We've wanted to make a video on the Vietnam War for some time, but couldn't figure out what it should be about, then we thought "I wonder what would happen if the British had to send in some kind of Expeditionary Force to help defend and evacuate the French? That's something that's never happened before!", and so, this video was born.

FYI, the British did fight in Vietnam during the period...starting involvement as part of the Malayan Emergency. Some soldiers did fight alongside the Americans in patrol duty, but not many. Also, the SAS was involved in raising anti-communist forces prior to American involvement.

British and Japanese troops fought together after ww2 to route out what later became the VC . Due to political bullshit the French took over, and we all know how that ended up

NZ Soldiers, Vietnam, where given M-60 Chain ammo while they used the L1A1 Rifle, it was so they could supply the American machine gunners if they run out. though British wouldn't care about American machineguns that much having their own.

@@greybeaver8300He is entirely correct in that Thetford training area was used to portray the flat country side outside Hue. It was also handy that the AAC operated Wessex helicopters on the area that could double for USMC Sikorskys. I've flown over Thetford nap of the earth with the doors open in a Wessex and and it looks just as it does in the film.

It's not entirely a joke: my grandfather, who served as a wireless operator in the South Wales Borderers in Malaya during the Uprising, told me that if they needed to send a coded message quickly they used to get one of the Welsh speakers to send it so the Malay rebels couldn't understand (unless they'd all learnt their skills from the Free Wales Army, I suppose!)

I read an interesting book called " her majesty's vietnam soldier " by Guy Bransby. About a brit who joined the green berets so he could fight in vietnam. It was a damn good read.

I served in the REME with his son, he also came to Germany and was a civilian watchman on the main gate of Hobart Barracks in Detmold. If johnny terrorist ever tried attacking the base when Jimmy Riddle was on watch I wouldn't fancy their chances

The British intervened in the Indochina War in 1945 and led a combined force of Japanese, British and British Indian forces to successfully drive the Viet Minh out of Saigon. So in their defense they did their part already.

@@antonisauren8998 Yes, Japanese soldiers who had already been garrisoned in Vietnam at that time who had surrendered to the British were instead transferred to British command until they could get the Viet Minh situation under control. On October 25, 1945, a bizarre incident occurred in which a Japanese patrol captured a Soviet advisor to the Viet Minh, who the British handed over to the French.

@@c.andrew3944 Pedos target little children. Not defending Andrew but at 17, she was legal in some of the locations at the time of the allegations. The first was in London, legal age 16. The 2nd Manhattan, legal age 17. The third was in the US virgin Islands, legal age 18. We had our own “british vietnam”; the Malayan Emergency. And also the Anzacs fought in vietnam, but i’ve never actually found out why, not to mention the South Koreans fought in vietnam too.

Australia got a bit caught up in the "Reds under the Bed" thing, federal police spying on suspected communists, all of that stuff, especially in the late 50s and early 60s. Not as bad as America, but all the same, our government bought into the communist threat wholesale, so we sent Aussie infantry and NZ artillery both to "impress the Yanks" and to try to prevent "The Domino Effect." The public response was not positive. There are some excellent books about it, and the National War Memorial has tonnes of information about our involvement.

We got closer to the US, due to Konfrontasi, Reds under the bed, domino theory and Britain's (no east of Aden) withdrawal from Malaysia and Singapore. Also Britain joining the EU thus screwing Australian produce as a (not to be traded with status) from then on!............ (and we sent defence forces in two world wars to defend Britain!) Australia created new trading partners in Asia and found it very profitable.

The Australian SAS and New Zealand SAS did fight in Vietnam and the RAF flew some combat missions from a base in Thailand to north Vietnam so technically both Britain and the SAS did fight in Vietnam

No RAF combat missions came from Thailand, it was the RAAF that were based in Thailand but many British were in Australian and New Zealand defence forces that have emigrated.

Full Metal jacket was a British film. The training camp was Otterburn. The extras doing the assault course were British Army recruits getting paid a daily extras fee. The battle scenes were filmed in the derelict parts of London Docklands

The training camp was Basingbourne Barracks near Royston. The film set assault course was still standing but a health and safety nightmare when I arrived in1988.

I'm loving the period correct weapons and the Westland Scout. Ironically, I used and worked on all them (including the Helicopter) when I was serving in the early 90s. However. The Bren had been converted to 7.62mm by the late 60s and was then called the L4LMG and had been fitted with a slotted flash eliminator instead of the earlier conical version

We had our lads doing national service in the Malayan Emergency, and they had had quite enough of shooting at the jungle and the jungle shooting back and rarely, if ever, seeing the enemy you're supposed to be shooting at. I worked with a couple of veterans in the 90's who told me all about that nightmare.

And it actually happened in late 45. They were the only ones close enough to occupy south Vietnam until the French could rebuild their army (China occupied the north) and the Brits, using surrendered Japanese troops they promised to send back to Japan if they helped fought the Vietminh and drove them from saigon

@@johnnotrealname8168 British troops deployed in Northern Ireland in August 1969. They were already stationed there, contrary to what some people think. America pulled combat troops out of Vietnam in 1973, and withdrew completely in 1975.

I read a book titled "A British GI in Vietnam." Very interesting how he fooled the US government into letting him be in combat. Worth a read if it is still available.

We didn’t officially fight in the Vietnam war but we did send advisers for jungle warfare, I know this because my grandfather was one of them and there was a British leftenant who changed his nationality to fight because Britain had run out of wars to fight, he was in la drang valley with halmore

People didnt like getting 17 and 18 year old kids killed fighting in a totally unnecessary war that they ended up losing in the end. I'm a former US Marine infantryman (1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division 83 - 87) and found this extremely hilarious. Are you sure your Lieutenant wasn't taken out by friendly fire, as he was a little too _snooty._ All of that political correctness is exactly what an officer would do. Keep up the good work, gents!
