This wasn't a bomber, it was an attack aircraft. The US Navy would need a 2nd generation stealth attack aircraft/bomber for this. Other countries are developing stealth detecting radar so the US Navy needs stealth technology that won't be detected by stealth detecting radar. The A-12 at this point is outdated. They need to start from scratch.

The crinkle cut trailing edge is a thing you'll see a lot on edges like engine nozzles and access panel edges because they have no choice but planform alignment works much better when the edges are long compared to the wavelength. If Northrop was designing it they would have probably ended up with a solution very similar to the B-21.

I wonder if conformal fuel tanks could be shaped so they blend with the body, and change the shape in just the right way to make the body produce more lift. Basically a conformal fuel tank that adds some extra airfoil, which may help with the extra weight. It could have RAM coatings and no right angles, possibly reducing the stealth signature compared to drop tanks. IDK, I know stealth and aerodynamics are often counterintuitive and require testing to find out, but the concept to me seems worth a cursory look

I think if the A-12 was successful, i don't think the F-14 ST-21 would have happened either way. I think we would have had a FA-XX (NGAD) sooner or a YF-23/F-22 for the navy. @jordanmascarenhas7974
@jordanmascarenhas7974 8 ай бұрын
Yes, but at least under McNamara, that cheapness and 1-size-fits-all logic worked with the F-4 Phanthom II and he was also responsible for the Navy seeing the writing on the wall about the Naval variant of the F-111 (F-111B) not being suitable for deck operations, and green-lit the F-14 program, which went through the design phase rapidly and into production within just a couple years. Dick Cheney on the other hand, was completely worthless. Killed off the F-14 instead of upgrading or ordering the F-14E Super Tomcat 21, with its reduced maintenance requirements, longer air frame hours, AESA radar, super cruise capability, extended internal fuel capacity and ordnance carrying capacity that is severely lacking now that we have WW3 with China on the horizon. His greatest claim to fame was that he presided over genius US General Norman Schwarzkopf in his shellacking of the 4th biggest military in the world in 1990.

@@jordanmascarenhas7974 I concede the point on McNamara, even though I still am enraged about him killing the Valkyrie bomber and the XF-108 as well. Cheney's reasoning on the Tomcat being old technology, I call BS on that because plenty of "old aircraft" are still very capable in their roles (the Turks upgrading the Phantoms is one strong example). And Cheney was incredibly shortsighted, as even the USSR didn't exist anymore, it wouldn't be long before another rival took its place. Being behind the curve is deadly, and that's where those like Cheney put us

Imo Northrop winning the contract was unlikely. An unarticulated but high priority of the Pentagon is maintaining a competitive industrial base , which means having multiple high-end-capable aerospace manufacturers, and Northrop already had the B-2. Fast-forward to today, and Northrop recently DROPPED OUT of the Air Force's NGAD competition because they ALREADY had a contract to build a 6th Generation combat aircraft, the B-21. So unless the Lockheed and Boeing entries were total cr@p there is no way the contract would go to Northrop. (Lockheed will win the NGAD contract, and Boeing will win contracts for support aircraft.) That bit of drudgery aside, this is THE BEST A-12 VIDEO on KZfaq, and yes I have seen them all. Kudos!!

I would love to be on Nebula, but as I understand it, it is invite only. If you could mention me in a comment over there I would really appreciate it! Thank you!

1 Month Later the B-21 Raider takes flight. The A-12 Raider II could make it's return.

And,another McDonnell Douglass/General Dynamics bird. Too bad the Dorito never came to fruition. The real mock-up didn’t look like the video and was smaller in size.

This blurred the line between attack aircraft and bombers. I wonder if the US Navy didn't want to have a bomber too. Still, this was an aircraft that was of limited capability compared to the F-18.....at least in some aspects. The F-18 does what the A-6 did and more. That's what killed this project. It's worth mentioning that this would have required a LOT of advanced tech at the time. The chances of success weren't that high. Today the F-35 is getting prepared to take over. With the F-35, anything like this is over.....unless it's a drone. Maybe a loitering munition might be developed. One of the pretty big issues is that other countries are developing stealth detecting radars. Its utility today might be reduced.

The NGAD borrows heavily from both The YF-23 and the A-12. Northrop Grumman builds better airplanes. Unfortunately Boeing has better lobbyists.

Imagine,if it weren't for NORTHRUP GRUMMAN, there would be no FLYING WING AIRCRAFT but then again look at the German's during WW2 towards the end of the war,they came out with a FLYING WING AIRCRAFT !
Why the NGAD is more like the F-111 than you think
