Stranger Things has been by far the biggest thing Netflix has ever produced. From the moment Season 1 premiered, it took the world by storm. But now that we're 4 seasons deep, and expecting a 5th, theres one big problem Stranger Things needs to fix. The cast has grown way too big. If Stranger Things wants to come in for a clean ending, it's about time to start cutting down on main characters.

agreed, the stakes can only be raised so high. it's like the writers want to have their cake and eat it too: have incredibly likeable characters that we love to watch, AND put them in extremely high stakes scenarios and put them through incredible danger. either one is good, but I don't think you can do both to an extent. either be willing to kill off a liked character, or don't put those liked characters in such intense life threatening situations.

The problem is, the useless characters are still important to the plot. Jonathan is useless but he has to end up with Nancy. The 4 original boys don't really work anymore because they're 18 year olds trying to pretend to be 14. Dustin is short still can kinda pass but the others could be on the NBA now. But can we really kill Lucas before the Max thing is resolved? Will needs to be part of the final battle. Mike has to end up with Eleven.

@@nerdrage9739 Eh I disagree. If we have to sit through these characters being pointless for multiple seasons at this point, some of whom have been pointless for three seasons now (Mike), it's better to just kill them off or remove them from the show. I really like Mike in season 1, but I've grown to dislike his character now because of the way they handled him and him ending up with Eleven even if they manage to finally nail their romance isn't going to make up for the three seasons where he was completely forgettable/dislikable. Also, most of what you described isn't these characters being important to the plot, that's them being important to other characters, i.e., Mike is important to El, Jonathan is important to Nancy, and Lucas is important to Max. That's an even greater reason to kill/remove some of these characters because the only contribution they really have to the plot at this point is affecting other characters who are actually important, something which their death/removal would accomplish in spades.

I was shocked when Steve didn't die at the end of season 4. I thought his rekindled chemistry with Nancy was so he could heroically save himself and have a bittersweet but fitting ending, as the babysitter taking care of the kids to the very end. It would have been a totally satisfying ending to end his character arc. Instead, he was somewhat helpful in the finale, and ends the series smiling at Robin flirting with her crush. If they'd had the guts to kill him Steve would have been remembered as a classic, beloved character who died a hero, and his death would have MASSIVELY increased both the danger and the need to defeat Vecna going into season 5.

I think Steve dying in S4 would be.... bad but I can totally see them killing him off in the last season. Steve is a fan favorite character so him dying in S4 would be sort of underwhelming imho. But him dying in S5 makes sense, because this is the last season anyway.
@Doomzdeh
@Doomzdeh Жыл бұрын
I could see that…Steve dying would remove a lot of the support that the Kids have in their constant battles against the Upside Down. It would sort of like taking off the training wheels in preparation for Season 5, and it could’ve been a great point of serious development for Dustin. They could’ve kept Eddie instead, and had Eddie kinda step into a larger role to support Dustin. Or they could’ve kept Eddie on his death path, and have Dustin lose them both. Of course, in my opinion, Steve is one of the few likable and consequential characters left in the show, so I don’t know how his death would affect viewership. If anything, Max and Mike should’ve died this season. It would’ve amped up the cost, given Nancy more of a reason to be there, made things much more personal for El, made Vecna seem like a bigger threat, and not ruined the buildup to Max’s death. And it definitely could’ve brought Will back into the fold of the main plot.

@@Doomzdeh lovely thoughtful reply, I completely agree about it being like removing the training wheels, and how Eddie works as a perfect replacement (which is what i THOUGHT they were gonna do - they had no idea Joseph Quinn was gonna make the character come so alive) but it would have been super duper bold to kill of mike, El's love, or Max, El's only girl-friend, I felt like Steve was the perfect level of close but not too close to the inner circle, and seeing Dustin have an ultimate revenge arc would have been phenomenal. I had exactly the same feeling about it. It was cheap and trashy, like something you'd see on reality TV. "And the next person voted off the island is..." *Cuts to commercials* That's not how you tell a story, and that's not good television. It felt like going to a restaurant and ordering food, waiting 30 minutes, then having the owner of the restaurant come out and say "Actually you've got to leave." We invested our time and lives into watching that, and this sounds dramatic, but that decision was insulting. "Eh, fuck em. The fact that we aren't even telling a story, but are instead just utilizing emotionally manipulative tactics like what you might expect from the video game industy (releasing unfinished games because dumb idiots still buy them, so why would they spend more time and money finishing them?), is ok, because these people are gonna tune in again to see what happened. I think I only made it half way through that next season before I never watched the show again.

As much as it would be difficult to watch, I do think the climactic end game for Eleven should be her sacrificing herself to save the others, defeat Vecna and close the Upside Down forever. That would be powerful. Perhaps Jonathan dying early in season 5, also, would raise the stakes.
@foxymoon7860

Realistically speaking El or Will should die. El cannot defeat Vecna by herself as proven in S4. Even if they defeat Vecna they are not going to be able to close the gates, fix the Hawkins, defeat the UD, solve the spores and the earthquake problem, deal with an army of monsters and end the Apocalypse etc without a major sacrifice. If the writers weren't cowards they would kill Will or El. El is the one who has superpowers so her dying to stop Vecna and the UD makes sense, especially because she's the one who sent Vecna to the UD in the first place and created her own villain. Will has always been used as a victim in the story but he's the one who got captured by Vecna and kept alive for some reason and then later on possessed by the MF. Will is connected to Vecna and the UD so him dying also makes sense. El and Will dying is sad and tragic but if the story is going for there then it would make sense.

I think what bothers me so much is that this season REEEAAALLY teased the idea that Nancy or Steve was going to die, that one of them would not make it back from the Upside Down. After multiple seasons of me never questioning their survival, I really thought they were going to do it this time. And for all of that hinting to amount to nothing, I'm just fed up and all of my emotional investment feels used up. Even worse, they undermined the emotional impact of actually letting Max survive by having her wind up in the hospital/in a coma/maybe dead anyway. If they were going to kill her, they should have done it during that famous scene. If not, they should have left her alone and let her survival lull the audience into a sense of comfort before killing off a different main cast member. Honestly, the laid the foundation for a major payoff with Barb's death by having that finally catch up with Nancy. If they killed Nancy off because she was consumed by the guilt of Barb, a character that was pretty much an afterthought at this point, it would have pulled everything full-circle and given a clear contrast of outcomes between her and Max. It's such a missed opportunity, especially because they literally showed all of the pieces leading up to it and then... nothing. The Brothers openly stating that they don't know how to handle a post-death Stranger Things is an amazing admission of ineptitude. They talk about it as if it's impossible, as if all these impactful stories we know and love don't exist, instead of realizing the actual truth: they're either not good enough to pull it off or they're too scared to try and find out.

Feels like one of Eleven or Will is toast in season 5, one of them is gonna sacrifice themselves since they’re the most connected to the upside down. I think they felt they couldn’t kill Hopper in season 3 because he had no closure with Eleven, and they couldn’t kill Max because her story represented depression and they didn’t want to send the wrong message of by “completely” killing her (thus rendering her fight meaningless). Or I’m reading too far into it and everyone really just likes Sadie and David too much to kick them out of the story
@LISE_NR
@LISE_NR Жыл бұрын
i honestly think the most likely character death for season 5 is mike. my money is on him for sure. there have been several points of foreshadowing to suggest this, and his character has been reduced from a major lead to a supporting role who has nothing but uncompelling romantic drama to work with. it seems like they don’t know how to justify his place in the narrative anymore and killing him off in a purposeful way could remedy that. he’s the initial protagonist of the series, yet up to this point has faced the least direct supernatural danger of the main cast. he is of huge personal importance to vecna’s main contacts/antagonists (eleven, will, and nancy). and he has a long track record of catching onto + thwarting vecna’s plans in earlier seasons. it makes total sense for vecna to target mike; it would motivate the protagonists (presumably will and el) to absolutely obliterate him, and would close out the narrative neatly. next most likely would be eleven, and i seriously doubt they’d kill off will. killing either of them would be unsatisfying and thematically questionable seeing how they’re the most relentlessly traumatized characters on the show. i could see them making it work for eleven to die. but it would be the worst to kill will since he’s been kicked down for the entire run of the show, and has never had a source of empowerment in his arc like eleven consistently has. he’s always been self-sacrificing and ending the final season like that would mean his character arc wasn’t even an arc, just a flat line of suffering ending in death. that’s just bad writing.

@@LISE_NR mike is an interesting one for sure, I think it’s possible but they’re gonna have to find a way to rationalize however they decide to complete the Will-Mike-Eleven “love triangle”, and since it’s set in the 80s I can see them deciding to show Will taking the choice to ensure they can be happy since he knows Mike wouldn’t leave Eleven for him. Eleven I was thinking more because it would bookend the supernatural side of the story and then the rest of Hawkins “moves on” with the secrets of what really happened hidden from the rest of the world. Idk if either of those are the best way to end the series but I could see them going either of those ways

At this point it almost feels like it's going to be too late. What makes deaths like Ned, Robb, and Catherine Stark so meaningful is that the story must continue without them. That you have to see the growth and change of the characters over several seasons. But more than just the change to the characters (like you mentioned with fridging) it changes the actual story. If people die at the end of season 5, it won't really change the overarching story. It will change the ending, which is important, but the damage of people not feeling expendable has already been done. I love Hopper and Eddie and feel like Max is the strongest character in the series over the past 2 seasons. I like being able to watch those characters and actors, but without any death it really feels like the past 2 seasons (and even the 2nd as well) have just been rehashing the same story of a monster that is attacking Hawkins that is then saved by a magician.

I feel like killing Max would have really raised the stakes for S5 as well. It could have impacted the other characters in really interesting ways, giving them fresh room to grow. I could imagine Lucas going off the rails a bit, make rash decision that put himself in danger but ultimately growing from it to be a more independent, responsible adult. El would regress a little, become colder and more violent (which could give us some great fight scenes where she lays waste to some monsters). Mike would then have to bring her back to herself before she loses the humanity we’ve watch her build up. Ultimately culminating in her being the utmost resolute in her battle vs Vecna/Mindflayer.

Hermione lost her parents (they didn’t die but she became a stranger to them). Ron lost his brother, one half of a pair of twins. Major characters were lost as major events happened like the battle. The stakes were high and the world was changed. Trying to preserve all characters limits the impact of what are meant to be major, world-shifting events because it’s just not realistic.

Prue Halliwell's death actually being real as the opening of Charmed's 4th season shocked me the most. I was a tween/teen when Charmed was first airing, and it was the first time an actual main character (in a show I loved) died. Not only that, but the actress and producers had major beefs, so she never returned (unlike in other shows where characters can return for flashbacks/beyond the grave -- both of which could easily have fit in the Charmed universe and were used quite often with other characters). Finally, because she was the Head Sister Witch, her death completely changed the trajectory of the show. I liked both Prue and Paige, and the show as it was before and after the character's death (for vastly different reasons), but the effects of the death were undeniable.

But those stories can never hit the same levels of dramatic storytelling as media that allows characters to die, and they aren't really meant to. If you want the audience to take your threats seriously, though, you need to give them a reason.

Not sure how many other people get this sense, but I feel like they’re setting Eleven up to die. Perhaps Will as well? There’s this dark cloud kind of hanging over them. Don’t think they’d kill both. Will be very curious to see what they do in Season 5

i think eleven is much more likely to die than will, killing will off in some self-sacrificial way would make his arc...not even an arc, just a flat line of suffering ending in death. they’re both the most relentlessly traumatized characters on the show, but eleven has had long standing sources of empowerment and self discovery throughout her storyline while will has had absolutely no wins to counter his constant victimization and sidelining. eleven dying could definitely work, but it’s hard for me to imagine a way for will to die that wouldn’t be awful character writing, in poor taste, or just tragedy for the sake of it. in my opinion mike is 100% the most likely and sensible character death to drive home the final season. it’s been foreshadowed a bit and would remedy his recent lack of narrative purpose, would be a huge motivating factor for the supernatural protagonists (eleven and will, and to a lesser extent nancy’s relationship with mike is also connected to vecna). it could tie up a lot of loose story threads surrounding these characters and be an incredibly strong emotional beat if done right.

@bluecanine3374
@bluecanine3374 Жыл бұрын
Oh definitely. Aside from just the basic writing standpoint, the genre also made it impactful. In RPGs, well JRPGs mostly, you start with a small party and just keep adding party members without losing any so you can mix and match strategies in party makeup. You have fighters, mages, healers. Aerith was the only clear Healer character and so you really think they'd at least introduce another before killing her, but no she is and was the only obvious White Mage archetype. But it didn't matter because unlike other JRPGs leading up to FF7 you can swap skills (Materia) around easily and make anyone a White Mage so the gameplay made it so you didn't feel crippled once you got far enough into it to have those healing Materia. So once you got used to fighting without her it sort of sinks in that there is no reason to bring her back/resurrect her and the developers really are going to leave you without your White Mage (which usually was essential to any party build in other games)

That moment you know he’s never going to return to the church in the slums to see Aerith again. I don’t know how the rest of the Remake alterations will play out, but if it involves seeing Zack realise he has to die and come to terms with what should never have been it’ll add an emotional layer to it.

I think furthermore to make a death impactful, the character needs to remain "gone" as well. Making the Joker a figment of Batman's imagination in Arkham Knight or making the Purple Man a figment of Jessica Jones' imagination doesn't actually feel like they're gone. If a character dies, but still ends up getting even more screentime, it diminishing the weight of the death and acts more as a crutch for the writers too scared to push forward a better character.

Buffy tVS was an interesting example. It took until late in S2 to kill a character the viewers were fond of (though some recurring, sympathetic characters had died earlier). It was only in S5 that a member of the main cast, and eventually in S6, one of the Scooby Gang properly speaking, died. So it was very sparse compared to GoT, but it did happen, which kept the tension, even though the main characters survived an objectively implausible amount of life-threatening situations.

When characters constantly die, then get revived, or didn't actually die, it gives off this sense of invincibility that eventually gets annoying because you start feeling like none of the actions matter. "Oh, this character is facing ten monsters with a pencil. Well, they're gonna be fine cause the creators don't want them to die." I also feel it makes the rewatch value lessen. Like, if I were to rewatch Squid Game, I'm not gonna care about that character's death because they just come back later and I know it (not saying who in case people reading haven't seen it yet.) However, when I rewatch something where the character does die, like Glenn in the Walking Dead, I get emotional every time, both when it happens and as it gets closer. And while it does hurt, it's at least making me feel emotions instead of feeling empty because nothing mattered. There is one way that this revive trope works I feel, and that's in Doctor Who. While the Doctor does come back through regeneration, they come back as an entirely new person, personality and all. It works even better when you take into consideration every Doctor that regenerates, at least in Modern Doctor Who, dreads the regeneration because they know it means they're gone, with Ten once saying "Even if I change, it still feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead." Because of this, every time a specific Doctor regenerates, it still hurts regardless of the knowledge that the Doctor as a whole continues. Obviously not everything should follow Doctor Who's step, otherwise it'd begin to feel bland, but it at least shows that there are ways to make the reviving trope not feel so empty and pointless like Stranger Things is doing.

There are too many big groups in the show where some characters no longer make individual contributions to the story. Maya Hawke as Robin is the worst example: great character in S3, serves as a ploy to Steve's development and her detective work alongside Dustin complements Steve's dim-witted courage perfectly. In S4 she does nothing (except the one scene in the psych warden's office), because there isn't any room for her to have something to do. This is a problem throughout the show now: Jonathan, Mike, Will, Steve, Erica, and even Dustin don't go through any significant development. There are so many other elements to focus on, these characters kind of just stand around and say their lines. The Duffers need to trim the fat somewhere. IMO, bringing Hopper back removed all the weight to Eleven's grief in early S4. I think they should have kept him dead and it would have been far more impactful, and we could focus on the way Joyce and Murray interplay. The Russia stuff in S4 was fun but to me felt a little infantilizing, and irrelevant. The S4 Joyce + Murray plot could have been literally anything. Max could have died at the end of the season. She had the best story in the season and the tragedy would have been extremely potent. Eddie could have lived (and we could actually get more Eddie), and in his place DBs could have actually killed Steve, like they were teasing all season. That would give Nancy and even Jonathan and Dustin emotional fuel and complexity for the final season. Now imagine the gang trying to beat the final boss (Vecna in S5) to avenge the deaths of Steve and Max. Avenging Eddie just doesn't carry the same weight. It's okay to let the show get heavier. The kids are grown up, and so are the fans. Harry Potter gradually dialed up the seriousness as the kids got older and it worked for the story. Cedric Diggory's death, although a minor character, symbolizes the changing of the tone in that story. The lighter adventures of the first 3 years were over. Voldemort was back, even children could be killed, and things were going to get worse. Stranger Things could benefit from that model.

Steve doesn't go thru any development? He's gone thru more than most. Erica and Robin have been introduced too recently to have development. If there was more time on the meter, Robin's gay plotline could have some development (what happens when this close-minded small town finds out) but I doubt S5 will bother with things like that. I look at this as, which characters are vital to the plot (pretty much just Eleven), which characters are fun (Hopper, Steve, Robin, Dustin, Eddie RIP, Lucas, Max) and which characters annoy me and make me want to ff thru their scenes (Joyce, Nancy, Jonathan, Will, Mike, Erica). As for Murray, I don't care, throw him into the Kill column. Turn this over to me, and I'll chop this cast in half, leaving a core contingent of PSTD'ed survivors who will go after Vecna with furious vengeance. The problem is, the kids are still just 14 even if they look 18 (which is tremendously annoying when they're still written as 14 year olds) and it's a bit savage to kill characters that young.

@@nerdrage9739 Steve goes through a ton of development in 1-3, and IMO stagnates in 4. Problem is with the "Kill Column", if you only kill characters we don't care about, then we don't care about their deaths either.
