The Tekken series stands as one of the best selling fighting game series of all time. Over the course of 25 years, Tekken has cemented itself as a household name and a brand that carries a hefty weight.
Tekken 7 is the latest addition in the series, garnering over 4 million sales and an overwhelming amount of support from the fighting game community.
I’m guilty of liking the game myself, really. Tekken 7 has charm, and I definitely see the appeal. It’s a great fighting game, however, I dare say that it’s not the best Tekken game.
I didn’t make this video to bash Tekken 7 nor run its name in the dirt. I’ve been with the series ever since Tekken 3, and I’ve played every main titled entry and Tag game in the franchise. I even have a video on this channel breaking down why I think Tekken 4 had the most realistic story. Suffice to say, I love Tekken.
Despite my love for Tekken, I have every right to critique the game; not only as a longtime Tekken fan, but as a consumer.

Yes. I was mostly disappointed. But I saw it coming from Tekken 5 onwards. In terms of story, fighting games follow three general routes. World endangered + villain to move the story, tournament to justify the gathering of fighters, and artefact of great power . . .. to justify gathering of fighters. Sometimes these three routes can mix. Tekken has just worn its welcome in justifying characters together. In the old days tournaments and prize money did the job but since Tekken deviated with the whole world war yeahhhh . . . . . . . the characters can't maintain a storied presence. By comparison, if you look at the approach of Street Fighter, the characters seldom change because they can be a bit more symbolic vs iconic. I mean, really if we look at the roster Sagat goes through the most growth out of anyone while Cammy Guile Chun-Li are world police. Mmmmm maybe Cody you can say has gone through a bit of a change personality and development wise. However, you know what? The more story there is, the more change there is. The more change there is, the more work there is. Know what games typically have the best stories? Western developed fighting games. Mortal Kombat for its rich environment and lore and ability to return the dead, Killer Instinct for a seasonal add-on to the story with the inclusion of characters, Skull Girls for big chunks of redefining lore art and music and gameplay all in one package? Looking forward to Them's Fightin' Herds personally over Tekken 8. Feng, Miguel, and a lot of other newbies lack lasting appeal with how rich their movesets are. They lack staying power. Lili and Asuka rivalry? That got old fast. Know who didn't get old? Dragunov. You can change the way he dresses and he's still fine. Sometimes less is more. Lastly, the music in T7 blows. ANY song I can't hum? Fail. Any fighting gamer who values gameplay over the lore and other art has dipped too far into the spectrum of considering what "fun" is. Maybe I'm just gettin' old but I have a better time going backwards in fighting game history to appreciate their evolution than playing this new stuff. The slow motion is pretty ballin'. Akuma's inclusion and Geese trailer were some of the exciting new things incorporated. Using kid Kazuya perform his old 10 hit combo? Remember 10 hit combos? Hah. I'll stop. One day they'll give King back air throws. Just you wait.

Tekken7 really dissapointed me. I was expecting to keep Tekken6's graphics at least to be upgraded a little. From many reasons I hate Tekken7 : - horrible story mode - Mishima Saga short and boring - customize is bad (I mean not enough customize options) - characters outside of Tekken like Akuma, Negan and Noctis - all characters faces are screwed! Almost all girls haves asian shape eyes and all boys haves european shape eyes, all bodies are very similar between them, most of the characters their faces were copied from Tekken Tag2 graphics - paying the online mode - the new toxic fans - some stages are not as I expected : I was hoping for Violet Systems from outside to be in Tekken7 NOT INSIDE. Besides that Lee's face in tekken7 looks horrible, he doesn't look like a chinese anymore. These are my reason why I hate Tekken7 so much. Honestly Tekken6 is still the best tekken game on 1st place for me and for the others from my generation.

Finally someone who feels the same way about this game as I did. And when it comes to the story...I just have this belief that Harada just gave up on it, that's why he just goes all out doing needless and non-sensical retcons, being biased for Heihachi, treating almost everyone as total comic reliefs (because Harada self-proclaims to be a very 'humoristic' person) even those that are supposed to be tragic like Eddy, putting guest characters as part of the main storyline like Akuma from SF which actually ruins the logic of the series. Oh and whenever you try to explain this and other flaws that this game has, the supposed "fans" call you a hater and bitch about it with Harada and Murray blocking you on Twitter even if you were just giving a constructive criticism without insulting anyone. There's a theory that I don't know if it's true. The reason why Tekken 7 feels lackluster when it comes to story, single-player content, the OST and everything...it all has to do with the fact that Harada messed up when he wasted all the budget with TTT2 which explains why he had a very low one upon developping Tekken 7. So in order to make the game successful and gain all the attention, money and support, he needed the easiest way: focus completely on the eSports community, going all out with his way of thinking about the characters and story because in the end it's the eSports community that gives him the full support on the game. And when he reaches the goal he is looking for, he could just reboot the franchise and restore everything and bring Tekken to its former glory with a balanced focus on eSports and non-online players. So either this theory or Harada just gave up on everything and just cares of online. To be honest, with the way he is handling this game, he may as well rename it as "Tekken: eSports" instead of "Tekken 7".

You're definitely not alone by thinking that. If that's true, it's a shame that people like them who present themselves as positive public figures can't take constructive criticism when it would help improve the franchise that we all love passionately. I felt like Harada put a lot of work into TTT2. There's something about that game that I felt did something to Harada, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's that. Likewise, Tekken 6 was packed full of content. Each character had several pre battle and post battle animations, and not to mention the myriad of clothing items in the game. In Tekken 7, all of that was scaled back. That makes me even more curious as to how he produces Tekken 8.

About the narrator. Don't know if you heard this, but YellowMotion actually contacted the voice actor, that did the narration in the main storyline and did the announcer voice. And as it turns out, the devs and the voice director knew, they KNEW, that this tone that the voice actor used for the narration, was simply not acceptable in the slightest. But with this knowledge, they STILL went through this, knowingly. Just for the fact, that they didn't even bother trying, terrifies me. Where will this end? Also, these Character Episodes can go burn in a fire, for all I care. They don't add up to anything, their length is not even justifying for an actual "Arcade ending" and rather more like a cutscene, before the match, and... I just say this: It's senseless character abuse, written off as comedy, for the most part. Does this sound like fun? Watching a badass like Paul being told to piss off with no reason or context given? Or Eddy being completely reduced to a backdancing loser like this?

I had no idea that was the case. If that's true, I could only imagine what other stories those involved could shock us with. I agree completely. The story was an afterthought. I would have written a story that was 10x better for free, and I put that on my whole Tekken collection.

@@djjin5768Heh. It's like, they're thinking "we need to push for gameplay and E-sports to sell higher numbers". I think it's worth mentioning the impact youtube has had on story. Whether we like it or not, what's the point of unlocking content in games when they're so readily available on youtube to watch? It would explain the loss of gallery modes and it inadvertently breeds smaller character usage. It also doesn't help when there's tutorial vids for matchups and people get their fix fighting another character without actually using them. There are always newcomers to a fighting franchise and the devs know they can offer less as time rolls on but the oldies remember and complain. I remember Tekken Ball, I remember Tekken Force. But the needs of the new differ. Screw all of this. I'm going to have Yoshimitsu copy King giant swing in Tekken 4. Tekken 4, the favourite of mine. @@Toomnyusernae But again, all these are just excuses over excuses over excuses to justify their half-assed piece of work, that is their recent money maker. KZfaq itself, is not to blame for how bad the game's content is, nor the quality of the content itself. It's mindless scapegoating, that's like saying, "my CD did not sell well, let me blame piracy for that, instead of looking in the mirror first to ask myself, WHY it did not sell well to begin with". That's just dumb. Dodging the blame and pointing fingers on others is real easy, isn't it? And it doesn't help, how the devs react to criticism in general. No matter how polite and constructive, you still get blocked. So no matter what you do, you're still the bad guy for trying to find solutions and suggest them to the ones behind your favourite game and you end up being called "hater" and "troll" by his rabid supporters, all because, you tried to be critical of the problems within the game. There is no denying it. It's a total clownshow. As much as online is in Tekken 7. Mediocre or downright TERRIBLE netcode, no penalty for anything and you end up risking your own mental health for having to deal with Call of Duty levels of asshole-ery from certain players. @HeyMomonia
@HeyMomonia 3 жыл бұрын
I think soul calibur is in a better shape tbh. Not in terms of how well it did but in terms of how much respect they have for the characters. They went back to their roots and every character has a single story. Sometimes it's short yes but at least you know about the characters and their goals. It does lack single content and has some broken mechanic though. But at least they didn't turn every character into a joke or replaced them with randoms (i know they did it in 5 but i praise them for understanding their mistake and going back to the original characters). I'm not a big fan of the cac story tbh i wish it was like in sc3 where every character had a longer story with different roots but it's still a lot better than what tekken did.

In my opinion Arc System Works and Neatherealm studios have WAY better single player content compared to it's competitors. Heck, I made video over twenty minutes praising Arc's flagship title BlazBlue, and how it's most recent entry has some of the best single player content ever for a fighting game. For example, BlazBlue Central Fiction's story mode takes LITERALLY dozens of hours to complete.

I agree. Blazblue Crosstag got me into the series, and their tutorial mode did wonders for my performance. With MK11, I've never felt so envious of fans before. @@roscodantethefightinggamen7939 I personally am NOT a fan of BlazBlue Cross Tag's game play and single player content. My issue with single player is that I feel it doesn't offer no where near as much single player content as Arc System Works other titles, specifically BlazBlue Central Fiction. Additionally, the story presentation In Cross Tag is vastly inferior to the main line BlazBlue titles currently released as well as the power scaling being inconsistent as well. In order to understand my complaint on game play I first need to talk about BlazBlue Central Fiction, which is one of the most complex 2D fighters out right now, with the game having legacy skill, meaning if you haven't stuck with the series since the original back in 2008 you have a MASSIVE hill to climb in learning frame data for each character's normals, gatlings, and overall mobility options that can be used on offense and neutral. Then there are the game's plentiful system mechanics, such as having four ways to block based on specific scenarios for example, and that's not even going into the Drive mechanic, which is a unique action for each character, which there are over 35 of, which most of the cast plays VASTLY DIFFERENT from each other. Mainline BlazBlue games were HUGE in japan, with it being popular in many Japanese arcades. With many veterans like Dogura (one of the best players in Guilty Gear) and Fenrich (arguably the best BB player, and currently one the best in DBFZ) representing the series for a long time . Sadly, The series just never took off over here in the west. Finally, BB TAG and mainline BlazBlue games are two SEPARATE things all together, with BBTAG having it's own set of rules with the system mechanics, and SIMPLIFYING ALL of the characters, though the latter may change with this new update. It's for these reasons that you can't approach BlazBlue Central Fiction in the same way that you would BBTAG. Just my two cents.

I understand the game is the best in terms of competitivity, i've played this game seriously since tekken 3 when it first came out, but i have to say that tekken 7 lacks many things and has things that a game like this shouldn't have. Starting from content is barebones with costumes and arcade mode with 5 stages and stupid ai even at highest difficulty. Story mode is bad and boring with recycled cutscenes. Game modes from previous games are gone and useless dlcs. In gameplay i have to say that is a lot attacker friendly but i dislike the fact that we have armor and rage art. This is not street fighter infact these mechanics makes the game feel too much of a spinoff crossover game between capcom and namco(infact akuma feels out of place). Rage drives are good and greatly implemented and i think they should've stopped there. Also legacy characters being locked behind a paywall. If someone has always played marduk how is he supposed to compete?

In terms of gameplay I find it's the most engaging of the series. In terms of story I feel the only Tekken 4 that ever touched genuinely interesting writing, directing etc. Starting with Tekken 5 it leaned harder into the melodramatic Anime style storytelling and writing. I genuinely think they tried to make a compelling narrative with Tekken 7. The ingredients are there but the execution os just a messily written and executed bad animation storyline with a few interesting ideas and a nice final death scene for Heihachi. I think they need to combine the Tekken 7 style Story Mode with Tekken 4&5. Have a robust story mode but keep the POV limited to whoever the player picks. I think switching POVs too often is a bit too disorientating for a Fighting Game. As you end up playing all this characters you can't really control for moments at a time. There's a lack of momentum.

Tekken 7 neither saved or killed the franchise. Instead, Tekken has been twisted into something unrecognizable for people who grew up with the series and finds a new audience who are detached from everything that defined Tekken until it was stripped away in 7. DOA6 had the potential to win over a starving audience but it didn't and that's a whole other can of worms. When Tekken 7 came out, I was disappointed but hopeful that we'll see something new in the future while tolerating the season passes, believing that ideas for a follow-up was in the cards. What finally made me hate Tekken 7 and the entire FGC was Kazuya being in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Yes, I'm happy Tekken finally gets some representation and it's not Heihachi but there has been nothing going on with the series since 2017. There was the third or fourth Tekken mobile game but that just came and went. There was no spin-off, no movie, no... anything. It was just Tekken 7 getting DLC fighters and balancing, all while the FGC ate it all up, believing that single player content and trying to resolve plots left unanswered for decades would get in the way of Tekken 7 getting rollback netcode, which is something I still have no idea of what "netcode" even means and "rollback" even does for it. Jin Kazama was created by Harada himself, so he can assume he says that he is the son of Kazuya Mishima and Jun Kazama. It's been nearly 25 years and we still don't know the how or why. The live action movie had its own explanation but given how Harada despises the movie, we can assume whatever happened between Kazuya and Jun was nothing like that. We don't need an R-18 scene but build up and context could at least help. Harada must feel like he wrote himself into a corner but wants to do nothing about it, won't asking for help and would rather hang with female cosplayers at his bar. Makes me wonder Harada is even needed anymore and if there's something within the Tekken team that would do good job in shepherding the franchise going forward. Eventually, Tekken 7 will diminish in sales and the dedicated FGC base will diminish when new fighting games come along.

And the story retcon trying to paint Heihachi as a good guy... -____- , also Asuka stop having any relevance. Haven´t met Jin in person yet, Lars was put in a second place as well... Namco loves creating new characters but forgetting them the next game. And yeah... Jun is still nowhere to be seen.

34yr old fighting game player and tekken player since the 90s playing in the arcade as a child Tekken 7 was good but it does have disappointing elements Yes the game did indeed ''cut corners'' for a few reasons TTT2 commercial failure = in my opinion the fanbase failed this game in how negative there opinions were of this game (im not naming names but a few high profile tekken content creators with loud opinions) For me TTT2 is the best tekken game in the franchise.....in terms of value and polish it is superior to T7 when comparing day one releases Complaining about combos and damage for me is not a valid critique in a tag game......... TTT2 was packed with a ton of content EVERY CHARACTER had a CG rendered ending in a NON canon game !! but in the end the game didnt do commercially well....and the esports side of the FGC was much smaller in 2012 vs 2017 so T7 kinda was at the right place at the right time kinda lighting in a bottle situation For me the story mode was disappointing because they promoted it as ''the end of the Mishima arc'' when in reality it was just rehash filler with wasted opportunities with Kazumi and Jun kazama being absent the retcons were silly and made things worse oh yea and the music in T7 was not the best either.......outside of the heat haze shadow......mostly everything else is forgettable....some of the stages music tracks dont really fit.....

I gotta agree. The individual stories were disappointing and how short each one was with no interludes was especially frustrating. Then the customization was a pain with how limited it is. Tekken 6 had seemingly endless choices of how each character could look and they've done nothing but take a step back since. Finally as far as the music goes only one track stood out to me and that's very disappointing.

After Tekken 6 and Tag Tournament 2, Tekken 7 was a massive disappointment.

You really think Tekken 7 is bad? Let me give you a lot of reasons why is it bad. 1. Tekken 6 has a big budget and only 1 million copies were sold out 2. So they making Tekken Tag Tournament that has a huge budget but still 1 million copies. 3. They almost gone bankrupted because how Tekken 6 and Tekken Tag 2 is a commercial failure. 4. Still they have some money left and makes Tekken 7 but with a small budget. 5. Tekken 7 blew up and Bandai Namco didn't expect it to be big. 6. The budget was so small that the money they used to make Tekken 7 came back after 2 months of its RELEASED. 7. They say that after 2 seasons of Tekken 7, they will make Tekken 8 but the game is still blowing up and they are trying to make the game better with every seasons. 8. Six years after Tekken 7 released, it got until 8 million copies of it sold. So, you know why is tekken 7 is bad? There you have it
