats to my computer rigs so I can get reasonable seating positions. Though I do occasionally look for my seat belt when sitting down to watch Netflix.

One of the very first things my physical therapist taught me was that there is no such thing as "good posture". It all depends on how long you maintain a single position without moving which is the problem. Moving spreads synovial fluid to lubricate the body and relieve the pressure/pain. It can be confusing to hear people say things that go against common beliefs that are habitually ingrained in our society, but it's reassuring to find multiple sources corroborate eachother.

Get a new physical therapist. "Good posture" is where your bones settle at rest if proper tension is being maintained by all the muscles around it. *Most* people do not exercise or stretch enough so their posture needs to be kept in check because it's the only thing they are telling their muscles to do.

@@jessehunter362 I never suggested otherwise? My contention was that "there is no such thing as good posture" is an outright lie. Poor posture is a major contributing factor to ruptured and slipped vertebral discs so when I hear someone saying that there is no such thing as good posture, all I hear is someone creating future misery for anyone who would listen to such an idiotic thing.

I've done zazen (formal meditation practice) for over 40 years. In this practice, we sit upright on a cushion, with our legs crossed and hips above our knees. This makes the spine straight, with the weight of the upper body balanced on the hips. With practice, one can maintain this posture for 30 - 40 minutes consistently. Sometimes we do "retreats," in which we practice zazen in 30-35 minute sessions interspersed with 10 minute walking periods. These retreats can last from 6 hours to 3 months. On the longer retreats (2 or more days), I develop an excruciating knot in my back, just beside and below my left shoulder blade. I don't know anybody else with this problem, and no-one has been able to explain to me how it happens or how to stop it, except "don't do those long retreats." I have subscribed and liked your video. Sounds to me like you have a rib that isn't fully in place. When you put your body under this unusual level of stress, your muscles pull that rib further out of place instead of holding the rib as close to in place as your muscles can. The main problem, as far as your body is concerned, is that you are taking something that your body is used to doing for short periods of time (30-40 minutes) and suddenly asking your body to do this activity for 6 hours a day, daily for as long as 3 months at a time. If you were to go from walking the amount you normally do in a day (total) to walking 12 times as much, even for just one day, you would be in a lot of pain. Do that for 3 months solid and you are going to magnify any injuries you get early on, as well as stressing your body and muscles in such a way that any existing imperfections with your body will show up as pain that will continue to be amplified as sore muscles become tense and pull on tendons and ligaments that aren't used to supporting against those levels of muscle tensions in those directions. (It's important to know that tendons and ligaments strengthen, or heal, 6 times slower than muscles.)

I used to get that pain, too. Years ago I was going through school to become a massage therapist. I was the only student who would get that pain. Only, for me it was on the right side. I learned 2 things about that pain while I was in school. 1: Middle and anterior scalenes (muscles in the front/side of the neck) can cause a referal point that can cause that back pain. Release middle and anterior scalenes and you release that back pain. 2: No matter how well I understand the reason and take care of my scalenes, my body does not like being in that position. So I don't make my body do that anymore.

In my old choir "good posture" wasn't really about being healthy or anything; it was about staying relaxed and focused on singing while still being uniform and looking professional. This was notably *not* standing up completely straight, as that would be tiring. This was very important in that we'd need to stand for hours at a time either in practice or in really long concerts.

I find it curious with the neck & back pain for women, they didn't include the fact women have a severe counterweight on their front, and the size of that is the cause of a great deal of suffering. No, bras don't help. What does help? Corsets since they distribute the weight to the rest of the torso more effectively. But our fashions today don't support this undergarment type, hence the 'vilifying' of it. I come from a family with big chests, and most of them when they reach age 40+, have breast reduction to help remove the neck and back pain. Size B and less have less spinal issues than larger sizes.

I eventually linked it to how I lean on my elbow while working. Once I realized that and started focusing on my seated posture (position, if you want) the neck pains have gone away. I believe there is an "optimal" way to sit and stand to minimize stress on muscles and joints. I'd like to see a deeper dive into this. What about professional dancers and yogis and gymnasts and coaches and stuff? Surely sports medicine and studies into work-related injuries have data on this?

Well, I have scoliosis and underwent a physical rehab. The dangers of a slouched posture are to being at risk of developing a hunchback. Met quite a few people with one there. So the main goal of all the muscle exercises there literally was to develop a straighter "everyday posture". When I came home after 5weeks I was ~2cm "bigger" and felt better. So there is validity in that. - But as you said, it's all about changing postures. Stretch your spine a bit here and there and then continue slumping. 😄

@@mycinnamongirl Where have you been? My daughter has scoliosis. It is a real thing and blatantly obvious in an X-Ray. I watched as it got worse in the X-Rays. Many cases of scoliosis are minor and the person may go through life without even knowing it. But in some cases, it ruins your life. It severely messed up my daughter's life even though we used a brace for several years and then had to get her surgery. I think "they" don't test for it anymore for the same reason schools don't do many physiologically related things anymore, schools lack the funding anymore to do that. It is a cost-benefit analysis based on money rather than concern for kids. If scoliosis only occurs in 3% of girls, and only a small minority of those actually develop bad scoliosis, then the schools are spending scarce resources on physicals for girls, only to have minor results IN THE STATISTICAL WORLD. In the real world, tell that to the ones where it was not caught soon enough. Scoliosis needs to be monitored so that if it gets beyond a certain point, medical intervention (usually through a brace) becomes very important. If it goes beyond a certain point, surgery is required (lots of titanium rods and such). The monitoring of significant scoliosis in adolescence should happen every 3 months. Kaiser Permanente did it every 6 months (cost-benefit calculation). My daughter crossed the point at 3 months and by the time they got to 6 months, her scoliosis was so bad that they figured a brace had little chance of working anymore. We tried it anyway, to no avail.

Having been a musician most of my life, I learned to sit up straight to main proper airflow and to be able to expand my diaphragm in order to breathe properly. Since I've been doing it since the 4th grade, I'm used to it, so slouching just feels weird.

Thanks for the interesting videos. I found you on KZfaq yesterday and subscribed. I don't usually subscribe right away, but I like your sensible information, and you deliver it well. As for this video, animals will get up and move around for short periods before settling down again, so it it's logical that we need to do the same thing, at least while we are awake. I think it helps the circulation, the muscles, and the joints. I have injured a lot of my joints over more than 6 decades on Earth. I am very stiff and sore when I first get up and start to move. After the first few steps I feel a little better, and can move better. Posture ties into all of this. Staying in one position for a long time is bad for all parts of the body, including the spine. Moving at least a little bit before settling down again, or even just changing your position a little helps your spine along with the rest of your body because again, it helps with circulation, lubrication of the joints, and it loosens up stiff muscles. Keep on posting these interesting videos.

I try and walk with "correct" posture (head up shoulders back), but I slouch when I sit - both feel comfortable / natural to me. It is interesting though that you rarely see little kids slouch when they sit down in a position without back support. I noticed it in my kids, when they'd sit cross legged on the floor or on the edge of a bench - razor straight back posture, lol.

Knew I was going to enjoy this video, as someone who has been scolded so much in the past by various people (including my ex husband / emphasis on ex) for my hunchback posture. Honestly what has helped my shoulder/neck pain is incorporating one new stretch in my regular stretching routine, where I put my hands up about shoulder height, and then pull my shoulder blades back, neck forward and straight. After doing this I notice I’m able to pop my neck/spine easier and trigger points start to loosen up. This one little stretch did more for me than any “posture corrections” did and also doesn’t make me feel like I’m some kind of failure for not standing like I’m a damn soldier all the time

This information parrots what my physiotherapist says as well as my own experiences. Sitting in *any* position for too long is going to be bad for you. Muscles get stiff and that can lead to pain, reduced mobility, and stress on your joints. Learning to stretch properly and exercising *all* of your muscles is important for your well-being. In my case I had great posture and moved around a lot in ways I thought should help, but still ended up with back and neck problems. I have a lot of hypermobile joints, so stretches that work for other people don't work for me. The treatment for my problems was to relieve tension in the affected muscles and to learn new stretches and exercises to prevent them from tightening up again. None of that has to do with posture, specifically. If your range of motion is also reduced below the normal range it might even be impossible to maintain good posture, so I can definitely see how "sit up straight" can be really bad advice.
@momchilandonov
@momchilandonov 11 ай бұрын
But the video title is very misleading! It's better to sit straight up than get hunched. Like one could hardly get hunched if he stays straight all the time!
@livipup
@livipup 11 ай бұрын
@@momchilandonov No, the video title is not misleading. Maybe the thumbnail is. The title says nothing about becoming hunched.
@momchilandonov
@momchilandonov 11 ай бұрын
it's circumstantial then, because if I was sitting up straight I wouldn't be hunched now... Sure it gives back and neck pain, but at least the posture long term would be better. Neck and back pain are due to the evolution basics - we didn't evolve to sit on a chair 8 hours a day, so it's common sense for it to be causing issues regardless of posture. @@livipup

Now "Johnny", I was a teacher for decades and I had many, many, bright students like you, who knew how to take a contrarian position on almost every point I made to the class. They always worked on the basis of gaining my attention so I would focus on them. And so steering me away from what I was trying to achieve. I came to Utube today to watch videos about cats but once you said "specificity," I knew I was dealing with next level trickery. I advise you to take up the law, you'll go far !

I think weight distribution also plays a role in where your center of balance will be and therefore how "straight" you should sit to balance yourself. If you have a very flat chest it might cause you less neck pain because of the lack of weight throwing you off.

I agree. As a massage therapist, I see younger and younger people with harmful structural changes occurring in various parts of there back based on the positions they are in “ most of the time”. It is even happening pre puberty! They are looking 100 at 10 yrs old. Changing postures often and putting your body through physical challenges, like in the old days will slow the harmful changes to the spine, pelvis, rib cages, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, organs, eyes & brain.

For my job, I sit 8-10 hours a day, I can't sit in one position for too long otherwise I begin to hurt. Great video and info. The only thing I would have done differently is to put in a disclaimer about the video discussing the health benefits of posture and not about the Social/Business benefits of upright posture. There's more to it than just feeling chill if you're trying to land that dream job.
