Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Thank you for telling the real story on the WSMs. It's a shame Winchester wouldn't work with the original designer to keep the WSMs. To me, it shows a complete lack of support and commitment to their customers by Winchester. Now what about all those people who bought rifles chambered in WSM cartridges? Obviously, Winchester didn't care about them.

For years I used a 270WSM and love it. Then a removed the barrel and added a 6.5 Bartlein barrel. Put a new stock and a new trigger. Using the same Remington action and the same 270WSM Brass I had. I necked down the Brass to a 6.5mm and now I have a 6.5WSM.

The 270 wsm may not be the most popular round, but I love mine! It is and always will be my #1 hunting rifle here in the central interior of BC. I shoot a 140 grain Nosler Accubond @ 3150 fps and it groups 1/4 moa. Took a mule deer @ 308 meters last fall, through the heart. He took one step and keeled over. Found the perfectly mushroomed bullet under the hide on the far side, 65% weight retention. I've taken several animals with the rifle, nothing ever goes far after being hit. It is compact enough for brushy terrain, but equally at home in open country. It will always be my favorite rifle in my collection! P.S. I'm a little bothered that the cartridge is being phased out because of one person who holds a "patent". C'mon dude, you're ruining it for the rest of us!

If a company profits from someone else’s patented design the designer absolutely deserves to be compensated otherwise it would turn into a free for all. After all if you and I both study for the same math test and I get an A and you get a C I’m not about to give you part of my grade so you can a B and all I get is a B.

Just an FYI, Ron. Winchester still chambers both the Super Grade and the Featherweight in 270WSM as well as other WSM cartridges, like 300WSM, and 325 WSM cartridges. They all have 24 inch barrels and 1/10 Twist. A low point is finding brass for handloading, and IF you can find factory ammo for them you need to save the brass for reloading.

@@stephenkennedy3145They are very close, especially if built on long enough actions. The 6.8 Western has a more modern chamber design with a section of freebore. It resembles the "match chamber" for a WSM. The freebore aligns the bullet entering the rifling and tends to help make it easier to get an accurate load. It also allows the bullet to be loaded farther out of the case, reducing the amount of bullet in the case taking up powder space.

.277 is redundant to the .284, except it doesn't have nearly as large of a bullet selection. The .257 and the 6.5mm have the same situation. I'm glad to see this being addressed.. I built a .257 Ackely Improved once and was disappointed that 120 was as heavy of a bullet as I could push out of a 1:10 twist. Whilst I could care less about .277 cartridges. Berger has recently introduced the 133, and 135 grain .257.. I can't wait until my rifle is done. A one in seven twist.

The legal settlement makes sense. From the beginning of the WSM thing I had thought the 270 WSM would be the most popular (but I was wrong). The 300 duplicated the the 300 WM and the 7mm duplicated the 7mm Rem Mag. The only benefits to those were no belt, and a shorter cartridge length. Whereas the 270 WSM was a GOOD fit between the 270 Win and the 270 Weatherby. It is sad that the 270 WSM is dying. It is a worthy cartridge. If I did not get such good velocities from my 270 Win I would get one.

This does not make a lot of sense, since the 300 WSM is a fairly common cartridge. I think that the main reason that the 270 WSM, 7mm WSM and 7mm RSAUM did not take off was that all three were close in performance without one standing out. You can read what actually happened with the legal part by reading "Jamison v. Olin Corporation-Winchester Division". Jamison had applied for patents for the cartridges and worked with Ruger and Winchester to develop the "JRW" (Jamison, Ruger, Winchester) line. Ruger had agreed to the licensing fee. This was Winchester's response: "Winchester's firm position will be to offer no royalty payments and further request an exclusive license to manufacture and sell any of the JRW cartridges, independent of the caliber under your patent if it issues." Winchester also wrote Jamison and stated: they would ""terminate [the] development of the JRW Cartridges" unless plaintiff signed such an agreement by November 6, 1998. " When Jamison did not agree, Winchester went ahead and introduced the cartridges as Winchester Short Magnums. Winchester even had a 300 JRW introduction and hunt for sports writers in Texas on Feb 22, 1999 because they assumed Jamison would cave. He did not.

Last year I took a buck at 218 yards with my 7mm-08 and it dropped without moving an inch. I love the 7mm-08, mainly because I have spinal cord damage and can't handle too much recoil. In my opinion it's a great cartridge especially here in PA. Good luck this upcoming hunting season Paul.

Magnum rounds have some issues at closer range because they are moving so fast that they dump less energy inside certain ranges such as less than 25 yards. But at 400 yards the 270 WSM is better than a 7mm-08. So depends on where you hunt and the ranges you have to shoot. Love the 7mm-08 though, great cartridge.

I'd love to buy a 270WSM rifle right now, but, that ammo........ the prices........good lord........ What the heck ? When you can find it, it can be anywhere from $3.00 to $6.00 a cartridge. And that does not include Shipping. RIP 270WSM. (Yeah, my local gun shops laugh when I ask about that caliber availability).

🤠 It is just too bad that Winchester got "greedy" to begin with! 😬 It was a "dishonest" business move and I hope that Winchester has learned their lesson, so they don't meet the same fate as Remington did (by trying to make a few extra dollars, by being dishonest - as Remington did with the redesign of the firing mechanism of their rifles to save $5/gun, that ended up killing people and their company)? 😱 The 270 wsm, as far as I am concerned, is one of the "All Time Great Cartridges" and I will be sad to see it go away! 😭 However, their is Absolutely Nothing To Complain About with the Performance of the 270 Winchester and I still prefer it's design to the short/fat cases for feeding and hunting! 🤑 Winchester needs to stay focused on that "Flagship Cartridge" and they will always continue to make money from that Great 270 Winchester Design! 😎

You can read what happened in the "Jamison v. Olin Corporation-Winchester Division" court decision. The cartridges were initially called the "JDW" (Jamison, Ruger, Winchester) family. Jamison had developed and applied for a patent the cartridges and had been dealing with the legal teams of Ruger and Winchester for royalties. Ruger had already signed the the agreement, but after several years of development with Jamison, Winchester decided to reneg on their previous agreement. Winchester did not dispute the facts, they just thought they could get away with it.

They say that the .270WSM is "only" 200-250fps faster than a .270 Win. Well, from what I have seen, most AI calibers are only a couple hundred feet per second faster than the original caliber. So this is basically the same difference as a .270 AI. Right?

For whatever reason, the whole 270 bore has never appealed to me. And yes, i have read some vintage Jack O'Connor, Warren Page, et al. Maybe in ny formative years i subconsciously latched on to 30-06. I don't need those power levels anyway. I am sure it is a technically well done cartridge, but I don't "need" it. Interesting patent story. I expect the royalties would be on the ammo more than the guns. Did he patent the chamber drawing too? I don't think manufacturers pay each other royalties for their chamberings. May evthey have a gentleman's agreement? Or they do pay and nobody talks about it. Several years ago i reimagined the 280 British intermediate cartridge in a shorter case with modern powders. I out up a couple of posts with the idea on Forgotten Weapons and places. Maybe i better go patent it. Lol. Nah, too much work. I would have to have full technical drawings and whatnot. And we have too many 7mm cartridges already. It was a fun mental exercise though

The 6.8 western is a good cartridge holds less powder than the 270 WSM. the barrel twist of the 6.8 is a faster twist and will stabilize a heaver bullet. that said if you install the same twist rate barrel on a 270 WSM it will have a slight advantage.

The problem with all the .270 cartridges is lack of popularity,...even if you reload bullet selection is far lower then any other calibers. So manufacturers won't be making as many, basic supply and demand, with the 6.8 western that is the only cartridge that can take advantage of the heavy for caliber high bc bullet. The reason all the .270 magnums kept the same twist rate was to use the same bullets of the most popular round the .270 winchester

Good luck finding any loaded WSM ammo of any caliber and finding brass is the same problem with only Burtram brass is the only company now offering 300 WSM & 325 WSM for 100 cases @ $200. If anyone knows any company selling any of the WSM brass, I would like to know. I build to sell AR 10 uppers in all WSM cartridges and in wildcats like 6.5 WSM / 358 WSM / 375 WSM but finding the WSM brass has been near impossible and put a stop to the sales of my WSM AR 10 uppers.
